But Elvis records still sold very well in the long term. he was just the king.

This “Elvis & the Black Community” is a very well edited shortened version of a show that DJ Casey Kasem made called “The Echo Will Never Die”. I applaud whoever originally edited and shortened the show to make this “black community” video! It has caused many people change their minds about Elvis, who would never have watched the original show.

Many of us saw him on early tv in the 50%, we were as young as 3-4 years old. My parents were watching, they were about his age. I’ll never forget how that man not only got my full attention, something gripped my spirit/soul... and that touch never left! Just from tv as a very young child. Still in black and white, no color in the 50’s. Techno color came out in the 60’s. Of course you had to buy a color TV set.

You had segregation but here our Indigenous community were seen as nothing more than animals…they had no rights at all, their children were stolen, they could not frequent any establishment (shops, pubs etc.) and they were placed in “communities” led by Caucasian churches. I’m a Caucasian Australian, also part of the “stolen generation” of children stolen from their parents by the government, and I am still disgusted with the way others that are different, be it via skin colour, religion etc. are treated abominably by governments and others! Once a song is out there, anyone can record it, rearrange it, etc. "Covering" a song means to record it AFTER the original artist ALREADY HAD THEIR OWN HIT with it. The fact that Elvis often did it better than the originals he covered (as well as making changes to the songs) was a sore point with the original artists.

Swinging your hips when you dance was considered sexual back then, and teenagers were not allowed to express sexual feelings. Was considered dirty by many parents. Rock and roll Music came from Rhythm and blues. There were blues clubs located off the main roads in rural parts of the country and some of them also featured lots of drinking and even prostitution and maybe even strippers. There were plenty of blues songs that had suggestive sexual content. Even many black church going families did not consider this type of music to be respectable and discouraged their children from listening to it. Rhythm and Blues music was considered to be black music and was played on black radio stations and not white radio stations. And black music was blamed for Corrupting the youth with sexual content. In the mid Fifties, this started to change, and black artists started to get more and more airplay on so-called "White" radio stations. Elvis helped to bring awareness to black music and to popularize it more fully. While some white youth listened to artists like Little Richard and Chuck Berry, many did not know about or have access to this music. Elvis made his versions and got them played on mainstream stations and it made these artists even bigger than they might have been had not Elvis helped to break down racial barriers in music.
great, thank you... Elvis had his first hit "Thats Alright Mama" in 1954. Chuck Berry, Little Richard, and Bo Diddiley all had their first hits in 1955. ELvis was influenced by Big Boy Crudup, Willie DIxon, Muddy Waters etc from blues... One thing that seems to be ignored is Rock and Roll was not just blues-it was a combination of country, blues, pop of the era and gospel music. All 4 of these became rock and roll. BUT he was also influenced by Eddy Arnold, Hank Snow, Hank WIlliams etc from country music. And influenced by Dean Martin, Bing Crosby, Nat King Cole and others from pop music of the era NOT to forget he was born in Tupelo Mississippi and lived on the poor black side of town where he went to black and white churches and loved gospel music. He "organically" was drenched in the black culture of the south, I must point out that Chuck Berry was influenced greatly by country artists-his first hit "Maybelline" was actually a country artist Bob Wills song from the 40s "Ida Red" that Chuck wrote new lyrics for and sped up. No one says Chuck stole from country-he was influenced by country. Ray Charles had several hits with "cover versions" of country songs-some of the first music he heard as a child was from the " Grand ole Opry on radio. He was influenced by country-no one says he stole from it. BB King who was a great friend with Elvis said: "Once a music is exposed to us, anyone can take or add to it -music is for everyone" and he added "to me they did not get it wrong when they called him the King" James Brown was one of the few people who was allowed to visit the “King” at his open coffin. “He was in there for hours,” Elvis’ guitarist James Burton recalled in an interview. “I think they had to drag him away because he wouldn’t leave.” 😮🥰

I'm not sure if you guys have watched Ruby Leigh on The Voice you need to watch her audition it's the most ever viewed audition in voice history . She's a 16 year old kid you need to hear her and she does an Elvis song later on and she doesn't try to sound like Elvis but that girl tore the roof off the place with it. Her audition she sing a song almost a hundred years old and rip the roof off the place.
It's truly hard to imagine how different our culture was back then.. My parents grew up in this era and my Mom was a huge Elvis fan.. Mom never has said to me that my grandparents didn't want her listening to Elvis. But I'm truly not sure they knew what she was listening to because .. well. it was all country music for my Pop-Pop and Mom-Mom.. have no clue. lol.. Totally agree. And the really crazy part is if you use someone else's music, they get paid royalties. I know as I worked in the industry. Music copyright is strong, stronger than patents. So any time he performed someone else's music, the song writer was paid a royalty. Many of them made tons of $ when he covered their songs.

