I think you two made the most logical and reasonable reasons as to why sometimes Eva is just over hyped. Whenever I see someone saying Eva is over hyped, is usually just boils down to, “Oh because depression and teenagers bad.” I still love Eva to death, but I do understand that it’s over hyped a little. I do somewhat enjoy Rebuild, but I’ll always prefer NGE Also (as my username suggests) the Eva’s definitely lose some of their “awesomeness” in Rebuild. Rebuild really just does have less time and it’s really noticeable in 1.0 and 2.0, but since 3.0 and 3.0+1.0 are their entirely own thing, they’re alright

It's got missteps here and there, but I found the two main characters progression really good, and it's one of the anime where the mechs aren't fancy, they're just war-machines. Especially the protagonists' mechs. Oh and definitely look at Gundam The Advent of the Red Comet! It's so good! Ok I gotta stop.... Despite the great similarities, some differences are notable, like the introduction of Lilith and a mysterious apparition of Kaworu on the moon. ○Evangelion: 2.0 You Can (Not) Advance continues the story of the previous film and is a much looser retelling or re-imagining of episodes 8 through 23. Its differences include newly designed creatures and new characters such as Mari Illustrious Makinami. Plus Asuka is also introduced as well. ○Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo is the first film to completely break from the original continuity and tell a completely new story that taking place fourteen years after the previous events rival. ○Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time concludes the story with some references from End of Evangelion and some scenes from the original show. It shows the final conflict between NERV and WILLE, as well as between Gendo and Shinji.
_Eva_ is a weird show, in part because there's a lot of people who fall in love with the setting, want to know "But what do they _eat?"_ and are horribly disappointed because Anno just doesn't care about the physical mechanics of any of it. He's here to tell a story about a depressed person learning how to accept himself and maybe even those around him. Also, the second Rebuild movie has the most immersion-breaking moment in _Evangelion_ where Kaji's VA tries to English.
Man, Evangelion is one of those things that's been really stuck in mind. I watched in my formative teenage years (back in 05-06) while fucking clinically depressed, so no wonder it branded like a cattle prod in my brain. I watched the series, movies, read manga, read fandom (god damn I with the most cathartic things around the EVA universe wasn't a doujin), trolled around the internet for any tid bit of canon that I could to piece together the whole plot. I put it in the same place (emotionally) as the joker movie. It's something that I can't revisit without it affecting me for a couple of weeks. The portrayal of depression and mental illness is too believable for me to just watch it as entertainment - as weird as that sounds. I really wanted to like the rebuild series and the first movie really set up things right. Plot points, characters, locations, etc. The ramiel fight was really on point. The second movie was FUCKING HYPE. Finally Shjinji grew some fucking balls and tried to save the best girl. It's like they were actually maybe committing to the rebuild being a continuation of the End of movie. The pre-vis that was shown at the end of the second movie was when things took a turn for the weird and unappealing for me. It's like gendo went "so, I heard you guys liked Gurren Lagann" and the whole original Evangelion verse was dropped. I kind of blame myself for investing too much into it. I guess I really wanted an EVA-light were things actually worked out for the better within the same canon of the show, but Anno went ahead and just did his thing and I can't blame him for it.
Neon Genesis Evangelion nearly drove me to suicide. Seeing Shinji suffering is like seeing myself suffer, because at one point in time I was almost exactly like him, especially back in 10th grade when I was bullied to the brink of suicide. I simply cannot tolerate watching Eva. I felt forced to relive my trauma upon viewing it. I’m deathly afraid of it. Twice I had a nightmare where I saw myself as Shinji choking Asuka and starting the Third Impact. I’ve been struggling with this newfound depression ever since. I was obsessed with the series for over a year to try and outwit the isolation of the Coronavirus pandemic. It only increased the burden, and kept the memory of my friend’s recent suicide alive. Watching the End of Evangelion was like peering into a broken mirror, and I was viewing the hell I would’ve put myself through had things turned out differently, had I decided to give up living. It still haunts me to this day. Sometimes I hate myself because I fail to appreciate what so many have claimed to idolize, and I beat myself further for failing to worship what they call praiseworthy, I forced myself to watch a show that reminded me of nothing but pain just so I wouldn’t be alone anymore, I was willing to sacrifice my individuality for some company amidst the isolation of the pandemic. I sought emotional refuge in the Evangelion fandom on social media, hoping they’d understand me and provide me with answers that would grant me peace of mind. Instead, they downplayed my trauma, going so far as to spread a rumor of my past to shame me of my mental illness, spiraling me deeper into depression, which I’ve been struggling with for over two years now. I just want Shinji to be happy, so this past self of mine can be laid to rest once more. I’m afraid to decouple myself from him after losing my friend to suicide, which Eva made me feel responsible for, especially when I saw Shinji kill Kaworu, of which I fail to understand how anyone can call it praiseworthy. Until then, I feel nothing else matters. There’s a reason why I keep coming back to Evangelion; something that reminds me of nothing but pain. I want to prove to myself I’m not crazy for feeling this way, that Evangelion really did force me to relive my trauma, that my depression is not just a figment of my imagination or another anime plot point. I want to feel that my fear and resentment towards Eva is justified. But the fact I’m the only one I know in existence who’s been traumatized by an anime makes me feel like I really am crazy. But finally, with 3.0+1.0 released, I can rest easy knowing that Shinji has finally reached the light at the end of the tunnel. Evangelion is finished, and I want it to remain that way. But if things hadn’t turned out that way, I wouldn’t be here today.

The original Evangelion is a Gnostic story. If you know about the occult alot of references make sense in the original shows. I haven't seen the others.
