It's a great day for the world. Thank you America if you guys can get the ball rolling then the rest of the world can return to sanity as well. It's no picnic out here with all the new world authorities trying to control every single aspect of life.
I'm a retired radio/TV/media guy. Over 40 years and let me just say you're an absolute natural, great, loveable sort, etc. No wonder you have a 6 million+ audience. In fact, I send your particularly good vids to former colleagues around the world with the subject saying "check out this guy he'll blow your mind."
He actually used to make regular appearances on a morning show, (I believe CBS?), doing a car segment similar to this, just prettied up for a TV production.😊
As a retired mechanic, I can testify to the dismal state of my former profession. I'd estimate that 80% of the mechanics now working, are both dishonest and incompetent. Scotty is one of the few who bucks that tread. He's an old school guy. Great skills, and solid ethics. If you find a mechanic like Scotty, be thankful, and stay loyal to him or her.
This is another industry destroyed by middle men. Autoshops now a days have service managers and owners who take all the profit from a job and leave the average technician crumbs for their work. This trend of middlemen (aka Contractors) taking all the money from those who actually do the work is destroying industries in the US left and right. Look what brokers have done to trucker salaries, or benefit managers done to pharmacist salaries, or Contractors done to electrician salaries. The list goes on and on.
I agree with you 100%. Now most the mechanics are salesmen trying to scam people because they get commission. There are a few good ones still left and if you are fortunate to find one treat them like Gold because they are life savers.
@@Joshgats20 I was fortunate to be able to train several apprentices through the years. I spent alot of time encouraging them to develop not just a good work ethic but to adopt a standard of quality that surpasses what their managers wanted. Have a question about this, why would the mechanic tell you the truth? Sure it's not a guarantee that you will take the car to them to fix, But if they think you picked them there's a high chance you will take it to them.
@@Sesshomaru474 An independent mechanic is paid to diagnose the vehicle. He is staking his reputation on whatever he concludes. A trustworthy mechanic can get a lifetime of repeat business from helping out car buyers like this and really, for new vehicles, between a visual inspection and reading codes, there's not much to it.
The best mechanic I ever knew was old enough to be my grandfather. He could troubleshoot an engine by listening to it idle--yes--even the computerized kind with two dozen sensors. He worked fast & cheap. This was important to me as I was a poor, starving newlywed with no "spare" vehicle to get me to work. My parent's van broke down once while they were visiting me. When I told him they were stranded out-of-towners he put them at the front of the line and replaced their broken motor mount before COB. He's retired and probably dead now. I've never found another one like him.
People are easily conned. Millions of Americans recently voted for a DEI appointed candidate. This Scotty fellow doesn't know half the stuff he spews while flailing his arms around like some mental patient. Telling people to "go demand your money back" most states used cars are sold as is, where is.
My issue with Subaru isn't head gaskets - they've largely fixed that problem and it never effected their 6 cylinder engines in the first place. It's their almost total migration to CVT transmissions. That's a dealbreaker.
Even when they used to offer a manual transmission, it was only available for certain models and in limited trim levels. They are little gems if you can find one, but its like find a needle in a haystack.
I had a 1999Outback. I babied it but @ 115,000 easy miles it lost a head gasket. Remembered the joy that Subies have 2 engine banks…2 head gaskets. Feel the love.
The engine of my Subaru was overheating and the coolant was boiling over. Scotty cooled the engine down to normal temperature by waving his hands and arms over it for 5 minutes and sent me on my way. Thanks Scotty.
New Hampshire has several laws and requirements for buying and selling used cars, including sellers must certify that the vehicle passed inspection or provide a written statement that it did not if the vehicle did not pass the seller must provide a list of problems that need to be fixed. As well as other stipulations on used cars in New Hampshire.
When I was a kid my uncle did that on his 78 Firebird and ended up with 3rd degree burns all over his back and arms. Several procedures and a long recovery later he was ok but it taught me at an early age to never mess with the radiator cap when the engine is hot.
I worked at a Subaru dealership. Yes they are great in the snow. Yes they have very loyal customers. But the cars have lots of serious issues like oil consumption, bad transmissions, bad head gaskets, serious rust. Maybe they are good to lease but I wouldn’t buy one.
Exactly fg had a 2014... was her winter only car.... well it only did 85k. 3 cvts in it.... under warenty... totally rusted out sub frame, exaust replaced cat back.. first one rusted out. 2 wheel bearings.
Scotty has covered it before, but here in Texas we are seeing cars from the hurricane (flood) areas. Buyer beware, electrical problems and mold will be expensive repairs.
2nd owner of my 30 year old Ciera 3.1. Little old lady owned it first, garaged it, drove it 34K in 12 years, took meticulous and paperwork backed service done, especially oil changes every 3K. Dad followed that same routine for years before he retired and handed it over to me. Point is, meticulous care has kept it going. Take care of it from day one.
Just don't buy a used car from a used car lot they're just junk if you got a car keep it and fix it because I was told from my mechanic that if you keep fixing your car it could last a long time then buy somebody else's problem thanks for sharing this TH-cam video I really appreciate it you have a blessed day from Terry
You can get a good deal if you know what you're doing. If you're slow, and don't own a scan tool or set of sockets, yeah stick to getting ripped off by the AutoNations of the world.
I had a 2001 Dodge Dakota 4.7l V8 that developed a haed gasket leak at 40K miles. Used the most expensive head gasket sealer that I could find. It worked. Drove the truck for another 16 years.
Air cooled boxer engines are great. Water cooled ones like what Subaru puts out are too complex and hence increased complexity brings a higher likelihood of problems. You can't beat a simple inline 4 like what's in a Toyota Corolla for durability and trouble free motoring.
