SO SLOW HE LOST HIS LICENSE! The Story of Yuji Ide's Short F1 Career
ฝัง
- เผยแพร่เมื่อ 10 ก.ย. 2023
- Most drivers that come into F1 either do a one off because they're replacing a driver, like Liam Lawson or similar this year, or Hulkenberg during the 2020 season.
But it's rare for a driver to be signed up, do only four races, and then be kicked to the kerb. And on top of that, have their license taken away because they just were not cut out for it. Today, you have to earn points, often dubbed the 'Verstappen Rule' but you might have to think this had something to do with it too.
So what happened? Let's find out...
Enjoy! And remember to like and subscribe for more!

When there aren't enough pics of Ide's car so you use Sato's and hope no one notices...
I remember getting F1 06 w/o watching most of the real life season and thought “Who’s Ide?” (I didn’t realise it was pronounced ‘E-Day’ back then)
Basically still the same sh*box car😂😂
😆
🤫
Watching this while eating food, i did infact not notice it 🤣
I can't believe that Yuji Ide had a longer F1 career in my copy of F1 06 for the PS2 than he ever did in real life. He was the true goat!
Still one of the greatest f1 games ever made
@@Byronthegooner The only things I really missed: Exhibition races with the classic cars and drivers changing teams in career mode. But I still played it regularly until a few years ago. A true gem, especially for those who are passionate about F1! And it's great to see some F1 06 love!
@@towserfm if we could get a base game design similar to that with all the modern tweaks and graphical updates, . It would be amazing
@@Byronthegooner Absolutely! I do like what they do with the recent games, though. Have you tried them?
@@towserfm yes but sadly EA has not realy changed much for me over the last two versions I played. F1 2018 2020 21 and 22 and 21 22 are the same game really.. Just added tracks and other junk..
I can't say I've played F123. I actually still play motorsport manager lol and want to get into f1 Manger 23 think I will wait for 25 new regs before I invest in f1 game
I'm still on Xbox one and my pc is getting old waiting to purchas new Gen Xbox and Sim racing set up by next year
Ahhh Yuji Ide. The man that helped me get a podium at Magny Cours when he was my teammate on F1 Championship Edition by causing a huge pileup with the front runners. What a man he is!
Another thing to add, he blocked me on Twitter a few years back for calling him the GOAT of F1.
I won in Bahrain in my second season. I think that's the point where I realised your engine would never blow up.
@@michaelkitchin9665since I got a Shiite computer I have to play F1 06 on psp I got an engine failure in quali in super aguri
And the legend himself, Taki Inoue, apparently got mad because Ide took his title of the worst f1 driver ever.
Inoue has mastered the art of self depreciation and being able to laugh at yourself
@@AidanMillward Also the worst Japanese F1 driver
@@imrpovking845 No Ide was worse. And I'm not just saying that to make Taki miffed.
As a swiss .. i'm quite pissed at the fact no one is mentioning our national legend Jean Denis Delétraz !
@@Yuggoth87 hey at least he's not that bad in sportscar racing.
One of the few drivers in history to make Takuma Sato look responsible.
Takuma Sato also has two Indy 500s while Alonso has none.
@@AidanMillward And probably has racked up more money in crash damage than in winnings. He's the shining example of Hero or Zero.
Speaking of Indy Aidan, I propose u do a video covering all the drivers who fell one short of capturing the Triple Crown. Or a video covering Maurice Trintignant (for me the most underrated F1 driver ever, won Le Mans and twice at Monaco, also competed in 1st 15 F1 seasons!)
The giant fart cloud when his engine popped in Monaco was magnificent.
@@AidanMillwardand Alonso has two world championships when Sato has two….wins. Ever. (I love Taku, but I couldn’t help it)
There is also Al Pease who was disqualified from the 1969 Canadian GP for Driving too slowly. For the record he qualified 11 seconds outside the pole time
There is a bit of an asterix for Pease because although yes he was black flagged for going too slowly, he also had some serious mechanical issues in his 2 year old Eagle (that was never the most reliable car in the first place). Even though he was 11 seconds off pole, there were 3 cars that qualified behind him in the era where local racers would enter their home grands prix in whatever old cars they could get their hands on
All we are saying is give Pease a chance.
