I remember the launch of Sentry came with a built-in rumor campaign that he was the lost post-Atlas, pre-Fantastic Four creation of Stan Lee and another artist (not Ditko or Kirby). It was the comics equivalent of Capitol Records hinting that Klaatu’s debut album in the 1970s might actually be The Beatles (they couldn’t say!).

I personally really liked his showing in World War Hulk, afraid to step in until he was absolutely certain it was the best thing to do, that no matter how much he let loose, the damage would be less than what the Hulk would do, and in fighting the Hulk, he could use his full strength.
@@unfortunateimperial6019 plus it doesn't overuse the whole "void spit personality" thing, it takes him in a new direction while still connecting to his original arc, a man who's terrified of what he can do when he lets loose so he chooses to completely remove himself from the equation.

The Issue #4 cover looks like how people are portrayed in the character select menu of versus mode in the video game "Marvel Nemisis: Rise Of The Imperfects". Like its uncanny, even down to the whites of the eyes. It also looks like that one NWA album cover.
Seems to me that this circle of heroes is witnessing Sentry in an embryonic state. Rebirth, right? Both of this hero and their collective memory of him. . .
1. Yes, Sentry is Superman on drugs, but virtually every drug know and unknown, imagined and yet to be imagined. While I don't doubt that the could wrap Supes in his own cape and send him back to Krypton (yeah, he's that powerful), he is distinct enough that I, as a massive DC fan, see him as completely different. 2. Long haired Sentry. If you're going to warp reality, start with the rules; cut your hair if you feel like, don't cut it if you don't. NOT cutting it shows you're making the rules. 3. No favorite retcon, sorry. MAYBE the Sentry's, because it was so well done, but I'm not usually a fan of them. Oh, and FANTASTIC video, and a very adorable host for the vid. Thanks, and keep 'em coming, please!!
I agree. Every time I think about how terrible retcons are, and how they cheapen the character I think "Well, what about Alan Moore's "Swamp Thing." That's totally a retcon, but it makes the character *more* interesting."
Dear Sasha! The unsettling aspect of the Cover for issue #4 is coz it references the Basilisk. I very much respect your well presented analysis. love Steve Holliday

Well recently the Sentry and the Void made peace and merged into a fully coheisive being in his last mini-series so who knows they might yet get it right with this guy ! Annd this might be a tadd of topic but my goodness you are lovely !
10:45 i think its referencing Miracle Man {Alan Moore version}. his story is a little similar in terms of forgetting he was a superhero and living a bland life constantly having dreams of his superhero days etc.
Old guyz like me dont usually keep up with the comic hero publications...i follow the artist i most enjoyed these days..but i really love what you do ..obviously you love the media as i do ... now i know qll i need to about The Sentry !.. seems worthy of a follow up visit .
I have to agree that the Sentry has never been better than he was in this mini-series. It can be really hard to write a compelling story about a hero with deep seated mental issues while they retain their heroic nature (see Knight, Moon). Unfortunately, The Sentry has yet to find that author. Btw, another retcon hero you may like is Adam Brashear, the Blue Marvel. I really love that story and how it tackles race in comics.
the fact that the sentry and moon knight are both seen a marvel version of superman and batman respectively and also both have split identities is such a weird coincidence and I'm surprised marvel hasn't done a team up between them. I think WWH comes close. It doesn't use the void trope but still carries over that same message but with agloraphobia instead, a man so terrified of his potential for destruction he removes himself from the equation entirely, only joining in when it becomes clear that he's the only one able to stop the hulk.
Late to the party here. So, hi. Anyway, the cover you were looking for inspiration on reminds me of Action Comics 687 which was the Superman Reborn arc. It's a little different but I got that vibe. As to the death of Superman panel, I don't think it was meant to be a parallel of Superman so much as being shorthand for "his death was THIS IMPACTFUL". Like, showing he died like Supes implies that the mourning and aftershocks were similar as well.
I remember learning about The Sentry when I was learning about the Dark Avengers. At first, I was focused on Norman Osborn being the Iron Patriot, Scorpion being Venom (and that Avenger’s Spidey), and Ares the literal God of War being there that I just barely acknowledged the Sentry. But after hearing about his dark side, The Void, I become more interested in him and now I really want to see him in his own solo movie, not just The Thunderbolts movie that he’s rumored to be in.
