    Hey Bruce.. First let me say I hope you and your family are staying safe and healthy through this health crisis, 2nd let me say thanks for always answering my questions and comments. It means the world.. I am new to this in fact because of you I have fixed my 3rd lawn mower ever yesterday and my 2nd blower (all this month while on self quarantine) I learn so much from you. My question is, why dont more people use gasket maker in a tube.. I have a tube for cars, and it seems to me it would be cheaper and easier especially on a warped part instead of using 2 gaskets.. I have not tried it yet because i have seen no videos from you using it and I am following your expertise .. so let me know. I have a briggs now that surges and while watching this video it reminded me that I saw no gasket at all between the filter houseing with the primer and the carb.. which is probably why its surging.. take care

      These gaskets have a very small hole to let in air for priming, which is why I buy them and for me i do this once a week. Making one would be fun. Make a video. I would watch.

    Good fix. For an air leak like this I would have used a none hardening gas resistant gasket sealant. Better known as #2 gasket sealant. If you've never used it, it can be a lifesaver and money saver. I've patched hundreds of split intake-carb gaskets with it. It's not an rtv or a stand alone gasket maker, but a sealant. It stays pliable for years and easy comes off with the gasket if you need to do work down the road.

      sixtyfiveford, that answers my question. I have something called Honda Bond, it's extremely expensive but I have a tube left over from a project and the stuff is amazing. It would be perfect for something like this. I use it whenever I replace an important gasket on my vehicle just to make sure it seals properly. thanks for the info!

    Thought for a second it was gonna be the air filter, as it started without it on. However, often times they will start up cold with it on, but not want to restart once the engine is hot. Clogged filter acting like a choke on a hot engine doesn't work.
    But you zeroed in on the problem/ problems nicely. Warped assembly and cut in primer bulb. Nice job!!!

    Bruce, I chased that same problem around 2 weeks ago. Did everything you did. Wound up putting a sliver of packing tape over the air passage on the back plate. Works fine with one gasket now. It was a PITA.

      @@BrucesShop I see online I and get a 2 pack for 5.99 OR a 15 pack for $6.99. Looks like having 15 of them is not such a crazy idea, especially since I am now dabbling in the small engine repair hobby. Mrs. Haney told me yesterday "Tom, you don't need 3 lawn mowers". I agreed. She obviously has not been in the garage lately. There are 5 or 6, depending on how you count the parts donor mower. It snowed last night and will snow till 5pm today, so it is about to be Snowblower time!!

    On these briggs engines, I double up the intake gasket from the air intake to the carb. Also check if the plastic intake manifold or pipe is not cracked. Sometimes the pipe looks fine but its not, just replace the pipe if all else fails.

    I had a similar problem on a Kohler Courage engine horizontal engine. I even purchase a new carb off of eBay. . The engine would start and run for a bit and then stall. Restarts were difficult because you needed to pump the primer causing a very rich condition. I still don't exactly understand why this resolved the problem, but the hose from the primer bulb was kinked. I replaced it and it runs fine.
    Cracked primer bulbs are common on Toro single stage snow blowers. Keep a couple of spares "in stock" :) !

    A good lesson for sure, one I am constantly relearning....Never overlook the simple stuff...I have noticed that the air box gasket must be in good condition on these models, it is an integral part of the primer system. A broken gasket will cause the primer not to work due to the air leak. I guess the split primer button will cause a similar problem....Will have to look closer at the plastic cover for warpage issues...

    Bruce here is a hint on those gaskets. When you rebuild on with a choke on it it doesn't need that gasket, there is another one in the kit that is used. That way you can put the primer gasket in a parts tray for later on when you need a free one...........

    I noticed that's a Craftsman mower. I have a 1996 MTD Quantum XM push mower with a 5.5 HP Briggs & Stratton engine. Your neighbor's engine and mine appear to be nearly identical. The carb, fuel tank, fuel hose, air filter, linkage, everything i could see are identical to mine except the name on the face plate. Had the problem been spark related, I'm going to go out on a limb here, I will guess that your coil may have had electronic ignition (no points or condensor under the flywheel, because the electronic ignition timing parts are molded into the newer style ignition coil "module"). The kill switch is located near the flywheel brake cable linkage, rather than near the throttle valve control linkage found on most "old school" Briggs engines.

