This video is made possible by Squarespace: www.squarespace.com/jasonmorris
See it here first. I talk all about the low light performance and match it up against the Sony A7IV and also against the Sony FX6. These two cameras are amazing cameras in Sony's full frame range. Can they beat the new camera on the block.
The Sony FX30 is an APS-C sensor and it is the newest camera in the Sony Cinema Line.
It performs like an absolute beast in many different situations but it does seem to perform a little under the two full frame cameras.
Nonetheless the Sony FX30 will be considered to be a perfect A camera or B camera for a lot of filmmakers.
Adding 4k 120fps, RAW external recording, 6k downsampled 4k footage, superb auto focus capabilities and overall more features than the FX3!
Some of my favourite Sony A7IV features are found in this camera such as focus breathing compensation, focus mapping, clear image zoom, active steadyshot and variable shutter.

Really appreciate the content you're pushing out. One comment, as others have stated, this is more of a high ISO test. We really need to see how the camera performs in a true low light + high iso situation like a poorly lit wedding reception dance floor. Thanks for taking the time to put these together! 99 percent sure I'll be adding the FX30 as an A cam to my a7iv.

The room looks well lit because the ISO is up high to exposure the shot with middle grey 1.7 stops over. You are most likely thinking of a "I stuffed up my exposure and completely under exposed the shot" test. I recommend you watch a latitude test video or under exposure test video. I would also recommend no-one underexpose any camera and learn to exposure in-camera correctly for optimal results

I’m switching over to Sony and I’m having trouble deciding weather to go full frame or not, and honestly full frame doesn’t seem worth it with the exception of the A7SIII which is out of my price range unfortunately:(

Hi Jason. The FX30 is very tempting. One aspect that I am cautious about is mixing APS-C gear with Full frame. What are the issues? Do you use your full frame lenses, or get specific APS-C - hence increasing your investment in glass. I do have a couple of old A mount APS-Cs which could geta new lease of life - though I doubt the auto focus is anywhere near as good as my current full frame lenses for my FX6 ad A7 iv.

    • @JasonMorrisphotocinema

I can't imagine any aps-c sensor would be better than any full frame sensor for lowlight. So I'll go out on a limb and say, Definitely not. But the dynamic range of the fx30 I'm sure will make it a good enough contender if I also had to guess. Same with the panasonic gh6. It's micro 4/3 sensor is Itty bitty, but it apparently has some incredibly impressive dynamic range abilities. That being said it still will never compete with larger sensors no matter how many technological tricks they implement

I am in doubt about buying an FX30 vs A7IV. I like to shoot my social events without any added lighting (It's a personal thing) and the question at hand is whether the FX30 will be good enough in lowlight so I don't have to deal with noise in post production. I love the form factor of the FX30 and for my style of shooting to have good stabilization, zoom lever, 4:2:2...it's great, but I wouldn't want to crash in lowlight. Currently I do the events with the A7III and I am delighted with the quality of the images. I've seen a lot of reviews about the FX30, but when they talk about poor performance in lowlight, they always compare it to FX3, A7SIII, A7IV... and I don't think it's a fair comparison.
The lenses I use are usually the Sony 18-105 f4 and if needed I could use the Sony 50mm f1.8 OSS, Tamron 18-35 f1.8 or in FF the Tamron 28-75 2.8
I also have an old FS5 and it would be great to be able to put the FX30 head to head

The low light performance was quite impressive even with its smaller sensor. I have the A7iv and it's quite impressive on its own. Should I trade my A7iv in for the FX30? Its ridiculous to me that cameras like the a7iv don’t have internal LUTs or shutter angle or some of the other cine features. Its a hybrid…which means it SHOULD have both…cine features and photo features… there’s NO excuse for them not having them when it’s primarily software/firmware.
Any camera that has picture profiles should be able to load LUTs internally.
Shutter angle really shouldn’t be that hard to put in any camera that can do video… since it’s essentially just a setting like “auto ISO” etc.

This will be a tough decision, for sure.
Luckily enough, I am not a pro like you - just an amateuer who got addicted by taking movie pictures, coming from photography.
So, for the moment, there is not too much gear that does fit my S1H only - just the kit lens, a cage, and a Sirui FF Anamorphic lens which I should be able to get another mount for. Ah, and a quite expensive Novoflex adapter to mount Nikon F-glass on L-mount cameras.
All other gear, such as tripods, fluid heads, mono pods, cables, NDs,... can be reused.
And I already own 2 e-mount sony lenses from my old Sony A6000. So, would be ready to shoot.
The major question in my case is how mich the switch will cost me on the bottom line.
But the perspective to carry a little camera with me while I am jut having a walk or sightseeing tour with my wife that in addition has 100% reliable AF (I mean the camera -:) ), and does deliver great cinema-acceptable footage is just so attractive.

Re the image quality coming out of the S1H I am quite happy so far.
Anyway, I experienced the 10 Bit internal codec (even the 400MBit/sec one) to have its limitation when grading - I often get bandings in blue skies or large surfaces with different light shadings when going massive grading - so, much care required in post. I know, recording externally could ease the pain a bit.
The Sigma FP would solve the image quality limitations with RaW DNG right away, and it's small and L-mount.
What would you thing about the Lumix GH6? Yes, it's Micro 4/3 sensor only, but would allow smaller primes, making a smaller overall footprint when running & gunning.
