Some fun facts about this. Yes this movie is meant to have a tone that is considered Meta. Where the horror movies we all know and love exist in this universe as well as the tropes that come with them. So this movie is very self aware which is why it has that tone. When Sidney stabbed Billy with the umbrella she missed her mark on the pad and stabbed him for real over scar tissue from a heart surgery. So that second scream is very real. The final party scene took over 2 weeks to film and considered one of the longest scenes to film in horror at 40 minutes. Wes Craven did create Nightmare on Elm Street. And he’s the janitor dressed up as Freddy. Tatums actress actually could fit through the cat door, so they had to pin her shirt to the door to make it seem like she couldn’t fit. The movie originally had an NC-17 rating. They had to cut down quite a bit from this movie in terms of the kills because it was much bloodier than the film’s theatrical release. Wes directed the first 4 before he died. So he had a hand in all of them unlike most horror sequels. Billy was definitely modeled after Johnny Depps character in Nightmare on Elm Street. There was a version of one of the sequels where Shaggy lived. I’d watch em all cause Sidney’s character really becomes such an icon as far as survival and development. She is THE final girl.
Another fun fact: I believe Drew Berrymore was originally cast as Sidney, but she thought that it’d be more thrilling to play Casey and be the first killed as it would be a shock to the audience since she was the biggest name attached to the movie. Also, I believe David Arquette was called to audition for the role of Billy, but he was more interested in playing Dewey instead. 😄
Having lost my mom back in 2020, watching this now and seeing Billy and Sidney herself expect her to be “over” her mom’s brutal murder and assault in less than a year is WILD.
Right?! I was like "woman (Sidney" don't apologize for not pushing out! 1 year I think isn't sufficient to get over a death, much less a murder." Like sure not wallowing is good and all, but feel what you gotta feel."
Honestly, the Scream franchise is an absolutely amazing series. I simply can't get enough of it. It also has one of the most rememberable lines ever. Speaking of, "What's your favorite scary movie?" And yes please watch the movies leading up to five, if you don't the story won't make sense.
You need to watch the whole franchise. It has its ups and downs but there isn't a bad Scream movie. I hope you love all of them. Scream 6 is out this week!! ❤🔪❤🔪❤ Great video!
definitely watch 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5. it is worth it. its not just filler. 3 may not be the best movie, but i have good character development, that is important to the story's in the future movies
Watch all of them they all are connected and 2-3 aren’t filler especially 3 which will give you a fresh perspective on how the series started and also offers great character development for certain characters you’ll follow even up to 6. Also many people including myself regards Scream 2 as the best sequel so far Also Meg Ryan’s Jack Quaid’s mom (Hughie from The Boys)
Scream has always been a dark comedy franchise that is super meta and tries to satirize clichés in the horror genre so thats why you feel the movie is a little goofy sometimes because it doesnt take itself too seriously
People have to remember that the 90's was a different era. Social media wasn't a thing, cell phones were in its beginning stages, the internet only had limited web sites to visit and peoples source of entertainment were movies and in - person interaction. I remember when this movie came out. I was 12 and the horror genre was pretty nonexistent. What dominated the box offices were teen movies and love stories. When Scream came out it was like a breath of fresh air when it came to the horror genre. All people were saying was "Did yall see the new movie Scream". I think if people watch "Scary Movie" before they watch "Scream" it sort of ruins the movie. It gets to the point where they are to busy pointing out things that was funny and comparing whats going on in Scary movie to Scream instead of just seeing Scream as its own movie.
I saw this in theaters. It definitely was a different time. I remember something about using the Internet to dial 911. Internet was dial-up then. Watching this made me consider that mobile phones pretty much blew up in the months following. This came out in December of 1996, and I had my first mobile phone by April or May, as did all of my friends. We were in our 20s then. This film influenced a lot of our culture.
The Opening scene was on Bravo's 100 Scariest Movie Moments and when the audience saw Drew Barrymore, they thought she was going to be the hero. Boy, were they wrong!
Each movie is poking fun at some aspect of horror. The first being slashers, second being sequels, third being the wrap up of a trilogy. 4th being remakes and 5th being "requels" and in between is really good character development that you'd miss out on if you skip them. Some aren't as good as others but there really aren't any truly *bad* ones. 3 is considered the worst by a lot of fans but it's not a bad movie. It's just the most different from the others and is more comedic.
The cheerleader in the bathroom was Skeet Ulrich’s (billy) at the time. Also Wes craven was the janitor in the Freddy outfit (he created Freddy too) and the jacket the principal put in was the actual jacket he wore in happy days
Excuse me who said 2 and 3 are filler. The mastermind killer in scream 2 is very important in this franchise and same for the killer in 3. Especially since scream 3 was how this franchise was gonna end. Scream 6 is gonna reference a lot of every movie so it’ll be spoiling the killer reveals in those movies too so you should absolutely watch them.
