    Mower starts and then dies. A loose mounting plate for the carb is the culprit. Loctite was the solution in this case.

    I've driven myself crazy for most of the evening trying to figure out what's wrong with mine. . . and combined with little to no knowledge of small engines, it's been a lot of teaching myself what different parts are and do while also trying to troubleshoot. Your video not only was the solution for my problem, you explained it clearly and simply and definitely gave me the the confidence to DIY the job myself. Thank you!

    1:51 One tip: before pulling out the filler tube, check the base for built up crud that accumulates around the tube from spilled oil mixed with lawn clippings and dust. It's very easy for that crud to fall straight into the oil pan when you lift up the tube. Nice video and thanks for posting.

    Thorough presentation. Thanks. Saw a thing I missed in going through my mower an hour ago. Back to the garage to disassemble again and go through the carb more thoroughly. Btw...I only use premium fuel, 93 octane in all gas engines here, as recommended by my repair shop...since using it, for over 10 years, my former bi-annual trips to the repair shop have stopped! I don't run engines dry or drain the fuel in the Autumn, typically October. My engines start up fine each year in April.

      Small engine,(mower,) needs 3 things to run
      (In no particular order)
      - Fuel
      - Spark
      - Air
      Check these
      Majority of the problem(s) will be one (or more) of these
      Fuel seems to be the most frequent

    Thanks for sharing. I have the exact same mower. I found it on the trash a few years ago & the only thing wrong with it was the shut-off switch. I fixed it with a wire tie. This mower is a beast & can cut down 6 inch tall grass no problem. I just recently found another similar Craftsman mower on the trash with a 6.75 HP BS. It also has a shut-off switch problem & the right front drive wheel was stripped. I ordered a new wheel for 21.00 & now I got a great mower. I can't believe what some ppl throw away.

    Also check carburetor meter valve that holds carburetor bowl on. Looks like a bolt holding carburetor bowl on underneath. Use copper wire to clean small hole in meter valve. Clean bowl out with a little gas. Check air filter is clean. Check spark plug- gap- fouling- wear. My carb was loose on weed whip and a quick fix. Don't know why mounting bolts aren't put in with Loctite from the factory. Good video. Easy to understand. Moved along and showed clearly steps.

    there could be a number of different issues that cause this problem. a video like this is only good for a select few who have the same problem. for once i would like to see a video that covers the gamut of issues but we'll never get that as they are as diverse as the problem.
    other noted causes are trash in the carb. bad fuel. a clogged vent of the gas cap. a dirty carburetor. even a bad safety switch (on riding mowers) can sometimes produce such a problem as well as other things that could be the culprit.

      It really doesn't get much simpler than taking bolts off and putting them back on. You're not having to tear down any parts to fix internals. My 8 year old daughter just did a similar repair as I talked her through it

    Agreed. This may "look" easy. But most people don't even realize that these items being "unscrewed" are not "bolts" or "screws." It looks like they are those "torque" things that are on the backs of dryers and washers. The repairman use those things just to make it so "normal" people can't fix the things with their traditional tools such as a flat screwdriver.

    • @HomeGaragechannel
      @HomeGaragechannel  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Michael Zoran thank you. Yes for most a torx bit may be foreign to them.

    • @Mrcaffinebean
      @Mrcaffinebean 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Michael Zoran just buy a torx screw driver? It’s like saying filling up your car is hard because the gas pumps don’t look like they do in the 50s. They still work the same.

    There's no way I could do this. I've bought three very pricey mowers in 4 years. Cost me more to get them "repaired" than it would to buy new ones. It's like these things are built to self destruct after Xamount of uses.

    • @lalahaha5313
      @lalahaha5313 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Same here!!! I've been through 2 in 2 years and I'm getting ready to buy a third it looks like. This is after oil checks, fuel stabilizer, cleaning each time, etc... I've heard the term "planned obsolescence" for appliances but I guess the same is true for lawn mowers.

When i tried to start it, the engine was konking out exactly like yours, so i guess that's the problem. Ill have to dissemble further to expose those bolts and hopefully that will solve it.
