On this channel we like to do a lot of dogfighting most videos are some sort of dogfight between 2 different aircraft as we explore their different capabilities. From time to time I like to dabble in Virtual Reality, I think VR is a great new technology and I love to show that stuff off for the channel from time to time.
If you prefer more up close and personal dogfights consider the IL-2 Sturmovik: Great Battle series and experience intense WWII aerial combat over famous battlefields such as Stalingrad, Moscow, Rhineland and Normandy. Fight in and against Russian, American, German, British warbirds such as the P-51 Mustang, P-47 Thunderbolt, Bf-109, FW-190, Spitfire, Hurricane and rugged IL-2 Sturmovik attack plane. You can also fly legendary SPADS, Fokkers and Camels in WWI dogfights over the trenches of WWI and discover your inner Red Baron! And all of this can be experienced in jaw dropping virtual reality!

So as mentioned at the end of the video, This is technically not the channel map, I believe it was Kuban actually, but I just wanted to get a feel for the whole Battle Of Britain thing, and also as shown at the end of the video there is a channel map coming to IL-2 so maybe once that drops we can do some more BoB content there. It’s a shame that Il-2 is unappreciated by so many in the DCS family. The airplane choices are so good.
Well I always unappreciated Il-2 because for most time I thought this game is literally only about plane IL-2 💀
I started with IL2, but after over 100 hours in DCS with warbirds, it felt really unimpressive to go back to IL2, so I stopped it, as of now IL2 is WW1 only for me.

I really want to get the p38 and use a yoke. I still have no idea why that fighter had a yoke, but I think it would be really fun to try.
I am actually lucky enough to know a Spitfire pilot who flew Spitfires from 1941 to the end of the war. He also flew the Hurricane, Blenheim and Defiant. He said he once flew a Spitfire through a double doored aircraft hangar! I said what did your CO say - he said he did it first! He also flew a Spitfire under the Forth bridge. He reckoned you wouldn't have been able to flew a Hurricane through a hangar as is got squirrely at very low level. He was shot down twice and has so many great tales. Still pretty sharp at 99 years old and an honour to chat to every time :)

I’m actually really loving how GS is trying out new things - new sims, planes etc. I’m actually really looking forward to all that - maybe the channel would get more diversified… Which I wouldn’t be opposed to at all ; )

When the Hurri blew up, I may have an explanation. 30mm cannons weren't usually on German aircraft this early, definitely not 109s. I'm assuming a fuel tank explosion from a 20mm minenenschloss (mine shelll round
yes, somewhat recently they redid fuel tank explosions and now they are quite common. ammo explosions are also possible
Bf 109 K ”Kurfürst” was the only model of 109s that was fitted with engine mounted 30mm mk108 cannon. All the BF109s in Battle of Britain campaign were E-models "Emil". E-models were armed with MG17 machineguns and MG-FF 20 mm cannons. So no 30mm cannons in Battle of Britain yet.

You’re producing some great videos GS, many of them with some historical significance. The chaos of these fights really comes across and how you’re often shot down by someone you never saw or fought against.
Wow, the VR adds a completely new level to everything. From ducking down under the glass when being shot at to the panicked checking 6, everything just feels better.

Jeez, and to think RAF pilots were flying 4-5 sorties a day is just mind-blowing. Takes some level of stamina and endurance to pull that off.
Well these were very young men, 18-23 most of them. When you want stamina and endurance, those are the guys to look for! 😁
@@-Zevin- Wow I never could have guessed that German and Russian pilots would fly for that long. But I completely agree, compared to modern fighters a Prop plane is much more hands on. Your also experiencing all those G's with the only protection being a fairly basic G suit. Its often forgotten how intense some campaigns were, especially those away from the wester theatre of war.
@@debbiestimac5175 Yup there really wasn't anyone better for the job. Those guys could fly for a year with some adrenaline and a dream. Its some seriously impressive stuff and mind-blowing how intense some of these dogfights could get.

