Deb would have told Dexter many times during their lives "I love you", as would many other family. There's no doubt Dexter responded with awkward "thank you" or even "....oh ok". He would certainly know by now the "correct" response is to return the "I love you". I don't want to say it's necessarily bad writing, but maybe it could have been handled a bit better since this really doesn't make much sense.
It would make sense if Dexter hadn't ever been told "I love you" by family or maybe a girlfriend. Then it would make perfect sense Dexter would only have awkward responses to give since he doesn't feel these things. He's able to perfectly fake emotions most of the time, but every now and then I feel like the writers just forget his character.

@@finchvalor Exactly and it was weird things like this that got him caught out by people who didn't by into his act, they worked too hard to portray cold side and maybe thought we was too stupid to notice the difference if they did things that actually made sense like what you said for example since that's how real psychopaths and sociopaths would think, they rely only on their logic especially psychopaths that can't feel anything, at least a sociopath like dexter could feel something even if it wasn't much compared to neurotypical people so would better understand how to manipulate people around him, so he would have picked up on things like this faster too, even deb too if she kept saying she loved him and his response was always robotic eventually she would notice that as a ref flag as most people would
So not only did they dumb down dexter character so all viewers could pick up on it, they dumbed down deb too just so it could all work and make sense, only times they didn't dumb it down was for characters they got rid of early like doakes who really should have been kept for longer in the book he is a key character in dexter life they got rid of him too early and dumbed his character down too, in a way I don't blame them since most people don't actually understand how personality disorders work and even what they are especially back then, tbh I didn't know what a psychopath was back then either lol so obviously they did it so we can still see what's wrong but some of us ain't slow like that but they have to appeal to everyone so makes sense
Just wish they was more tactical about it lool they could have had dex fake "I love you" as in deb case he would actually be telling the truth, you can tell even early on in the show he actually loves deb and couldn't or wouldn't harm her like that, which isn't typical for psychopath and is another reason why I believe dexter isn't a psychopath he is a sociopath, his brother is a psychopath and a better example of it, dexter was never on board with killing deb due to his very real love for her, something brain can't actually feel, dexter knew his brother was far more messed up than he was, if he was a real psychopath odds are he could still go through with killing deb since he wouldn't be able to feel any real love for her just familiarity but its clear he loves her so writers didn't need to dumb that down

Yeah it was a good response. I don't think he even said it much before if at all as there's another scene in which he actually says he loves her, after she's hysterical
And Dexter doesn't need to tell her everytime she says it as it's a brother and sister relationship. Deb would just put it down to men being men. Dexter only needs to fake that emotional response around people like Rita

@@finchvalorjust to add further to what you’ve already described very well. This conversation also makes less sense when you realise Dexter has probably heard countless people exchange them exact sentiments across his life “I love you” , “I love you too”. This scene would have played out so much better if he said thank you in his head yet said I love you too out loud to deb. This change would make the scene so much more realistic but also colder. In this scene Dex just comes across a little autistic when he says thank you yet if they had that line remain as monologue it would portray Dex as more cold and calculating. Having his initial relief flood his mind yet remaining detached enough emotionally to give the appropriate social response.
I love this show but there’s so many issues like this, not to mention Dexter just comes across a bit like an over the top edge lord sometimes when he very clearly shows and feels emotions yet says corny line likes “empty inside, just like me”. Personally them lines make me eye roll when they’re thrown in for the sake of reminding the viewer “look how edgy and different our protagonist is to a typical”. - great show nonetheless and went up into my face but I think most would agree to stop watching after Rita’s death

Dexter was three when Harry adopted him and hoped he could get to him in time to save him, which lead him to give Dexter a code to live by

I always thought when watching this scene that Arthur was killing Rita. He probably knocked on the door with some story and got her to let him in. Or he was inside the house waiting for her or someone to come in. I think he was pulling up outside dexters house as Rita was unloading her things from the taxi. He saw and watched her and then found his window of opportunity. Them not showing this in the show left it all up to our imaginations and it sure pushed through my mind.

I wasn't sure what was gonna happen in the season 7 finale when Deb was in that standoff between Dex and Laguerta in the shipping container. If she arrested Dex, it would've been interesting seeing his incarceration and maybe assisting Deb from behind bars with the Brain Surgeon. If she had killed Dexter instead of Laguerta, would Deb have gone through a similar change Dexter and Harrison did from being "born in blood?" Would she have to bear the code and continue Dex's work with him as the Dark Passenger? That, too, could've been interesting. But I was surprised they went the route they did with Deb shooting Laguerta and the improvised breakdown from Carpenter, where Deb was cradling Laguerta's lifeless body while Dex watched in disbelief and guilt.
I remember seeing someone's fan theory for the season 8 finale, which I felt would've been a much better ending for Dexter, where after Deb was shot by Oliver Saxon, Vogel's son, we still have Deb die, but instead of Dex killing Oliver in "self defense," he captured Oliver, resetting his kill room at a different location. Then, in an unexpected turn, Dexter would've brought a grieving Quinn to the newly set up kill room for Saxon, essentially revealing himself as the Bay Harbor Butcher and giving him the choice whether to end Oliver's life with the knife or not; kinda passing the torch while Dexter would leave with Hannah and Harrison. That would've been so much more satisfying to me than the ridiculous Monty Python direction they gave us.

