    Just wanted to send a note to compliment you on your posts. I came across you when I began using Kon Mari in my house. The reason I like your videos is that you get right to the point, you share ideas simply and quickly, no rambling on and on like some others I have checked out and you also supply a lot of great information in a short time! It is refreshing to see how you apply everything in your own daily life. Thank you for taking the time to share!

    Thank you for including dairy and corn products as no no's. Dairy is so bad for most people and they don't realize it. Besides stomach problems it causes a lot of inflammatory side effects such as sinus and throat problems, if I have any dairy I immediately get sinus congestion and a cough or sore throat. Thank you for the weekly videos, they have been very helpful :-)

    Hi. So I was introduced to minimalism by a friend, and have started watching your videos. Every year, after Christmas, I deep clean everything I have. This year I was able to let go of so much clutter. I'm not fully 'there', but I do feel like I was able to take a huge step this year. Can't wait to try some of these tips, too

    Very helpful video, thank you Melody. :) As someone who has previously lost around 65 kg (not sure in pounds, probably like 130) I can say that your advice is very sound. I still take milk in smaller amounts but the weight loss group I joined years ago basically give you similar tips: Return to the basics and base your diet on lean meats and veg / fruit, with some carbs like plain rice and pasta. They cut out condiments and a lot of processed foods so it is very clean. Keep up the great work and thank you for all your helpful tips on minimalism. On a funny note, I even rejected a Christmas present this time as it would have been another 'dust catcher' on the mantlepiece .. and I really didn't like the look of it, so go Minimalism! I am also donating a lot of things I haven't used in a while, so I am finding your advice and tips very useful. :) Greetings from Ireland! :D

    I am confused as to why you would consider prescription medications in the things you should stop eating in order to lose weight...if you have been prescribed medications it's highly likely that you NEED those drugs. I understand for things like birth control which is voluntary but things like seizure medications can't simply be stopped in order to lose weight...maybe it's just your wording but idk if I agree with this point.

      Emily King I thought the same thing, I have to do weekly injections to control my rheumatoid arthritis from destroying my joints, can't just stop doing that

    • @MoreMelody
      @MoreMelody  7 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      Hey Emily, sorry I didn't clarify. I was referring mainly to psychiatric medications. About 25% of American women now take psychiatric medication, and this began to rise about the time that obesity did in the United States. I'm not saying it causes obesity, as no category alone causes obesity, but it can slow your metabolism and also diminish energy and motivation, in the same way that birth control did for me. Exercising and making decisions becomes more difficult as energy declines over time.
      Everybody's body is different (for instance, my body can't handle a lot of citrus), but this is just a video of what I believe to play a big role in weight and are categories that are great to focus on when keeping a food dairy. Tracking how items within these categories make us look and feel over two weeks can really change your life.

    • @emilyking9129
      @emilyking9129 7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      More Melody Still some of those medications are probably necessary for people. Wouldn't it have been better to say "any unnessesary medications". And not all drugs have the side effects you mentioned. People just need to be educated when it comes to the effects of drugs the don't need.

    My mother and both grandmothers were minimalist cooks. It wasn't until I became older that I really appreciated that. They had salt, pepper, chili powder, cumin and cinnamon in their spice cabinet. People will tell you they don't cook or eat out, but when you go to their homes, they may have 25-30 jars of spices in their cabinets. Of course, dried herbs and spices have a 1 year life span, which means many of those herbs/spices should be thrown out.

    You're so right about dairy, a lot of other things too but the dairy really hits home. It's scary to think of how the US food guidelines are based on what is economically beneficial. Meat, dairy, etc. No one is lobbying for lettuce and it shows.

    Hi Melody! Concerning the comments on psychiatric medications, I too, have to take them, and I have been on them since I was 30 years old and I just turned 65. They have side effects just like most medications, but the worst has been weight gain. I think all of them cause this. I am Type II Diabetic (also I suspect from weight gain) and the insulin they put me on caused me to gain 30 pounds right off the bat. My doctor told me it would. It's a Catch-22 situation. My doctor is slowing weaning me off the psych meds & I am dieting to lose weight too. Hopefully with a major, major weight loss(100 lbs.) I can come off insulin. It would be wonderful to not have to take any meds.

    Some medications are harder to stop such as medications for asthma/heart/diabetic/seizure but I think the part where we need to minimize what we eat and keep it simple so that we can our energy for other things too. I agree with drink plenty of water to maintain body weight (and good skin). I guess eating more vegetables and 1 fruit a day are definitely working.

    I think going vegan has really simplified my eating while saving me money AND making me more healthy. I just keep simple plant based foods in the house that are easy to cook, like beans, rice, and veggies, and usually for fruits I keep oranges and bananas. I always eat breakfast because I have hypoglycemia, but I keep it simple like oatmeal. I rarely ever eat out of the house which is also a money saver. I take food with me if I think I'll need it. When you eat plant based, with no oil and minimal fat, weight loss happens naturally.

    Great video! I am planning to eat healthier this year. I focus on buying whole foods at the grocery store, and then either eat them raw or use them in a recipe. If you avoid anything with chemicals, hormones, or antibiotics, your health will improve tremendously. I've done quite a bit of research and experimenting over the past few years and have found that my health is most directly linked to what I eat.