@@lancedryver7674 A shame that there's only such a small audience for such a great comment!
I always loved the old Orange Arrows livery. Ide was probably set up to fail due to lack of preparation, but given the history of bad drivers I'm sure there would be some competition.
It was a great livery. Possibly one of the most iconic of the 21st Century
It's crazy to think that Ide was 2nd in Formula Nippon, ahead of drivers like Andre Lotterer.
To think that Ide's F1 stint was so terrible it b*ttfucked his driving in his return in FN and the Suzuka 1000km race later that year. Had he not screwed up in that race the #23 Nissan Z33 he shared with regulars Satoshi Motoyama and Tsugio Matsuda could've had the chance to win the 1000kms and could have had the chance to win title in 2006.
Tosset was 2nd in his rookie season in F3000 too, or something like that
Some drivers don't "show up" when they finally get a shot at a top tier championship. Sometimes there is a reason, like machinery or injury. Other times, they just don't 'click'
I think that’s an anomaly honestly - he never achieved the same heights as 2003-2005. His form was awful in Formula Nippon afterwards.
@@falconberlina8488Formula Nippon/Super Formula has a history of producing weird ass results.
2:55 Larrousse folding took it to 26 drivers for 26 slots. Simtek folding took the field down to 24.
Beat me to it.
I actually read that article, the other 4 were: Inoue, Rosset, Pease and it was either Delatraz or Walker.
My first guess was that Tosser was on there, too. The others I wouldn't have guessed, so many at that tier just above Ide and Tosser.
@@d00dEEE I'm not sure if it was a different list, but I remember seeing Chanoch Nissany in one. He was 6.8 seconds slower than... Not the pole sitter... But his teammate! Then he threw the car into a gravel trap and his career was over.
This dude makes Taki Inoue look like the GOAT.
The Truss comparison has convinced me Ide wasn't so bad after all. I owe him an apology for underestimating him for the past 17 years. xD
And Truss owes us ALL one. Starting with the 30% back in our pensions.
She sure does! It's ...interesting... how the stronger a politician calls for unrestricted free markets, the less they understand how markets actually work.🙈
That's done so much damage to the economy & country in our lifetime. 😞
Ironic that a Honda team was owned by a guy named Suzuki. Kind of like when Kurt Busch drove the Miller Lite car.
To be fair, almost all japanese have Suzuki as surname
@@chombus2602and the rest have the surname Sato.
These stories are so good man🙌
Fun and informative video as always Aidan
Loving this content 👏
good, i love these videos. keep it up!
What about Lord Mahaveer who managed to get TWO bans in one season, (although he didn't serve the 2nd one due to a technicality)
He's sharp, he's cool, he rides on a mule, he's Albers the 5th Musketeer!
I've seen people ask why they chose 107%, and I think it's because the cut-off between 26th and 27th was usually in the 106.5-107.5% range. Breaching 107% would almost always give you a DNQ, but anything under would almost guarantee you a grid spot.
Nice burn on the Lettuce.
Btw: I’m glad you’re back on camera again. I know it’s sensitive, and it shouldn’t matter to us, but… to me at least, it does matter somehow. Glad to have you back
As Speed Channel in the US called Super Best Friends...
Nice video, i think that in fairness to Ide he was a victim of circumstance in that could not speak English and had next to no testing and delvlopment time, the fact that he has some pretty decent results in Japan shows that he is infact pretty good
I remember when super aguri joined I quite liked the idea of them having an all Japanese line up and already liked Sato so I was hoping that Ide was gonna be promising but spun more than a washing machine 😅
Always had a soft spot for Japanese drivers, I was a fan of Ukyo Katayama after all 😂
I have a video idea, the 2006 Bathurst 1000.
I know you did the 06 season, but that years Bathurst is a memorable one.
Also with the 60th anniversary of the Great Race, and the recent anniversary of Peter Brock's tragic death, I think it'd be a nice idea.
So that's what Jos ex wife and Martin Brundle have in common
Ooooof lol
Regarding super licences, wasn't Senna's also (temporarily) revoked some time after the 1989 Japanese GP? So, technically, Yuji Ide partly matched a three-time world champion.
