"What is that? I'm scared to close my eyes, I'm scared to open them! We're gonna die out here!"
Fun Fact: The three leads believed the Blair Witch was a real legend during filming, though, of course, they knew the film was going to be fake.
Cost Saving Fact: One of the video cameras used by the actors was bought at Circuit City. After filming was completed, the producers returned the camera for a refund, making their budget money go even further.
Guerrilla Filmmaking Fact: The actors were requested to interview the townspeople, who often, unbeknownst to the actors, were planted by the directors. As a result, the expressions on the actors' faces were unrehearsed (See: Fun Fact). In a scene where the main actors are sleeping in a tent at night, the tent suddenly shakes violently and they all get scared. This was unscripted and the director shook the tent; the actors actually were scared. To promote discord between actors, the directors deliberately gave them less food each of the eight days of shooting. The directors kept in touch with actors via walkie-talkies, to ensure the three would not become lost during their trek. Reportedly, they got lost at least three times.

Love how the story comes full circle, in the interview in the beginning about how they’d lure the victims down into the basement and make one stand in the corner and face the wall and kill the other one. And that’s how it ends. It tells you in the beginning.

I saw this in the theatre in HS. The genius and why this was so special was the marketing behind it. There was no social media at the time. When this premiered, everyone thought this was real. There were no other found footage movies either so it was like nothing anyone had ever seen. They didn't even play trailers in the theatre - it just started, like you were really watching a real home movie. Not an empty seat in the theatre. Terrifying and def defined found footage. The actors also didn't have a script - directors just dropped instructions in the woods and told the scenario to "act it". They said a lot of the emotion and exhaustion was very real.

@evegriffin9771 it was and still is a fantastic film..I really don't understand some people's reaction when they say its a bad film or not scary..its haunting and as raw as you can get..with a sprinkle of supernatural to heighten the fear..this film did so so well what so many get wrong "less is more" they captured that perfectly..the actor's really sell it though..some of the most convincing performances to ever put to film.

    1. Take a gun
    2. Do not mess with random rock piles in the woods

What I especially loved about this movie was the lore behind the "Witch". There was a Sci Fi channel pseudo documentary that came out shortly after this film was released and it focuses on the lore and goes into how every few decades something horrible would happen in that town. The Witch was the first notable event, but the land was considered to be cursed long before the village itself was ever built. Native American guides refused to even go near those woods and warned against building anything there.
It was called "Curse of the Blair Witch" and you can still find it on-line to watch. I'd recommend watching it just because it's a nice, creepy little add-on for this movie. Plus, if you ever plan to see the 2nd film - which a lot of fans hate, but I personally loved. It's a very late 90s/early-early 2000s film, and it's a lot like Gremlins 2, except far less humorous in tone, and more subtle in its self-awareness - then you HAVE to watch it, because it contains actual interviews with Rustin Parr, the man whose house they ended up in at the end of the film - a house which shouldn't even be there as it was burned down after his trail....another thing about the lore is it goes into how the stick figures can be used to basically time travel and enter alternate dimensions, which pretty much explains both movies. The first one focuses on time travel while the second one is all about alternate realities and evil doppelgangers - and it's important to at least know what he looks like before watching the 2nd film.
The movie also had a book that came out shortly after its release which was presented like an actual true crime investigation into the case. They had journal entries from Heather and interviews that add a bit more to the first film.
I was a big horror fan already when this movie came out, and the amount of detail that's found within the external lore is what finally inspired me to begin my own career as a horror writer.
I only wish they'd come out with a box set that contained the book and The Curse of the Blair Witch mockumentary video, as far too many people just watching this movie today are really missing out on a lot of the story. It's especially necessary for the 2nd film.
I could spend hours writing about why the 2nd film is underappreciated and why it's actually a damn good sequel and that most people only hate it because of how different in tone and style it is from the first film, but I've already babbled on long enough.

I loved this film, really annoys me all the haters that go errrr you don't see anything, nothing happens, so boring. They just don't have imagination. I loved this how believable this film was and how it was shot, along with the acting and realistic reactions to what they are going through. I used to do a lot of long distance hiking and typically a few weeks after seeing this film I went on a long distance hike, and we misjudged how long it would take us to get through some woods to the next checkpoint and we ran out of light so we had to camp in the middle of the woods. All I could think about was this movie, safe to say I couldn't sleep much, every little noise got me right on edge, we tried to laugh it off but I knew my friend was just as freaked he just hid it better lol. I always think what you don't see is much much scarier. Which Is why I find most modern horror movies just don't work, as they just rely on jump scares and special effects, just give me realism all the way. When josh goes missing and Heather is having a breakdown is so how it would happen, to think that you can't find a stationary vehicle even tho you know where you parked it, but you lose you friend knowing your so not going to find him again. The feeling of helplessness and desperation would be extreme.

