    To take on the ultra-competitive small SUV segment, the new Honda HR-V has quite a task on its hands. It faces off against an array of rivals that include the sharp-handling Ford Puma and our current class favourite, the Renault Captur. It’s a crowded class with each competitor offering its own take on the family crossover. With the HR-V, Honda is pinning its hopes on a self-charging hybrid powertrain and sleek, minimalist styling to win buyers over. Nicola Hume tests the driving experience, fuel economy, interior and practicality of Honda's latest crossover, to find out if it can take class honours.

    Had this Honda for a while, and find it perfectly civilized for pottering around town and the occasional foray to the coast.
    The acceleration noise is no different to other automatic cars I’ve owned, and not an issue.
    The rear seats are a doddle to use and have been useful when going to the garden centre.
    Having owned various SUVs from all makes over the years, this is a nice car to drive and own!

    @fssdd7977 2 ปีที่แล้ว +77

    Well if you put your foot down, specially on a petrol engine, it's gona be noisy, unless you're driving an eletric. Most people in Europe have a preconception against Japanese cars, it's always Mercedes, BMW and Audi, those are always amazing...in my opinion Japanese cars, are much more reliable, the maintenance is cheaper, you always have 5 or 7 years of warranty and you can save loads of money if you are buying brand new, comparing to one of the German premium brands.

    • @MLife1972
      @MLife1972 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I disagree - yes all petrol engines make noise, but some are more refined than others. That sounded closer to a lawnmower than a modern petrol engine. No doubting the reliability, but an engine that's revving that hard to get up to speed is going to wear down quicker than a more relaxed power plant.

    • @fssdd7977

      @dysonator99 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The noise issue isn't necessarily the engine. It's more to with the gear box. most hybrids are known to have CVT (seems to be more prolific in Toyotas) and they hold on to the gears for a long time and it sounds horrendous. It puts me right off them.

    Sorry, most drivers disagree with what you say about the "loud sound of the engine." It is simply great! So much different from the flying saucers' boring and dull silence!

  • @ShaneAhmedRaza
    @ShaneAhmedRaza 2 ปีที่แล้ว +37

    To be honest, I have got used to those high rev sounds now. Since these are only produced when I need acceleration it is rather satisfying. Also this high rev sound never lasts beyond a few seconds, as once you settle speed the noise is gone. Even when going at 70mph, I find it very nice and quiet.
    If you have a regular petrol or diesel car and you floor it, they will always do a similar behaviour and they settle down the noise once you are at the desired speed.

      im using the same engine ecvt gearbox for honda city rs (hybrid i-mmd). when you push your throttle during overtaking it will use both petrol and ecvt (above 80kmph), hence the rev sound. its satisfying

    I drove a 2022 Honda HR-V hybrid for my road trip from San Francisco to Yellowstone National Park. I drove over 2100 miles and I average 32MPG for my trip.
    What I like: camping mode works like wonder when I sleep in it in camping ground when temperature was around 30 degree. It was comfortable to sleep inside while the engine is keeping the temperature around 75 degree. Well equipment with technology: lane centering, blind spot monitor, power seat for both driver and passenger seats, moon roof, Adaptive Cruise Control.
    What I don’t like: 32MPG is low for a hybrid vehicle. Lane centering is not reliable. Seat is very uncomfortable. It is the worst seat I have tried ever.

    Engine sound reminds me of the previous gen Yaris with 1.3 engine and 4 speed auto. Weak engine with paper weight flywheel and not many gears, revs easily shoot through the roof and noisy it gets. Love my 1.5 CVT GD Jazz whose engine is probably an ancestor of this HRV. It does get loud when revs are high but the CVT in the Jazz keeps revs quite low most of the time so it's very quiet and relaxed.

    I have a Nissan Quashqai E-Power, it makes the same racing noise if you put your foot down. The engine revs high to turn the generator enough to power the motors to the wheels. It’s disturbing at first if your used to a petrol engine because it normally means you’re in the wrong gear 😂

    Thanks for a great, to-the-point review. So - at least with today's tech from Honda - this is the tradeoff: 50mpg vs some engine noise when you feel randy. At today's gas prices (and tomorrow's), that's fair. I'd say, though, Honda can find a way to take care of that, even today.

    I had such high hopes for this, so it appears to have the small underpowered petrol engine of the old model with the same CVT gearbox, but they have added an ' E ' to tick a box, add into the mix the noise and the smal boot...... and it is looking like i need to keep searching. This should have had a 2.0 cc min with 4 wheel drive and a more up to date gearbox, the boot is important because it is aimed at families and we have something called luggage, just to top off my ' want list ', how about adding in a better soundsystem with an amp and a small sub.......... this is just a re-hash of the old model with the letter E on the tailgate.

    Issue for all consumers, is time-line of order to delivery on new vehicles. I am waiting on a BMW, 13+ months from order/deposit (30th April 2021), vehicle built, sat in Germany waiting for a RAM fitted (Micro-chip thing) with BMW UK unable to give time-line when it will be fitted and delivered. This is real world ground truth, yet we don't hear about this from manufacturers or auto journalists during reviews - funny thing!

      same noise from Subaru's --- all using same CVT tech as the other Japanese manufacturers.

    • @richardsmith579
      @richardsmith579 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It isn’t actually a normal CVT, it doesn’t have a slippy belt, just a single engagement gear system, the engine drives the transmission in a single gear and torque does the rest. The batteries, plus the engine and the computer systems sort the drivetrain out. And the step noises the transmission makes are artificial, just like in most conventional CVTs.

    First of all the engine is too small. I have 2 lt. engine in my Civic 2018 and I live in North America so the engine in horse power is not enought if you are living here. However I have been a Honda owner for at least and close to 10 years and believe me I will not got under a 4 cylinders engine. Because my friend owns a Honda CR-V 2019 and those 1.5 Lt. engine does not produce enough heart in the winter time here in Canada. So Honda it will have to retract because a turbo and please tell me who needs 195 HP. with all the traffic in the road. I am going to tell you 2.4 Lt. that my friend owned before was more economical also than the one that he owns right now. So like I have said the words spread around do not go for 1.5 Lt. engine with a turbo. Turbo breaks down I am telling you better get a lot of money to repair it after the warranty is over.

    A family member who bought one of these cars now regrets doing so, engine revs it's head off (noise very bad) on slight incline, mpg lowest 43-53mpg average. I am now cancelling my order after waiting 9 months not as good as drive as people make out. Also normal motorway driving revs it's head off even when battery is full it does not switch over to EV.
