Saying lamborghini is allowed to be loud because its a low volume manufacturer isnt a valid excuse, its still one rule for the rich and another rule for the poor
Low volume cars still have to be type approved (homologated). Lower volume cars such as a one off custom made car goes through IVA test. This test still has the same noise restrictions as type approval. BUT You can have a noisier exhaust based on the age of the car. So if your car is running an exhaust that was legal back in the day, it's still legal now. Your not forced to remove what is legal from new. I have a bike engine car revving to 13,000rpm.. I'm a bit confused about exhaust systems needing to be "EC approved," but to be "EC approved," you need to be in the EU, which we're not. Secondly, how can there be exhaust companies that are allowed to advertise hand making bespoke exhaust systems with their multiple years experience in the industry if it's illegal to not be EC approved? If this is the case, then surely authorities should do more to stop people from being duped into buying illegal items?
The plod in the video literally explains the legislation that states you cannot fit an aftermarket exhaust that is louder than the O. E system and then fits an aftermarket exhaust that is blatently louder on the RS meat wagon? WTF.
The logic outlined in the video is incredibly flawed. Lets imagine a scenario where I have to replace my exhaust for example because of corrosion. If the OEM part is discontinued and no manufacturer makes a pre approved, ECE compliant replacement, then it is physically impossible to ever have a legal car. Rediculous law. By extension, this also dictates that every single exhaust shop in the country that does not use off-the-shelf items, illegal.
@xabre9995 it doesn't negate the fact that if I can't replace my part with OEM or a compliant exhaust that there's no feasible way for me to abide by the law.
Hypothetically you could find yourself with a vehicle that spare parts become hard to source. You are not however being forced to use that vehicle illegally. That is a choice you are making.
@xabre9995 I'm not disputing the legality, I'm calling the laws flawed. What sort of totalitarian state do we live in where we cannot even drive a perfectly safe car that we own because we cannot source a compliant exhaust system
I put a Scorpion cat back exhaust on my MK3 Leon Cupra and it popped and banged like crazy, still on the factory map lol. Can turn it off putting it into comfort mode. Don't think it'll destroy my engine though! Later had my car remapped by one of the top VAG specialists in the country and I asked him about overrun maps and whether they damage anything and he said "no, people who say that don't know anything about engines". If you've ever watched the Officially Gassed channel you might know who I'm talking about.
Yeah the cupra story is just scaremongering. Unfortunately people like me know otherwise, so long as your not going mental turning off engine protections you'll be okay with a fairly aggressive pop and bang remap.
@shamar8529 I personally don't want an aggressive pop and bang remap, it sounds stupid. The oem one that comes on the cupra from factory is more than enough and actually sounds tasteful.
Because, unsurprisingly, to completely overhaul every single piece of EU legislation that we follow in the UK, post-Brexit, would cost an insane amount of time and money. Just because we left the EU doesn’t mean that we have to re-write the entire constitution. Far easier and cheaper for politicians to cherry pick the issues they think will get them re-elected if they carry the flag for.
About 14 years a go we rebuilt a 3rd gen 1991 chevy camaro, tried to get original steel exhaust couldnt get one even in America, only a thing caled a magna flow available. We decided it was to loud so we fitted an extra silencer at the front y pipe which brought it to exceptable level, the fuel system was to high on emissions for the UK so webber built a carb for the engine which brought the car well under the UK emissions level. I asked the mot center about this new law when I took it for its mot in febuary they said it is for modified cars your car is still standard. The magna flow is just a stainless steel version of the original exhaust as for the webber it runs a lot smoother but it lost a lot of power from the holley but it got the emissions spot on.
Why do people want to live in silence. Cars are like music. The uk needs to stop all this bollocks. Why do we just let them give themselves the power to make up any law they want to fuck us over, and everyone just keeps listening and following like sheep and letting this whole country go down the shitter. Especially the car industry. Motortrade is getting worse because of all this emmisions bullshit. 95 percent of the time your car goes wrong it is to do with emmisions controling crap. Without egr and dpf engines go for nillions of miles when oil is changed regular. Even without regular oil changes would still go further than a fully serviced euro 6 car with all that crap.
Cars are like music...yeah, when it's Ford GT and Porsche 917 around a race track. Meanwhile back in the real world with the grown up adults, we have jobs to work and don't need the uneducated criminal underclass racing around in their terrible terrible terrible cars. Meaning don't you get embarrassed? Having a 800db exhaust on a 90hp fiesta at the traffic lights and then an actual 911 that's 100x faster than you pulls up 😂