I have read the head gasket issues were fixed over 10 year ago. I own a Subaru with about 68,000 miles, a 2014 BRZ. No issues. Thanks Scotty. You tell it like it is.
some used car lots esp here in OK, they said when the car gets out of the lot, you cannot return it. And when I got ripped off buying my first used car (check engine light come on my way home from car lot), they just told me they will try to fix it but ended up not fixing it really. I hope I have known scotty before.
Look into his state's lemon law and get the state bbb involved and call the local cable tv News channel consumer advocate interview about the lemon sold to you.
My mechanic sometimes does work for used car lots in the neighborhood. The always tell him just to the bare minimum in any repairs so they can get it back on the lot and get it sold.
I really enjoy how scotty can explain this stuff in an entertaining and easy to understand way. I am looking to get into auto mechanics for a career. I thought I might get some knowledge from yt before heading to school for it. By far this is my favorite auto mechanics channel.
I've only used this reference to one other channel (Practical Engineering): "The WORLD ought to see these videos." You are INCREDIBLY VALUABLE & appreciated.
I purchased my used car (2000 Ford Taurus - DOHC engine) from the original owner who have all the service records. I would not buy a used car from a dealer. Owned for two years - car runs great.
Scotty, you are the best! Your videos always have so much excellent useful information, and I know that you have saved so many countless numbers of people a lot of grief with their vehicles. I'm a huge fan of yours, and I will continue to watch your incredibly helpful videos! Thank you!
We had a 2015 Forrester that had problems. It had so many issues that the stealership couldn't find or diagnose them so they called their regional Subaru Whisperer. It was a 6 week process that allowed us to drive nearly every Subaru in the line as a loaner. We ended up getting a Outback and no problems since.
OLD Subaru engines did have a problem with blowing head gaskets. Some of the E series engines did have head gasket problems, specifically the EJ25D, EJ251, and the EJ253. The F series engines which replaced the E series engines in 2013, DO NOT have a head gasket problem. If your Subaru engine has an aluminum timing cover, it is an F series engine and should not have a head gasket problem.
In 2007, when our daughter graduated high school we bought her a 1998 Toyota 4RNR from a Toyota dealer we’ve done business with for decades. She and her husband drove it for years. About 5 years ago they gave to her father-in-law who uses it as his daily driver. Our son drives a 1987 4RNR that his aunt bought new. All of these vehicles are well maintained.
Exactly the same thing happened to my bro, 2010 Forester turbo, used car lot, eventually they did the right thing and fixed the head gasket but it shouldn’t have happened to begin with. Had 140k he drove it for 10k and sold it got 90% of his money back👍
I was at a inspection station and a two year Subaru failed emissions, the guy was so pissed he floored it and bounced off every curb on the lot broke a wheel and flattened 3tires I just drove around him when I was leaving with my passed 1978 olds delta😉
Here in Kentucky, some used car dealers put a notice on their used cars that says, "No Warranty, Sold as is.." Stay away from any car that has that notice on it. Many of their cars are purchased by the dealer at car auctions, some of the auctions are even out of state, so they have to drive them a long way to get them back to their car lot. During that journey, they are going to find out things that are wrong with the vehicle, and try to pass those problems on to a consumer, or take it back to the auction to sucker another used car dealer.
A used car dealer dose not have to post that. Used car is always sold as is. The car doesn’t even have to start or make it off the lot. Once you sign the paperwork it’s your problem
I bought a coolant kit and took it to a dealership to test the head gasket. The Dealership told me I couldnt do that. I told them I was not interested in the vehicle at that point. As you said, a Subaru is a great car, until the head gasket goes.
I have a 2013 Subaru Impreza that has never skipped a beat. If you do a Google Search you can easily find the specific engines of specific years that would blow head gaskets.
All the old ones blow around 180,000 to 200,000 miles, my 2001 Outback overheats if above 100F outside but otherwise fine, no consumption yet, 189K My 2000 Forester died after 190K. Still better engine that the current leaky F engine.
@@Dankcatvacs It has already given me 12 years of problem free driving. The head gasket has never blown and again as long as you stay away from certain engines in certain years, that Subaru engine will run a long time.
Im driving a resurrected 06 envoy. I bought from a old friend. Over heating issue.. he had new head gaskets and water pump. I replaced radiator and clutch fan.. coolant temp sensor.. thermostat. Burped the system a few times. No more over heating. Stays around 200 degrees
If they ever fix the engines I’d get one in heartbeat because they drive sooo well! My brother pulled his engine 9 times.. had issues with junkyard engines.. issues with hiring mechanics to do the timing belts and wiring and rebuilding… He’s lucky he had own business right out of HS.
@@joojoojeejee6058 awesome catch!! He got prestige, wealth and status that negates age and looks on a man unlike your useless azz that would have to pay to play.
Didn't Subaru end up with lawsuits for selling junk cars? The worst years for the model were as follows. 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2003, 2010, 2011, 2014. Avoid !
I did 11 months as a mechanic in NYC. Such a dirty business made me hate working for shops. Became a truck driver instead. Best and easiest transition ever.
My car is a Fiat Panda with Fire engine (the engine is called fire, that's the clue here). One day starts to make funny noises, check engine pops up, it stop. The mechanic showed the water pump , the rotor was gone, it disintegrated in a million pieces and clogged my radiator. Fun day.
I have never seen this channel, before, as far as I know. Started watching the video, didn't care about the content but watched for several minutes just because it was entertaining to see what it would be like if Joe Peschi had a role as a mechanic. 😊 The video deserves a thumbs up just for that.
Great Info. Thank you. I learned something new today. I'm familiar with a few Blown Head Gasket symptoms. But I didn't know about the Coolant temperature cooling down overnight & check the next day if Pressure exists when removing the cap. That's a new one on me. Thanks again.
The title is a joke btw, it’s a great day for America!

