When understanding breast cancer we must also understand how to read the reports for breast cancer detection tests to avoid feeling more anxious than necessary. Every ultrasound or mammography report will reveal a BI-RADS score as assessed by the radiologist. This score is an indication of whether or not any chest lump has a tendency or existence of cancer. This is used to assess the potential of a lump but not confirm the stage of cancer if at all.
Score= 4 or 5 : the lump might be cancerous and a biopsy is compulsory at this point to confirm the existence of cancer
Score = 0 : the lump was not properly detected due to the density of breast tissue. This happens in younger patients and so a follow up MRI or CT scan is prescribed to confirm the same.
Score = 1 : a clear indication that there is no problem or suspicion of cancer
Score = 2 : here also the chances of having cancer are ruled out
Score = 3 : you will be asked to undergo another screening test in 6 months to check for any changes