I lived in America for a half a decade and cats where not required in that state, yet some modified cars still had them so that that the exhaust wouldn't sting noses or smell funky. It's something like 3% of all cars had their cats removed, some percentage got stolen and never replaced and everyone else, the 'normies' if the mechanic tells them they need a new cat, they just get it done and keep the car factory. Almost as if we don't need mandatory cat converters at all because most people will never take them off and those that do are such a small percentage that they're not going to turn cities into eye burning hydrocarbon fog clouds.
I think its great to educate everyone on this topic with this video, but there are a few things that dont make a lot of sense. You have a segment talking about how pop and bang tunes can cause detonation, and how that ruins engines. However, the RS has been tuned to have bop and bangs, as you would definately give it a new tune after fitting a fully different downpipe/cat/exhaust given its a turbo car. Whats the point of saying dont get a pop and bang tune, and then getting one yourself? Also, when mentioning the seat with detonation related engine wear, i dont think you can just say its due to the pop and bang tune, i would argue its most likely the tune as a whole not being suitable to prevent knock, in part due to elevated temperatures. But you can’t look at detonation on an engine and say ahhh yes thats because of a pop and bang tune.
The Leon story was such bullsh**. I have a cupra 300 and they pop and bang from the factory fairly loud even with the stock exhaust system on. They sound mental with an aftermarket exhaust even without a pop and bang remap. Pop and bangs don't cause any damage at all so long as the tuner isn't going crazy and turning off engine protections in the ecu.
Pops and bangs are the result of unignihted fuel in the exhaust that catches fire. Not in the sylinder. Btw they wouldn’t make an engine that isn’t supposed to withstand high pressure and explosions.
They were an invention from rallying where you deliberately sent unburnt fuel into the exhaust to ignite so that the turbo spun up. I believe they also used the spark to ignite the mixture in the exhaust cycle on a gear change. But you never get anything for free. Motor manufacturers put a hell of a lot of work into making cars reliable and a lot of these aftermarket mods actually make cars slower or remove built in safety features which are there for longevity.
The precedent set as a result of this is frankly frightening. The vast majority of factory exhaust systems fitted to cars of all types and pricepoints do *not* have EC markings on them and this includes the catalysts fitted to them. The vast majority of police officers are not clued up on cars. The DVSA have effectively put the power to prosecute and profiteer off the motorist entirely into their domain and manipulated it in such a way that if you are in breach or in compliance to the precedents they themselves have set is entirely within the purview of themselves or a *very* fallable(and proven biased) human being wearing a uniform and badge. I understand the purpose of this video is to inform, not endorse but I echo the sentiments of every other commenter here suggesting this is a massive over-reach. Legal ramifications aside we used to be a nation of engineering prowess and innovation. No shed built company is going to build up the scratch to pass EC approval without first selling units. How in the world is someone supposed to get their foot in the door?! Are we building a monopoly here or are we building cars?!
Because they don’t want that. We have to be controlled. No car, no property (owned), C40 living environment….this is nothing when you look into the bigger picture(s).
@gj3281 An officer at the side of the road won't know and often won't fact check if a system has been type approved lol They look for markings on the components, sometimes not even that
People abused the privilege. And cats are a good thing. Cars without them stink and sound w**k. Pops and bangs are absolutely horrendous. And I'm a petrol head and performance car enthusiast.
The guy talking about pop & bang maps is right about them causing engines to deterioate quicker. I had a friend with an older Skyline who had a hard cut limiter and it was same concept with dumping fuel in but eventually all the detonation cracked a valve. Some of the emissions stuff on older cars, particulary diesels is pretty silly. Example: You have an older diesel with a cat, but no DPF. Cat is clogged up, and doesn't work any more but passes the MOT as the only test is to ensure it's visually present, since it doesn't impact the diesels emissions test in any way. Same with EGR
So an over aggressive hard cut limiter did the damage then? Just think of all the cars that come from the factory today with "pop and bang" programmed into the overrun. People need to realise if you don't go crazy with the bangs on overrun it won't damage anything. It's scaremongering.
@@filmboy18 If its overly aggressive it will damage it quickly. If it isn't it will damage it slower. No pops and bangs is better for the engine's longevity than with it.
I just ordered a milltek ec approved exhaust and it was handy to check this video to verify the one I received was approved. I got the correct one as it had the e stamps which puts me at ease before I schedule it in with the TUV in Germany to be fitted / registered as it will be difficult enough getting it sorted while not speaking German.
They dont want you driving or owning nothing. Noise cameras and ULEZ. Yet a Porsche 911 idles at over 80db and pops via factory map. Some cars do pop naturally from factory. But the excess popping and banging is and should be illegal. In UK you can get traffic cops looking under the bonnet. 😂...
Mate, I totally get what you're saying, but what Porsche 911 idles at 80dB+?? These newer gen 992s are being ridiculed for sounding about as loud a vacuum cleaner, even at full chat. How are they possibly idling that loud?
