    This was the exact issue I was having. I started doing some research today on how to fix it after seeing the cost of a new motor. I had just read in a RV forum where someone stated that the motor stops when the power draw gets high. If the steps are well lubricated, the motor won't stop until the steps are fully retracted. Your video confirmed what I read as well as pointing out all the pivot points to lube. Thank you for putting this together.

    I just bought a used RV and when I asked the previous owner about the steps not going all the way in when you close the door, he said it's been that way and he just drives with the steps halfway out. I'm going to lube it up really good and see what happens. I want to thank-you very much for giving me a course of action!!!

      I bet a little lube will make all the difference.

      @@hillbillyrv I really hope so because I’ve never driven a 42 ft diesel pusher and the last thing I need is the steps out.

    Great tip - very easy to make happen. I also have a step cover inside my motor home that is now working - I'm going to try this on that as well. I believe the steps and step cover both get a lot of dust which is part of the issue. Do you worry about the lub caking up in high dust environments?

      Dirt can be a problem, but if you don't lubricate then the steps won't work at all.

    Ok I learned something here. I have Kwikee steps which I do keep lubricated. But I didn’t know about this amp draw thing. I’m on forums that have problems with steps and everybody assumes it’s a motor. I’m going to start pasting a reference to this video so they can watch this fix. Maybe you’ll get some new viewers as a result. Thanks Kenny.

    Crown Penetrating Oil - "It'll put a pep in your step!" So will Crown Royal, but that's a totally different application! Lol

    I'm replacing my second step. Again, I talked to Lippert just to be clear on the part number and he told me something that is going around the internet that's not exactly right. It's thought by many that the controller is controlling the amps in the motor. Actually, the controller just reverses the motor to pull in or push out. According to Lippert and their tecs are pretty good....the motor is the control for the amps, totally different from what we see often. This seems to be an ongoing arguments on the groups as to which does what but according to Lippert, the motor takes care of its own control of amps. As for buying the motor, Lippert is usually top dollar and I didn't ask the price. However, Camping World, usually making a big profit off everything needed 420 bucks. Motors on line go for 30 to 45 bucks from lots of suppliers. Who runs the amp control? Take you pick of sides on this . Might be worth looking into. Good vid though

    My steps are stuck retracted and for the life of me I can't get them down to remove the motor. HELP

    • @hillbillyrv
      @hillbillyrv  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sorry no magic trick to get them down. If the motor is completely dead, then you will have to try to get the pin out of the linkage. It's not easy with the step being retracted.

    Got it! Well… sort of. I got it extending and retracting fully, but now it’s just acting stupid. It only goes in and out when I start or turn off the motor. And when I turn off the motor and the steps go out, it stays out for about a minute then it retracts again. :(
