Who needs words when you can hear this heartfelt, dramatic and intense version of this Mendelssohn piece played the late great Jacqueline du Pré Her intensity when playing it is mesmerizing to watch. How I wish I had known of her years ago and could have seen her play, but at least we have videos and recordings by her to compensate. I have also read bios on her and watched two DVDs by Christopher Nupen which are excellent ways to appreciate her genius as a cellist of the highest order. RIP Smiler
Exquisite! What a voice she gave the world to master the cello at so young an age. My favorite cello of them all. She lives on in these glorious recordings.
watch and listen to this play any day and it automatically becomes the highpoint of that day. Otherworldly beautiful. Possessed by the music the instrument isn't a tool anymore it's a messenger.
Definitely magnificent! 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 So delicate and romantic! ❤ For sure she was the best cellist in her young generation! 💯 What a loss for the world of music! ❤
There are many more POLISHED performances out there BUT, surely none more affecting than this. Thankyou to baroquevoice for this very special musical moment.
I wouldn't compare the two artists just because both are women. Jacqueline Du Pre as a musician was a phenomenon that appears in the world once in 500 years, I think.
500 years from 1520 to 2020 the only talent Du Pre? Du Pre better than J.S.Bach Mozart Beethoven?? Without the composers like Elgar(cello concerto) and Dvorak(cello concerto) there is no Du Pre
@@Nogah100 you must not be a pianist, or perhaps not a serious one---for those of us that are (and I am a professional violinist and pianist), Argerich is atleast her equal and likely her superior as a musician. She is tied with Horowitz in my personal book, and I am certainly not the know one who feels this way. What is certain is that both are absolutely unique and fascinating, but it is my opinion that the world did not fully experience nor realize Dupre's greatness because she was taken too soon. One can only dream about what it would have been like to hear the two together.
This shows an emotional maturity and intensity that would be surprising in someone of 50. For me this shows her at her peak of musicianship in all ways. Thank you baroquevoice
I’ve been practicing this song for a little over a year now and whenever I hit a roadblock on improvement I always come back here to listen to her play. It’s absolutely incredible
The great cellist Mstislav Rostropovich said, upon hearing Jacqueline du Pré play, that she is the only member of her generation who may not only become my equal but may some day surpass me. Multiple Sclerosis robbed the world of that possibility.
I don't think anybody could surpass what Rostropovich did for us cellists, because of him we have wonderful works from the most significant composers of 20th century. Nobody could do that but him, with his enormous energy and charisma. Jacqueline was a unique talent, her Dvorak/Schumann recordings can compare of those of Rostopovich's, but her Elgar concerto recording is her real legacy.
M.Rastropovich overestimated himself-he was inferior cellist to compare with J.Du Pre. Trying to be multifacet musician his cello playing lost quality and conducting, piano accompaniment never left high achievment
Hermosa niña interpretando Mendelssohn con el instrumento que la haría tan famosa, sin saber el destino tan cruel e injusto que le aguardaba. Jacqui, siempre te tengo en mi mente.
Jacqueline du Pré. F. Mendelsshon - Song without Words Op. 109 wmv. EL TALENTO DE JACQUELINE, TRADUCIDO EN SENSIBILIDAD!! GRACIAS JACQUELINE!!! ESTAS EN EL CIELO!!
I believe she was only 16 when she recorded this and I think the lady on piano may be Jacqueline's Mother. Can anyone confirm? In my opinion she was the world's greatest living cellist before her sad passing. Robert Cowley - Melbourne Classical Music Radio Presenter
Wonderful to see Jackie long before she met Creep-a-Zoid of the Century Daniel Barenboim. Still in her salad days, with Tiger Mom on the piano. Well, we've all got to start somewhere...RIP
Please don’t judge Barenboim. There may have been other martial issues. He never abandoned her, he had to have a life. Perhaps without the MS they would have parted. We don’t know.
She was sent here to make our lives more beautiful. One day God realized that one of his most beautiful creations was missing in heaven, and he became sad and finally decided it was time for his angel to return. Then this creature spread its wings like a large butterfly and flew and flew until it returned to where it belonged. Jackie was not made for this world. She just sneaked out to play for a while. Now she's up in the sky, beyond the clouds, playing the most wonderful music with her cello, made of light and stars.
This is shown to my students. Passion without over emoting, she is a conduit for the sublime.
BRAVO well said
she is the best cellist, no doubt, it's interpretation is magical. Rest in peace madame du Pré
I know I am nitpicking now... But she was Miss du Pré, and, later, Mrs Barenboim. She was English, born and bred, her father from Guernsey.

@@livb6945 So what?
I honestly don’t think it matters, as long as you can tell who she is😅 Rest in peace 😢
YES Bravo - what is more amazing, almost 40 years since she died, I believe she is still rated Nr 4 or 5 best Cellists of all time -

Okay I cried a bit. Don't judge...her renditions make me emotional. Rest in peace.
I can't listen to her Elgar without becoming a sobbing wreck!! - genius and sadness and beauty- phenomenal
R.I.P, Jackie.
Lucky of you Jessica😊
She plays with such passion; it's truly breathtaking.
She is one of the best cellist ever!! It is very good video for cello students!
Bella interpretacion. Una conjuncion perfecta de instrumentista e instrumento. Tecnica y sensibilidad. Magnifica!.
Absolutely beautiful piece of music.
Tellement sensible, naturel, touchant...

Yes, both Martha and Jacqueline in my opinion, were Grand Masters of Piano and Cello

I think Rostropovich mostly meant the Elgar concerto, as he took it away from his own programme after hearing du Pre playing
M.Rastropovich overestimated himself-he was inferior cellist to compare with J.Du Pre. Trying to be multifacet musician his cello playing lost quality and conducting, piano accompaniment never left high achievment
His "equal"? He never equaled this phenomenal, one-time genius.
Everyone’s entitled to their own opinion imo but Rostropovich was as good a cellist as Du Pre דליה אפרת
it is quite heartbreaking to know that she no longer is with us, but her spirit is very much alive, one wonders, one grieves, one sighs and carries on
May I call you "Mister Teeth"?

She gave it all to her audience but she forgot about herself. Beautiful performance!
