I just got picked up my baby ball python a couple weeks ago. He's my first snake.
When I was at the store looking, there were four babies whom were very loose and exploring around in their tanks. They looked like they were all well-fed. Then I got to the last tank in the corner, and I saw this little baby all coiled up in the back, not moving at all. He was very tiny and hadn't moved once in the hour or so that I was there, and he looked especially tense and isolative compared to the rest. I asked to take him out, and when he was placed in my hands, he was frozen like a rock for a long time, like a little rubber ball. He was terrified and never changed body position from when he was in his corner. Just when he finally eased his head out, a little girl walked by like 5 feet away, and that was enough to make him snap his head back like a rubber band and bury his head. It startled me a bit, and we put the little guy back in his tank. I've never even owned a snake and was tempted to adopt one of the more easy-going snakes because this one seemed like a handful of nerves, but for some reason I knew I had to have him, so I was in the store later that week buying the habitat and all the supplies, and of course, the baby :)
First day, after setting up his tank, I took him out of his worm container and he was couped up in a little knot, just his little tongue flickering, just like the first day I saw him. I had to hold him for about ten minutes and gently nudge his back before I got the poor little guy unraveled and moving, which he did reluctantly. I was nervous as heck. The next days were of me getting over my nerves and getting him over his, and he was quite literally a little ball of nerves. I was always nervous when I was going to cross him wrongly and he strike at me, but he never did. He hasn't been a striker when he's scared; he always flees. There's been many, many times these past couple weeks where I'd accidently cross my hand near his head and he snaps back into a ball like an elastic band, literally scaring the shit out of him, and yet, he's never snapped at me. with all the times my inexperienced self should have been bitten, he ends up in a ball instead. Poor baby snake! The only resemblance of eminent aggression he's shown me was a couple times where I've walked towards his tank when he's facing it and he tenses up into an S at the neck, so I move my hand to test his reaction and he always flees into his hide. He's never once struck.
I've handled him every day except for one or two, the day after I brought him back to college after a trip home being one of them because he was stressed after all the movement. I know a lot of people say not to handle him every day and no more then 10-20 minutes but ehhhhh screw em. I handle him every day with my bare hands, no hooks. There's a chance it stresses him, because he is a defensive reptile, but I think it's getting me in his head in a good way more than anything because he has not shown any body language of being overwhelmed by the time I put him back. I'll cool it with the handling when he matures and has learned me as much as he is ever going to. It took me two weeks of being gentle and patient with him, and now I have him weaving through my hands, almost totally not head-shy with the exception of a flinch here or there, and I have him coming up to explore my face now and climb my shoulders. If I stroke the top of his head, he pushes his head up like a dog being pet.
Two weeks ago, this was a terrified baby ball python that would take 10 minutes to leave his ball and would flinch at a shadow. Now, I'm his personal tree.
What I do know about snakes is that there is no part about them having human contact that is natural or biologically adapted, but if you're graceful with them and handle them with regards to their perspective of you, they end up getting used to you and actually see you as a safe space. They're seen as these actively-aggressive creatures, when really they are shy, sedentary animals whom get defensive out of fear. When you have a snake, you realize that they're actually very vulnerable, nervous animals whom will cling to you if you're gentle with them and take care of them. It's really a nice thing

I've only ever known one "mean" ball python. But he was completely blind, and any time you put anything in his cage he struck at it. It was totally fear based. He was also live fed so I think that added to it. But I do believe that balls are beautiful, gentle creatures by nature that need a little help and understanding sometimes.

Marlissa Cunningham My ball python sadly went blind. One day when I went to feed him I stupidly didn't pay attention and he bit me by accident. He retracted straight away and hid. That's the only time he ever 'hurt' me.

My mom has ophidiophobia, so i'm not allowed to have one of these. I have a bearded dragon, a crested gecko and a Mediterranean house gecko, and i love them all, but ohhh...i sincerely wish i could have a ball python. Funnily enough, i am petrified by spider webs. Not spiders, just their webs. And seeing as how webs are on everything EVER, i have noticed whenever i am holding a snake, i fear nothing. Using comforting animals to help conquer fear is something used in therapy, which i can't possibly afford. If i had a gentle ball python around my neck, i know i could feel less chained down by this crippling and bizarre phobia. Snakes fill me with a warmth and comfort no other animal can, and it's strange but they're my comfort animal. Just watching videos of them riles me up, glad to see yours are healthy and loved.

