Hi. I´m 58 years old guy from Finland. I started to make silver rings and leather cuffs etc... as hobby couple years ago. Now i promised to my friend and co-worker to make him a new knife sheath. And i´m glad i saw your tutorial. Thank you very much for sharing this tutorial.
"Let's just put a little bevel right there...nice...no mistakes, just happy litte sheaths!" Awesome vid thanks! Finishimg my first wet form sheath after watching your vids.
I edited 1 video and realized it was almost an hour long! That's when I decided to break it up and try something new! I don't even think it takes me that long to make the sheath!
You don´t only tell how to do it you- you tell WHY to do it this way.. and this is why we Rookies can avoid a lot of mistakes... there is ONE goal for most of us - but there are many ways to get there... thanks for showing us the ways Airin !!
You really have some of the most complete tutorials I've found on the tube. As a new knife maker I find myself referring to your videos more and more often. Thanks for sharing!!! C.
I'll be back to re-watch this several times! I'm a metal guy, I'm a woodworker, (gunsmith, machinist, luthier, Turner,) I've never done leather. This is a great resource! Thanks for making this!
A double bonanza of videos from one of my favourite TH-camrs today! These videos are always so informative. Airin has one of the best knife-making channels out there! 🇬🇧🙏🏻🇺🇸
Fantastic videos. I lost my sheath to a fire, was able to salvage and bring back the knife. I followed your super clear steps and my new sheath came out amazing. Thanks for the education!
Clean up the sheath edges with the 2X72 and didn't tell me grit size teacher????? Lots of your skills are very good. Seems excellent instruction Sir. . I'm listening to you harder each lesson. . Thanks for showing me your work Sir
Super helpful videos, I followed other vids for sheath making and totally messed up lol This was really simple and easy to follow for someone who has never worked with leather before. Thanks a bunch!!
Thanks for sharing your knowledge/talent. You are a great teacher, so easy to listen to and follow along with. My 13 year old son has an interest in making knives, wooden handles, and different types of sheaths. He would eventually like to sell them. His dad helps him with the metal working, I do woodworking and sewing/knitting as my hobbies so I am trying to help him with the handles and sheaths and your tutorials have been/will be a lot of help to all of us. Since all 3 of us are definite beginners and learning as we go we can use all the help we can find! If anyone has any other tips, tricks or even other creators channels that might also help please let us know! Thank you again for sharing your time and knowledge! 😊
That is awesome! I am releasing a video at 9 this morning that aims at the beginner with little tools! Hope it helps! Cheers! Feel free to ask questions
Well done and simple is better for the beginners or the expert's, the knife is what we want to protect, and a home for it to live, great line Man, Thanks for that. 😊
Very nice video. Here’s a hint I found a while back that works very well. Instead of drilling my holes, I put a finishing nail in my drill press with a sharpened edge. That makes nice holes without removing any material so that they close up on the stitches. The best of both worlds
I should have said a sharpened point instead of edge. Finishing nails are not actually perfectly pointed. I just smoothed the point out on my 2 x 72 grinder
I love this! Good luck with the sheath. I am glad you working your way through the first one! I wish I could tell you they get easier but really each project teaches us something new! I guess that why it still interests me
@@Aleeknives I’m always ready to expand my knowledge on it! Very awesome way to spend down time and very rewarding to look back at something and say, I made that. Thank you for all your videos!
Thanks much for this video! I was able to make a fairly nice sheath from your instruction. One thing I would add is that I had to eventually take the project outside for using the Weldon contact cement! I thought my garage with the door opened a bit would work, but that stuff is strong! Thanks for your thorough teaching!!!
So I just followed these directions using car leather scraps lol I’ve never made anything with leather but had to try. It was still fun making even with thin leather. Thanks for the video I’m a beginner so I have a lot to learn.
Learning more here... re the welt, blade portion vs guard portion. Makes sense! The minor details like cutting the 'ramp' at the angle so the knife can be easily placed is gold... those type of tips is what I enjoy about your vids. Wet forming the belt loop after applying dye is something I'd never have thought of. Great stuff, as always!