LOVE this woman!!!!! Thank you Sasha for once again providing awesome analysis of this character, and his "first" appearance. You should go to the mirror and give your script writer a BIG smile, she earned it. Yes the Sentry is similar to Superman, but only in superficial ways, sadly he isn't written to focus on his "genie out of the bottle" aspect. You know, when he appears, the subsequent arrival of the Void should be an ominous "cloud" over whatever nick-nack conflict the other heros have called him,(Sentry) for. Long vs short hair???? It's all the same, he even looks the same with that mask, they should change his hairstyle for every appearance, that could highlight his inconsistent mental stability,......you just know, he IS the Void, like the professor X evil that he represses, that becomes Onslaught, you know the villain of that X-Men Micronaughts miniseries. PEACE dear sister, Merry Christmas to you and your AWESOME family.
Casual Comics is my new go to for all things comix! Dry wit, an eye for detail, and an adorable lisp: what's not to like? I also endorse Comictropes to anyone who loves comics analysis. And if you want to enliven your day with absolutely ludicrous clips of vintage 60s superhero cartoons, Tedfufu's channel is a must!
I like to call him "Captain Retcon." Reed kinda reminds me of Rick Sanchez evil. Like, he's sometimes evil, we justify it, and we all just love him because of the moments he shines. He operates in that moral quagmire that Yellowjacket and Wasp does. I love Jan and Hank, but damn, doesn't that whole story kinda taint years of continuity before and after that moment? Reed has those moments of what he would probably call "moral ambiguity." But then he goes and saves the entire universe, monologuing how he loves his family, and all is forgiven. As for the art of his origin, it is so sad that parts of it don't work because the moments where Jae Lee nails it are truly breathtaking. It takes a lot for a person to step outside traditional esthetic bombast and do a style so much his own. Even his early stuff in Namor was flawed but interesting. His style IMO worked better on his Inhumans run or any of The Dark Tower books. For Sentry, I think his deep blacks work really well with the ominous feeling of The Void. Some panels are so black it feels oppressive. Paul Jenkins is just an amazing talented writer when it comes to character driven stories. He turns superheroes into real people pieces. I loved his work on Hulk with Ron Garney, and again, Inhumans is near perfect to me. While I like the continued appearances of Sentry more than you do, I do feel in a lot of ways his first story will always be his best story. You can't put the genie back in the bottle.
Great video❣ Blue Marvel and Gladiator are my fave Kal-esque Marvel heroes. Sentry is a very interesting character for sure. I always felt that Sentry had the same kind of deal as the DC character Triumph. Im not going to get into the whole who copies who thing but there are very notable similarities. I will say that Sentry proved to be a more fleshed out version of the "Forgotten Hero with Problems".
The white eyes is a trope usage showing mind possession which is why they use several heroes who don't use masks. The embryo position of the Sentry I think is meant to imply its the heroes remembering what they've been forced to forget
Hey Sasha, just want to say u got all the makings for a blow up. Keep it up, mix it up, eventually u will strike a nerve, go viral, blow up. Happy holidays!
Blue Marvel favorite retcon, very interesting character in several levels... Sentry seems that much more hardest to write for for them.. similar problem they had with Hulk but corrected
The angles in that cover was used for poster art to the early Wes Craven film Last House on the Left. I'm sure Craven lifted the idea from something he came across.
This made me think of the twelve issue series The Lost Generation. Because of the seven year rule, the Fantastic Four first appeared in 2013. In 1990, they had debuted in 1983. So Marvel shoved a team of heroes into the gap. I wonder if this is still considered part of continuity. And speaking of John Byrne, what about his Spider-Man reboot. I always thought it was hilarious that Peter was caught in a huge explosion, but he remembered getting bit by a spider, and that's where he got his powers from.
Nahh. Dark Seed Sentry story was amazing. Especially the Trinity one. When all 3 personas eventually become one. When Sentry 1 shot thor I nearly lost it. Especially when he split his face in 2.
While I know the stand-alone run was iconic, and there were... missteps bringing him back, I do like characters like him and Hyperion being in the Marvel universe. I can only hope that someday he gets a rendition as incredible and satisfying as Hickman's run with Hyperion.
The Sentry in itself is self poetic, but needless to say I kinda saw this coming, him having sketchy memory as he notices the second coming, his gold eyes appearing as he reminds other heroes, reeds reaction, as well as his costume materialising and memory recovering in respect to the heroes call. I'd like to think the quick witted viewers probably found this out before me or I'm just slow on the uptake. either way I won't spoil the fun, truly a good find.

Thanks, and keep 'em coming, please!!
awesome video! My favorite retcon was Swamp Thing finding out he wasn't actually Alec Holland
I very much respect your well presented analysis.
love
Steve Holliday
I subscribed because it's great to see comics reviewed and explained by someone who actually likes comics.
Also there’s a whole feel of Supreme in your description
I recently began watching your videos. At first I wasn't too sure if I was going to like them, but by the end of the first one you had won me over. Because you speak intelligently and passionately and knowledgeably about one of my favorite subjects in a way that seems like just friends hanging out and shooting the shiz. I subscribed today after Senegal more vids. Glad I stuck with you, keep up the good work!