I've been watching the channel a year or so, mostly from ps4 so i don't think i have commented before, just love the channel i don't play DCS or IL 2 don't even own a computer, but man do i love the content!! Watching the videos makes my imagination fly thinking about fighter jets and aerial warfare. But this VR IL2 suff is getting intense 😲 this video was beyond amazing!!

That’s the exact reason I purchased IL-2 over any DCS modules. WW2 dogfights in VR are just so much more satisfying.
@@Edgins275 Same. I was hooked on DCS, flying a computer for ages, learning all the procedures to fly an A10. Went back to have a look at IL2 (in VR), tried flying with a squad (Air Attack) in MP and had more fun in five minutes than I had in DCS for a year. There is no comparison. I only use DCS for helicopters now.
Awesome video, as always. Really enjoying the WW2 content and the IL-2 gameplay. A patient of mine was 6-years-old during the Battle of Britain. She can still recall watching the Hurricanes and Spitfires duelling with the 109’s and 190’s in the skies above her hometown. Her mother had to rush her and her siblings inside to keep them from being killed by falling debris. I can only imagine what that must have been like. Watching the deadly ballet in a digital battlefield makes for a nice substitute.
IL2: Cliffs of Dover (The actual Battle of Britain sim) is very soon getting new cloud tech and VR. I hope you check it out again when it arrives.

Great vid. From what I've read, the Hurricane was considered a superior gun platform to the Spit with its big straight wing and guns mounted in two blocks of four. It was maneuverable and quite robust. Bit of an underrated fighter.

I have only recently found you and I have been thinking about getting IL2 Sturmovik for a while but never pulled the trigger. I flew the old flight sims of the 90's as well as War Birds. Since finding you though, I have purchased IL2 and I couldn't be more impressed. I also downloaded DCS. So thanks to you for posting these videos and allowing me to see what I have been missing. Working on a set-up for my stick and throttle and soon will get the Oculus for the VR. I have learned a lot from watching your vids and I want to thank you so much for posting and sharing your insights.

Among the aircrew who fought the Battle of Britain were about 600 or so pilots from Czechoslovakia, Poland, Canada, New Zealand, and other nations pilots. If Britain had fallen, Europe as a whole would have fallen. World history would be very different.
I was in the RAF and I have spoken to men on both sides who fought this fight. They were almost all terrified during that kind of encounter.
Your ground crew can't repair a plane that is in the sea, so when you have no wingman left and you are on your own against 3 or 4 it's time to get it back to base.

Very nice video, great dog fighting and immersive experience. Probably the closest thing alongside historical footage and gun cams that can make us see and feel what happened in the skies of WW2.
Small inaccuracy, the FW190 first combat appearance was in August 1941, so it would not have been participating in the BoB.

Haven't played IL2 since the original. NGL, the flight experience in this game (at least in VR) looks more visceral and "real" than DCS! Great vid!

I'm going to give this a try with VR. You sparked my interest sir. I've played IL-2 before with a few clanpeople. It's a steep learning curve but I love ww2 aircombat.

Hey growling, thanks for making a video on the hurricane, me being polish this means a lot for me as my country's pilots flew the hurricane and took out 40% of the entire Luftwaffe, the 303 squadron was the polish squadron.
LOVE this game in VR. You truly forget for that split second your playing a game. I stalled my P51 the other day and damn near broke my hotas trying to recover. I died. lol
I love how the Hurricane and Spitfire went from having some of the weakest weapons in the .303, to one of the strongest in the Hispano 20mm

Thanks for the flight sim info. I have to admit I’m an old dude who gave up the combat air sim stuff in the mid 90s. Partly due to limited sim selection and partly due to Army stuff. Well, here I am sufficiently F’d up from combat from 2001-2010 with nothing to do. This IL-2 sim looks fantastic and the VR sounds intriguing. The WWI flights are a huge bonus! Thanks for posting your set up info, I’m checking what I can afford and on it. Any advice? Thanks again.

