Actually, the T-1000 can feel emotions. That's why Skynet rendered the T-1000 obsolete, for fear that it would turn against Skynet. That's also why most Terminator's CPUs are set to "read only". Meaning that they can imitate the behaviors of other people, but they do not have a personality to call their own. The T-1000, along with the T-X, is set to "read/write". Meaning that they can imitate other behaviors and improvise on those behaviors. Granting them the ability to understand, and even feel, emotions. If you pay attention, you may notice instances where the T-1000 shows emotions such as fear, frustration, amusement, and possibly satisfaction. I don't know for certain, but I think that may be why you never see a T-1000 in the "future war" scenes. Because Skynet only used one.
Two things strike me about this scene: -when Todd and Janelle mention the 800 swinging by earlier, you could see the micro calculations the 1000 is making in that instance about how to answer them without arousing suspicion (great acting by Robert Patrick) -the 1000 is an advanced prototype over the 800 not only in physical strength and abilities but also in infiltration and how to deal with humans; you can see that he acts more naturally than the 800 does but there’s still something off or not quite right about him which shows the limit of Skynet’s programming (again, great acting by Robert Patrick) One bonus observation. The studio put a lot of pressure on James Cameron to cast an even bigger bodybuilding type than Arnold as the 1000 but Cameron resisted. He said the 1000 is an advanced more sleeker model over the 800 so while the 800 is a tank, the 1000 should be a Porsche. Well done, James Cameron.
One subtle detail is that when he gets out of the car he looks as though he is scanning the area for threats very precisely, at least that's what I got from that scene.
They were going to cast Billy Idol until he had a bad motorcycle accident. They also considered Blackie Lawless from W.A.S.P. but he was taller than Arnold.
I said something similar regarding the advanced model terminator in Dark Fate, people complained the character appeared too bland, normal, unremarkable. But that is what you would want in an infiltration machine. It should blend in.
"No. I wouldn't worry about him." Blink. I love that very deliberate blink at the end of the conversation, like he remembered that humans blink and he hadn't done enough of it.
He's a machine from an infiltration unit and advanced one. I am sure it has a small program that is executing blinks at human type interval. Machines don't remember, they just execute programs.
Robert Patrick KILLED it in this movie, his acting is absolutely perfect. The way the T-1000 acts is perfectly normal except for a very subtle something that makes him unsettling.
I like Terminator 1 more but you have to respect how this movie does the same stuff somewhat, but in a larger scale and more accessible to bigger audiences without becoming lame and Disney-esque. In Part 1, Arnold went house-to-house and killed "Sarah Connor" - here, Patrick just talks to people at their house for info (later killing them)
During the filming, Robert Patrick was "broke", living in a cheap apartment with his girlfriend, Barbara, whom he married during filming. He has credited the film with starting his career. This movie saved his life, he's come along way ever since.
He can't have been broke if he had money to pay for rent and a wedding (even a no-frills wedding.) I think by "broke" you mean "not loaded", which most Hollywood actors are!
If this was filmed back in 1991 that means I was also broke and living with my girlfriend in a council flat in South London. It didn't start my career though.
Funny enough, a recent interview with Robert said that's what they were going for. Wanted to imply to the viewers something was.......off with this guy. 😎
That shows how dangerous they really are. Unlike most terminators, t-1000 units can mimic emotions and human behavior patterns. Likely they're useful as spies and assassins.
Well-put! If a co-worker talked to me in the same way as the T-1000 talked to the parents, I'd think he was going to do something really bad to me later on.
Yeah like when he puts on a devilish facial expression for half a second after the guy mentions T800 had shown up in the morning... amazing idea and rendering by the actor!!
Not too long ago. I just came to realize that the viewer watching the film wasn't supposed to know T-1000 was sent to kill or protect John Connor. Huge spoiler twist in the trailer back then.
@@jot8000 True. They left it up for grabs til the last second. Didn't even know that the cop in the beginning was killed by the T-1000 AND hid one of his weapons[the blades] at the same time. Very excellent, subtle writing. Something we have lost.
@@anwarrazali2832 That's not it. But they can detect machines disguising as humans, which is why the resistance uses dogs to sniff out infiltration units like the T-800 in the future.
And yet it almost looks like emotion, which you would not expect. At other times the T-1000 seems to be capable of narcissism, like admiring its own arm after turning it into a blade to kill Todd.
@@stevekaczynski3793 that’s because the T-1000 IS capable of Emotions, they were just as Self Aware as Skynet (maybe more so) and that’s why they weren’t Mass Produced because they could make their own decisions which included going against Skynet’s interests.
which what made Terminator Sarah Conner Chronicles so special. Skynet had their hands full with TechCom reprogramming their cyborgs, Human Resistance turning the tide, and a faction of machines rebelling against SkyNet. This proves your point.
@@ShockingREDDIT-cl8xe It means "ironic or insincere" pretty much. The T-1000 saying "I wouldn't worry about HIM." has a double meaning. The Terminator is telling the step-parents that that "big guy" is nobody to worry about as far as they need to know but also that it's *smugly* aware that this other individual looking for John is most likely another human or Terminator unit the Resistance sent back in time to protect the boy.
@@zomeister8367 Not neccesarily, for all the t-1000 knew it could have been the same model as him or even another human send by the future resistance (like they send Kyle Reese).
Here's a fun fact: Robert Patrick held his breath during points when he was on-camera but wasn't speaking, just to give himself a subtly inhuman appearance.
@@williamshaw9047 I'm not being a douche, but that's how one should run. Your face should express Zen/nothingness to it during activity. This is my favorite film of all time. I'm 32 years old & am a defensive tactics instructor & an American Ninia Warrior/Gymnastics coach. The body mechanics in this movie are truly amazing. Even though they are terminators, James Cameron shows precise decisions that any athletic human should and would make to preserve one's organism. The only CGI part of the t800 doing his tuck/roll at the end of the tanker chase scene showed us parkour 30 years in advance of us understanding that type of technique world wide via the internet. There are so many subtleties of tactical intelligence performed in this movie, most of which without CGI, that should show us humans what we are capable of. The movie taught me how to move with absolute free will. Stunt Men & Women are the worlds unsung heroes.
Yes, the point is that during this time in a movie, we still didnt know which one of the two is there to kill John and which one to protect him. Since Arnie was the big bulky bad guy in the first movie, and the guardian was thiner, more agile protagonist, we were led to believe that T-1000 here in fact is maybe the one to protect him. Not untill the hallway scene do we actually find out which one protec and which one attac.
Yeah very natural. Still I do not understand why it wanted to keep picture of John Connor for itself though? Didn't T-1000 possess an image memory and cross check identification system within its memory? Maybe for not catching attention of Connor's family? It is supposed to be liquid metal with advanced computer. Lame. ^^
Miniature Plane you’ll notice the T1000 was asking around if anyone had seen John at the mall. I don’t think the photo was for itself. Rather, it was using the photograph to question others in public to narrow its search.
