- An unprecedented combination of power and defense molded Mike Schmidt into one of the game's greatest third basemen. The powerful right-handed hitter slugged 548 career home runs, belted 40 or more long balls in three separate seasons and hit 30 or more home runs 10 other times. He established a Major League record for third basemen by clouting 48 homers in 1980 and once hit four consecutive round-trippers in a single game in 1976. A three-time National League MVP, he was a 12-time All-Star, won 10 Gold Gloves and was named The Sporting News Player of the Decade for the 1980s.

This is the best HOF speech ever. It's full of thankfulness, respect, and gratitude...towards everyone. Also acknowledges his own faults. Schmidt is totally worthy of all the admiration of everyone

I was there. It was one of the great memories I spent with my grandfather who was a big Philadelphia Phillies fan.
Being from Philly, it was always a tough sports town to play in, and I remember some of the fans being so hard on Schmidt. How I remember him handling it, he just tuned out from the madness , much like Steve Carlton did. Plus our local media didn’t help matters either. The press dubbed him as cold, anti- social and distant, when all he was trying to do was be the best player he knew he could be. What a helluva player he was, and we do miss hearing his name called to come to bat.
Had he played at the current ballpark Citizens Bank Ballpark , he’d be cracking at least 60-70 homers per year, in that little ass park.

Same. My dad had a radio connected to the same receptacle the light switch was connected to in our garage. When you turned on the light, you also turned 610 WIP. As a young kid painting model cars in the garage, the fans were so crazy I ended up hating all of the philly teams and still do to this day.

@@XA351GT I agree with you that he should be in the HOF. But the nickname Charlie Hustle was given to him as a derogatory term. When he was in one of his first spring training games as a rookie, he took a walk, and ran down to first base. The other team (I believe it was the Yankees) made fun of him for it, and stuck him with the nickname. Good for him for shoving it down their throats.

Great player, great appreciation and respect of the game. I totally agree with his comment of Pete Rose. Why have a Hall of Fame if Rose is not inducted. He got in a pissing contest with Bart Giamatti (I think I spelled that right) is the only reason he's not in it today. I've always wanted to go to coopertown but until Rose is inducted I see no point.
I'm 50, Pete was my idle growing up. I agree with you. It doesn't look good for Pete. When I heard that he bet on baseball, I knew that he would NEVER bet against his own team, whether as a player or coach.
@@doug2993 I believe Pete Rose will go to the Hall of Fame. But I believe it will be after he dies. He's already in the Hall of Fame actually his records and statistics are everywhere he just hasn't been inducted. But I've heard a lot of interviews from Nolan Ryan and others and even Rose said he thinks eventually he will get there he just won't be alive to see it. And that is the biggest shame of all, they know he's going it's just a shame because he deserves it more than the fans.. I'm like you when I was a kid I believed Superman had a poster Pete Rose hanging on his wall. And you know Especially with Barry Bonds probably 20 other players that has been caught playing ball dirty and a lot of other issues different players have had. The day Rose Dies the baseball world will be turned on their head like the day Ruth died.

Mike is a classy gentlemen. He was a cub killer. Being a cubs fan he let me down. Yet I had great respect for him. In 1980 I rooted for him against Houston and KC. His rivalry with Dave Kingman over homeruns in 1979 was phenomenal. I just wanted to say Mike thanks for making baseball interesting for me. I’ll never forget you and Kong.
Mike Schmidt was the best all around player that the Philadelphia Phillies ever had. An unbelievable combination of fielding, defense, base running and power. Yes he struck out often, but was a formidable offensive threat. My only regret was not getting to see him play one last time at the Vet before he retired. Fortunately, I attended the last game at the Vet, and saw him live as they closed down the old ballpark in the closing ceremonies. Thanks, Mike for all of the great Phillies memories. You are one class act!
honestly he didnt even strike out that much if you go back in look he had one season in which he stuck out I think 180 but after that he never struck out that much again. shit now a days these players are striking out 220 plus a season lol
I was born in 1973 and got to watch him play at Veteran's Stadium for nearly my entire childhood. He's the reason why I'm still a diehard baseball and Phillies fan to this day. I was blessed to be there in 1995 to see him and Richie Ashburn inducted into the Hall Of Fame that day. It was an absolutely amazing day that I will always treasure as long as I live.

Mike Schmidt was one of my favorite MLB players growing up through the 70s and 80s. Pete Rose, George Brett, Johnny Bench, Ozzie Smith, Nolan Ryan, Willie Stargell & Dave Parker (even though they played for the Pirates) were also my fave players to watch when I was a kid

#20 Mike Schmidt was the ultimate role model. His on field performance was probably the finest of his era. Mike looked and acted like the kind of person that so many of us aspire to be.
Can anyone tell me if there has ever been. That many people to show up at the baseball of frame. For a player like the greatest sports fans in the world do. Say all you want to say about the Philadelphia sports fans. It's one word To describe us it's called passion passionate we really do believe that we are a big part of our sports teams. When one of our teams lose. We don't say did they lose. It's we lost not they. We it's aways we.

I remember getting a Mike Schmidt instructional video for Christmas when I was 10 or 11. We were Yankee fans, but certainly knew who Schmidt was.
I was there - stayed with some friends in Binghamton, where I had gone to college, and then drove to Cooperstown that morning. This was a great speech, as was Richie Ashburn's. It was a big thrill being part of the big crowd that day - it was sort of like transporting the home crowd from a home Sunday afternoon Phillies game from the Vet up to Upstate NY. The only thing I would change about the whole experience was not getting the sunburn!

Super hot and sticky day. I was 15. Took a bus from south jersey with the family. Traffic was insane. But I'll never forget any of that magical weekend
We went up on a Thursday and stayed until Tuesday. We fortunately missed all of the traffic by doing that. We stayed in a pop-up camper at a Campground and we had an absolute blast. We met so many great people from the Philadelphia region (even ran into a couple of people we knew from South Jersey) that weekend. It was an experience of a lifetime that I'll always remember and treasure.

Speaking out against the greed of players and owners, speaking out on the absurd life ban of Pete Rose, speaking out against the former comish (not that the one of today is any inch better, he is worse)... Little did Mike Schmidet back then know that MLB baseball got even worse after. Today its about business and gambling only. The cheaters (aka players) give a damn about fans. Thus fans should turn their backs against this sxxxers. Stop being naive, cheering for the cheaters and criminals. Live your own life instead of wasting time to watch the life of others and wearing their number on your backs.

"Schmitty" -- the greatest all-around third baseman ever, and greatest Phillie ever. Terrific speech, but I just can't accept Rose as a Hall of Famer. You can't bet on baseball. Period. He made his choice -- time and time again.

In this speech is one of the few times you will ever hear a famous white person thank God. Other races always thank God. But, I rarely hear white celebrities that are not southerners thanking God. This is what makes Mike Schmidt a legend to me !!!!!!!!

The first game I ever attended was in San Francisco at Candlestick the very next day after Mike Schmidt's final game in baseball which was also at Candlestick. May 29, Ron Darling vs Don Robinson. I had just turned nine two weeks before. I remember the video tribute to Schmidt.

I was there that day! Drove up from Scranton with my siblings. That's when baseball was great. Schmidt and Ashburn! Fantastic day!
Now the Phils took a day off just a couple seasons ago to honor a very different guy, a guy who forcefully violated a woman and was shot trying to kidnap her kids. Those players did nothing for those victims though. That makes them evil. So sad how far the game has fallen.