I advise motorcycle users to fit loud exhausts on their bikes as it's much safer. So many times I've had cars cut me off because they didn't know I was there but as soon as I fitted a loud exhaust it's been easier for cars to notice me and I've never had an issue since. If the government cared about motorcycle safety they should allow louder exhausts for motorcycles.
Ok ok so yeah I get it. However I just have one question? Why? Why does it matter what we have fitted to OUR cars. Is it just another thing that helps the police generate money? Is it just another thing that puts another person in a job. Like it makes no sense. Can't this extra police officer actually do a constructive job like stop a crime or contribute to another case. Having a louder than factory exhaust isn't the end of the world is it. I do think the laws need to change about this because its just not necessary to stop this type of thing.
sorry not how the law works.. if it passed the test its legal for a year..... i dont care about germanys laws we didnt fight two wars to do what they say...
Interesting fact - "pops and bangs" actually came from the rally world and what is was was a device that reduced the amount of lag on turbo charged car by allowing small amounts of fuel to be burnt off throttle so there was extra exhaust gas to keep the turbo spinning longer and therefore reduce the spool up time. Rally cars had to be able to turn it off when not on a stage. Of course the boy racer brigade started copying on their 1.2 corsas and the rest is history
Anti lag is way way way more aggressive than your average pop and bang remap. With real anti lag you find yourself replacing turbos quite often because of well... the excess heat.
@@filmboy18 I get that - I compete. Im just saying thats where the craze started. Originally it served a real person for teams that had stupid amounts of money and rebuilt the engines very frequently. Then what happened is bill in his 1.2 Nova decided he wanted to sound like that because it was "cool". And a new remap was born to annoy people the world over (and for those watching that did it to their road cars - it doesnt make you faster - just annoying)
Aftermarket exhausts should never be about sound. They should maintain the number of silencers that the OEM used or more if the system is louder than original. All an aftermarket exhaust system needs to do is have straight through low restriction to flow, and have a bore size big enough to support the power level that an engine is making.
I removed my egr valve which your not allowed to do but I get better mpg so sounds like they want us too spend more on fuel total scam by the government
I would like to thank Owen for coming to st Austell college today with the RS to give a talk about road safety. He is an awesome and kind gentleman and if anyone happened to come across him or get pulled over by him be polite.
What about pre-EC cars? Cars manufactured prior to the existence of the EC/EU. Obviously, none of the original parts are E marked so what rules apply in that case?
Most of these things are illegal, but it will never stop people modifying or adapting their cars, it’s all about personalising them to their own tastes! Same with motorcycles and loud exhausts!!
P&B maps can have benefits, if done extremely well. Small burbles can actually keep your turbo spinning and allow for better pressure after a shift. Just depends on how much extra fuel is burning, and from there you can manage engine damage. The massive pops and bangs are rediculous. There's no point.
So as a mechanic I can confirm that pop and bang tunes do seriously wear your engine, it’s for that reason I don’t recommend it. However as a libertarian I think that if you want to do that you should be within your rights to as it is your property. I will note to people who aren’t overly familiar with the technical aspect of cars, actual naturally occurring pops and bangs are not harmful to the engine for reasons I won’t explain at risk of over complicating it. It’s only the artificial ones that are intentionally added to make a low powered car sound more powerful.
This is just my penny's worth, I love the sound of pop & bang exhaust pipes at the race track, that's way i go to them. I do not want to hear the same noise two streets over from me, when some D%!K wants to show off at 10pm. If you want a race car use it on a race track. I have modified vehicles in my youth. That Fuzz has not looked twice at that vehicle.
Almost ever car I’ve owned has had a loud exhaust, mostly de-cat. Filth never bothered me and never had an issue with an mot. Do what you want, it’s only an exhaust.
Used to have a cat back straight piped fiesta zetec as my first car, police used to pull me over and check my car and then tell me it’s legal and let me go. Never got any tickets for it, wouldn’t pass a mot though so did have to swap it out for my stock exhaust and swapped it back after.
@@ryanwilkins3206 Mot does measure for noise. It failed its mot a few months before I traded it in. Failed for a few things including the exhaust. It’s section 8.1. noise “Exhaust noise from the vehicle must not be unreasonably above the noise level you’d expect from a similar vehicle with a standard silencer in average condition.” Mine failed on section 8.1.1.(a) “Exhaust noise levels in excess of those permitted.” Which is a major defect. Had to put the old back box on but didn’t have to put the mid section silencer for it to pass. Just removed it again after it passed the mot.
@@poityninethat’s really wooly and subjective because there is no definition of what is excessive. My GT86 passed its MOT yesterday with flying colours and she is a lot louder than stock, think she comes in at 92db which is about 15db louder than stock 🤣