2&3 are important for 5s story. I highly suggest seeing the whole road just for context. One and done. 4 was my least and i will never see it again. All others have their purpose.
Bro you really have to watch all 5 to get caught up !! They all connect an you can’t appreciate the new ones without the knowledge from all the old ones 🤞🏼
Also you are correct that Wes Craven made nightmare on elm street, and actually made a cameo playing Freddy Krueger as the janitor in scream ! He thought that would be a fun little shout out to the ANOES movies
I rewatch this whole series every other month. It was my introduction to horror because I was such a scaredy-cat as a kid. I definitely recommend watching the whole series.
I believe Wes Craven said he filmed the first Scream movie based around the classic horror stereotypes which is why they’re always referenced. Maybe that’s why it feels like it’s meme feeling all these years later cuz the movie is poking fun at itself
that's just what public bathroom soap dispensers were like in the 90s.. the bottom is a nozzle that you push up on with the palm of your hand and it lets soap run out.
The Janitor that was used as the Nightmare On Elm Street reference was played by Wes Craven, there’s so many little details and references to go through with this movie
Personally, as a massive fan of scream, I think you need to watch them all! They’re great metal slashers, that comment on the stereotypes of horrors The first comments on horror as a whole The second on horror sequels The third on horror trilogies The fourth came out as horror films were being remade and rebooted, like child’s play and nightmare on elm street And then the fifth came out around the time requels were being produced like the new Halloween movies. Yeah the tone of this was intentional. It makes fun of horror movie tropes while also using them. It was originally titled Scary Movie but they changed it to Scream. The first and fourth one are my favorites but I would definitely watch them all!
Scream was meant to be a meta horror movie, slasher movies specifically, so yeah it's a bit of a meme. After this one, it even starts to parody of itself, but in a cool way that was really fresh at the time.
the scream franchise is one of the best and my all time favorite. i will never get tired of watching the scream movies, they're just so good. yeah, people might not find them scary but the storyline is amazing and of course some comedy moments that i love especially from stu and randy. i hope to see you react to all the scream movies, i know people diss the second and third one a lot but they are really good and the plot twist is insane. and you'll also see a lot of character development especially from sidney and gale.

You have got to watch the whole series, 1, 2, 3 and 4, all of them before 5. It’s a whole story. And trust me, those people say it’s “filler” because 2 and 3 were desperately trying to connect the killers to 1’s, as being related to Billy. But also, related to Sidney also. I can only assume they say that because they either disliked/hated them. It’s a continuous storyline, and so it’s time to sit through them and enjoy them for what they are. Do not listen to those people!
the thing about scary movie was that it was parodying a movie that was already a parody. scream was a dark parody of the slasher genre as a whole just in a way where it still worked as a genuine slasher
Scream is a horror comedy who done it kinda movie 👻🔪 They gave a good balance of horror and comedic moments, not too much comedy to take away from the serious moments leading to the big reveals
Yeah Wes Craven's intent was to make it a meta commentary on movies, making it the first self referential movie that made the term "meta" huge. Scream kinda changed movies.

Don't skip 2 and 3. They're fun.
I loved you doing this reaction! I have so many fond memories watching this movie! I've seen it so many times! I can't wait got you to do the sequels!
watch all. even two and three have amazing points.
Dude you gotta do them all. There is no bad scream film. I mean the worst one being 3 isn’t even a bad film. It’s still really good
The janitor is Wes Craven. He did a cameo. Yes, this was meant as a parody kind of. It was very meta.
we will be expecting 4 more scream reactions
Me and my buddy watched this a few days ago and kenny falling off thruck and aidney being in the road had us cracking up
Yeah Wes Craven's intent was to make it a meta commentary on movies, making it the first self referential movie that made the term "meta" huge. Scream kinda changed movies.
BTW, I just started watching your videos recently, I’m working my way through your reaction videos and I’ve loved all of them so far, so keep up the good work!
One of my favorite franchises of all time
Wes Craven created a masterpiece that has become a legend
4:57 "You be aiight." lol
I think it seems like the goofy version because Wes Craven was already satirizing the genre. I think Scary Movie did a good job of keeping the spirit.
1 and 4 are my personal favourites but I think it’s more satisfying watching the later sequels after you’ve watched the rest of them first. 2 and 3 are definitely worth watching!
Yup, created to be a meta take on horror flicks. I didnt know this back when I watched it as a child though.
