    Yes! We have the blinking lights!
    A small addendum to your point about RAM: very high RAM configurations (more than 768 GB) are only supported by the 24 and 28 core CPUs.

    I absolutely agree! The memory channel is indeed best used in these configurations. Hence why you shouldn't even buy the stock setting that you get with the Mac Pro. I bought 96GB of ram straightly from them because it's not crazy expensive and i have a feeling i will have more then enough for the for seeable future. The Call digit is absolutely great and also, not to forget, the SD card is for the new generation too! So it will be faster as well if your sd card is from a newer class!

      He’s saying to get 6 sticks (3 pairs) of higher capacity ram and to remove the Apple kit (4 sticks I think) so you don’t mix and match and lose out on speed/performance, and so you can take advantage of the Xeon’s 6 channel memory support (2 dimms per channel)

    If you have time can you talk about how your Mac interacts and interconnects with the Avid Protools hardware? I saw your videos about setting it up but I am unfamiliar with the connection standard or how the interface is different from usb besides speed.

    • @ElijahCiali
      @ElijahCiali 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Pretty sure Avid’s connector is more stable and is probably higher resistance (it _is_ audio gear)

    • @NeilParfittMusic
      @NeilParfittMusic  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      not sure when I'll get to it - but off hand...
      If we're talking ProTool's own HDX gear:
      Each HDX PCIe Card is 64ch wide (in 32ch chunks) using 2 of their own proprietary cable/connection called 'Digilink'. With their Analog 16ch ADC/DAC HD I/O's, that's 64ch of up to 192k. Between both digilink connectors you can cascade additional interfaces up to 64ch ch. in total per HDX card.
      If you're using a digital interface such as MADI, you can use both connections on a single interface - and standard channel counts apply for this 44/48k: 64 channel, 88/96k: 32 channel. 18ch, 192k: 8ch etc.
      Each card gives you 256 dedicated 'voices' via DSP, so your computer specs are almost irrelevant. It's just 'handle it'
      Currently, you can connect up to 3 HDX cards into a unified system and that gives you 192 inputs and outputs, 768 dedicated voices running via DSP at a latency of 20 samples (if used as a dedicated recorder)... this is why this system is used in large scale recordings such orchestral, broadcast etc.
      Also, these interfaces can be up to 100 feet away from the HDX cards if you're running 96k and below... which is what you'll see in larger facilities if the computer isn't nearby.
      If 768 voices aren't enough, you can lock multiple Protools systems together that are frame accurate and up to +/- 4 samples accurate - which is why you'll see this on film mixing stages to accommodate the sheer number of tracks and sound departments. In this situation, it's pretty standard to see entire systems dedicated to specifics such as Dialogue, Score, SFX etc..
      The AVID MTRX an interesting box as you can run multiple machines through the same rig and "Matrix' patch the i/o between multiple systems... so an example here is ie:: a movie score: you have the Orchestral machine, you have the prelay machine and then your stem printing machine - all digilinked from various systems into this box, and signals routed all over the place accordingly in only a 2U footprint.
      People tend to bash Pro Tools, but because of the above - love it or hate it, this is why it's pretty much the standard all over the place. They're an appliance.
      Hope that helps!

    Question. I am a studio engineer and producer. I wanted to get your take on how much ram you think is good to get (like general rules of thumb for audio engineers & producers). Any advice? Cause most TH-cam vids say that a lot of ram is completely unnecessary even in audio, yet you seem to know what you’re talking about and you have 384 gigs of ram 🤣😂 Any insight?

    • @NeilParfittMusic
      @NeilParfittMusic  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      depends on what you're doing.. if you have a ton of samples.. huge trackcounts.. high sample rates..5.1 and beyond etc. What are you usually working on?

    • @88fingerspro
      @88fingerspro 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Neil Parfitt Wow thanks for responding man! I mix a lot and my track counts are usually in the 150-200 range (not counting busses and FX Auxes and all of that). I’ve been having to mix a weekly stream for a church at 96k with up to 32 tracks. It kills my laptop (Mid 2015 with 16 gigs of Ram) but my old tower I just bought a month ago (5,1 tower with 16 gigs of Ram also) eats through whatever my laptop struggles with. The processor is just a lot more powerful (laptop = 2.5ghz quad core & tower = 3.33ghz 6 core). I thought just to max the RAM out at 48GB but I don’t know if it’ll be diminishing returns. Oh yeah, when I produce, I do mostly live instrumentation, but I do use sample based drums and other things like Keyscape and Omnisphere in my production as well, which once again kills my laptop. So, AAAALLLL of that to say, I do usually have high track counts to mix (not a thousand tracks like you tho! 😂😂). Do you think more RAM in this kind of situation is a good thing or unnecessary?

Most of your content isn't relevant to me at all - maybe it's the blinking wall of lights behind most shots, maybe it's my awe in the fact that one can succeed in music in the way you do, but regardless it's awesome content, especially since it's not that high video sterile production crap.

    Every single apple device I've bought from apple (vs 3rd party) is through the refurbished listings.
    *A brand new product has an accepted manufacturing failure rate. A refurbished item was specifically checked by a human, and does not have an 'acceptable failure rate' associated with it.* .... probably.
