1972 was the first year I started to follow the Phillies with interest when I was a kid. I got to see Lefty pitch two games at the Vet. He lost both of them. One, his 15 game winning streak was broken, I think in extra innings on a broken bat hit.
Steve's a class guy. And a legend of pitch mastery, location, batter read and focus. Very deeply focused. Very Zen. And could hit a long ball. He made me proud to be a phillies fan.
I had the privilege of watching Mr. Carlton throughout his career, but the one thing I will say at this point is: what a great role model he is to all the young adults. It would be great for them to emulate some of the greater qualities he possesses. Thank you Mr. Carlton.
I watched Steve pitch many times and his focus was second to none and so to see this side of him really Shows me that this man was so much more Than just an all time great baseball player 👌👍

Steve Carlton told my dad to get lost when my dad asked for an autograph as an 8 year old. He idolized Mike Schmidt and Steve Carlton as a kid so I’ve never forgotten that story he told me. I’m sure he’s a better guy than I’m making him out to be but I’m not a big Carlton fan…
I was 10 years old and Steve was coming off of one of his 15 straight wins. I was in the bowels of the Vet holding my program and a pen, wearing my “Super Steve” jersey. Steve comes out of the ballpark and walks in my direction….and walked right past me without even a glance. Luckily little known shortstop Craig Robinson was right behind him and was thrilled to give me his autograph. I got over it. I still love Steve Carlton.

Steve was never a talker, I'm surprised he talked that long, but he was a great pitcher, one of the best, very deserving.
You only get inducted once so he made the most of it.

Nice that Lefty acknowledged Timmy McCarver's abilities. Unfortunately, growing up in new york i only know him as a very bad announcer.
He was a very, very, very bad broadcaster but not a bad catcher. God rest his soul though.
As a human being, he was, well, a great pitcher.
