I can’t remember who said this of Du Pre but it always stuck with me…”what burns twice as bright burns half as long.” Such a talent. Wonderful that her music lives on.
My God, how the music just vibrates through her. You can almost see the expansion waves of music oozing through her body and coming out, as if she was possessed. And how she smiles, with the innocence of a child filled with joy. What a marvelous and beautiful human being.
To me the worst was that she had to stop playing and wait years before the disease took her. Kathleen Ferrier and Eva Cassidy were singing right to the end of their lives. Poor Jackie!
Just extraordinary... it feels as if the cello draws the music out of her, rather than her making music from the cello. There is something so very moving about the last minute of this clip - the joy, the exuberance - a glimpse into the sublime. Other musicians seem plodding and soulless by comparison. What a gift to the world.
Yes you are right about that "the cello draws the music out of her". In one of the documentaries on her by Nupen, Pinchas Zukerman talks about how it was her 'being' you could feel, not the cello. Having listened to her for a very long time it is very true and what makes her so special. As Toby Perlman said, "You can't compare her to anyone". The control she had over the instrument was fathomless, it was second nature to her, like tying a shoe or speaking a language for us, or perhaps first nature!?
"Other musicians seem plodding and soulless by comparison." Yes you are so correct. From when I was a youngster studying cello she was my ideal. She puts goosebumps down your neck. That is if you have a soul she does...
Kaitlyn Fa If with time you are able to internalise both the passion and the joy with which she approached her music you will become unstoppable. Others may look @ this & say, "you forgot the word 'discipline.'" Hardly. The kind of rare passion Jacqueline brought to her music - to her life - made adherence to discipline a natural conclusion. I wish you the best, Kaitlyn (-:
Too short. Way too short. It's fascinating to see how her whole body gets jolted by the music. Music gave her such joy. She's like a little girl playing with her favorite toy. So cute. My favorite clip of her.
To say she was gifted is an understatement. She was a genius when it came to playing music. What a great loss. I and my Daughter have M.S and we are fortunate enough to have a modern treatment that helps with the symptoms and slows the process of neurological damage. She was, unfortunately, living in a time where there was nothing to slow it down or stop it from destroying you and your life. God rest her soul.
Um cometa, um anjo que passou por nós...nunca vi ouvi nada tão profundamente terno como esta moça tocando. Inesquecível Jaqueline Du Pre, inesquecível...
I know... Her piano playing sounds really fresh and unique (to me), though I may be biased because I absolutely adore her and everything about her. She was really a beautiful, beautiful person.
All these comments are so wonderful about these people. That's when you know their work truly made a difference. Amazing how little you can find that in artists now a days unless you search hard enough.
This is testimony to love and youth. Imagine yourselves in love and at the summit of civilization in your creation. This is not a mere video of a performance, but a glimpse into the life of the gods, a glimpse into their love and relaxation. The moment harkens to the last time I fell in love, but beyond that point I am mute.
Barenboim, without doubt is a musician who will be talked of and admired for centuries to come. However, du Pre has that something extra. Music just pours out of her and as has been said of her many times by colleagues and critics, she seems to have been sent into the World ' ready made'. Unforgettable artist!
This is simply priceless! Witnessing the enchanting collaboration between Daniel Barenboim and Jacqueline du Pré was nothing short of a revelation. Their effortless synergy, oscillating between playful camaraderie and profound musical dialogue, transported me to realms of pure musical bliss. As Du Pré began her mesmerising performance on the cello, and Barenboim's mastery graced the piano, it felt as though time stood still, enveloped by the sheer magic of their performance. Words falter in attempting to encapsulate the depth of emotion stirred by their artistry, and chemistry, of course! What a captivating duo! A true testament to the timeless beauty of classical music. Watching this extraordinary video is an experience I shall cherish forever. Love you all, dear lovers of music :)
Magnifique !
I have recently discovered Jacqueline......what an absolute talent. I specifically enjoy the passion she shows in her performances...exuberance I suppose. I envy the people who got to know her. She seems like a whole lot of fun. Oh for an ounce......
Life is short some of us get it right from the start. Like an angel she shows us who pay attention. That most are not worthy she invites us along on her short ride. Two Chellos brothers are another one we need to check out!
I know what you are saying. We are none of us perfect. It is not easy being a young man married to someone with a terminal illness. No one is all good or all bad. I just think that Danny does do an awful lot of good now, and his heart is certainly in the right place.
Informal describes her to a 'T'. So sad that she has left us, but sooooooo good that we have clever people who can upload these treasures for our enjoyment, Well done everybody and thank you FlashHarry621.
Danny was so much more exciting then. He is still a great one. Love the way he carried the Olympic Flag at the opening of 2012. A well deserved honour.
Jaqueline doing dramatic hair flips like she's better than everyone else. I'm not criticizing. She is better than everyone else. Rest in Peace, we love you.
When Jacqueline was ill towards the end of her hife she was not the same person and he was also in another phase. Life is constantly changing. I'm sure he didn't stop loving her but his life was in different phase. A person can love more than one person ,although we mostly live with one partner. Nobody can judge him. I'm sure he didn't neglect her.. But his life continued.
She would have been 67 today, 26 January 2012. Playing - somewhere still playing. I can hear you in the rain A never-ending inspiration A whisper in the corn - still playing.
@cellocraze There is a recording of her playing the first movement. Go to the Jacqueline du Pre website and there is a link there where you can listen.Jackie lives forever!
I´m a little bit ignorant, so I´m begging to the kind people who watch this video to tell me what pieces were played here by Jacqueline on the piano and cello. Thank you very much.
Gustavo Weckesser Oh it´s Kuhlau: Sonatine No.1 in C-Dur Op.20-1 !!! And the first piano piece is J. Haydn - Divertimento in C - 2 Hob.XIV:4 Menuet-Trio!!! Thanks also to organum1000 and MoseMendelssohn !!!
I am not that familiar with her, but just watched the Abbey Road documentary in which she was featured, and have been binge watching all of her youtube videos. There is something really dangerous about her playing and mannerisms (and i mean that in a good way). Damn!! Now i Have just discovered there was a movie made about her. Well I will have to watch that now. its gonna be a late night!!
There is a story that Rostropovich was asked why he never played the Elgar concerto. He replied, "What for ... Jacqueline du Pré has played it."
yessss, omg she is ....
I can’t remember who said this of Du Pre but it always stuck with me…”what burns twice as bright burns half as long.” Such a talent. Wonderful that her music lives on.
That’s profound and it fits well for Ezio Bosso as well!