I saw that joke about Liz Truss coming, but still couldn't help but laugh, though it also reminds me of Brian Clough with his legendarily disastrous 40 days in charge at Elland Road, taking over from the legend that was Don Revie so he could go manage England! Difference is, Clough was seen as the best man for the job with how he'd pulled Derby County up from nothing in the then Division Three to the old Top Flight of Division One! (This was long before the Premier League and even longer before the Championship!)
"The other is Yuji Ide'. My god that elicited the most undignified snorting laugh from me
MY HERO. PERIOD.
Off the top of my head, Ide is alongside De Cesaris, Young (Yong? Arrows guy), Mazepin, Deletraz and that guy who raced in Canada in the 60s and was lapped about 30 times.
Al Pease. He had Dan Gurney's '66 Eagle-Climax.
About Villeneuve in Japan 97; he raced under appeal and finished 5th after Ferrari outsmarted Williams, arguably JV's head wasn't in it. After the race, Williams dropped the appeal and Villeneuve was disqualified. Had JV been allowed to keep his points from Suzuka, Michael hitting him in the wrong place at Jerez wouldn't have happened, since Michael needed to finish ahead of JV. Maybe JV would have overshot the corner instead, who knows. Williams probably dropped the appeal out of fear for missing the last race. Ironically, speeding under yellow flags will only get you a three place grid drop nowadays. It's a good thing penalties aren't as harsh anymore. I remember Ralf getting a stop and go for crossing the pit lane exit line!
"speeding under yellow flags will only get you a three place grid drop nowadays."
Or death.
Too soon?
Mastercard ruined Lola. Lola always had potential to be a solid F1 team but Mastercard forced them in a season too early and their reputation was in tatters
The man, the myth & the legend, Yuji Ide
11:57 Ah Takeshi's Castle 😍What a gameshow that was
The others from that F1 Racing article were Al Pease, Otto Stupacher, Taki Inoue, and Giovanni Lavaggi.
i’m surprised they didn’t put a Jean Denis Delétraz on that list, had a higher average speed in the lane in 1994, Portugal 1995 he was 12 seconds off pole and then pulled out after 14 laps because he wasn’t fit enough, the next race, he got down to a more respectable 9 seconds off pole
you should do Hans Heyer he is a german who was disqualified (for going to slow) and still ended up racing
The true F1 goat
Ah Ricardo Rosset. I'd forgotten how bad he was. Now I remember........
Ide was a prime student of the Al Pease School of Racing. Al, a.k.a. 'Old Molasses,' is all the other four drivers on the Top Five Slowest list.
At this point, Karthikeyan, being the fastest cucumber he is, look many times more faster than this guy
Yuji Ide: the true Captain Slow.
Nice James Bond reference!
2:30 onwards is like a plug for the early days of Storytime.
Super Best Friends! I really miss them.
I always laughed when Steve Machet and David Hobbs called them that
As a follow on to that vid, and to follow onto the current batch of US teams/drivers talks joining F1, it would be interesting to find out how many (if any) drivers have been refused a super licence by the FIA after meeting/almost the criteria points? I.e. Colton Herta last, a year or 2 I think.
Sebastien Loeb.
If SEBASTIEN LOEB couldn’t get one, I dunno what’s going on on Herta’s head if he thinks he’s getting one.
@@AidanMillward the fact that Loeb couldn't get one suggests the criteria need revision.
THE TAKESHI'S CASTLE REFERENCE, I LOST IT.
Anytime I read old endurance or touring results I've always found names at the top that made me think "wait, didnt this guy suck?" because I've only known them from being in a back of the grid team in F1, the preparation and style adjustment required certainly isn't for everyone, as well as having sponsors rich enough to secure you a spot on a team that does not have a leafblower for an engine. I think you've done a video on this, but if you didht...
Realising this also applies in team form to Zakspeed, for whom Suzuki raced, a team with several titles in touring and endurance but you'd never guess it looking at their F1 exploits.
I'm not joking. I catch your videos at different points, from a few hours to a day and it has somehow around 675 likes.
