- Spitfires intercepting a formation of 20+ He 111s with a strong 40+ escort of Bf 109s including close escort and top cover during the height of the Battle of Britain in1940.

I had no idea this was still being played. CFS1 and 2 were huge, I won a flight stick and had a blast at a couple CFS "Fly Ins". It was before esports, people from around the globe travelled to compete in person.
This is the game that needs a remake. With the power and graphics of computers today these games could be epic

DCS is the modern combat flight simulator. It is indeed epic. You also have War Thunder which is a more expansive, free to play, but more casual (gamey) version.
CFS 1 is where I started. On “the zone”.
Remember when folks were griping about Auto-Rudder and “trim on the slider” lol. Wow. It’s been a minute…or two.

Takes me back to CFS 2, playing with a Sidewinder Force Feedback 2. I would feel the bullets hitting my plane; but also, if another plane exploded next to mine, the sidewinder would jerk the other way. Badass for the year 2003.

Been at it since before CFS1 and still one of my favorites for WW II air combat . Have 11 installs of CFS3 and all the expansions. Love CFS3 and what has been done over the years ,and still being done. Long live CFS3 !

That was…awesome. Great flying BTW. Excellent skills. MSCFS 3 looks incredible modded like this. I’ve been flying IL-2 Great Battles since 2014 but it just doesn’t feel as good as this. Theres something missing from IL-2 I can’t put my finger on. The clouds, sound, and textures are great. I particularly like the sound of the .303 machine guns.
Thanks! I know what you mean about Il-2. It *should* feel better, but it doesn't, and I can't say exactly why either. As a pilot by trade, I've focused my mods on trying to capture the small things that I think you aren't normally conscious of, but seem to pull more than their fair share of the weight in creating an experience I find satisfying. So far it's going well, and progress continues. This video is a few years old, and looks a bit dated compared to next round of mods that I'm close to releasing.
@@theflyinghobo4259 Hello. Your caption states that the mods you've linked will get the game close to what we're seeing in the vid, but not quite. Why aren't all the mods available? Mate, I would pay money for it; I'm serious. I'm trying to find the patches to allow the game to run on windows 7, but so far no luck, in fact I don't even know where to begin. I have the game on disc and the V2 update. I haven't installed anything yet. Any help would be appreciated and as I said, I'm prepared to pay.
@@ilguitarothe mods that I can't release currently fall into two categories. 1, some are mods of others' mods which I cannot release on their own. 2. Some are so complex that there is no way to release them without creating a completely new standalone version of the game.
I am presently working to replace the mods I can't release and folding them into a new standalone version of the game that I can release as a single download. I may be biased, but I think the results will be pretty good. Unfortunately it will take a while. I'm just a guy working for fun in my limited spare time.
For your questions about getting CFS3 working in windows 7, I've forgotten the details, but I used to run it successfully on Windows 7 before I had to upgrade to 10. I recommend asking at the CFS3 forum here: sim-outhouse.org/sohforums/forums/cfs3-general-discussion.7/
I go by gecko over there and there are lots of helpful people who I'm sure can get you up and running.

Omg we never had a computer that could play this game with the graphics this good looking.. cfs3 was a big upset to me because of this… froze up all the time too. I used to cry… that was at dad’s house. At moms house cfs2 and IL2 worked great, so that was a plus at least. Really loved IL2
Did you just click things into the cockpit?? How do you do that ?
I'm kinda surprised how well a heavily modded version of CFS3 looks compared to some of the modern titles.
Not to say that no progress has been made in between all those years, but it is surprising nonetheless.
The upgrade from the stock DX8 to DX9 accounts for a great deal of it. Beyond that, quality modeling and texturing can do a surprising amount to close the gap with newer titles. Sure it doesn’t have all the newest bells and whistles, but it does have a lot of the most important ones compared to the stock release.
And at present, this video is somewhat dated compared to some work in progress projects I have going, it keeps getting better. Will it ever be DCS or BoX? No, but it's fun to see how good you can make a 20 year old game look.

The clouds I had downloaded do not appear to be available for download anymore, I don't know why. If I recall correctly, they were by Aris or Aris Fuser, originally as a mod to Wings Over Flanders Fields. You might try some of these: thatoneplease.co/skyWOFF.html

Hi! I don't have a head tracking device but it's there any other way to have the camera move around the cockpit freely using, let's say, the hat switch on my joystick instead of just being limited to the default fixed views?
I believe the scroll lock key will change the hat function from switching between set views, to a panning mode. I haven't used them, but there is free head-tracking software available that will use your web camera to track your head position the same way trackIR does.

