Yes yes yes. Having an infectious disease is SO relaxing compared to chronic illness. You know its gonna end and you know you cant do anything about it, AND everybody is on the same page about that
I'm always telling my friends: Advocate for yourself; Nobody knows your needs better than you do; Self-care is productive; You deserve to rest; You deserve to eat; You deserve accommodations to make your life easier; and a litany of other things, but when they say it to me, I feel avoidant and undeserving. I'm not exactly sure what the source of this is, but it seems common among the disabled and chronically ill. You are one of my favorite internet people, so I hope you will take good care of yourself. I bid you good rest, my dear.
The thing that I think is offensive about the whole "learning from sickness" thing is the "you should feel blessed actually" sentiment. Having covid and mononucleosis were both experiences that taught me a lot about myself, about pain, and especially about the way that capitalism punishes you for being sick, even temporarily. Still, these were net negative experiences that damaged me permanently, and whatever perspective I gained from it does not justify it
I actually got fired once for calling in sick because I couldn't stand (my first time in nearly four months working there; my coworkers called in for stuff fairly regularly). Ableism is wild
It's perfectly OK to cut yourself some slack. It doesn't always have to be mind over matter and when your body says that it has enough for now, just listen to it. That capitalistic notion that we have to be productive all of the time or we are not worthy of existing is pure BS. Anyways, get well soon!
I'll never forget feeling terrible on HS finals one days and my mother said why don't you just try. I ended up laying on my desk and going home with a 103° fever. I took that final over the Summer and it was fine but yeah, just had to go 🙄
Oh and I now recall being sick with a sore throat for a month in college and I just had to keep going? I had brown mucus so thick it would get stuck in my teeth. Totally fine. The only plus was it was Winter and frigid air was the only relief. Good times...
I say "regular sick" too. You're funny. Don't lose that quality. Please drink plenty of fluids. Don't get dehydrated. Get well me fellow autistic sister
i hear you, thank you for sharing your experience. i also feel more relaxed when i have "normal" pain or sick (stubbing a finger, a cold,...) because i allow myself to rest. there's a social script for this and i don't have to climb mountains to find compassion for myself.
6 months later and I am rewatching this video with my (first known) COVID infection. I totally get what you're saying. It's such a weird space to exist in
OMG yes - wear masks, people!!! I didn’t on NYE, and nearly two weeks later I’m still fighting off Covid that I got then, AND this is after taking Paxlovid (which did help a lot, but it’s definitely not a cure). Thank you for sharing your thoughts about illness, both chronic and otherwise, it gave me some very thought provoking concepts that I’m going to roll around on my head for a while. I hope you get well soon and feel better, Sydney - but in the meantime, definitely savor the downtime, rest, and comfort foods!! ❤And tell Mr. Humdiddy that I said hi - he sounds like a wonderful friend to have at a time like this! 😂
Hello hi yes thank you for this I have IBS and many other chronic conditions as well. Everything from this ramble is very accurate to my lived experience and I’m saving it to my favorite videos. I’m going to send it to my chronically ill pals too. Sending you all the love you deserve as a human being.
I’m a baby about sore throat, because that’s an unusual pain. Dislocated joints are usual pain, I am used to ignoring that pain. I don’t take pain meds for sore throat I can’t even swallow or speak nothing is going down my throat. Maybe hot water or vegetable broth, if I can somehow make my throat do a tiny swallowing motion.
I relate to this so much! I'm fighting a cold right now. Thank for this! I used to not get colds much, because my immune system was overactive fighting chronic, systemic infections. I now have dealt with a lot of the underlying issues, and have less sytemic infection. And my immune system has calmed down, I am getting colds all the time, and they give me such bad encephalopathy.
I love how they gave us a review anyway at the end, haha. Jokes aside, this was great, I would enjoy watching more of this type of unscripted video if it's something you plan on making!

We deserve rest and care simply because we exist.

Great video as usual! Excited for your next one
Also for folks wanting to wear masks, KN95s or N95s are your best bet 💜

Warm greetings to the little shark beside you!
When I was on crutches I was accepted

Chronically ill people remind us that we’re not 100% in control and the current culture doesn’t like that!
