- HUGE news from the Funny Car Chaos race at Texas Motorplex as a new Nitro Altered world record was set by Richard Hartman in Tim Wilkerson’s car, 4.92 at 304.53 mph! Hartman is the first altered to break the 300 MPH barrier, taking down the previous record which was set back in '05.

@@MichaelJMetz It's not 1/8 mile, NHRA for its Top Fuel and Funny Car classes shortened track length to 1000 ft. because speeds were getting too high.

a proper net system was going to kill someone eventually.
I remember when Don Garlits broke the eight second mark for the quarter back in the sixties driving Swamp Rat 1. We were convinced it wold be impossible to go any faster.
@Nitro Martini - My other favorites were Charlie Smith's Plain Vanilla A/altered. Stone Woods Cook Willys. Tommy Ivo four engine Buick dragster. Little Red Wagon. Bloody Mary motorcycle with the 327 chevy mounted sideways. Big John Mazmanian Willys.
I remember back in the early 2000's watching VW Paradise break 200 mph in their rail. Was the first 4 banger to do it in a quarter mile at the time.
Or in the 70's when Grumpy Jenkins put a Camaro into the sevens...
@Nitro Martini Huh??? Don Garlits run over 300mph himself... You have to remember the top fuel record is 338mph.
Thanks for reminding me of when it was back in the days that I first became interested in Drag racing, I was first a huge NASCAR fan. Besides Big Daddy, I was also into Tom The Mongoose McEwen and Don The Snake Prudhomme. John Force kept that interest going for a while however it has slowly faded now.
I was sitting about four hundred feet from the start. When he got to the eighth mile the front tires came up and the rear tires started smoking all the way to the quarter. It was something to see. What a badass run.
@@vannomad6458 Couldn’t say if they were still in the air at the quarter,to much speed and smoke,but it definitely picked em up at the eighth when it hit hi gear. It was an awesome run to witness.
Yeah, he can still drive!! You know that there is so much more in that car as well! This made my whole year I think seeing this. I just wish I was there in person! Effing awesome!
If it would have hooked up & run straight it might of been a 320 mph!? Same tune up and a little more rear wing.... still a lot of potential in that car.

Yep! This is Tim Wilkerson funny car setup in a fuel altered! Running a fuel altered through the quarter mile at 300 miles an hour, with Richard Hartman driving, with Tim Wilkerson and his guys working on it. Yeah, this is drag racing is about right here! Hell yeah!

@@M1Anut - it was full 2/4 mile. The car was making an exhibition pass and therefore is not subject to the NHRA 1000’ rule.

There was a lot of speed left on the table.
A lot of tire smoke on the big end that probably cost 10 mph or more.
Making enough downforce on an altered body is extremely hard to keep it from hazing the tires.

Tim Wilkerson is on to something . This could be big . Everybody wants to change from the mega fuel cars that we have today . They've got to be way too expensive . Another phenomenon that NHRA should look at is Larry McBride . Thousands of people would tune in to see him go 5.50 on a motorcycle. Wake up NHRA you've got people's attention that wake up

Unreal, that a guy could keep a AA/FA straight enough to MAKE a full pass, with his right foot pressing on the "loud pedal' the whole time. Prepped track, I presume? In '75, North American Grand Nationals--Detroit Dragway--been closed for years now, a damn trucking terminal, of all things--at the end of the meet, on Sunday, Walt's Puffer, a '23 T-Bucket AA/FA, with a Donovan 417 in it, made an Exhibition run--I was diggin' it, 'cause I had worked across the street from Walt's Auto Parts, at Stacey's Mobil, for a few years. Wally had been "naughty" out at Milan Dragway previously, and his Competition License had been yanked. Different driver, too short to reach the pedals properly, he launched the car---ON the gas, OFF the gas---ON the gas, OFF the gas, ON the gas, and through the traps--damn car was (literally!) sideways, with the right rear hangin' out, every TIME he mashed his right foot--car STILL ran a 7.11, on a weekend where The Blue Max set low E.T. of the meet, 5.99, on Friday night, on an "arrow straight" pass. I'm not sure, but Walt's good friend Wild Willy Borsch (RIP) may have been the driver that day. I remember that run like it was yesterday. Memories...

By the way my Alaskan friend in the Alaskan Grizzly has the 4th fastest et in an altered, run at Alaska raceway park, been fortunate to see him race the late Ron Fassel in the Pepsi altered and great retired guy Ricky Ruiz up here! Definitely have come a long ways from running an old rear distributer 1950's hemi in some old steel body from the 30's or 40's. I guess modern funny cars are kind of what the FA class used to be ( just add a fiberglass shell ).

Machines like this need a longer track. You blink and it's over. Ok. People have proved we can go fast. Now how about some endurance. 1/2 mile 3/4 mile. Myself I'd push for the 1 mile track.
If they were to do half or standing mile events, they’d have to use a hard tire. The wrinkle walls they use can’t handle much more speed.
I thought Funny Car/Top fuel ran 1000 ft now, not 1320 ft. ???
TF and FC do run 1000 ft. Fuel altereds still run 1/4.

First off I love Alterds, real Alterds not just a modern funny cay chassis with a roadster body and wings. With enough dollars the question is why shouldn't it go 300 plus?
Because an altered doesn’t have the aero advantage. Even in this pass, it was spinning the tire on the big end.

I don't really wanna be "that guy" but this didn't really impress me. It's a damn Top Fuel Funny car with an Altered body on it. It is absolutely nothing like the original fuel altereds. I know this progress and improve but they shouldn't call it an Altered. I know I sound like an asshole.
