It's technically 5 too, Harry and the hoe, Laura Linney and the gorge guy, Hugh Grant and Natalie, Colin Firth and his housemaid and then the two in the porno together. 😂
How did nobody mention the scene where Emma Thompson cries to Joni Mitchell and then pulls herself together before going out to the kids? That has to be one of the most amazing scenes because it says so much with absolutely no words
I think you should really do a watching of easy A, I know Tucci month is over but it's such a good movie worth talking about, and even though it's quiet a small role, Stanly is such a goal dad!!
I have seen maybe 20% of the films and enjoyed maybe 10-15%… some of my favorite episodes are for things I never have seen and have no interest in seeing - Highschool musical, greatest showmen, trolls, and minion movie are some of my favorite episodes and I will never watch any of them
My favourite facts about ‘Love Actually’: - The actors who played Sam and Joanna were in ‘Phineas and Ferb’ as Ferb and Vanessa. - Hugh Grant’s Dancing in 10 Downing Street was approved by the actor at the last minute.
In the director’s commentary, they said they had a storyline where Mr. Bean’s character was supposed to be an angel of some sort. And that’s why he showed up randomly throughout the movie and intervened in the ways he did. But they did away with the supernatural aspect of it at the end.
My only thing about them saying this film isn’t really about love; it’s mostly about non-romantic love. It’s about love for friends, your kids, your sibling, your music manager, your country (?) idk 😂 but that’s why I love this film.
So true! The family love of the drummer kid and his stepfather, bonding after the death of his mother. The lady who doesn't get her office romance because her brother needs her more, and the musician and his manager who, in the end is his best friend and longest lasting companion.
Miles is the real one here calling out an amazing movie “About Time”. It’s not so much a debatable guilty pleasure, it’s just great, so I doubt they’d ever have it on here.
I actually see the story about the family man cheating as being about the unravelling of the love story between the married couple, not the "love" between him and his secretary. I feel like you maybe interpret the love story theme in too positive a way (some love stories are tragic ones), at least as far into the ep as I am now. Fun ep as always tho :)
I disagree with the title because I love bits of it. Dame Queen Emma Thompson and that Joni Mitchell track was just brutal. It’s more shocking than a death scene. P.S. ROWAN Atkinson is never not iconic and the Gift Packing Scene is legendary.
THAT SCENE! Where she is crying in her room, ugh my heart. She is incredible in everything she is in but this role holds a special place in my heart. That vulnerability, and anyone who's ever loved someone deeply and come to realize that person loves someone else or just doesn't love you as much as you love them can relate. She is perfect.
35:39 I think someone with cheating habits will cheat wether they are in a monogamous or open relationship. Society will just be more likely to give the cheater a pass and not feel as bad (perhaps even blame) the non-cheating main partner for being in an open relationship.
You’re absolutely right. Cheaters will find a way to betray your trust no matter how open your relationship is. One of the saddest things in the world is when someone opens up their heart and just gets absolutely trampled for it.
I agree with Kelsey, this movie is a guilt. It did not make me happy. However, that gymnastics deleted scene with the adult body double was the funniest shit ever lmao
An underrated joke in the movie is the Prime Minster and the Employee in a car heading to the school with the conversation ending with “That was literally around the corner.”
1- the wedding videographer messed up the colour, that's why Keira's character asked to see the friend's tape 2- Rowan was suppose to have a more obvious role of the Christmas Ghost/Guardian, it got cut in the final edit 3- Kelsey's right: LA is a Cuffing Season movie 4- I'm looking up the word "posit" to see it's actually a word
Portuguese here 🖐 we DO NOT KISS on the mouth as a greeting, not even family members! That scene is so random. I don't know who wrote that scene, but it is not part of our culture🤬
Considering they went ahead with multiple workplace/cheating/inappropriate relationships, I’m sure cultural accuracy was not top priority lol I’m sorry it was a shit scene and not authentic, would have been a cool touch!
