Homelanders feelings for Ryan give his character more depth and makes me empathize with him more.

100% agree. He sees himself in Ryan and truly wants what’s best for him. Unfortunately what homelander thinks is best for him vs what actually is are 2 different things.

@@steveclapper5424 Imo, if Ryan goes bad, he will end up as a more morale less and childish than Homelander. Ryan, by having zero discipline and can do no wrong, will act compulsively, Homelander's thoughts thru the seasons were kept at bay because he knew he had to keep Vought's Super Hero image to be loved. Ryan will feel loved from his father, which is all he needs to feel confident to act however he pleases. Homelander thought about killing those who don't like him but, Ryan will be encouraged to actually do it.

Homelander is such a relatable character he represents young broken men in the modern age. Especially with the negative effects of social media and trying to preserve a public image, hiding your true beliefs and personality to please everyone else and avoid being canceled while being insecure about your self image. That coupled with the loneliness homelander feels makes him much more relatable. The fact that he's a sociopath and a guy boss also makes him somewhat more likable for guys now a days much like the joker and Patrick bateman.

    • @Sports_Questionmark_Podcast

Yes I agree homelander is a broken man who deserved so so much better. Let’s just not forget though while really cool. The joker, Patrick Bateman and homelander are all the bad guys. Great movie characters and iconic but the bad guy. They shouldn’t be modeled but like you said used as an example on how we as men and a society can improve

The best part about Home lander, is that he knows (to his own fucked minds up extent) that he was raised wrong, but doesn't or cannot remedy this and continues doing what he does. When Ryan comes in, he wants to raise him as best as possible, (again in his own fucked up way)

Love the content, this video made a very interesting overlap clear to me, between homelander and the dark triad of personality traits, never has there been such a perfect example of these traits (narcissism, Machiavellianism and psychopathy) in one person and at the same time, the understanding of these traits are important in the study of leadership because sometimes leaders (like homelander) can develop these over time

I empathize with this character primarily because I understand how his childhood is his inciting incident and I completely get, especially as an actor, the need to be loved or liked. As an actor that’s what I’d attach to most of I was playing the character, that want and the fear that comes with it of no one loving you. The amount of dudes in this comment section relating to him because they too have “beliefs that will get them canceled” and tht “he is just like Patrick Bateman or the Joker” is fucking concerning

Homelander, the Joker and The Riddler from the recent Batman movie are similar in an almost peculiar way. They have drastically different goals, personalities and beliefs. However, the people that are fanatically drawn to them in-universe are a particular group of people with heavy overlap. And it creates a sort of real world empathy for them, despite as you said, not agreeing with them.
For the Riddler and it is shown for Homelander as well, they draw the outcast *TYPICALLY* white male, who may be that by design or happenstance. “Incels” for lack of a better term but there’s a shocking parallel that the Boys amazingly depicts. The “Incels” are sort of inextricably linked to this sort of alt-right belief system that even normal people like Todd, the stepfather, can get pulled into. It’s a consequence of *GENERALLY* white men feeling emasculated by society and having a figure to rally behind.
Whether it be Homelander the shining example of “manliness and the American way,” or Riddler who is anti-establishment and seeks to destroy the corrupted American way.
It’s a very interesting similarity that these characters bring up. And makes you take a look at the type of people who are drawn into those sorts of beliefs in real life and makes you feel bad in a sense for people who really just want to feel strong and part of a group. Unfortunately that vulnerable desire for acceptance and camaraderie often times diverges to being something harmful.
Long rant, but just some thoughts. Another awesome video. Thanks!

Plus, the problem with Thanos just...kind of an idiot. This makes him less relatable to an person with even an average intelligence.
He wants to create a balance in the universe, between resources and life that these resources are available to.
To do so, at first, he partakes in interplanetary genocides to halve the populations. Ok, I follow so far. Humans do that IRL too, with some animals, so that they don't overpopulate (f.e. boars).
Later however, seeing as that would take forever, he decides to collect Infinity Stones and do this everywhere, at once.
    But wait a minute...
Ifinity Stones are a relics of universal power. They hold almost unlimited might. They are connected to and can manipulate all aspects of universe: reality, times, space, minds and souls, or turn the worlds to ash, and when combined can achieve almost anything. Henceforth, infinite.
And all that Thanos can think of to do with with LITERAL INFINITE POWER at his fingertips, was to...just kill? Continue with his crude population control, that is ONLY EFFECTIVE if done regularly? I'm pretty sure even 5th grader could come up with more permanent or better solution, ethics aside.
Influence the number of resources, change the reproductive systems of various lifeforms, make lifeforms that require less inorganic/organic resources, increase the expansion rate of the universe etc. and this is just on top of my head.
And don't tell me he couldn't do that. He said he wanted to destroy whole universe (in Endgame) and create new one. That is WAY MORE complex then anything I suggested.
This just makes Thanos look lazy and dumb. Like he rides on his own motto, rather then actually caring about his cause, thus he is barely sympathetic.
This is why taking an idea from Thanos in comics, who was just misantropic psychopath and lovestruck genocider, into an murderous idealist is not a good idea.
Compare this to someone like God Emperor from Warhammer, who while certainly has many villanous traits and has done many evil deeds (and his legacy serves to do even way more), it never feels half assed or completely injustified. He simply does terrible things, because he lives in a dowright Lovecraftian universe, where almost everyone is enemy to humans and The Empire.