Elvis's gospel music will really give you goosebumps. I love all his music but most especially the live versions where you can see and hear his passion, love, see his fun side, and his admiration for his band, his back up singers, his quartet and his fans.
My Dad who was born in 1922 in Mississippi would say about music is that it would bounce from one american culture into another and make it better. Like Gumbo ( he loved cajun and creole food) wouldn't be the same without the African, Latin and European flavors combining in that pot and it never comes out identically.

You had segregation but here our Indigenous community were seen as nothing more than animals…they had no rights at all, their children were stolen, they could not frequent any establishment (shops, pubs etc.) and they were placed in “communities” led by Caucasian churches. I’m a Caucasian Australian, also part of the “stolen generation” of children stolen from their parents by the government, and I am still disgusted with the way others that are different, be it via skin colour, religion etc. are treated abominably by governments and others! Elvis was way beyond his time by sticking to his own beliefs and not those of the general public and the government.

Once a song is out there, anyone can record it, rearrange it, etc. "Covering" a song means to record it AFTER the original artist ALREADY HAD THEIR OWN HIT with it. The fact that Elvis often did it better than the originals he covered (as well as making changes to the songs) was a sore point with the original artists.

Swinging your hips when you dance was considered sexual back then, and teenagers were not allowed to express sexual feelings. Was considered dirty by many parents. Rock and roll Music came from Rhythm and blues. There were blues clubs located off the main roads in rural parts of the country and some of them also featured lots of drinking and even prostitution and maybe even strippers. There were plenty of blues songs that had suggestive sexual content. Even many black church going families did not consider this type of music to be respectable and discouraged their children from listening to it. Rhythm and Blues music was considered to be black music and was played on black radio stations and not white radio stations. And black music was blamed for Corrupting the youth with sexual content. In the mid Fifties, this started to change, and black artists started to get more and more airplay on so-called "White" radio stations. Elvis helped to bring awareness to black music and to popularize it more fully. While some white youth listened to artists like Little Richard and Chuck Berry, many did not know about or have access to this music. Elvis made his versions and got them played on mainstream stations and it made these artists even bigger than they might have been had not Elvis helped to break down racial barriers in music.

Elvis had his first hit "Thats Alright Mama" in 1954.
Chuck Berry, Little Richard, and Bo Diddiley all had their first hits in 1955. ELvis was influenced by Big Boy Crudup, Willie DIxon, Muddy Waters etc from blues... One thing that seems to be ignored is Rock and Roll was not just blues-it was a combination of country, blues, pop of the era and gospel music. All 4 of these became rock and roll.
BUT he was also influenced by Eddy Arnold, Hank Snow, Hank WIlliams etc from country music.
And influenced by Dean Martin, Bing Crosby, Nat King Cole and others from pop music of the era
NOT to forget he was born in Tupelo Mississippi and lived on the poor black side of town where he went to black and white churches and loved gospel music. He "organically" was drenched in the black culture of the south,
I must point out that Chuck Berry was influenced greatly by country artists-his first hit "Maybelline" was actually a country artist Bob Wills song from the 40s "Ida Red" that Chuck wrote new lyrics for and sped up.

I'm not sure if you guys have watched Ruby Leigh on The Voice you need to watch her audition it's the most ever viewed audition in voice history . She's a 16 year old kid you need to hear her and she does an Elvis song later on and she doesn't try to sound like Elvis but that girl tore the roof off the place with it. Her audition she sing a song almost a hundred years old and rip the roof off the place.
It's truly hard to imagine how different our culture was back then.. My parents grew up in this era and my Mom was a huge Elvis fan.. Mom never has said to me that my grandparents didn't want her listening to Elvis. But I'm truly not sure they knew what she was listening to because .. well. it was all country music for my Pop-Pop and Mom-Mom.. have no clue. lol.. I'm an Elvis fanatic I also really love the sounds of Chuck Berry Sam Cook Otis Redding etc but here's my problem with this I'm tired of hearing how he stole rock n roll when the fact of the matter is if you listen to most of the original artists recordings songs he did they are much slower and bluesy Elvis rocked them out so why can't everyone just agree that it was a group effort that apparently worked out to everyone's favor so yes he was and is the king of rock n roll I don't hear anyone bitching about James Brown being the Godfather of Soul or Michael Jackson being the KingOf Pop and the man was the farthest thing from a racist as you can get he grew up in the ghetto
Totally agree. And the really crazy part is if you use someone else's music, they get paid royalties. I know as I worked in the industry. Music copyright is strong, stronger than patents. So any time he performed someone else's music, the song writer was paid a royalty. Many of them made tons of $ when he covered their songs.