Yes, agreed, it's such a weird scene. Besides, he flies to Marseille France to get to this Portuguese village??? Just have him fly to Portugal or don't show the airport 🫠
My best friend loves this movie. Every year, she and one of her college friends get together to watch this movie and drink. I had to share this with her to see what she thought of your takes. So far she said “They’re just kinda complaining about how unrealistic all of the characters are.” 😆
Hear me out Kelsey! The movie begins and ends with Billy Mack trying to get his Christmas song to number 1 in the charts. There's drama about Christmas presents! There's a Christmas concert! It's def a Chrimbo movie
It's interesting how when Garrick mentioned that actors don't kiss until cameras are rolling, it got me thinking... for the past year I fell into the world of Thai BL and Taiwanese BL dramas, and they do intimacy training/camps with the actors. And yes, they kiss before filming, which makes a huge difference. You can tell which actors hate each other, and which respect each other, and one pair full-on said "yeah we're dating now, what of it?" Then you look at other media, sometimes I think they would benefit from this training. As you can tell which actors are truly comfortable with the others.
Tragic love stories are still love stories. Not all love ends well but it doesn’t mean it didn’t count. I had to edit to say that romantic love is also not the only type of love. There was definitely love in this film - family, friends, etc. Open relationships are great for some people but not everyone is built for that kind of relationship.
The point about how they cheat with the music!!! you could basically have someone say "I killed your dad" and have that woodwind section strike up and you'd be like "SO ROMANTIC 😭😭"
Disagree Kelsey, open relationships don't solve everything. People who cheat will cheat regardless, people who are stone cold monogamous won't change their minds that easily; if one person isn't on board it'll be a resentful half-ass attempt. And there's hella inclusivity issues surrounding the ENM community that I won't get into.
Couldn’t agree with you more. I don’t think anything blindsided me harder than getting cheated on in an open relationship. Like how was there all this leeway and freedom and he still broke the one rule we had? Turns out the correct answer was to just throw the whole partner away.
I think one thing to keep in mind about the Prime Minister's speech scene was that Love Actually released in 2003, just months after British Parliament approved the UK's participation in the invasion of Iraq, against the wishes of the majority of the British public at the time. Most felt like the UK was America's lap dog in that era (and to this day) and so having this film where a British PM actually stands up to the US President was a lot more impactful with that context.
24:27 i will never not be obsessed with the fact that EVERYONE, and i do mean everyone, seems to think that thomas sangster was peter pan at some point, and i don't know why! but i love it! he just give off peter pan energy???
Let's be real, this movie is about love. Not true love, but IRL love. Love IRL is MESSY, and that is exactly what this movie is. I don't necessarily love this movie in itself, but I love some of the actors portrayal of their characters. Hugh and Emma really make this movie for me.
Also, just for a bit of context about the Prime Minister Speech about Britain, at the time Bush was the President, and our prime minister at the time was being ripped to shreds by the country, because it seemed like he would roll over to all of Bush's demands. So this part of the movie was for the English lol
I didn't see this movie until I was in college, went in with high hopes and was disappointed--imo it's a weak film with a fantastic cast who did what they could with what they were given. But I can see why it's beloved by a lot of people. If I'd grown up with it or saw it when it came out I might've had a soft spot for it.
Ugh really? Almost every relationship in this movie is so toxic. I think people mostly only like it because of nostalgia, not because it's actually a good movie.
I love this podcast. But what I would like more than anything rn for the guilty pleasure podcast to do an episode on the 2022 ‘The Menu’. I think they would have so much fun with it.
The movie Music and Lyrics is in the same vein as this movie and it's stupid and fun. They have a song called "Pop Goes My Heart" that is still a banger!!
The one week where I actually watched the movie prior to the episode and I watched the TV version that didn't include the Martin Freeman plotline! I completely forgot about that storyline until they brought it up! I am so disappointed I missed out!
I love this movie, but I 100% agree with all the criticisms. I think the issue becomes when people use movies/cinema to dictate how they see the world. A movie can have problematic plot lines like this to make it entertaining, and just because it's entertaining, doesn't mean it should be done in real life. Most rom coms are not good examples of actual loving relationships. I think whenever people conflate the two, there's a recipe for disaster.
Watch About A Boy next year for Christmas! It’s great and terrible, has themes of depression and mental health problems, themes of family and connectivity. Hugh grant’s character is more douchey and yet more likeable than his love actually character. And Toni collette is phenomenal. Please please please!
this movie is 100% the definition of Guilty Pleasure. it's cheesy and romantic and fun to watch, yet problematic if you dig too deep. thus: Guilty Pleasure. ❤
Kelsey is so right but that’s why I love this movie. People are stupid, it’s reality and it makes us angry then happy then sad, and we feel all the emotions. Great movie.
