Bombay Potatoes Using CANNED Potatoes! Are They Good?

  • I absolutely love Indian food. It's comforting, cheap and really tasty. Bombay potatoes are no exception and are really easy to make, and only uses a few spices. I wanted to do a stripped down cheaper version of my already uploaded bombay potatoes recipe, and I am also using canned potatoes which hopefully works!
    #bombaypotatoes #indianfood #cannedpotatoes
To make my bombay potatoes you will need:
    ►540g can of potatoes (sainsbury's 38p)
►1/2 a large red onion or 1 small
►2 tsp of ginger garlic paste
    ►1 green chilli
    ►1 tsp of ground coriander
    ►1/2 tsp of turmeric
    ►1/2 tsp of cumin seeds
    ►1 tsp of garam masala
►1 tsp of black mustard seeds
►A small bunch of fresh coriander
    ►Salt & oil for cooking

Top tip. If you wash those potatoes a couple of times and soak in cold water for a couple of hours you actually minimise that tannick, tinned taste you get from the canning process and the potato tastes better imho like fresh almost 🎉

Also you could maybe pierce the spuds to let them absorb some of the sauce flavour.

In defense of the tinned spud beyond just the immediate price thing, I have an immune condition and my energy levels vary wildly day by day. Some days the effort of just washing or peeling a handful of potatoes is roughly equivalent to running five marathons with a rucksack on my back, any efficiencies and effort savings I can make are a godsend. (Probably sacrelige coming from an Irishman .)
Recipe looks absolutely lush mate, another banger.

While in no way suggesting that it makes tinned potatoes cheaper than fresh, with high fuel costs, you need to factor that tinned potatoes don't take as long to cook.
Good old Sainsbury's Basics to the rescue! (Hubbards is just a re-branding - if you look on your receipt, some items still come up as Basics!)
I used to keep a couple of tinned baby new potatoes on hand for emergencies, and I found that a good rinse and soak reduced the flavour of the tin. I also used to steam them over a pan cooking something else.
We have an increasing popularity in one dish meals, which of course saves on fuel, but how about being one of the trailblazers for one ring meals?
It might even be a great justification for the purchase of a worktop induction ring.

    • @Adam_Garratt
      @Adam_Garratt  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

That's a good point. They take less cooking. And they were still nice and firm after cooking as some brands I find can be a bit mushy

When you are able. Take £10 and visit your nearest Asian supermarket and get the spices from there. First because you get way more for less, plus they are better quality. I'd go for these as you can make all kinds of dishes with them. Turmeric, garam masala, ground coriander, cumin and a chilli powder. I hope things get better for you my friend, well all of us. Take care

Made this tonight but without the fresh coriander(out of stock) and it was great, we both enjoyed it. Added a bit more onions, tomatoes and a little passata(to loosen it) to make it more of a main - would have added a little cooked chicken breast as well but I forgot to defrost it. 😅
Some comments I spotted on tinned potatoes - I love them but I know some get a "taste" that they don't like. I find that the "premium" ones need just a couple of rinses with water and then can be used. The "cheaper" ones can be washed by hand, rinsed and then soaked for a few hours in water before you use them. I also cut them up into quarters or if you get a big one(there usually is) - cut into six chunks.

These spuds look really nice Adam and years ago I could have devoured them but I’m afraid now I’d end up in the hospital A & E cos of the chilli and it’s not cos I don’t like it but it doesn’t like me. Guess I could make something similar minus the heat but then it wouldn’t be Bombay potatoes would it. It looks so good though. TFS. I don’t think we could get tinned spud under a couple of dollars, but then our cheapest little bag of potatoes is around $5 - $7. If we go for a drive we can pick them up (beautiful ones too) off the side of the road straight from the farmer $10 for 10 kilos so that’s not too bad I guess but this year I can’t drive anymore so that’s that for me lol. Have a great week, looking forward to your next video.

Amazing as always, you're a great chef. Fast, simple, delicious, and cheap which is great when you probably have rent every month. Potatoes are always great when you want to keep a meal cheap and easy. It's also nice that they so incredibly healthy that "Technically, the traditional white potato contains all the essential amino acids you need to build proteins, repair cells, and fight diseases. And eating just five of them a day would get you there." but it does follow that with "However, if you sustained on white potatoes alone, you would eventually run into vitamin and mineral deficiencies." So maybe add some fruit or something and you'll survive.

The 'air fryer' also makes popcorn ( include a caramel recipe) and heats......

    Bombay potatoes away!
I love that terminology 'Stripped Down'.
    It's better than gutted.
Reminds me of the line in Hunt for Red October.
'Stripped down and turn it into a flying gas can'....
Great use of the tinned tiny taters.
Bombing them is a fantastic idea using the basic but necessary spices and vegetables.
Was that the chilli seeds or the pepper seeds going surface to air. I find a quick pounding of the pepper stops it popping and also releases more flavour.

Mate, your food is so much cheaper than what we pay in Australia. The same tin costs me A$2.00 (~UK1.04)

The sputtering was caused by putting the ginger paste into hot oil. Ive done this myself.

It looks good Adam. Not sure if I would have that as a meal, but adding it chicken or beef, would be rather good

Best description I've heard. I avoid it on meals out when I know. Cannot understand why it isn't *marked* like various allergens

I think it depends a lot on the quality of the spuds. I've had some foul tasting tinned potatoes 🤣

The spitting occurred when you added in the garlic and ginger paste because oil and water don’t mix well.