Ok here's the deal with this film if you wanna know the backstory
This film was sold in the name of "actual footage" giving everybody the illusion that all the 3 friends did die. Even though the film didn't have any budget and the movie is basically has no effect if you know that it's just a movie but due the marketing campaign people fell for it .
Also i should mention that some people say it's the first "found footage" film that let to it's popularity BUT THATS NOT TRUE . The actual first found footage horror film was CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST which has the same marketing campaign as Blair witch but was much less popular due to being an Italian film and overall subject matter . I would definitely recommend you CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST because it's one of my favourites and one of the most traumatizing films i have seen in my life .

No one had ever really seen a found footage film before and they did some great low key marketing of all these weird online links and I think even some of the "investigators" previous short footage, back dated missing person flyers etc.
You knew deep down it wasn't real, but they planted enough misinformation and little tid-bits before you even saw the film, it left just a tiny bit of doubt in your mind.
Plus (even though I do solo overnight hiking trips etc here in aus) the forest can be mad scary at night. This film defo put me off my solo trips for a couple years. Very easy for your imagination to get away on you when you have to get up in the night to take a piss 😵‍💫

Before anyone watches Cannibal Holocaust, please look up the controversy around the movie so that you can make an informed decision whether you would want to. For example, the making of the film was riddled with animal cruelty and real animal deaths are used in the final film. No judgement if anyone decides to watch it anyway, but I know some would choose not to if they they had all of the information.
There is also a cool story about the director actually being charged with murder after rumors started that some of the human deaths were real, too. That wasn’t true, of course, but talk about press for a horror film.

Most people hate it but it gave me nightmares.
The concept of not knowing what's real, even if what you said and did really happened, still terrifies me because it's a real thing for people like me.
I have mental health issues that cause blackouts sometimes so this concept hits close for me which is probably why I favored it where most won't acknowledge it.

This is the only found footage movie I get down with because when it came out, EVERYONE thought it was real. Which added a whole other scare factor layer to it. And the ending is so polarized. People either love it or hate it. I'm in the group of loving it. I don't think there is a way to show her/it without it being unbelievable or campy/corny/cringy/cheesy. You really just have to leave it to your imagination. (Which is why the interviewee's descriptions were so vague. It's to let YOUR imagination do the work.)

The "behind the scenes" stories about the filming of this movie are better than the actual movie itself.
This movie was huge because it was marketed as a "true" story of "real" found footage. The only other found footage film to have this kind of hype was Cannibal Holocaust, and the production team of that movie was arrested and charged with murder (the charges were dropped when the actors and actresses they were accused of killing showed up in court to prove they were still alive).

It's been fascinating seeing recent reactions to The Blair Witch Project, now that the film is old enough that most of the people who see it for the first time today have little idea of just how effective its marketing was (so many people, including myself, thought it was real). Its more subdued approach to horror is so different from modern horror films, where the scares are loud and in your face, this film shows next to nothing, leaving it up to the imagination of the viewer. This, in turn, made it more believable than it would've been had it actually showed the witch. And the way the ending references what one of the townspeople said at the start of the film was genius. SO creepy.

I recommend [REC] (2007), it's honestly great, go in knowing nothing... other than it's a found footage. It's right next to The Blair Witch Project in terms of great found footage movie. Avoid the American remake Quarantine tho.... it's very very bad.

It was this. This movie is very divisive, people either love it or hate it. This guy was told it was great so he went into it expecting good things. I watched another guy react to this (Sebscreen maybe) and he was told going in that it wasn’t very good. He didn’t enjoy it as much.

  • @ScorpioSW

Since you appeared to enjoy this I highly recommend watching the second sequel from 2016 called "Blair Witch". It's like they took the vibe from this original movie and amplified it with a much better payoff at the end.

Dude… the marketing for this… was insane considering there was no form of social media. And yet we were all convinced it was real with how they promoted the movie on TV, news articles, magazines, and online blogs.
Also, Heather was trying not to panic in that situation in the beginning (even if it seems like she’s in denial) and was hoping that they couldn’t possibly be lost because they still had the map. She was holding onto that hope. But once Mike admits that he purposefully kicked the map in the creek, her admitting that they’re lost is her losing hope in finding their way out.

If you really think of it and do some research on the marketing, this movie made catfishing mainstream. It was marketed as if the three leads really were missing and the directors made websites and flyers and made it everywhere with the website. I liked that the Blair which wasn't seen, adds more fear to the mind, you see in the sequel and it's a VERY disappointing, the 2016 sequel