Glad you enjoyed it. I own FS9 but have barely flown it. I'm curious about your project, but realistically I'm way too covered up in other projects at the moment to be taking on another right now.
@@theflyinghobo4259 ill be posting a video soon on it. its a complete revamp of FS2004. end goal is DirectX 12 support, 4K textures, shaders, self shadowing, better clouds, better fog, etc. its a good platform. weve got a couple guys working on it and the early results are promising. it's only stage one. texture revamps.

May I ask is this (mcs3) still runnable in 2021 under windows 10 and if so what version the battle for Europe or another. I've recently noticed another title based on mcs3 wings of the reich but seems to be little progress on that for years now. Thanks
I am using my own heavily modded version of Microsoft Combat Flight Simulator 3 in this video. Check the video description and comments here for more details on the mods. I am running it just fine on Windows 10.
Wings Over the Reich is a different title also based on CFS3. It is quite good, and the developers have just announced that they are working on a major update. They had been focused on a major release for their WWI sim and are now turning their attention to WOTR to do the same for it.

Hi. Is CFS3 the best FFB Sim for a Microsoft Sidewinder Force Feedback Joystick? Do you use Opentrack to control the view in this video?
I know that CFS3 supports FFB but I have never played it with an FFB stick, so I’m not able to say how good it is. I am using TrackIR in this video, but I believe CFS3 supports all freeware head tracking software as well. I understand it can even do limited VR, but I don’t have a VR set, so I have never tried it myself.

Is this really CFS3? I remember being disappointed with the graphics back in about 2006, when it looked a lot worse that IL-2, with blocky, fuzzy textures and cripplingly low poly counts. Airfields were rendered as grey smudges on a vaguely mottled green landscape if I remember. The power of mods I guess. I do wish DCS had this kind of focus though, WW2 in DCS is in a kind of limbo, where it doesn't represent either of the really interesting periods of the air war, BoB or the round-the-clock bomber offensive from 1942. This looks pretty fun.
Had this game like 20 years ago. Didn't have a joystick and there was no way to use a mouse. Had to try and fly it just using the keyboard. That was impossible. But this looks nothing like the game from back then. Is it CFS3?
When it was released it was a bad enough game even with a joystick! Lot's has changed with 20 years of a small number of modders improving it little by little, and occasionally by a lot. I've linked some of the most important mods in the description of this video, others are my own work which hasn't yet been released.
I had CFS3 BoB on my computer back in 2006 I don't recall the interior reflections and canopy frame shadows on the inside of the cockpit being anywhere as nice as this. Is this with some Direct 3D enhancement like ReShade?
Stock CFS3 uses DX8 shaders which didn't have those features. About 10 years ago a DX9 shaders mod was created (linked in the description) which added self-shadowing, much better reflections, and many more enhancements. It has been updated several times over the years and a new update is nearing release which will contain significant improvements to the sky, among other things.

This is Combat Flight Simulator 3 - but heavily modded. See the description for link to the most important mods.
I'm shocked that CFS3. For BoB stuff I have to ask: Why not fly CLOD?
Mainly because I can't mod it nearly to the extent that I can CFS3. CLOD is a really pretty sim, and sometimes I do enjoy flying it just for that. But CLOD has had, and still does have issues that I just can't get over, and that always ruins the experience for me. Near the top of that list is a superhuman AI with perfectly timed lightning reflexes that can do multiple full deflection control surface reversals in a fraction of a second. Just watch their ailerons next time you are one one's tail and you'll see what I mean. At the same time, their maneuvers and aggressiveness are really bland. As a single player guy, this is something that really kills enjoyment for me. The other big thing is the aircraft systems modeling. Different systems in the aircraft do not relate as they should and engines are too fragile and prone to overheating. I say this because in spite of the wonderfully complex modeling and equations that try to take everything into account, you still end up with an aircraft that isn't capable of being flown the way flight test data, pilots notes, and combat reports indicate that they were flown. Some people might disagree, no worries, they have CLOD, and it is still a really cool sim.
I'm not one to go whining to devs about stuff, so instead I went and built something where I could enjoy my flights without those issues.

There is quite a lot of modding of mods involved in what you see that can't be released due to copyright issues, as well as quite a few of my own mods that are so intricate as to require a purpose-built install of the sim. I do hope to release such an install publicly, and am currently working on putting it together. But I am doing this in my spare time for free, so it's taking a while to make progress. Meanwhile, I did the next best thing and listed my recommendations for what existing mods to use to get you as close as possible.