3:35 The fact that Todd and Janelle can only describe the T-800 as "a big guy on a bike" means the T-800 didn't even bother with a cover story when asking them for John's location.
Kryo Ruler of the Ninth Circle of Hell no shit He proably sounded like a creep when asking for John Thats Why they Said it to the cop/T 1000 cause they where worried For there son
I guess his foster parents wouldn't be surprised if a "big guy on a bike" came looking for John as he and his friend messed around with their dirtbikes and probably would've associated with someone like a bikie...
(John 11:25-26) "Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live:And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this?" Repent and turn to Christ Jesus before it is too late. For after this comes the JUDGMENT. Christ died for your sins and rose on the third day, showing that anyone who trusts in him for salvation, will have everlasting life. (John 3:16) For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
I've been wondering about this detail for a while too. Does T-1000 actually know that there's a T800 being sent back in time to protect John? Or T-1000 cannot know if it's another terminator model or just a human (someone like Kyle)? The fights later on and I remember a Cameron's interview revealed that the T-1000 didn't know anything about the T-800 that's why it had trouble dealing with the T-800 properly.
I remember when this film came out and I was a kid. Robert Patrick genuinely scared the hell out of me to the point where I had nightmares about him for weeks 🤣 Even now as an adult his facial expressions still creep me out. Initially curious why he needed the photo since he had the capability to capture the image. Then I remembered that later on he shows the photo to other kids to ask if they’ve seen him. Such a smart terminator.
Like Pietro Venucci in "The Adventure of the Six Napoleons" "'There he was dogged by his confederate, who held Beppo responsible for the loss of the pearl, and he stabbed him in the scuffle which followed.' 'If he was his confederate, why should he carry his photograph?' I asked. 'As a means of tracing him, if he wished to inquire about him from any third person. That was the obvious reason.'"
Its really cool that the T-1000 not only was far more advanced than the T-800 regarding all physical properties but also far more advanced in regards to blending in crowds and adapting its social game accordingly.
In my opinion T2 is one of the best films ever made, deffo in the top ten I'd say, just something about it and even though I've watched it a fair few times I can always watch it again!
The way the T-1000 acts here, even when he gets out of the car and has a look around, shows he's not just tougher to kill than the T-800, but a superior infiltrator as well. So much more human.
But he if he succeed to kill john connor what will he do next? Be like the T-800 who live in the forest hideout? and what happen to T-800 if he fail....?
It also projected a false sense of security to the audience because up to this point of the movie, no one knew who was supposed to be John's protector. And given Arnie's role in T1, you'd expect Robert Patrick's character to be that.
Actually there is a bit of humor to it, however, the in both the script and novelization, the T-1000 was not aware John Connor had a protector as the T-1000 was an advanced prototype sent just moments after the original T-800 and Kyle Reese went through the Time Displacement Equipment. The T-1000 was never linked up to the "Sky Net"work, as SkyNet feared it would learn just how powerful it was. The T-1000 had little to no knowledge of how a T-800 operates. The first scene that displays this is when they first engage in the mall. T-1000 simply empties a clip into the T-800 as of it would dispatch him. When it didn't, the T-1000 grabbed the shotgun as if he was stripping it from some human and, the T-1000 goes to toss the T-800 around like a rag doll... that's when the T-800 jerked back and tightened his grip on the shotgun, that's the moment the T-1000 knew it wasn't dealing with a human and the started busting down walls. The second scene is when the T-1000 thought it dispatches the T-800 by bashing it with the 40000lb manual lock and then runs a piece of steel through what he thought was the power core. He has no knowledge of the T-800s ability to reroute power and survive.
The amount of skill and talent that Robert Patrick put into this performance is astonishing The one blink to try and seem normal but looks so forced Note he never blinks in any other scenes The lack of breathing that he does to make it seem more machine like and the subtle looks and glances around him are like him scanning what’s going on around him The aura he puts off too is amazing When he’s talking and trying to act like a human you can just sense something off putting about it but he talks normally so everyone just nods it off The details in his waking and running are flawless A truly amazing performance and it’s even more remarkable that this was his career start up movie
Schwarzenegar in the first Terminator was excellent too as the villain but yeah Robert Patrick wins out overall as he plays that trusted authority figure/ruthless killing machine combination to perfection... I guess they portrayed different kinds of villain though.
Do American ATMs really work like that? In the UK, the PIN (not PIN Identification Number as it is at 4:08) is linked to the specific card inserted into the machine. There's no way to find a PIN from an ATM like that.
@@christopherdean1326 This was before cards were chipped. The PIN was kept in the bank's database that in turn was linked to the ATM. This scenario would be plausible but would take longer and require a much more powerful random number generator. @@blaineedwards8078 Sorry, I still can't figure out how it worked. @@christopherdean1326 Then he'd just find another ATM and card, and hack a different account. Yes. It is a personal identification number. "Thanks for your cooperation." And, this is why I originally thought that the T-1000 was John's protector while the Terminator was the bad guy, as he was in the first film in 1984. Here, the T-1000 was so friendly and polite. I had no idea at this point in the film that he was the bad guy. It wasn't until a certain scene at the Galleria mall...which I won't spoil for everyone else. Who knew at this point that he would end up being the bad guy?
That was the point. The assumption was that he was the good guy as Arnold was the villain in the original. However, given the high profile status of Schwarzenegger at this point in his career, it was pretty obvious he was gonna play the hero Terminator. But Cameron still wanted to keep audiences guessing.
It's a shame the trailers of the time spoiled the twist. I can only imagine how much of a thing it would've been if more people had gone into the film not knowing.
@@andymac4883 I can honestly say that I either never saw the trailers or I don't remember seeing them. Thus, I was surprised when things took an unexpected turn in the Galleria mall.
Yeah, you can see the ambiguity as to who the hero is up to the first encounter in the Galleria back corridor. But there is a pretty obvious give away early on. Upon arrival, T800 doesn't kill any of the bikers to obtain clothes, weapons and transport. Whereas T1000 kills a cop immediately and assumes his credentials to begin infiltrating. Compared to the first film, we didn't know which out of terminator or Reese was the hero, except for the hint that terminator kills the punks (and the gun store guy), whereas Reese escapes the police chase without harming any of the officers. Killing (and combat) is nothing to all 4 characters but their choice of how to act speak louder volumes about their intentions.
@C We don't know for sure if he actually killed the police officer upon his arrival. Well, at least, I didn't know when I saw the film. Since I never saw the trailers for Terminator 2: Judgment Day, for all I knew, the T-1000 could have simply knocked out the officer and stolen his clothes. Look at the scene again when he "kills" the police officer. There is no blood. Had he killed him with that arm blade of his (as he does with other victims later on), blood would have been seen pouring out. To me, it just looked like the T-1000 knocked out the officer with a well-aimed punch. Thus, it was difficult to tell which Terminator was the bad one until the surprise reveal at the Galleria.

