I use lego's to make my mold boxes & clay. I use a hair dryer to melt the clay down perfect. for my Pour spouts. I also use clay. Thin on one end touching the part. But the top is bigger. Yes Lego's work just as well for any size mold boxes as well.

Love these more advanced vids! :) Maby make a vid or a series of vids showing the process of bringing a product to life. I know you have done before but mostly all the steps with different object. Take a household product like a hand held staff mixer for example. Really drag it out and show all methods of generating ideas and evaluating them and then refining them and then move over to final rendering and a final model/models for selling the new product. :)

THIS IS GREAT! I've been trying ro make a two part mold using the clay bottom method. I just couldn't get the clay to cooperate. I'm gonna try this way!
You need to use non-sulfur-based clay so you don't have any issues
I have started using laser cut finger boxes made of 1/8" (3 mm) acrylic for my reusable mold boxes. I seal them with blue masking tape for (they are small to medium depth - usually less than 4" or 100 mm deep). They are easier to prep than mdf but there is always some clean up where the silicone seeps into the finger joints.

Great video Eric. Just subbed. About your riser. It got me to thinking. I’m learning to 2 part mold my 3D printed product, and have issues with the bottom edge not quite coming out nice and clean. Imagine a cereal bowl face down for part A pour. I’m trying to get that edge perfect. I think the riser is a great idea. I may make my riser just a little taller for my product. Any ideas? Thanks ahead of time!

I made some molds with the smooth on mold kit for some small cylinder pieces and after second resin use I noticed some cracking on the inside of the mold. Is this due to too much stress trying to get the parts out without like a side slit. Or possibly from leaving the molds in my hot garage? Thanks for any advice. Great work btw

Could be either but I would not recommend storing molds in a hot environment. The natural oil of the silicon will leach out over time and the mold will fail.
cwnorton thank you. I figured as much and forgot them for a few weeks then thought might be like the resin not keeping it in there. I’ll make another mold and keep indoors with the resin. Thanks guys

Great video Eric, I have a question though. I understand two part molds but in an application like this where the bottom of the item is flat anyways, why not just make the one part mold?
Good question, the part gets finished on the bottom with an adhesive cork back, thus needs to be very flat and finished. Also you can never get anything consistent without the second half of the mold

Possible, yes, difficult, absolutely
Last time I make a silicon mold was thirty years ago! I was casting polyurethan fantasy jewelry. Also i remember some kind of reaction between the silicon mold and the pieces. They get out sluggy. Bad silicon?
Tough to say, are you sure it was actually silicone? I've seen that before where people think they're using silicone but they're not

those bubbles in the begining may happen because of your pouring technique. every little flap the silicone stream makes can enclose a little bubble. thats why "stringing" only makes sense with non-degassed liquids, because it gets more bubbles out as it gets in. the solution is simple: keep the container close to the mold box while pouring and let the stream run down a wall without flapping. i'd also encurage you to use transparent silicone
Actually that's not correct those bubbles at the end happen because I stick a stick inside the container to scrape the silicone out.
@@EricStrebel oh, that seems to be the case here, sorry! if you need to scrape the max. out of your container at some point, you can try those silicone spatulas for baking

Aren't you concerned that the top cover of the mold will slightly bend under its own weight? Making bottom of the part kinda round...
No, you could always put it back in the mold box if you had that issue
A 50/50 mix of 99% isopropyl alcohol and dish soap is a great silicone release--the isopropyl evaporates leaving behind a soap film, which can easily be washed off the mold afterwards
It sounds like you're talking too close to the mic