You have to make friends with one.
You have a tremendous sense of humor. Almost had me on that one.

But buying from a private sale can be dangerous even if it already has a current inspection sticker on it.
Please tell people not to open coolant cap when car is hot. Don’t ask how I know it 😂
Also don't push in spark plug wires on a running engine, and watch out for fan blades, ask how I know
Reading "don't ask me how I know", I'm picturing the Father Spiletto from "The Omen".

When I was a kid my uncle did that on his 78 Firebird and ended up with 3rd degree burns all over his back and arms. Several procedures and a long recovery later he was ok but it taught me at an early age to never mess with the radiator cap when the engine is hot.
You only do it once.
1) check the oil - color/viscosity.
2) check the coolant
I worked at a Subaru dealership. Yes they are great in the snow. Yes they have very loyal customers. But the cars have lots of serious issues like oil consumption, bad transmissions, bad head gaskets, serious rust. Maybe they are good to lease but I wouldn’t buy one.
Subarus are one car that you either love or hate.

Air cooled boxer engines are great. Water cooled ones like what Subaru puts out are too complex and hence increased complexity brings a higher likelihood of problems. You can't beat a simple inline 4 like what's in a Toyota Corolla for durability and trouble free motoring.

You might want to do some reading on Subaru owners forums because the head gaskets are still very much an issue. Especially, with boosted engines.

some used car lots esp here in OK, they said when the car gets out of the lot, you cannot return it.

Especially if if the vehicle was bought from Florida, Georgia, the Carolinas, or any place where they have hurricanes
A used car dealer dose not have to post that. Used car is always sold as is. The car doesn’t even have to start or make it off the lot. Once you sign the paperwork it’s your problem
@@patrick_9393 If you do a car fax and it has mulitple owners in a short period of time, run.
They also get towed, so it's even worse
The thing with these lots, they run a scanner, pull all those codes, clear them and pop it on the lot! Roll the dice if you’re willing!
Back when I was young and poor, I learned the hard way that used car lots sell absolute junkers.
I bought a coolant kit and took it to a dealership to test the head gasket. The Dealership told me I couldnt do that. I told them I was not interested in the vehicle at that point. As you said, a Subaru is a great car, until the head gasket goes.
With a Honda or Toyota if you blow a head gasket you can replace the gasket without pulling the engine