With shape shifting abilities, it can make the ideal undercover cop. All these abilities plus its superstrength would also make it a fine firefighter or first responder, as it can store all medical knowledge in its memory banks....
It's impressive how this franchise has two all time great villains in cinema, and Robert had a pretty tough act to follow appearing as the villain after Arnold's T800 in the 1984 film.
Simply Now The actor is human of course but I’m talking about how he acts in the movie because he is not a human in the movie. He is a more advanced terminator.
I absolutely love when Robert Patrick as T-1000 flips from an emotionless killing machine to a kind police officer.
Since when were police officers kind 🤣🤣
@in4mus85 bruh cops can be nice I’ve met a lot of police officers and they were all friendly
@@ryederforbs9072 I actually thought, that the T-1000 was artificial life. He was screaming in pain and suffering, before finally being terminated.
The T-1000 is the new, user friendly model Terminator. If he can’t kill you with kindness, rest assured he will find another way.
Two things strike me about this scene:
-when Todd and Janelle mention the 800 swinging by earlier, you could see the micro calculations the 1000 is making in that instance about how to answer them without arousing suspicion (great acting by Robert Patrick)
-the 1000 is an advanced prototype over the 800 not only in physical strength and abilities but also in infiltration and how to deal with humans; you can see that he acts more naturally than the 800 does but there’s still something off or not quite right about him which shows the limit of Skynet’s programming (again, great acting by Robert Patrick)
One bonus observation.
Hmmm very informative thanks for thatt
They were going to cast Billy Idol until he had a bad motorcycle accident. They also considered Blackie Lawless from W.A.S.P. but he was taller than Arnold.
I said something similar regarding the advanced model terminator in Dark Fate, people complained the character appeared too bland, normal, unremarkable.
But that is what you would want in an infiltration machine. It should blend in.
And the T-X is a Ferrari
"No. I wouldn't worry about him." Blink.
I love that very deliberate blink at the end of the conversation, like he remembered that humans blink and he hadn't done enough of it.