Then who I love is
This woman is made of music. She breathes music. She explodes with music. This clip is a jewel.
@Valerie O'Brien Did you finally rebelled at all that ?
Totally agree
My God, how the music just vibrates through her. You can almost see the expansion waves of music oozing through her body and coming out, as if she was possessed. And how she smiles, with the innocence of a child filled with joy. What a marvelous and beautiful human being.
She was so unique in every way. Her soul resonated with every note.
Watching her is so charming, and knowing what comes next, so sad.
so utterly tragic. how little could be done for her then. i wonder what today's medical care could do.
Khalid al-Masri
To me the worst was that she had to stop playing and wait years before the disease took her. Kathleen Ferrier and Eva Cassidy were singing right to the end of their lives. Poor Jackie!
The World's greatest cellist playing piano better than many soloists I've heard.
True
Key point is "you've heard". Well, it's your ears. Only you can control them and the brain behind them.
Her memory is amazing
Well, you can count them on one hand, is it?
Her mother was a concert pianist
So beautiful, so brilliant, so tragic, so unfair.
I watched a documentary recently and lm sure she said she was lazy and found it hard to motivate herself to practice, really?Gifted.

Gorgeous words! Are you a writer?
Unbelievable. She’d have the composers in tears
She had the brightest smile I have ever seen
She played with such joy and power! Omg! The world will forever miss Jacqueline Du Pre! Gone before she was in her prime! Sad

A heartthrob. We could have had her for a few more years, if only! Still love Barenboim.
Those hair flips are just as vicious as her playing... i love her so much
The unbelivable beauty and sadness.
This woman was absolutely a genius. Most people cannot comprehend that