11:50 "I love Japan... everything is "super" something"
Well... everything except for Yuji Ide's racing licence, you mean
Ricardo Rosset's surname is actually pronounced "Tosser"
Fun fact about the (terrible) Brabham BT60B. It’s the last car to participate in a Pre-Qualifying session, the last one with a woman driver, and the last car in a Single Car Team, Brabham briefly reverted to one briefly in their death throes.
Super IDE-SAN!
Really? you mean Mr. "No attack, no chance" was crash happy BEFORE he came to Indycar?? shocking!
You should organize some sort of takeshies castle watch along stream :D
That pm has spent longer writing their book than they were in office
A lettuce lasted longer.
that's Sato's car - Yuji Ide was in the #23
:P
I will say The liz truss joke was proper funny.
And i'm an american
I thought Lola didn't actually show up in Melbourne... Shame as aside from it being close to a B195 clone it was actually not a bad lookingcar.
Hello there, can you make a video of the failed Brabham BT55 please? I'm really fascinated by it's design philosophy. Too bad it flopped, marking the end of Brabham and BMW's glory days, spelling the collapse of Brabham.
Easy one word answer for that
Bernie.
@@privateinformation2960 Indeed
13:00 *laughs in Jim Clark*.
Hello Aidan: You are right about Japan and "super". The long distance, high speed trains are called "super express", in English. The Japanese name is pronounced as Shinkansen which has different meaning. Stay well and safe.
Been on one of those OG bullet trains at the national railway museum in York. So cool.
Hmm... there have been the likes of Philippe Adams, Giovanni Lavaggi, Jean-Denis Deletraz, Taki Inoue... definitely F1 Hall of Shame candidates, in my book.
I will have you know that Yuji Ide finished higher in the standings that year than his two replacements, Franck Montagny and Sakon Yamamoto by recording a higher finish than either😜.
I always laugh when people say Hispania/HRT were too slow….same people never saw Lola trying to qualify in 97
Lola were taken out of the F1 1997 game as well.
14:15 Coloni and LIFE too
0:58 Schumacher should've had 2 more race bans for TWICE ramming his nearest rival off the race track, just so he could win the world championship.
do Alex Yoong next! Remember him ?? 😂
11:11 sick burn hahahaha
Friendly reminder that this is the same Ide who earlier in his career finished...on the podium...at the Macau Grand Prix...Let that sink in.....
One recent driver that was on the verge of a race ban was Pierre Gasly, He had a bunch of incidents and collected alot of incident points and was basically warned to cut it out.
11:58 - Assuming Ide had got as much (or more) testing than Sato, I still think he would have been the worst driver that year. The Super Aguri was just painfully slow. Sato, for all his F1 experience struggled to challenge even the Midlands rookies. He would have been the equivalent of someone like Mazepin in 2021. Slower than Mick and no one close to either of them to give a fair comparison. I could still see Suzuki dropping him at the end of the year for a (then untrialled) younger Yamamoto, or eventual signing Anthony Davidson.
My worst 5:-
Ide
Walker (entire season as no 2 to world champ, never scored a point)
Al Pease(lapped about 20 times in first 40 laps)
Rossett (no explanation needed)
Luca Badoer ( no business here but the only time a works Ferrari qualified last)
Ridged tyres WTF were they thinking i hated that rule set.
Fun fact - Ide scored as many podiums as Hulkenberg.
14:15 in GP2? If he scored 4ths and 5ths in 4th to 6th best car he'd be considered an amazing driver. He also has as many F1 wins as Johansson, Amon, Brundle, Cheever and Brundle.
I'll second the offer to watch Takeshis Castle!
That 1994 Hockenheim race was a classic, I think 6 cars didn't get past T1 thanks to Häkkinen. :D Half the cars retired and Jos Verstappen almost got deepfried.
Think it was something stupid that ten cars didn’t finish the first lap.
Can you redo the Inoue video please?
Nowadays he probably wouldn't have even qualified for a super license!!!!
I miss having naff teams on the grid. :( I really hope we get back to 26 car grips one day with a few really crap teams... because nothing is better in F1 than a really rubbish car getting a point.
Wasn't it Ricardo patrase who had the ban from the drivers union not the fia? IE they said he's dangerous if he's racing we're not.
It’s just been revoked 🤣
my takeaway from this video is that Yuji is the japanese version of Nigel Mansell.
