It is implied and said by the creators he already knew Dexter was the Butcher. But then Doakes incriminated himself in a clumsy attempt, then he fell for Debra, so he was backed against a corner. Also, Lundy says the one reason for killing was to save an innocents life. Every single victim of the Butcher has escaped judgment, and even Dexter killed a copycat. So, is like te professional curtesy Dexter mentioned

I think the only reason he let Dex slide was because the FBI was on his back to close the case asap, giving him no time to investigate anyone other than Doakes. He'd be risking his job on hunch he knew he could never prove (unless he caught Dexter in the act), and since Dex's targets were worst than him, i guess he tought : " Next time you make a mistake i'll be here to catch you".

Probably one of my favorite things in the entire series is the way Michael C Hall looks at 22:04 after Deb shoots him in the head in his confession fantasy. He just looks so…. Genuinely shocked and saddened to be dead.
Agent Lundy didnt catch on how after Dexter opened the box and how he was ran his fingers through the blood slides like it was his. Dexter knew he got caught but their minds were so focused on doax being the killer they let their guards down.
It was supposed to seem that way to mislead the viewers and make it harder to predict. It was on purpose. But he didn't know, if he did he would have done his job.
It's a sign of well written dialogue. It does multiple things at once, advances the plot, creates tension, abs give us more insight to doakes character.

Two unemotional people being brother and sister working in the same department that's under the suspicion of harboring a psychopath would've looked too absurd on screen. Sometimes when you actually see things playing out they look very differently from how you might've perceived them when the writer was controlling your imagination

Lundy was really dumb and unprofessional to tell Dexter about the cameras. Such investigation methodes shouldn't be mentioned to anybody who isn't directly involved.
If Doakes wasn’t sure he wanted to be a cop anymore, he should’ve finished his interview with Lundy. He should’ve told him his suspicions about Dexter. If he explained his side the right way, including details about the ice truck killer, Dexter lying about rehab, they would’ve had to look into it. I’m sure if they looked into Dexters past they would’ve immediately started connecting the dots. I loved the first 5 seasons but after my most recent rewatch, walking out of that interview is when Doakes made his biggest mistake.

He probably knew Dex was the Butcher- he wouldn't have slept with Deborah otherwise- but once Dex had successfully framed Doakes he conceded. Shouldn’t the slides have been a pretty clear clue to Dexter? Even though they were found in Doakes car, they suspected someone inside. That seems like an obvious clue to the blood guy. I was always confused by it. Also, when Doakes say “Jesus Christ man” It sounded like he really wanted to be wrong about Dexter.
I'm just wondering how they're gonna try to tie the algae to where the killer keeps his boat. It is a harbor after all. Many different boats are at the docks. An one of them could have been in the same area as Dexter. It's possible all those docks have the same algae on them.

I was thinking, the best way for this series to have ended on the original run, was to have Doakes survive but there be a manhunt for him so he flees to Haiti or wherever. He goes in hiding for a few seasons and maybe after season 4-5, he returns to settle the score with Dexter.

Shouldn’t the slides have been a pretty clear clue to Dexter? Even though they were found in Doakes car, they suspected someone inside. That seems like an obvious clue to the blood guy. I was always confused by it.
Also, when Doakes say “Jesus Christ man” It sounded like he really wanted to be wrong about Dexter.

I'm just wondering how they're gonna try to tie the algae to where the killer keeps his boat. It is a harbor after all. Many different boats are at the docks. An one of them could have been in the same area as Dexter. It's possible all those docks have the same algae on them.

I was thinking, the best way for this series to have ended on the original run, was to have Doakes survive but there be a manhunt for him so he flees to Haiti or wherever. He goes in hiding for a few seasons and maybe after season 4-5, he returns to settle the score with Dexter.