So in summary the previous Scoprion exhaust fitted to the focus wasn’t road legal… proof even the police struggle to understand the law! Scorpion specifically state on their website that their exhausts are NOT EC approved. However also a bit misleading, will an EC approved exhaust be 100% legal, of course. If an exhaust isn’t EC approved does it mean it isn’t road legal, not necessarily. If I get a custom exhaust made to the exact same spec as an EC approved one then it’s going to be compliant as it won’t be any louder than the stock system. All in all great video and super helpful.
Ahh good! I’m glad that they went to the most expensive bespoke exhaust manufacturer to the rescue…. Also there’s a big difference between a “pop and bang” map and a well tuned car. Mine will crackle and pop a little on downshift , but it’s a built motor and it’s turbocharged which as any petrolhead knows will give you extra fuel in the exhaust manifold
The RS is absolutely louder than it was originally, and even has a hint of pops as it’s obviously been retuned to match the new setup. Imagine someone who is touching cars for a living thinking that a pop and bang remap causes “detonations in the cylinder”. Like what? Absolute madness. You really ought to have drawn a distinction between performance cars like the M4, 911, RS6, et al who pop and burble on over runs from the factory and are absolutely type legal vs whatever monstrosity that backfiring flaming crapbox was supposed to be…
You would have to inject a hell a lot of fuel to even think about causing bore wash. You aint getting bore wash from a pop and bang remap. Who's even told you that.
Igniting fuel in the chamber . Thats what combustion is . No extra harm comes from a pop n bang map. Bouncing it off the limiter is what causes problems
Hiya, I'm not into modifying my car, I'm the wrong side of 50 for that lol, but having just watched this video, could you please tell me out of curiosity, whether these motorbikes that have had modifications made to their exhausts are likely to be legal or not, because some of them are really quite loud. Regards Jessica.
It’s always the anti pop and bang brigade that don’t actually know how it works. Nothing to do with adding fuel and detonation, it’s simply pulling timing which will allow unburdened fuel through to the exhaust. Yes it’s a waste of fuel but no more is being added, it’s just the stuff going through isn’t all being converted into bang (power)
The exact same scenario happens on cars with dual clutch gearboxes, It retards ignition timing (while still injecting fuel) to allow a seamless shift. These people just don't have any idea how things work. They're just scaremongering the uninformed.
All mods will soon have to be logged with the DVLA. The DVLA will have the right to inspect any car. If all mods have not been logged then it will be a £500 fine for each mod. Any mods that are illegal will be identified and the car banned from the road and not allowed back on until the car is legal. If they link the data to insurance records then the insurance company will either increase your premiums for the undeclared legal mods, or cancel your insurance because of the illegal ones. They will look for reg plates, tyres, wheel arches, DPF's, EGR's, exhausts, silencers, tinting, and anything else that was not standard when the car was new. It is going to get very expensive for some owners, and many cars will become worthless.
If I understood correctly, if the car is legally registered in my country, according to some convention, I shouldn't have any problems with your police, but still there are more and more problems, because it is not acceptable for the car to be modified? Here I am mainly thinking of the Balkan countries, since in most of them modification is not a problem. Please answer this question.