Unfortunately the mods are behind a paywall. The game does not work on windows 11.
Where are you getting this information? The terrain textures are indeed ported over from Wings Over the Reich, which is payware, but every other mod is either freely available or still in development and not available anywhere. If you are being asked to pay (other than to buy Wings Over the Reich) you are being scammed.
it was on the mediafire site its say if i wanted to download more files i have pay. Also the game does not work on windows 11. Shame really. Thanks for the reply
@@Mulberry2000 I had a look at it and mediafire has made it confusing, probably intentionally. If you right click on the individual zip files you have the option to download them individually without upgrading to a premium account. As far as Windows 11 is concerned, I know for a fact that people have it running. I'm still on windows 10 so I can't give specifics. Thanks for the reply, the no cd patch does not work, it keeps asking me to put in cd 2. I have tried to download single files and mediafire does allow me to do so, it keeps asking me for money. Also I have tried a compatibility test and put the Cfs3.exe to windows xp service patch 3 but again it does not work. Also I have lowered the resolution in the compatibility settings to what was offered - again it does not work. I just gave up and put it down as a lost cause as the game refuses to run on windows 11. I have already been to the forum and tried to do what was suggested but no joy. The game is so old it cannot be run on windows 11. Right or left clicking on mediafile files does not work I have to pay to get It. Like I have said the game is too old, it will not work and it is a dead game etc. No I have not done bulk downloads.

Granted I have modded everything about my copy of CFS3, but I think the graphics and the depth of systems modeling in the Spitfire is better than the original Il-2 series. Graphically, the Great Battles Series is still better of course, but the systems modeling in the Spitfire is definitely ahead of what is in Great Battles and I find it a more satisfying experience to fly it.

@@Melvorgazh There are replica flight sticks for several WWII aircraft on the market. They are expensive, and I don't own one. I don't remember the manufacturer, but a Google search should give you what you are looking for.
Modding is altering or adding to the files of a game. Some games allow for more of this than others. CFS3 allows a significant amount of modding. Other games are much more limited. How you do it depends on the game, each one is different. If you want to get into modding a specific game, ask the people who are already doing it. For CFS3, you can find them at sim-outhouse.com. Mods are often made available to download and you can learn from those and asking questions about how to make your own.

How to fly with mouse instead of joystick?
If you are referring to the clickable cockpit, so far only the Spitfire in this video (download linked in the description) has it enabled. But it can be added to any aircraft if you have Ankor's shaders (also linked in the description) installed. If you are referring to actually flying the aircraft with a mouse, as far as I know, this isn't possible in CFS3. You would need to try a game with an arcade mode like War Thunder for that. If you're wanting to get into flight sims though, a joystick is well worth the investment.

I am more a modder than a player. I enjoy what I'm able to do with the CFS3 platform, even if the latest Il-2 offerings have more eye candy. And in the case of the Spitfire Mk.II seen here, we've actually coded more of the aircraft's systems than what is offered in the one in Cliffs of Dover Blitz.
Is this as good as WOTR? Have you tried WOTR?
I own WOTR and have flown it some. It's hard to compare the two since WOTR is commercially available and this video just shows my own heavily modded CFS3. WOTR is a great product but it is hard to mod it as extensively as I can CFS3. I'm a modder at heart, so my own CFS3 install is tweaked just how I like it, even though it is not as complete or polished in presentation as WOTR. I will say that this Spitfire (linked in the description) is much more complex from a systems detail perspective, and more demanding to fly than what you will find in WOTR.

Basically just looks like wings over the Reich.
It has a lot of similarities. WOTR is built on top of CFS3 just like this, and thus the scenery is compatible. I have ported the WOTR scenery into my modded version of CFS3, which gives it a similar look. The Spitfire I'm flying in this video is much more technically detailed and demanding than the one in WOTR, but WOTR remains more polished overall.

Microsoft abandoning this series is the biggest mistake in gaming history. Now we're stuck with P2W options such as the arcadic war thunder which isn't even close to what CFS 3 is, especially for it's time (2002).
Absolutely disgraceful of Microsoft. This was my childhood game I got for my birthday along with a MS sidewinder force feedback 2.
The fact that they dont even sell joysticks anymore with force feedback tells you everything about the current flying games out there. HOTAS is simply just boring in comparison.

@@MrRobertX70 your memory isn't wrong; it looked like trash when it came out twenty years ago. But since then, a small 3rd party community has been gradually improving it. This video is a couple years old now, and the look of the sim has improved even more since then.
Think it had or has some of the best damage modelling.