@@sebastianemond5313 Deb wouldn't have became dexter if she killed him lol she's a neurotypical and a sane one so would have just sent her off the rails more than she was when she killed laguerta, remember deb loved dexter and not just the sibling kind either she would have lost her shit if she killed him
Show would have been over at that point tbh especially if doakes wasn't killed so early, the writers did some things that don't make sense and its what ruined the ending to a top tier show, doakes should have been kept alive as long as possible and not dumbed down, he had dexter at gunpoint but was still tricked lol no chance a real encounter would have saw dexter get cooked the moment he made any move and the book version of this show was different, doakes was a key player and killer himself but in the show the completely ditch that and just reduce him to a side villain kmt
And deb wouldn't have taken so long to figure dex out either, they made her character will dumb and conveniently smart when it suited the angle, when her character probably would have really picked up on dexter around the same time doakes did, yes as sibling she would have been used to his weird personality but that doesn't mean she would have just brushed it off, she a cop and a good one there is no chance she would do that, a red flag to her is a red flag so dexter would have been caught sooner if they actually stuck to what's supposed to happen instead of trying to preserve his character
Perfect ending would have seen dexter get caught by doakes for example with laguerta knowing and doakes chasing him as he is trying to escape town or something, they getting into a heated high chase shootout and both crash, doakes being army trained would have field advantage over dexter since dexter doesn't use guns like that so would be outmatched shooting at doakes, so maybe dexter tries to hide in forrest somewhere and catch doakes off gaurd, they have a fight once dexter can surprise him and stab doakes but not before being shot himself, so as both lie dying on the floor they could both just talk about why they kill and actually get along for once now they got each other lool
Then someone sees them and calls it in, once help arrives both of them are dead on the scene and deb and rest is forced to look into it deeper and discover the truth, would have been better ending than cope crap we got lol

Doakes was never meant to last. That's the point. He was only two seasons max because they wanted the cat and mouse drama to fuel the show. Until they knew what they had as the show was very new for this kind of thing. Doakes did not know Dexter was a killer until season 2 & they felt it unrealistic that if he was going into a third season he'd then discover Dexter to be a murderer
If this stretched beyond two or three seasons it would have been repetitive
Doakes was missed but the show didn't really have good villains going forward. Except for the Trinity killer & Miguel
It seems that the other villains were because of the shows declining numbers that they hired billy no name mates
Issac was okay but they kept making him soft as the episodes went on, diluting his first impressions as an intimidating villain to absolute miserable sobre 😂

It's been a long time since I watched Dexter, but I certainly remember there being many off moments, and this scene is a good example. I feel like Dexter would absolutely know the "correct" response to Debra saying "I love you" would be to respond with "I love you" as well. Dexter's very first lines in the show are about how long he has been faking human emotions, and he talks up his incredibly proficient skills in faking them. This does not make any sense for Dexter to awkwardly say "thanks" in response to an "I love you".
Debra would have told him this many times throughout their life, and Dexter would have undoubtedly failed many times to find the correct response until finally landing on what is the correct response to blend in perfectly. The writers are treating this like it's Dexter's first time ever being told "I love you". Harry would have drilled this into him for years so this is so just...off. Like I don't want to say it's bad writing, but it's just, well maybe just not written as well as it could have I'll say.

    • @Local-Vibes4444
      @Local-Vibes4444 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

Even debs "fuck you" and what she understood by it would have been understood by dexter, at times you would think the writers wanted us to think deb and dexter just meet and not grown up together lool, he repeated what she said like he didn't understand what she meant by it when that's how deb talks, dex would have learned this and picked up on the difference especially since his faking would have started with her she is the only of age companion he would have had for a while probably years so it makes no sense that he doesn't understand her lingo either
Like I was saying in other comment the writers dumb down their characters so people could understand them better, they assumed people where so dumb most wouldn't even understand that dexter has a personality disorder yet alone understand it to a deeper level so maybe that's why they dumbed them down like that

The fact that he doesn't know how to "fake" the right response to what she's saying proves to me that he feels the same, but can't articulate it or say it out loud. He's confused not because of a lack of emotion, but because he's actually experiencing them. Him failing to say the words "I love you" out loud is a thing that happens more than once when he's clearly overwhelmed by his emotions - with Rita, with the kids... When he does say it, that's a good way to tell that he IS faking it.