Ide won his first Indy race with a hole in the back, was the only rookie to ever win the Indy championship and the only one to hold the Indy and F1 titles at the same time eh?
Interesting call.
some of you might've already know this but yuji ide's f1 career was his turning point for the worse in just 4 months:
after fia "forced to" sack ide from super aguri, ide went sabbatical before nismo called him to be one of nismo's 3rd driver for 2006 suzuka 1000 km in august, the biggest event for super gt at the time. yuji ide is going to drive for #23 xanavi nismo team. also driving for xanavi nismo was 2-time gt500 champion satoshi motoyama and future prospect tsugio matsuda in his 1st season with nissan after fruitless seasons driving for honda's nakajima racing
anyway, xanavi nismo started 7th and tsugio matsuda would be their starter driver. the start went incident-free. on lap 15, matsuda went up 1 spot after #25 eclipse advan supra spun at suzuka hairpin (t11). matsuda went another spot after #6 mobil 1 sc spun at spoon curve on lap 24. xanavi nismo went for pitstop on lap 28 for full pit stop (fuel, tyres and driver switch) to yuji ide. xanavi nismo rejoined at 8th.
on lap 30, ide hit a gt300 car (#55 dhg ford gt) coming into casino triangle (suzuka last chicane), sending the bonnet of #55 off the track. on lap 32, yuji dropped a place after being overtaken by #24 woodone advan z
yuji ide received drive-through penalty on lap 38 for his lap 30 incident that must be served in 3 laps. at this point, ide was 6th after pit cycles. the xanavi nismo team tried to brought him in at the end of lap 39 but ide kept driving. the team radioed ide to serve his penalty at the end of lap 40 but ide went on driving. even with pitboards from the team, flags from race officials and radio messages scrambling to bring ide to serve his penalty, ide went past the s/f straight as if the warnings didn't exist. with the team failed to serve penalty, the officials disqualified #23 xanavi nismo at lap 41 for failing to serve penalty within 3 laps. only after the black flag dropped did yuji ide drove his car to the pit to retire the car
after the suzuka incident, ide went to finish runner up at the next suzuka 1000 km driving for aguri suzuki's arta team. as a 3rd driver however, he's ineligible for the title arta won in 2007. ide's career hawever went downhill from there. like really, reolly down. ide racked 3 podiums (1 win, 2 runner ups) and some top 10 finishes over the next 14 years, driving on and off for various teams in gt500 and gt300 with little success
there's a super gt+ broadcast cut from 2006 in yt with yuji ide's dsq as the main focus. it's 11 and a half minutes long but you only need to watch the first 8 and a half minutes to watch the shitshow unfold
Super Saiyan
10:56 at least Yuji Ide didn't wipe thousands off my Private Pension .

Ah Yuji Ide - the man that makes Taki Inoue look good!
A word of note that Prost Peugeot was so bad that France's version of Spitting Image made this visual joke of a turtle getting sexually excited at the sight of a Prost model car. I'm not going to lie, I found it fucking hilarious!
And yet still managed a Monaco win.

11:55 Super Mario plus Super Smash Bros
A lot of people have probably never heard of David Kennedy or Tommy Byrne but if you put them in Ide's car, even at the age they were then rather than in their prime, they'd probably have done better than Ide.
He was certainly no Roberto Moreno.
Loving the political comedy bit near the end. 🤣
9:50 Those teeth, though.
Ide’s formula career is very long and very bad - he actually appeared in Japanese F3 way back in 1994. 0 points. He disappeared until 1997, when he came back. 0 points. 1998. 0 points. He goes to Formula Dream (think wings and slicks Formula Fords) He finally wins Japanese F3 in a top Mugen ride in 2000, 7 years after his initial debut. He finishes 5th in 2001. He came 7th in French F3 in 2002, 6th in Euro F3 cup the same year. He then went to Formula Nippon from 2003-2005. 7th, 3rd, 2nd, but then falls off a cliff, never winning or finishing on the podium again. He last appeared there in 2010. Very strange career.
I wonder if Al Pease was ranked among those 5 worst drivers. Although his "career" such as it was really only rates him an honorable mention.
