How to Make Leather Knife Sheaths

- This project video is one that I should have made a long time ago. One of the best selling items we have ever made in the saddle shop has been our fold over knife sheaths. In this video, I show you how to make these from start to finish.
If you are looking for a project that doesn't use a lot of leather and goes together quickly then this is it. This is also a great way to use up the scrap leather that may be accumulating in the corners of your workshop. Floral tooled, geometric tooled, dyed, painted and even plain leather, these items will become one of your most popular selling items.
I have developed a set of patterns to use when making these that will cut out all the fitting issues for most knives. My pattern uses the tooling window to size the finished sheath to fit a particular knife. This is a digital PDF file that you will download and print the patterns out on your own printer. Along with the cut pattern for the shealth and the three different size tooling windows that I use in my shop, you will also get 6 different floral tooling patterns for each of the three different windows. Been a leather worker for a long time and I see a lot of TH-cam craftsmen tooling leather. Most of them do it incorrectly which makes me cringe. It sure is a pleasure watching you tool leather the way it should be done. Thank you for upholding the integrity of our art.

Most leatherworking vids ,they say if it works for you , its not the wrong way.
@@ItsJustJerFromJersey much like welding or plumbing or electrical work leather working was a trade skill. There are correct techniques for complicated work. Today it's more of a hobby and I agree if it works for a hobbyist then stick with it.
@@MrStudzdog the point is not that it won't work, but that it will make the next stage more difficult, time consuming and awkward!
I know this from bitter self experience!
I was going To take an apprenticeship with my Dad and learn from his experience!
He died when I was 12, so it didn't happen! I still learned, but it took me a hell of a lot more give and frustration!
I learned leatherwork the same way when I used to do quivermaking!
It's not that it is just wrong, but it is wrong for a very good reason!

I don't know how to work leather, but for 3 days, I have sat and watched your videos, I think at the age of 58, I have a new hobby, this video done it for me the sheaths I will start off with, if I can find where I can buy your patterns on line, great videos no messing about straight in to the work, love it.

They look great! For those of us that make our own templates, can you go over how you make a template? Like the distance from your stitch line to edge and how much room you allow? Also how you set your tooling windows.

If you put a piece of MDF under your sacrificial leather when you're punching holes (buckstitch or hand sew) you can keep the sheath on the rock instead of hanging it over the edge. Great video! Learning tons.

Another amazing video. I just got the pattern pack. I was wondering if you could tell me more about the lace so I can find it at SLC. The white is kangaroo, but what is the darker lace used for the whip stitch? Kangaroo comes in 3/32, 1/8, or 1/4. Thank you for all you do ❤️

Why do you use dye over edge paint? Just have it around?
Edge paint has less chance of bleeding (which I have found happens alot when dyeing veg tan edges).
Excellent idea on a measure reference. I used to use that when I handled CAD images converted to print. Each CAD program converted to different sizes so the output always included a line segment with a defined length for final size reference.

Don, thanks for all your efforts to share your knowledge. How do you determine the length of your lace to do a wrap lace...2x the length, 2 1/2, or 3x the length. You have really helped me during my learning curve. When people ask what I make, I will tell them mostly mistakes. I would guess that a slight modification on the strap and a line 20 or 24 snap would work with my suspenders. Thanks in advace for suggestions.

Quick question, on the knife sheath you braided the edge, was that also kangaroo lace?
What kind of buckstitch chisel do you use? Great video.
Welp, I'm not sure what a "buck stitch needle" is, but my main gig is whip making (kangaroo leather, so I make and use a LOTTA lace), and I use Perma Lok needles--the back end is threaded (female), and you just screw it onto the point of your lace good and tight. I've only RARELY had a problem with them coming off, they just don't, and oh my GAWD are they a time saver!

Can I ask, on curved surfaces, should you tool the flat piece then wet mould it, or wet mould to shape then tool. I find that sometimes the tooled pattern gets distorted or looses definition if I wet mould after tooling. Thank you

I have the pattern pack for this build and made a couple of sheaths for a case trapper knife. The sheath has a really tight fit, tight enough my knife is getting stuck in the sheath. My stitch line is about 1/8 of an inch from the tooling window. Is that enough room?
