Just tried it today on my garage mix/master. Used it on separate upright bass, acoustic guitar, and vocal tracks in the mix, and it added a remarkable warmth and clarity to all of them. Upright bass is really tough but it worked wonders on it. Then I placed it in my mastering chain for the same piece, and it both pulled everything together and lifted it at the same time. Very nice. I don't have a lot experience but this one did some very different things than some of the other plugins I've been using. Thanks for your review. I love watching how others dial in sounds. Very informative. I don't buy every plugin that comes along, but I think this is going to be one of them! Cheers!
I wonder how the Amek 250 and the 200 compare to the Acustica Ivory? I'm using the 250 for mastering presently, which is going well it seems - Ivory is on sale so I'm wondering if there's any good reason to try it, when I'm quite happy with the PA product ;-)
I own the Ivory and I do use it sometimes but nowhere near as much as the Ameks. But it’s a personal taste thing. If you can get Ivory for a good price it’s worth having it in your arsenal.
@@TheCratesMotel Got the Ivory bundle for about £50, they say the Metric Halo Sontec is the best Masselec plugin, but it's full price now and not cheap - anyway will compare this with the 2 Ameks as I go along
What's your daw? In ProTools there is a mono version. I'd suspect there is a mono version for every other daw. If you are asking if there's a 'mix' version with a single sided gui (versus the 'master' version) like the Elysia eq that Plugin Alliance has then there is no such thing.
Just load the plugin on a mono track and it automatically detects and loads a mono instance. Well, it does on S1, Ableton and Sequoia anyway. Thanks for watching.
I enjoy your down-to-earth approach with this sort of thing. I've bought a lot of EQs, compresssors and limiters from PA over the years. I've used the 200 quite a lot on my self-masters (I don't consider myself a mastering pro, but I do attempt a master on my own material as I suspect a lot of home producers do). I used to use the Digital V3 a lot, as well as the Amek 200. Well, I caved and bought this one, too. I can't always tell with certainty between the 200 and 250 to be completely honest, but the 250 sounds a bit more harmonically rich to my ears. There's a very interesting backstory involving the real-world counterparts to the 200 and 250 plugins btw, involving 2 different engineers who began as partners.. Anyway, I'm rambling. Love the multiple examples you provided here. Well done
Thanks for your words dude and thank you for watching. I think I’ll always use both the 200 and the 250. Neither replaces the other. I guess we are all lucky we can have these kind of emulations in the box. I still use the V3 a lot in mastering. Great EQ.
Bought this plugin on the strength of two words from this review ... "Posh" and "Neve". And indeed, it is quite definitely "Posh" sounding and a little bit "Nevey" ... esque, maybe ish. After a day of fooling with it, it has elbowed its way into my favorites folder and caused me to rebuild a couple of my master templates to accommodate it. I'll be using it a lot. As an aside, I think it may well become a plug that I use a little bit like I will occasionally use an LA-2A, in the chain, not doing much if anything, but definitely there. Nice review. Nicely done Dirk.
Good review. I was 'influenced' 😜 I noted from comments elsewhere that they reckon that the EQ centre frequencies are at bit higher than shown on screen. Not the end of the world but good to know ... unless of course they've fixed it. I've just bought this one so I'll give it a test ... after dinner 🍽
@@TheCratesMotel Yeah ! I had to decide how to use my last Halloween Code. I chose the TOMO Lisa ... also very nice. Then, the next day, I got one of PA's Loyalty Vouchers and the EQ250 came in at £16 ... !!! Yay !! Result ! 👍
Just demoed it after seeing your video. At first, 250 sounds as if it has far more harmonics than 200. Plugin doctor shows identical THD 250 vs 200. Not sure what colours the sound so drastically - it's really thick and not at all transparent. The 250 output is hotter than 200 at same settings... Certainly interesting. Thanks for the vid, all the best!
How do you compare it to the amek 200 is the question. Also I use studio one as well but how do you find it cpu intensive? And also the female vocal without the eq also sounds very pleasant, what mic did you happen to use?
Hey thanks for watching. If you watch until the end I discuss the comparisons with the Amek 200. They are completely different beasts. It is not as CPU intensive as the 200. Regarding the vocal, in YT videos it is better to use royalty free music, so the vocal is actually from a sample pack, so I have to confess to having no idea at all what mic was used. But it had a lot of rumble on the low end haha
@@TheCratesMotel Oh ok thanks alot. So in other words by saying transparent vs organic meaning this one is slightly more 3D sounding, because I feel the 200 is quite of a transformative sound in terms of poppy and beefy but it would be nice to see a video for a comparison. Thank you once again great video
@@lucasturney4269 I will keep an eye on it, but for now it is lighter. With all the differences in people's set ups, DAWs, etc, I guess there could always be a difference. Thanks for watching.
To me, the 200 sounds much smoother on the high end than the 250. But they both sound great on Chill music. Now I wish I could get a verses on the 200 and the TOMO Lisa while the sale is on. Lol
The difference between the 200 and 250 is a bit overstated. Aside from some interesting curves the difference is negligible. It's a great eq but nothing wholly different.
That’s cool. Thank you for your opinion. I have used the 200 every day for over a year and I disagree. But that’s the wonders of personal opinion. Thanks for watching.
In my opinion yes. The V3 is excellent for clean surgical work but I feel the 200 imprints some character. It has a vibe. Both great EQs. Thanks for watching.
Love your videos and PA stuff! Nevertheless, there have been a few accusations of 'snake oil' from respected reviewers, which worries me slightly. Some of the results using plugin Doctor have show some weird anomalies (sub-bass boost, inaccurate calibration). I prefer the visuals as they're easier to see, lol. But, kinda on the fence as to whether I need it enough.
Hey buddy, thanks for watching. There will always be haters I guess and that is good. You need a fair representation of people's opinions. But that is all we do. Give our opinions. I have seen a few videos saying it's not like the hardware. I am always very dubious of people making comparisons to hardware they do not have to compare against. The main reason why I do not use Plugin Doctor is because I am more interested in how it sounds. That's the important thing to me. I am sure a lot of the plugins I use have very strange results in Plugin Doctor, but I use them because I like how they sound. For instance, try running Waves L2 through Plugin Doctor lol. I didn't have Plugin Doctor in the 80s when I started haha and I am definitely sure some of my gear would have thrown up all sorts of weird results in Plugin Doctor type analysis tools. Do you need the plugin? Only you can decide that. Maybe wait until the price goes down. In conclusion, and this is just my opinion: I feel people get hung up a lot on the technical side of plugins and gear when they should really just go ahead and use it in the field, try it out in actual situations. I honestly cannot remember the last time an end consumer said to me "Those harmonics are incorrect. There's too much aliasing. That's not a real 1176" lol. Anyway, thanks again for watching dude.
EQ 200 sounds better. This one is not worth it if you have 200 already. If not. Get 200 instead. Thank you. PS. Many people from their FB page says the same.
Hey, thank you for watching and thanks for your opinion. Obviously it is subjective. Better in your eyes may not be better in somebody elses eyes. I don't really like to judge plugins as better or worse. I think of them in terms of what should I use for a particular situation. I would never reach for any plugin by default. I make an assessment and then choose my tools. I use both of these daily on masters for clients and I don't personally think either is better than the other. I use them both in different situations, depending on the source. I find the 200 does not handle low end as well as the 250. It can break up at around 56hz, and not in a nice way, however I prefer the 5k area on the 200. The advantage we have is we can own both, at a very good price, and use multiple instances. Cheers.