So I’ve never seen this film but it is my aunt’s and cousin’s FAVORITE Christmas movie and I can’t wait to pull out some of these hot takes over the Christmas dinner table 😂😂😂
If you like Bill Nighy as a hot aging rock star then you also need to watch Pirate Radio (2009) with Phillip Seymour Hoffman and about a dozen other famous UK/Kiwi actors! It's about a group of radio DJs in the 1960s broadcasting frowned-upon rock jams to the British public from the open sea 🏴☠️ Sort of a cross between Almost Famous and Dunkirk?😆
My requests for the new year: ‘The Babysitter’ movies on Netflix, Llamageddon (I think Amazon Prime), and ‘The School of Good and Evil’ (a 2hr 39 minute epic journey on Netflix, and I’m not sure if it’s good but I enjoyed it?) I can back these all up if needs be.
The worst part about the "On Christmas you tell the truth" line is that he started the encounter by telling her to lie to her husband, his "best friend"
I don't know why they brought the whole September 11 thing into the movie in the first place (maybe Garrick was right in the fact that it was right near that time when it happened), but at the beginning of the film, they mention it in the context of what the passengers of the planes said over their phones in their last moments. The fact that their messages to their loved one were messages of love.
I had never seen this until a few years ago, and I'm still wondering why it became such a classic when the romances are so creepy when you really think about it.
I think it had a lot to do with the big names in the cast, because that's why I have a hard time admitting to myself how problematic more than half of it is. No matter what everyone else's story is, I will never get over the scene where Emma Thompson is crying alone in her room because she's realized her husband is a nasty cheat, it breaks my heart every time.
"it's brave of Zach to do this because 3/5 loves are an hr violation" I screamed
It's technically 5 too, Harry and the hoe, Laura Linney and the gorge guy, Hugh Grant and Natalie, Colin Firth and his housemaid and then the two in the porno together. 😂
Zach calling Thomas Sangster 'that kid' when they're the exact same age will forever be my favourite thing
How did nobody mention the scene where Emma Thompson cries to Joni Mitchell and then pulls herself together before going out to the kids? That has to be one of the most amazing scenes because it says so much with absolutely no words
As someone with kids who's been cheated on, that scene hits different now.
this scene and emma thompson are the only reasons i watch this film. otherwise i can't stand it lmao
the fact that the most innocent storyline in this movie is Martin Freeman filming porn
It's honestly the only storyline I enjoyed lol
Zach is so adamant about how creepy Andrew Lincoln was that I can’t help but wanna go back to September 2022 and give him a big hug.
kelsey can we get an update about zach's missing croc?
important
This episode was recorded the same day as that one.
And Keith Eats McDonalds Live
The Andrew Lincoln creepiness is compounded by the fact that Keira Knightly was 17 when she shot this movie
That reminds me, Scarlet Johnansson was 17 while shooting Lost In Translation!!!
I think you should really do a watching of easy A, I know Tucci month is over but it's such a good movie worth talking about, and even though it's quiet a small role, Stanly is such a goal dad!!
5:15 Garrick and Miles recreating ‘The Walking Dead’ is a separate show waiting to happen.
Let them see this pleasee..

Surprised Zach didn’t mention that Keira Knightley (Juliet) is only 5 years older than Thomas Brodie-Sangster (Sam) as a fun fact
As someone who loves ‘Pride and Prejudice’ (2005), I low-key fainted at “F**k Keira Knightley.”
Especially once you realise how young she was in this. I think she was like... 17? 18?
Miles is the real one here calling out an amazing movie “About Time”. It’s not so much a debatable guilty pleasure, it’s just great, so I doubt they’d ever have it on here.
About Time is so wonderful!

Love Actually is SUCH a creepy movie and I am very excited for the takes I am about to watch
I actually see the story about the family man cheating as being about the unravelling of the love story between the married couple, not the "love" between him and his secretary. If Kelsey can call a character in ‘Bridget Jones’ Diary’ by Moaning Myrtle then I think it’s ok to have Zach say Severus Snape 😂
The way I cackled at that gymnastics sequence!!
I read Keira Knightley was 17 when she filmed that movie which makes those scenes even more creepy.
People often forget how young she was in her movies. She was like 16 in Bend It Like Beckham and 17/18 in this.
Emma Thompson’s performance is stellar. That scene in the bedroom where she breaks and pulls it all back together? InSANE!
OK but Miles sounded EXACTLY like Jon Bernthal when he said "COME ON RICK"
I disagree with the title because I love bits of it. Dame Queen Emma Thompson and that Joni Mitchell track was just brutal. It’s more shocking than a death scene.
