My 50+ fitness jump rope journey. Day 2. 54 years old and determined to master this if it kills me!

  • I’m on day 2 of my jump rope journey, to see if I can tone up and build core strength through skipping/jump rope. Skipping (as we call it in the UK) was my major pastime at home and in the playground/school yard. Nothing as posh as a proper jump rope, just a length of green rope left over from my father’s water-ski line.
I was going to make this video really short, however, I don’t want to make this challenge look easier than it is, because it’s bloody tough! I see young women bouncing all over social media with their jump ropes, like they came out of the womb clutching the jump rope handles, but at 54, it’s pushing me outside of my comfort and fitness zone, not to mention trying my patience and giving my heart a much needed work out.
Head to my blog fiftysister.com/blog for information on the ropes I’m using and an idea to help with pelvic floor incidents. You can use discount code FIFTYSISTER at the checkout on the DOPE ROPES website: doperopes.com/...
I’m committed to this challenge for 30 days, then I will assess whether I want to continue for another 11 months. It will be interesting to see what I can achieve as a woman in my mid fifties, who hasn’t skipped since maybe the age of 12. I’m not trying to lose weight, I’m determined to tone up and increase my level of fitness, which has diminished slightly since moving to Portugal. I am already thinking about how I can keep going in the heat of summer - I may need to move indoors to stay cool. I will worry about that if I make it that far.
Stay tuned in for my jump rope journey. If I can do it, anyone can.
Thanks for stopping by, I hope you have a beautiful day.
    Gail x

Don’t you love it when people tell you what you should be doing. It’s a great start and I’m sure your technique will improve. Don’t let people “should” on you. I expect by now you have watched a few instructional vids and your technique is great. Well done.

You are an inspiration! I must have misunderstood - I thought in another video you said you started day one with 20 jumps and day 30 with 2000. So I started today, my day #1; not sure what number or jumps or minutes I'll target today, but it will progress day by day.

Same age here. Initially, only jump no more than three times a week to avoid shin splints. Increase number of jumps gradually. Err on the side of caution. No need to bee heroic. You will progress if you proceed cautiously. GL

I think it is very telling that Gail was plant based for years and quite active yet still managed to be 30 lbs overweight in her early 50's. It was not until she added intermittent fasting that she lost the weight and has convinced me (very reluctantly) to try it since I have exhausted every other avenue of diet and exercise around. Although impressive for fitness, jump rope is really just the icing on the cake. At my age I'll probably stick to rebounding since I doubt I could get off the ground enough to clear the rope.

  • @pilirodz
    @pilirodz 2 ปีที่แล้ว +15

In my opinion is too long. That makes you work harder and not necessarily better. With it a little shorter is “easier”. It’s a wrist movement more than an forearm movement. You are not supposed to have to jump high, that happens because is too long.

Swimming and aqua aerobics for me as I have been told to be careful what excersise I do as I have a prolapse.
I'm 60 I feel very limited to what I can do
It's very hard to except I can only do certain exercises.

Many of us who are blessed with children have prolapse(s). The key to kick starting metabolism is HIT. High intensity training (science). Simply raise your heart rate for 1 minute and slow down for 1-2 minutes and raise it again. You can do that without impact. You can use three stairs and walk up and down. You can sit on the stairs and bridge using arm muscles to lift your weight (also raising heart rate). Just think stop and go in your routine. There are many videos on how to breathe so that you are not pressing down on your pelvic floor. I love hiking and I check my prolapse daily in the shower. If needed I rest my hands on my abdomen and breathe squeezing and lifting the prolapse back up. It’s an important pelvic floor routine. Several months ago my gyno said my uterus prolapse was barely detectable. He had to check his records. The best thing for prolapse is yoga because breathing is the most important part of recovery. In the beginning, I did use a device to stimulate the muscles and it taught me what the muscles felt like because I had difficulty doing keigels correctly. Posture training is helpful. There is a long list of things that you can do. Any long distance walking that I do or climbing, I breathe and draw the muscle back up. I met a woman whose insides came out and so I make pelvic floor strengthening part of my routine , but I only avoid strenuous activity to that weakened area. I felt very defeated as you in the beginning. When you breathe correctly, you can lie down insert your finger and feel it rise. The point is you Do have control.

Inflammation is part of aging and that should be a sign to start an anti inflammatory diet. The essential nutrient for my inflammatory autoimmune disease is omega 3 fatty acid. I gave up gluten and sugar because my inflammation was debilitating, I was in bed for 6 months with extreme pain in every joint. 2000 mg is the medical research dosage. I also drink grass fed organic bone broth for the collagen to replace what is lost with age. It is also rich in amino acids such as glycine. Have your vitamin d levels checked and take 100mg of K2 and magnesium 400 mg because d3, magnesium, and k2 is the holy trinity to help you absorb calcium and prevent calcium from depositing in arteries through the blood and instead being absorbed into the bones where it belongs. This prevents needing calcium supplements and helps the process. 1. Address * inflammation a symptom of disease progression. 2. * Bone health. Nutrition and exercise are necessary and pain is always a symptom of needing a lifestyle change to reduce inflammation because changes happen on a cellular level such as oxidation. Inflammation of the heart is a heart attack. Inflammation to cells is cell death . You can have your inflammatory markers tested. If you have joint issues don’t impact those joints until you’ve resolved inflammation. My setback robbed a year if my life and I rapidly lost muscle strength that I am slowly building back because I ignored many aches and pains that began a process. My neighbor has had knee surgery and continues to jog. Her knee today and her hips next, but some people just dismiss their bodies warning signs. I did as well. There is no mind over matter when it comes to pain. Take care of it now because it catches up in ways I couldn’t have imagined. Healthy one day and debilitated the next.

WARNING - I was thrilled to rediscover jump roping. Felt AMAZING to have a good cardio workout in such a short period of time, BUT...fast forward 6 weeks and I'm unable to do any type of exercise as I've developed plantar fasciitis from my jump rope sessions. This comment is not meant to hate on FiftySister by any means, I love her energy and videos. I only want to warn people to GO EASY at first and make sure it is the right workout for you. I didn't feel ANY pain while I was jumping but only after doing it for several sessions over the span of a few weeks did I develop my plantar fasciitis. And let me tell you, it is PAINFUL now to simply walk. I am a fit 60 year old with no weight issues, just like trying new forms of exercise. I'm so sorry I ever picked up a jump rope again. :(

First thing to look at is tight calf muscles and then rehab the feet. Don’t just do a straight leg calf stretch do a soft knee calf stretch also to get the other part of the muscle. This doesn’t have to be permanent.

these so called "positive" comments are doing more harm than good. to be clear, you are having issues because of the following: 1. your rope is improperly sized. 2. you should be only using your WRISTS to move the rope. 3. you are jumping too high off the ground, and not only that you should be on the balls of your feet, NOT flat footed. 4. you shouldnt be trying cross overs or criss crossing until you can learn the basics such as the "boxer step". 5. you need to get some base "rhythm". try jumping rope to music. seriously, if you continue to NOT correct the above suggestions your jump rope journey will continue to be a overly taxing disaster