Edit: also you should get involved with the community. Players are always setting up squad flyouts like bomber formations and whatnot in multi-player along with tanks and stuff

That’s exactly why I told my wife I would give her a baby if she let me build a $4,000 rig this year. I have been playing DCS since I bought a Cyborg Stick and Flaming Cliffs 2 in 2009 after I joined an F-16 Unit. Never beat a campaign. Started playing in VR in late 2019 and I beat the Georgian/Bear Trap F-15 Campaign almost immediately. It’s just a whole different level of immersion.
4000 bucks for a rig, not much left for other components, let alone a good headset if you have to spend 3k on a GPU alone :D

Hurricane gun convergence was set at around 250-300 yards, a fighter wingspan should just touch the edges of the reticle. Assuming the game is histerically (sic) accurate, that's when you're gonna get 303 shredding
Spitfires were like the Mazda RX7, but Hurricanes were the huge Dodge RAM trucks. Built like tanks.
Of course, neither of them is a Mosquito, but not all aircraft could be :)

I have an idea for a video. Talk about hardware setup for these simulators especially with regards to using the Oculus 2.0 I have the Oculus and a pretty high end PC. I have now clue how to set stuff up to play either DCS or IL-2 using my joystic and the O.

The IL-2 content, the missions and the campaign it is a great approximation of WW2
I still remember, after several years, I played Microsoft Combat Flight Simulator 2, in the Pacific Theater. I was lining up on this one Zero, just managed to fire a puff at it and killed it! only time i was able to do that. I was expecting to engage it for longer!

Thrustmaster T.16000M FCS HOTAS, priced 100$ to 150$ depending where you buy it.

Cool! Remember, the Hurricane only does one thing better than the 109. Flat turn rate. Keep it more 2dimensional. I like it that you're flying England's work-horse. I believe this bird saved Briton more than any other single factor. Although having a comprehensive radar net helped alot as well.

From my experience in Il2 CloD, there is a setup for convergence point and as well how you mixing bullets AP, explosive and incendiary. Basically in Spit and Hurricane, you got ammo for 11 seconds of continuous fire. That's why you want to shoot the enemy directly on conversion point, out of it efficiency is practically reduced by 50% if you are good to be accurate with guns from only one wing.
I don't know how this is in Great Battles but in CloD you can set up your convergence, better pilots put it on long-distance but beginners set it closer but have to sneak much closer than. Also, the right wingspan setup is crucial as well that is why you have to memorize the wingspan for your opponent's plane and change it during flight depend on the target. This will increase your efficiency significantly in Spit or Hurrican.
You can also set up your convergence in Great Battles.

The "Harry Kane" cockpit really is extremely cramped, I guess even more so than the 109s. Really something you'll just experience in VR.
The only thing I hate about Il-2 in VR is the fact that the collimated reticle in any aircraft is practically invisible. They really need to change that somehow by giving an option so you don't have to sit in the exact sweet spot to be able to see it just barely. I can see them soooo much easier in the few DCS WWII modules we have, it's genuinely a night and day difference!

The battle of Britain was an interest I like to very much when reading about World War II.
Checking six on Hurricanes is almost futile, because the armor blocks rear vision.
It is why you perform a clearing turn regularly.

For me, the Hurricane is very slow and clearing turns further decrease it’s speed. I fly it in “Aces High” and one available option is 12 x .303’s instead of eight! Love it.

There's an interesting fact about Hurricane - some of them were send in Soviet Union, where russians changed Browning MG's to 12.7mm machine guns (quiet similar to .50 BMG), or two 12.7 machine guns and one 20mm cannon. That's a pity that there's no that version of fighter in IL-2 Shturmivok (as far as i know)

Have you looked into any Bass shaker mods like the Buttkicker gamer or some DIY solutions?
Heard those bring the VR immersion truly to the next level as you can really feel your plane slip, fire its guns or deploy its flaps and gear.

Check out Finnish Server multiplayer on IL-2. It's dope. Super realistic, and the aircraft choices change from early to late war as the seasons progress. Dynamic battlefield, air resupply to objectives, etc.
