Cool little novelty, but if I'm going with a smaller rod and not a 2-piece or 4-piece type, I'll probably stick with my Dock Demon. Little bastard's caught me lots of crappie.
first thing i would have done is pulled the line out until it stopped and then tied fresh 12lb braid onto it. i never trust line that comes on any rod/reel.
In the 70s I was fishing on a pier in Florida. A kid came out with one of these, which is a zebco reel inside the little rod set up. He caught a a 15ld snook with a frozen shrimp. With about of a dozen guys fishing with high bollar gear and live bait catching nothing. It was hilarious.
My parents have a story similar to this when they went fishing with my uncle, who is a advanced fisherman. they caught multiple fish with the pocket reels, while he had nice gear and caught nothing
We have two of these. I purchased them 12 years ago to take with us on the motorcycle and hiking. We used them at the lake just last month. They have well served their purpose for what we needed.
Can make your own with stuff like old chalk line reels and the like, let alone carving up some wood. Rods are handy for distance casting to reach deeper spots easier. Just like a boat can make it easier. However, one doesn't NEED all this to fish, just makes things more convenient. One just needs a net (where gill nets are allowed), or a line with a hook and some bait. Just keep in mind when hand-fishing, the line can burn or cut.
The first fishing combo that I ever owned, first fishing combo that I ever caught a fish on. My great grandma (R.I.P 🙌) bought it for me. My Uncle Tony took me fishing at the local pier and I caught a Striped Bass. I have been a Fishing Addict ever since. 🐟
I still own one of the original ones, that functions at about 80%. Hope to rebuild it over the winter. Biggest fish I caught on it was a 14 inch striped bass fishing from shore near the Bay of Fundy. I think it would be good for ice fishing as well.
What fun. I grew up in the late 60s & 70s. My parents worked 24/7 and I was never taken on a fishing, hiking, camping, hunting etc trip. But I bought one of these with my own money at a garage sale as a kid and would ride my bike to a city lake used for containing urban run off. It was full of sunfish and bullheads. That thing was my introduction to angling. It was the perfect rig for a kid who really didn't have anyone to teach him angling and only had a bicycle and a can of corn. Folks, spend some time with your kids.

That would be fun to fish the Oregon jetties, fishing in-between the rocks. There is allot of fish in them and it's hard to get into with a normal fishing rod. I've seen people pull rock bass, greenling and eel out of the holes
We have one of the originals somewhere from my dad’s childhood. It actually makes a pretty good ice fishing rod, and I have caught lots of bluegill and rock bass with it as a child.
Hey man, I randomly saw this video in my feed and just wanted to say that I really enjoy your positivity and excitement. I honestly wasn't expecting to watch the whole 26 minutes but I'm glad I did, really fun little bit of escapism to a different place and it was fun seeing all the different fish you were able to catch with that little pocket rod. Saw a Chinese guy using a pop can with line wrapped around the can and he could toss a small spoon a good distance, then wrap the line back on the can while 'reeling' it in similar to a spinning reel .
I caught a 4 lb channel cat on a modern Mr. Fisherman. I thought it would feel like an ultra light rod, but it just felt like I was using only a reel. I was also using 2 real rods. I would never only use it alone. Never used it again.
