Greatest day in Philadelphia Phillies history, when not only Mike Schmidt not only gave this induction speech, but also Richie Ashburn was inducted into the HoF as well.
Mike Schmidt was the best all around player that the Philadelphia Phillies ever had. An unbelievable combination of fielding, defense, base running and power. Yes he struck out often, but was a formidable offensive threat. My only regret was not getting to see him play one last time at the Vet before he retired. Fortunately, I attended the last game at the Vet, and saw him live as they closed down the old ballpark in the closing ceremonies. Thanks, Mike for all of the great Phillies memories. You are one class act!
honestly he didnt even strike out that much if you go back in look he had one season in which he stuck out I think 180 but after that he never struck out that much again. shit now a days these players are striking out 220 plus a season lol

I was blessed to be there in 1995 to see him and Richie Ashburn inducted into the Hall Of Fame that day. It was an absolutely amazing day that I will always treasure as long as I live.
Being from Philly, it was always a tough sports town to play in, and I remember some of the fans being so hard on Schmidt. How I remember him handling it, he just tuned out from the madness , much like Steve Carlton did. Plus our local media didn’t help matters either. The press dubbed him as cold, anti- social and distant, when all he was trying to do was be the best player he knew he could be. What a helluva player he was, and we do miss hearing his name called to come to bat. Had he played at the current ballpark Citizens Bank Ballpark , he’d be cracking at least 60-70 homers per year, in that little ass park.
Same. My dad had a radio connected to the same receptacle the light switch was connected to in our garage. When you turned on the light, you also turned 610 WIP. As a young kid painting model cars in the garage, the fans were so crazy I ended up hating all of the philly teams and still do to this day.
I was there - stayed with some friends in Binghamton, where I had gone to college, and then drove to Cooperstown that morning. This was a great speech, as was Richie Ashburn's. It was a big thrill being part of the big crowd that day - it was sort of like transporting the home crowd from a home Sunday afternoon Phillies game from the Vet up to Upstate NY. The only thing I would change about the whole experience was not getting the sunburn!
Super hot and sticky day. I was 15. Took a bus from south jersey with the family. Traffic was insane. But I'll never forget any of that magical weekend
We went up on a Thursday and stayed until Tuesday. We fortunately missed all of the traffic by doing that. We stayed in a pop-up camper at a Campground and we had an absolute blast. We met so many great people from the Philadelphia region (even ran into a couple of people we knew from South Jersey) that weekend. It was an experience of a lifetime that I'll always remember and treasure.
Mike Schmidt was one of my favorite MLB players growing up through the 70s and 80s. Pete Rose, George Brett, Johnny Bench, Ozzie Smith, Nolan Ryan, Willie Stargell & Dave Parker (even though they played for the Pirates) were also my fave players to watch when I was a kid
Mike is a classy gentlemen. He was a cub killer. Being a cubs fan he let me down. Yet I had great respect for him. In 1980 I rooted for him against Houston and KC. His rivalry with Dave Kingman over homeruns in 1979 was phenomenal. I just wanted to say Mike thanks for making baseball interesting for me. I’ll never forget you and Kong.

When he was in one of his first spring training games as a rookie, he took a walk, and ran down to first base. The other team (I believe it was the Yankees) made fun of him for it, and stuck him with the nickname. Good for him for shoving it down their throats.

I'm 50, Pete was my idle growing up. I agree with you. It doesn't look good for Pete. When I heard that he bet on baseball, I knew that he would NEVER bet against his own team, whether as a player or coach.

He's already in the Hall of Fame actually his records and statistics are everywhere he just hasn't been inducted.