    Hi Melody, I've been trying to buy one of those humidifiers you have recommended, although I live in the UK and cannot get one anywhere! I've tried to purchase 3 times from Amazon now but it rejected it because I don't think it ships to U.K. :( I've looked at so many others and none seem half as good. Do you know any way I can get one please? Or a place I can buy it from here? I have a chronic sore throats (it's been sore every day for the past year and a half since I got mono! :( ) and I've literally tried EVERYTHING - every medicine, remedy and test - nothing works.. so was hoping this might as a last resort! Anyway.. enough moaning, sorry.. I just put all my hopes into being able to get this one after your good recommendation (and the products great reviews), but having no luck. Please let me know where I can get one or where you got yours! Thanks, kat x

    It is quite simple to stay thin. Focus on eating fruit and vegetables for meals. Easy-to-make foods such as chunky salads. =) Organic scrambled eggs or hard boiled, can't go wrong with bananas!
    Drink (no added sugar) juice smoothies. Apples are a quick, delicious snack. :)
    Organic hot tea for a beverage, and not much else. Tap water in America has highly toxic chemicals such as fluoride so best stay away from drinking it. Bottled water often isn't any better unfortunately. :(
    Also try your best to be sure all food items are organic and non gmo (especially corn- causes tumors if it has gmo's). Please check each food item and snacks, most nowadays are toxic as they have been genetically modified (sprayed with weed killers). Thank you.

    Hi Melody, what do you think of organic dairy? Organic milk/yogurt. Also, since you stopped hormonal birth control, what are you using now? I recently got the Mirena IUD and gained 5 lbs in the first month. 😞

    • @MoreMelody
      @MoreMelody  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Sally, I would use latex-free condoms.
      Organic dairy is better because the well-being is better than factory for the cow and also there are no antibiotics for you. Even if the footprint is larger to care for a cow in a humane way, it is still better than trusting big companies with cows in my opinion.
      My mom is 50% Asian, so I inherited the common Asian intolerance for dairy. Going forward, I would pay attention to if consuming a lot (like a milkshake or a glass of milk) at once makes a difference in things like digestion, migraines, or acne. If you notice that it does make a difference in large quantities, then it probably is having a significant difference in smaller quantities over time too. So then I would try cutting it out completely or greatly minimizing it for two weeks and tracking closely in a food diary any results before adding it back in. I also track during that time things like digestion, mood, energy, weight gain/loss. For me, aside from feeling better, a big benefit of cutting back on dairy was the cost savings. Organic dairy is so expensive. So more money, quicker shopping trips, and now meals are even easier to prepare.

    • @MoreMelody
      @MoreMelody  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Natasha, vegetables and fruit, and there's so many ways to consume: as a snack, smoothie bowls, juicing, salads, snack platter, cooked as a side at meals, used creatively in place of pasta/potatoes. Nuts, beans, seeds, nut and bean butters. For those who consume meat, chicken and fish are a lot lighter (less nitrates and antibiotics) than the other options. Rice is my favorite grain, and I eat it at every dinner. White rice actually makes me feel better than brown rice and is a lot quicker to cook (15 minutes). Asians consume a lot of white rice and vegetables and season it well, and I like it because it's mindful and minimalist eating (one bowl meals).
      You can find what vegetables and fruits go with your body by keeping a food diary (more on that in another video), but also crackers and bread I still eat regularly. Gluten-free anything actually upsets my stomach (food diary); bone broths and citrus cause migraines for me. This is just to say that every body is different, so don't underestimate even "good" foods in a food diary. This video is not a ban list, just more or less what I pay attention to or minimize: I consume sparingly dairy, soy, and drinks outside of water. My one weakness is dessert, but I can't win them all :)

    I've never had a weight loss problem, as I have colitis, and must eat small meals to avoid an attack. nonetheless, I find your rills to be sound. good job.

      Hey Chelsee, it could actually help with weight loss! Unfortunately, I can't drink green tea because caffeine gives me migraines, but I do love the taste

      I live in the South and do love sweet tea (and pretty much any tea), but I try to use Splenda when I'm out. And green tea is lovely with a little honey :-)

    Melody, unfortunately my daughter was diagnosed with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome and one side effect of this is a higher testosterone level which causes to grow thicker and more hair than normal in a woman, the skin is greasy and acne on your back for example is very noted and the most common way to "control this" according to specialists is by taking the lowest dose of birth control pill... have you read anything about a more natural or minimalistic way to approach this condition in order not to have to consume the birth control pills? Thanks!

      Yodi R. Weight loss and lower carb diet works wonders! Try to get her to get active. Losing weight helped so much. Real, Whole, unprocessed carbs.

      She would benefit from taking Soymilk which mimics estrogen to balance out the testosterone. You can also use other products that help produce more estrogen naturally, so that her testosterone lowers.

      MnM H, I had no idea, same with previous post. Spearmint tea is something that would not be difficult to get used to... sugar and sweets will be a challenge, but we should give it a try, yes, we both have the condition, seems to be hereditary. Thank you for your reply!