My friend had a ball python that is a ESA (emotional support animal) which is a bit different than a service animal due to the fact that there is no "training" or "testing" them to be certified. She has social anxiety and had ptsd due to her father having a very bad car accident which she has now overcome with the help of her ball python. Maybe you can convince your mother to allow you to have a ball python as a ESA. (It also depends which country/state you live in)

I just got a female honey bee yesterday from an expo that looks just like your guy. She has the same stiffness and mannerisms, but coming from an expo filled with people and nowhere to hide I can expect her to be stressed and fearful. I'm giving her some time to settle with a towel over her cage for now. Hoping she'll calm down in the next week

You clearly have such a love and respect for these animals. Its such a breath of fresh air to see an owner that doesn't think its just a game when the babies get into a routine of striking.

Good video. Another thing I've noticed is, if they do strike at you, or bite you, don't freak out, and just throw them back in their cage/tub. Just balling them back up in your hand, and letting them relax, and come back out when they are comfortable, seems to help for me.

Do snakes eventually identify individuals by smell (as well as consistent interaction, meaning: calm, safe, quiet, etc)?
Do older (rescue/2ndhand) ball pythons adapt to new handler/owners with this same technique?
-what duration does it take? (would like to get one eventually, but probably would do rescue(s) 1st) Thanks!

  • @patriciam4123

Wonderful vid and simple technique. Can't imagine anyone wanting his/her snake to needlessly strike. It's bad for the snake and a very bad first impression for people interested in having them as pets. Seen bad things happen to animals who've had the misfortune of having bad owners. Teaching and encouraging bad behavior. It's sad, because in the end. The animal pays the ultimate price. Thanks again for the vid. Ive been researching for months and watching many vids on the subject before I decide if and when I am ready to take the plunge and add a ball python to my family.

I don't think you can "teach "a snake, or any reptile for that matter, to be aggressive. If you neglect them or tease them you could possibly make them viv defensive. I've never heard of anyone who has taught there reptile to be aggressive.

this is a good video my man because some people have different fear levels of their snake and I believe they pick up on that. before I pick mine up I just relax, give them a stroke then pick up never had any issues but I know some people won't be comfortable doing that right away and use the hook and tweezer at first which is fine like you said. and also I think some people get the curious "s" shape confused with the aggressive one because sometimes mine pause in a lax pattern like that when they're about to change direction! lol

Mine isn't even remotely aggressive as you know ( I changed my TH-cam name, it's "Seviper" ), it's at the point where I haven't used the towel for over three weeks and when I go to pick him up in the mornings, I just stick my hand in there and pick him up from the side. I've learned so much about my snake, I would often misunderstand him, I was worried I'd messed up when he was in a striking position at night times with his head poked out of his hide... but in reality, he was expecting food. Another awesome thing about our bond is that I can touch his head. That should give you an incentive on how much my BP trusts me. He definitely eats like a boa. He's going to be fed today and I know he's going to strike and wrap around that mouse in 4-6 seconds. I think getting BP's to trust you probably isn't very hard.
EDIT :: My BP has never balled up from being stressed but I know the first couple of times he was a little scared, but I worked with him and now we're like best friends!

great video I got a little male that acts this same way an I've practiced this same stuff your talking about and he has come a loooong way still working with him though he eats like a champ so that's a good thing but I hate when people say they have an aggressive baby BP and then they let it strike at them or even bite them and think it's funny it's not aggressive it's scared and doing the only thing it knows to protect itself making it strike and bite is not helping anything. cool video man.

+Balls2U thanks bud your videos have been a great help and I will keep on it for sure I can kiss my butter girl on the head and she doesn't even flinch I want to get him to that point lol I've only had him about two weeks and he's just a few months old so I'm still letting him settle in and working with him a few times a week hopefully with any luck I'll be able to try a shot at breeding him to my butter next year he is a super pastel fire, but I'm still trying to learn up on breeding as well thanks again.

Another excellent video, I was lucky because my banana was 7 months old when I first got him, but I did use a hook at first BUT, that was only to gently stroke his back and now I just go in and stroke his back with my hand now and pick him straight up. I also handle him every day EXCEPT Sunday when he gets fed and Monday while he is digesting.

Great great video, to many times I see (tub) snakes that are really reactive and strike out because they aren't being handled enough. As keepers we should be handling all of our snakes so they know they don't have to fear humans. I believe fear contributes to a large amount of problems like not feeding and an overall stressed out animal. I just picked up a baby mojave banana that would continuously strike the second you picked him up, it's been 2 weeks of me handling him twice a day for 10 to 15 minutes at a time and he is now totally secure while he is being held, he still gets a little nervous when I first lift his hide but that's totally normal for any animal.

+Balls2U cheers mate, gunna be breeding a cinnebee to a pastel, the reason that I'm watching this is due to the pastel male being a bit of a knob, he's about 3 years old and has always been a bit uncertain in temperament, but he's recently got a bit worse, I think it's because I haven't really been giving him a huge amount of attention due to work!
