    I love how bjorn is the only one with his own mind. He’s not caught up with the legend of Ragnar being his father cause he’s bean with him half of his journeys. Ragnar should’ve told his son his true intentions here and they would’ve joined with out a heart beat missing.

      IMO Ubbe was the one who really understood and saw what being King did to Ragnar. He said to Ivar he didnt want their fathers power but the knowledge of what he used it for. Bjorn was away alot traveling the seas while Ubbe had to pretty much be the parental figures to his brothers. He loved their father and was proud to be his son but saw how the politics and backstabbing that came with ruling destroyed him. He said it himself how his father hated kingship and its why he never wanted the throne or any throne at all. If he knew what Ragnar was planning he wouldve stopped him before he even stepped foot on the boat.

      If Bjorn committed to going back to England it could have been years, maybe even another decade before he got to go to the Mediterranean, depending on their losses against Wessex. He was so far along in his plans even before he found out about the settlement that he did not want to go to England. And over time it's become clear Bjorn cares little for maintaining the pursuits of others and things he already has, like how he neglects his family. I doubt he really cares that much about avenging the settlement, just that Ragnar was very much in the wrong to ignore it. But in the end, he's ignoring it for the same reason as Ragnar, who did so in order to explore and go to Paris.
      As for Ragnar not going with Bjorn, Ragnar's legend was so great and he was technically still king, so there would be conflict as to who they are actually following, and Ragnar knew his presence would inevitably drain a lot of the glory Bjorn was owed, and he had no particular interest in furthering his own glory, otherwise he might not have cared about draining Bjorn's credit.

    I wonder if it's right here that Ragnar resolves to die. He has no one to avenge the settlement with him, and most his sons have rejected him. Although Bjorn loves Ragnar, he no longer needs a father figure. If his sons had wanted to go with him, I wonder if Ragnar would have decided to live longer in order to have a relationship with them. As we saw in his hallucination last season, he wishes he had never even become an earl. He wishes he had stayed on his farm with Lagertha, and got to have young Bjorn, his daughter Gyda, Lagertha and Athelstan forever. He just wants his family back. He can't have his new family, so there's nothing left for him in life, save Ivar, who he did still take with him.

    Granted he asked all the sons to go but the way I always saw it, he knew that only Ivar would want to go, and only wanted Ivar with him for it, taking an army was impossible he needed it to only be a small force that he would then kill, I’m not too sure any of his other sons would’ve been willing to kill their own people for their absent father, but Ivar is ruthless and Ragnar figured he would be, I believe he asked everyone else in order to make them feel guilt over not going with him once they heard of his death thereby ensuring revenge against England, I may be wrong but given his words to Ivar and given that he felt the need to explain to Ivar that he is the most important of his sons, I think he truly meant that, to me Ragnar in his final years realised how pointless all his dreams were, the farming, the alliances with England, even his own peoples welfare, given how he was so willing to kill his own people in England and was intent on revenge on England his true Legacy was death, he wanted the old ways to die, he felt they were outdated and needed to go and so he told Ivar to continue this work to “be ruthless” to me he meant in general not just with enemies but with everyone, show no mercy

    • @Melissatn
      @Melissatn 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think the only reason he handed himself over to die is because he couldnt get the army to go with him. So his plan b was basically martyring himself. He wanted to get revenge on Eckbert and get land. Since the sons and army didnt join him, he knew they would accomplish this once he dies because they would come to avenge him

      Stop overthinking so much. The only reason Ivar joined him was because Ivar wanted recognition and acceptance from him. Cause ivar can't walk and that is seen as weak in the viking culture. So he has been treated as less his whole life. Ragnar needed ivar to come with him for his plan of getting revenge on england, king aelle and king ecbert to work. So by only asking ivars brothers he made ivar feel less worthy so when ragnar asked ivar to come, ivar felt he had to prove himself. They're really fast and loose with how much the Scandinavians knew about the world. In the first season they talked about England as if it were a new land that they'd never heard of before. Now you have an episode where they showed traders from the middle east now came to the town but then suggest that the only reason they know about the Mediterranean is because of an old roman map they found in Paris.

    If Ragnar didn't have sex with Kwenthrith why didn't he just say, "no way, that Magnus is mine" to Bjorn.

    • @Gary.009
      @Gary.009 7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Because Magnus is his son. He told Magnus (in front of Ecbert, mind you) that he wasn't so that Ecbert could never use Magnus against him, or any of Magnus' brothers. Watch the scene again and see how Ragnar can't even look Magnus in the eyes. See how reluctant he is to meet him, and how painful it is for him to say that he isn't his father. When Ecbert says "Deep down i've always known (he wasn't your son), Ragnar looks pissed off as hell because he is his son.

    • @ohyeshness22
      @ohyeshness22 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Mr Bear
      He's not ragnars son...he never slept with kwenthrith, we would've known about it! Remember shes a crazy slut who sleeps with anything that moves, but ragnar wasnt interested.
      In my eyes he felt bad for the kid, hence why he didn't wanna meet him because he would have to be the one to tell him his not his father, leaving magnus with no parents at all. Ragnar does care alot about children so i took it as he felt bad for him as to why he couldn't really look at him.
      Also when kwenthrith blurted out that her son was ragnars, she wasn't confident in saying it at all. She was using his name as sort of protection and manipulation because she knows how ecbert feels about ragnar lol. Shes just a crazy ass bitch 😂

      The fact that the parentage of Magnus has generated so much discussion speaks to the brilliance of Michael Hirst's storytelling/writing and the excellent acting of the cast. I've seen the scene of Magnus meeting Ragnar several times. His body language and expressions can be interpreted in so many ways. The only reason I believe that Magnus MAY be Ragnar's son is that Hirst said that HE believed Magnus to be Ragnar's son. It was in an Entertainment Weekly interview in April 2015.
      The episode "In the Uncertain Hour Before Morning" I think was meant to wrap up a lot of hanging questions and bring the next generation into central positions. The episode IMO accomplished that except where Magnus was concerned. Even if Hirst meant to put the parentage issue to rest, viewers want to know the kind's fate. Is the character dead in a ditch or is he going to surface as a hardened adult in a season or two. Hirst has accomplished his objective; He has our attention for another season.

      At a minimum, the actor selected to play Magnus looks like a young Bjorn. If not Ragnar's son, he definitely is the son of one of the vikings Kwennie hired in an earlier episode.

  • @xperiuscastello8613
    @xperiuscastello8613 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The only son I have seen who Ragnar seems to look up to in any capacity is Bjorn. Of-course this has to do with the fact that he’s the eldest, spent most time with Ragnar, saw and went through everything that Ragnar went through, won and lost alongside him. But still, Ragnar looking up to Bjorn with respect and pride is always very wholesome.