    If the mower will run and then die you can rule out the primer by covering it. If you cover the primer with your hand and it does not die that would indicate a leak at the primer.

That's all I film with now, and although I've been suffering from growing pains with the microphone fiasco (mainly MY fault), I love the versatility, compactness and video quality. Hello Bruce, I have the identical mower that has run like a champ for years. Used it a couple of times this spring and then noticed tge fuel line was cracked and decided to replace it. Did that and have never been able to start it again. I've rebuilt the car and am satisfied its getting gas but dosen't seem to have spark. I usually download the vids and then watch, but in this case I had to come back for the comments. I am soooo glad you posted this video. So i felt like the end was up in the air to the real problem. Do you think it was the primer bulb itself, or do you feel like the suction passageway (where you put the double gasket) was also warped enough on the old intake was enough to hinder the suction?

    • @BrucesShop
      @BrucesShop  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well there ended up being 2 problems. The plastic housing was warped and the primer bulb was cracked. I had another housing in the shed so I changed that to. Not everybody has the luxury to go get a different filter housing. Thanks for watching.

  • @greensfarmland
    @greensfarmland 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Interesting. Do you think adding a second gasket could be a warped air cleaner housing? Speaking in regards to other videos I watched that had been repaired with two gaskets.
    Still a good fix, but could it be that at some point a new or better air filter housing would be needed in case it was to warp further?
    Just wondering if this would be something to tell the customer for if it does it again they could be mentally prepared.
    Something like hey it's fixed, but the problem could happen again in case the housing continues to warp. But don't worry not a huge deal, not a ton of money to fix.
    If you want it fixed I will get the part and fix it, otherwise it's fine right now. So get your lawn mowed before I call the city.
    Just kidding.
    Thanks for your videos so helpful to me.

    • @BrucesShop
      @BrucesShop  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    • @greensfarmland
      @greensfarmland 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@BrucesShop yeah, so based on this video I was thinking it might not be the gaskets, but the housing.
      Being that close to the engine, and being a lower grade of plasic.
      I recently retired, and have just picked up the hobby to fix mowers to keep my mind, and body active, along with providing some energy to the community.
      The only Briggs that I have gotten this far is the ones without the primer bulb.

      If the bossing is warped, doubling up on the gasket may work. For the cost it might be worth a try. Personally I shy away from this method, but ymmv.

      OK there are so many different models. I have 2 here. They are hard to find the numbers on. Here are some but i think you should first make sure the motor is a Briggs and Stratton 6HP or what ever and google "carb for 6HP Briggs and Stratton mower motor" #'s are 2856 or 6150. But they don't look right so just google that. Here is one such search

    Do you find that if the square cut O-ring between the bowl and the carb housing swells when you soak it in car cleaner ?
    I too have found that there is 2 different OD of fuel line. The thicker is for automotive use and the thinner for small engines.

    I have a lawnmower with a Briggs and Stratton engine that sometimes does not want to pick up the gas after it is primed several times. When I let the engine run for about a minute and shut it off it sometimes has a lot of trouble picking up the gas but sometimes it does not. The carburetor has been cleaned, air filter is clean, fuel line is intact with no blockage. What would the problem be?

    • @BrucesShop
      @BrucesShop  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sounds like a vacuum problem to me. Check the plastic intake tube and the seal at the back of the carb. Carefully spray some carb cleaner on the cab and intake connections. If the rpm changes you have an intake leak. Be careful. Do so at your own risk. Did you check the holes in the bolt---jet??

    • @brianmott728
      @brianmott728 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes I cleaned the carburetor and checked the jets in the blot for the float bowl and everything is clean. The o-ring behind the carburetor is intact and the intake tube is tight on the engine.