Oooo I think this is one for me. Also want to read the Astro City ones you talk about. Love your content, Sasha! Thanks!
Narration, voice, humor, timing, editing ... all spot on. Love it. Subscribing and waiting for the 500k party :-)
Well recently the Sentry and the Void made peace and merged into a fully coheisive being in his last mini-series so who knows they might yet get it right with this guy ! Annd this might be a tadd of topic but my goodness you are lovely !
I can't believe it but in one video you have me liking the Sentry. Never did, never thought I would but here we are.
Nice breakdown. Also appreciate the voices.
10:18 "Science is just magic we don't understand yet!"
I'm totally going to use that in my D&D games! Great way for an Artificer to flip that script!
I do think that Knul ripping him in half was a very good way to show just how screwed everyone was.
I knew the twist before watching this vid and even this video got me into it. well written
DC did a somewhat similar Charater In 1994 called Triumph but Marvel did the forgotten hero trope a lot more intricately with sentry
Great job on this, Sasha. Short hair Sentry is my personal favorite. 👍👍👍
I’m def going to have to read this one! The twist feels very appealing, and I like the second person narrative (and the long hair)
Coincidentally, TH-cam told me I had watched this video but I didn't remember. As I watched, it slowly came back to me!
Love all of your content and I appreciate you covering my fave character next to Franklin Richards. Keep up the amazing work!
@Casually Comics I admire the way you talk & I enjoy listening! ♥
Ahh my favorite Marvel character who gets no love :( Sentry movie when?
I like it when you do the voices it's so funny!
I like to call him "Captain Retcon."
Reed kinda reminds me of Rick Sanchez evil.
You can't put the genie back in the bottle.
really enjoying your channel and comments
Great video❣ Blue Marvel and Gladiator are my fave Kal-esque Marvel heroes. Sentry is a very interesting character for sure. I like the music in the background after the quarantine is lifted I'm headed to Club Sasha for a night of dancing but if you can't pass through a Krakoan gate you can't get in it's very exclusive! 😁 💥🧠🔥⚡❄🌪⚛
Another great video thank you
The algorithm sent me to this channel with this Goddess and now I can’t stop watching her videos
Such a cool way to reread this story 😁👍🏼 just earned a sub
Hey Sasha, just want to say u got all the makings for a blow up. Keep it up, mix it up, eventually u will strike a nerve, go viral, blow up. Happy holidays!
You just got a new fan, love the way you tell this story. good work!
Blue Marvel favorite retcon, very interesting character in several levels... Sentry seems that much more hardest to write for for them.. similar problem they had with Hulk but corrected
20:58 capitain hairy belly. This sounds like the plot of they live, but backwards, have to say, the melting dog is really cool.
13:12 It looks like Venus Lighthouse from the Golden Sun JRPG video game series!
I watched about half of this...then realized I NEEDED to read this book and ordered it for delivery.
The angles in that cover was used for poster art to the early Wes Craven film Last House on the Left. I'm sure Craven lifted the idea from something he came across.
I 100% agree about the cover of issue #5.
"Embrace people with different skillsets." Spiderman needs to break up a technomagicbabble argument with that.
Very interesting. Tell me, have you heard of Big Bang's "The Knight Watchman"?
This made me think of the twelve issue series The Lost Generation. Because of the seven year rule, the Fantastic Four first appeared in 2013. In 1990, they had debuted in 1983. So Marvel shoved a team of heroes into the gap. I wonder if this is still considered part of continuity. And speaking of John Byrne, what about his Spider-Man reboot. I always thought it was hilarious that Peter was caught in a huge explosion, but he remembered getting bit by a spider, and that's where he got his powers from.
This was very interesting I didn't even I now this character existed.
Have you been to a wedding lately and do you remember a unicorn?
Favorite recon. Wolverine as the Phoenix directing the Celestial outside of time and space.
I agree that this should have been the first and last sentry story.
Nahh. Dark Seed Sentry story was amazing. Especially the Trinity one. When all 3 personas eventually become one. When Sentry 1 shot thor I nearly lost it. Especially when he split his face in 2.
This video was so cool, keep it groovy
Just found your channel and I love it! Awesome job and cool to see a black woman in the comic space on youtube.
Maybe issue 4's cover is a reference to the boys
A reference to a comic published 6 years later? Seems unlikely.
@@Rei-Rei that's fair, when this video came out I had boys on the mind because of the Amazon adaptation
Weirdly I always thought Hyperion was the Superman analog.
10:42 Issue four's cover is referencing N.W.A's Straight Outta Compton album cover.