I like Terminator 1 more but you have to respect how this movie does the same stuff somewhat, but in a larger scale and more accessible to bigger audiences

During the filming, Robert Patrick was "broke", living in a cheap apartment with his girlfriend, Barbara, whom he married during filming. He has credited the film with starting his career. This movie saved his life, he's come along way ever since.

'If he was his confederate, why should he carry his photograph?' I asked.
'As a means of tracing him, if he wished to inquire about him from any third person. That was the obvious reason.'"

the inflection when the t-1000 says "No, I wouldn't worry about _him_ " is perfect. He's the one they have to worry about.
That's certainly true, as the T-1000 comes back to kill them.

And, this is why I originally thought that the T-1000 was John's protector while the Terminator was the bad guy, as he was in the first film in 1984.
Back when the acting was serious and the humor was delivered subtly and efficiently without breaking the film's overall atmosphere

This conversation right here is what makes the T-1000 so damn terrifying. He presents so well, he has great social skills, he's confident, adaptive and shows incredible charisma... And then underneath all of that, he's an assassin designed and programmed to kill. You wouldn't suspect him in a crowd of a million, and that's a horrifying thought.
To add even more to the paranoia fuel.
He can be everyone, your nice neighbor you always had a nice cup of tea with, your teacher, classmate, friend, even the floor, or the mirror, everyone and many things and if you know about his skills and know he could be everyone, you cannot trust anybody again, you are alone, you need to survive, you need to be on the run constantly.