Secondly, how can there be exhaust companies that are allowed to advertise hand making bespoke exhaust systems with their multiple years experience in the industry if it's illegal to not be EC approved? If this is the case, then surely authorities should do more to stop people from being duped into buying illegal items?

Yeah that was definitely louder than the factory exhaust 😂
I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought that
Go and catch some criminals!
It's not illegal to fit or sell an aftermarket non-compliant exhaust to your car. It's illegal to use them on the road.
@xabre9995 it doesn't negate the fact that if I can't replace my part with OEM or a compliant exhaust that there's no feasible way for me to abide by the law.
You're arguing a hypothetical as a fact.
Pop and bang sounds so sh1te.
Sounds mint apart from the pop and bang
I put a Scorpion cat back exhaust on my MK3 Leon Cupra and it popped and banged like crazy, still on the factory map lol. Can turn it off putting it into comfort mode. Don't think it'll destroy my engine though!
Later had my car remapped by one of the top VAG specialists in the country and I asked him about overrun maps and whether they damage anything and he said "no, people who say that don't know anything about engines".
If you've ever watched the Officially Gassed channel you might know who I'm talking about.

Honest question. Why do we have to have EC approved systems, if following Brexit, we are no longer an EU country?
Because, unsurprisingly, to completely overhaul every single piece of EU legislation that we follow in the UK, post-Brexit, would cost an insane amount of time and money. Just because we left the EU doesn’t mean that we have to re-write the entire constitution. Far easier and cheaper for politicians to cherry pick the issues they think will get them re-elected if they carry the flag for.
@rb-1236 or more simply, we adopted all the EU standards on leaving the EU to avoid rewriting everything from scratch in a few weeks!
Common but incorrect thought, these are E (European) regs not EU regs. We left the EU (European Union) we did not leave Europe.
Having a 800db exhaust on a 90hp fiesta at the traffic lights and then an actual 911 that's 100x faster than you pulls up 😂
Well obviously decats are illegal.... Do I have decats? Yes. Am I keeping them? Also yes 😂
They’re type approved by default out of the factory. The car has to be to be sold…

The MOT should flag everything up. The MOT should determine if a car is legal otherwise it’s totally pointless.

Good to finally know!
So a mot is a load of crap on emissions, so why do you bother?
Aftermarket exhausts should never be about sound. They should maintain the number of silencers that the OEM used or more if the system is louder than original. All an aftermarket exhaust system needs to do is have straight through low restriction to flow, and have a bore size big enough to support the power level that an engine is making.

Never got any tickets for it, wouldn’t pass a mot though so did have to swap it out for my stock exhaust and swapped it back after.
if it was cat back why wouldn't it have passed an MOT? MOT doesn't measure for noise yet.

Long story short yes.
Everyday is risky if some Blue smurf will stop you for modified exhaust.
The RS is absolutely louder than it was originally, and even has a hint of pops as it’s obviously been retuned to match the new setup.
Imagine someone who is touching cars for a living thinking that a pop and bang remap causes “detonations in the cylinder”. Like what? Absolute madness.
You really ought to have drawn a distinction between performance cars like the M4, 911, RS6, et al who pop and burble on over runs from the factory and are absolutely type legal vs whatever monstrosity that backfiring flaming crapbox was supposed to be…
Biggest issue with the EC approved sports cats is they are 3 x the cost and a decent sports cat isn’t exactly cheap
Pops and bangs cause bore wash too. Another factor in engines going bang.
You would have to inject a hell a lot of fuel to even think about causing bore wash. You aint getting bore wash from a pop and bang remap. Who's even told you that.

They're just scaremongering the uninformed.
the thing is with the pop and bang maps... just run a N/A engine and don't compensate for displacement you don't have... simple.
