I researched a bunch before I changed my LPOP and harmonic balancer. I saw a lot of people use the air chisel on the fan nut, but i didn’t want to tear mine up like you see in the videos. I also had no desire to remove my radiator. Nor did I want to “tap” on my harmonic balancer with a mallet (instructions on the new balancer said this voids the warranty). Luckily after watching lots of videos I found acceptable ways of doing things. First, gear wrench makes a fan clutch wrench not expensive and works great. Second, a well placed breaker bar and a tap of the ignition will loosen the crankshaft bolt. Third, Harbor Freight sells a pulley puller for $17 works great. Fourth, oreilly loaned me an installer to get the balancer on without a mallet. No, I didn’t make a video…..my bad. It makes me laugh that people say buy ford parts (Melling?), but then dont use the right tools for the job.
I've used a fan clutch wrench and destroyed it attempting to break the fan clutch loose. As far as using the ignition, I never had the courage to try that as it seemed like such a scary option if it didn't go as planned.
Well I used both, and they worked flawlessly. Fan tool once when I changed the water pump, then again when I did the LPOP. Breaker bar just LPOP. Yea I was nervous but it went really well. I just watch so many videos where the fan bolt is mutilated, I can’t do it. I really appreciate your video though. Without it and similar I would have been too afraid to do this much appreciated repair.
To remove the fan there is special tool Lisle 43300 Pneumatic Fan Clutch Wrench or a cheaper imitation. Avoids beating up the fan hex for the 3-4 times needed for life of a 7.3l equipped vehicle -- water pump a few times and the oil pump. Has assorted attachments to work on other engines, most people who would need this for 7.3 probably have other vehicles that need maintenance and repairs.
Hey Eddie, great video, I was wondering what the thread pitch is on the 3 bolts that screws into the balancer, I've heard that most of the puller kits don't have the correct size for the 7.3l and you have to purchase 3 of the correct size. Thanks man and thanks for sharing your video. Jay.
I'm not sure, they were probably metric. My set came with them but I lost one and would have been in so much trouble if I couldn't find a replacement in the shop.

That's what I needed!!!
How many miles were you sitting at when you realized it was time to do the change?
I think around 300,000