Sometimes when I am filming and editing I wonder what parts of the videos will be helpful to others and what parts are redundant with other makers videos. I really try to verbalize each step in the process on these tutorials. Now if I can just get better with the camera and the editing software! Thanks for watching R Roberts!
@@Aleeknives You'd be amazed at the amount of little hints that I catch on your vids.... yes, others make vids as well, but I wouldnt worry about redundancy. What I like about your vids is you explain not only the larger picture but the nuances of the steps and for me, when both perspectives are explained it gives an idea behind the thought process on the artistry of the piece.
I just got into knife making and I made a blade with a deer horn handle. Been looking around how to make a one piece sheath that’ll fit it. I’m glad I found your video!! Great video and a big thanks!!
I put a strip of leather between the belt loop and the sheath in the place of the stitches, so that there is a better gap for the belt and at the same time it is stronger in the place of the stitches.
Probably one of the simplest sheaths and methods I've seen. I love it because I've tried to make a sheath twice and i threw them away because I messed em all up. I love how sleek yours came out. I'll be saving this and watching again and giving it another go
@@Aleeknives you should see the pitiful little 8" crescent wrench knife i forged and the Miller Lite box and duct tape sheath it resides in lol I'm thinking kydex(idk how to spell that?) for that one. Idk....it doesn't look like it deserves leather lol but not bad for a 1st attempt. It's shaving sharp tho
Excellent video and you are an outstanding teacher! Very inspirational! Made sheets for my knives following you step by step and they turned out really well! Keep up your great work and thanks again!
The only thing I can add is I always leave a drain hole at the tip of the sheath. Same for Kydex. Also I groove out the inside for the belt loop so the stitches won’t get cut from the blade. Im left handed but every sheath is cross draw. That way my firearm is on the left side. And when I carry a shotgun/rifle it doesn’t wack my knife.
great tutorial! there is one thing i dont get though. after running the groover for where to put the stitches. How do you aim to make the drill hit the grooverline on the other side? my holes often end up 1-2mm wrong on the backside and it looks awful. i use a handdrill btw
Maybe wear a glove on left hand when edge beveling. Especially if your beveled isn’t stupid sharp [Dull things be dangerous]. I’ve opened myself up doing a “just real quick” change to something. Love your content, stay safe so you can keep making it!
great video thankyou... i would have liked to know what number beveller you used , what size drill hole for stitching , could we use anything within reason to burnish ? kind regards ian.
Interesting video. Comments are ; Beveling needs to be done before stitching. Belt loop needs to be sewn on before the body of the sheath. A weep hole needs to be utilized at the point before a complete stitch is done. Otherwise, a very good video.
Hi Again. Thank you for your videos, they have inspired me to make the sheaths for the knives I make. I am part way through my first sheath, following your guidance. I do have a question. When you draw round the blade, on the sheath itself then make a mark half an inch wider, for the stitching and glueing; is there a reason why you don’t use the offcut for your welt. At this stage it seems to make sense to use the offcut as it (I believe) should have the same profile as the blade? No criticism, just trying to learn
Wow, That really turned out nice. you are an artist my friend. Thanks for the tips. I am going to start getting into leatherwork soon and will use your advice for sure. I noticed in the background of either the first video or second you had a wicked edge sharpener. How do you like it? I use Japanese wet stones and have excellent results that are hair popping sharp. I have heard that the wicked edge will do the same but my God are they expensive. Stay safe my friend, I sure love your videos.
Thanks man! I agree the wicked edge is stupid expensive! However, the secondary bevel comes out perfect and precise with the wicked edge. You almost can't screw it up and I sharpen a lot of knives. I made 1 to many mistakes sharpening custom made knives and finally bit the bullet
I have tried but until you get real good at punching your holes what will happen is that your holes will be in the groove on the front but will not all make it into the groove on the back. sometimes your holes wander a little, if the holes don't all land in the groove it looks like a mistake
Where did you get the layout mat you working on ? Might have covered it somewhere else I haven't seen, Or do you have an affiliate link ? Great video and detail Sir.