Someone will disagree with what I am about to say but I don't particularly care; dexter kind of was the good guy( in the beginning) and the writers should have kept him that way concerning how he stuck to his father's code of going after bad people only; he could have ignored that and went after anyone he wanted at any time, he could have given in to the temptation of killing the security guard his brother had laid before him at the abandoned hospital or his sister at their childhood home but he chose to follow his father's rules despite his own issues with him because deep down he really didn't want to hurt innocent people and season after season was showing him striving to be a better person and was achieving that slowly especially with lumen in season 5 and brother sam in season 6, Hannah in season 7 Was the worst character ever thought of for her corruptive influence is what brought down Dexter's Integrity and ruined him from being the lovable and honorable character we all know from the books and earlier seasons,
the show's 2 endings was I feel very disappointing because they wrote it and his character all wrong for he wouldn't have given in to his grief over the loss of his sister to where he would abandon his own son, sure he would be at his lowest for a minute but he would pull himself together and remember the promise he made to deb of how he would always be there for harrison no matter what and you can't sit there and convince me that a small town sheriff like his girlfriend angela would be able to bust a notorious killer like Dexter based on circumstantial evidence not to mention the tranquilizer formula is not the same; he never used kenimine on his targets he used M99,
The writers should have continued adapting his story from the novels for they had tons of potential of doing and successfully pulling off a reverse breaking bad and the blacklist with the character, turning him into his very own sophisticated concierge of crime fighting with a vast network of resources at his disposal to help him hunt those that escape justice while keeping him 2 steps ahead of the people he works for in law enforcement who feels and views himself as the "the bad guy" that doesn't believe he can change but doesn't want to disappoint his father, his best friend angel, his wife, kids and sister by giving up trying with case after case and ultimate showdowns with the main antagonist of the season pushing him further and further down the path of being a honorable, righteous and semi-heroic individual with new blood being his swan song where he sacrifices himself to save his son, his son's girlfriend along with his own girlfriend from Kurt Caldwell, his son and the billionaire character they had in there that was serving as a red herring, have it where he had a connection to kurt and was involved somehow in covering up his secret of being the runaway killer and Dexter dying ending their threat once and for all thus earning his redemption which brings his story arc full circle with him ultimately breaking good,
As for doakes the most annoying thing about him was his hypocritical attitude towards dexter when he tried to get him in trouble for just doing his job as a blood spatter specialist after he in an act of revenge shot dead a former death squad operative who was unarmed and tried to cover it up with lies which put his partner angel batista in a very uncomfortable situation of possibly turning him in to be arrested by IA until he was given a pass by the government,
It should have been written and adapted according to the way it worked out in the books where they worked together to take down a cartel leader and doakes was severely maimed by the main antagonist dr danco to where he lost his legs and arms and tongue as a consequence for killing in cold blood that death squad operative who just so happened to be related to the villain, dexter tries to save him despite him knowing his secret but fails, he goes into a comma and dies later on in the 3rd season but Is revered as a hero cop and posthumously awarded a medal for risking his life to bring down dr danko who gets framed by Dexter as the Bay Harbor butcher,
the same scenario can be applied but altered to the character Maria Laguerta, have the consequences of her actions in season 2 befall her in season 7 by having esme come back for revenge on laguerta for ruining her career by using her secret connections to the criminal underworld to frame her and make her look as if she's losing her mind like what laguerta did to her by sleeping with her boyfriend and have it where Debra is the one that tries to save her but fails with season 8 being the final season that deals with the fallout of that event and Dexter being the loving caring brother that he's been towards her trying to help her overcome the grief of laguerta's death all while dealing with the reign of terror from the brain surgeon, I say all of that to say that joe from the show YOU doesn't hold a candle to dexter and that dexter would have that despicable man for breakfast, lunch and dinner to feed the very jackels he came from! 🔥😁😉👍

@@Aaron-zu3xn Harry never killed anyone, he used his hatred from seeing such criminals slip through cracks to train dexter to only kill them since at the time he knew dexter was a serial killer in the making so knew he had to control it somehow or overwise dexter would have just grown out of control and became a killer harry hated, harry technically hated what he was anyway but was wise on the topic enough to know dexter wasn't going to ever change which is why he came up with the code

Sorry but this is shit writing. A whole season of work just for this copout where he acts surprised doesn’t reveal a damn thing? Is this just me?

Deb is amazing. Maybe the only actual "real" character in the whole show

Why do men always hate female characters that aren't just fanservice (like Rita and Lila)?

Brilliant show! However, the names of some characters are pretty weird. Season 3, for example. A black guy named Anton. C'mon, really? I know Anton as a blonde guy who can play the accordion really good. He lives in Tyrol, Austria and he wears a Lederhosen.

I don't understand why you're fixating on a mans name. Are you implying his name is stereotypical?
