  • I found the artifacts from The Edmund Fitzgerald that were brought to the surface. The ship sank on November 10, 1975 taking 29 men.

I was 13. I remember my dad crying over news from television twice in my life. One, landing on the moon. Two, The Edmund Fitzgerald. Though in Arkansas, it affected him as he was in the Coast Guard in World War II, stationed at Pearl Harbor (after the attack, but not long after). He said, I may not have been a seaman by ship, but I was brother to my seaman at sea. I never understood what he meant, until I heard the song.

@@tracycc123 Sadly he left 17 years ago, and now resides on the heavenly waves. But thank you. My mom was also Coast Guard and they met on Pier 11 in Honolulu. The joke between them was, she actually out ranked my dad. They were married nearly 70 years before dad passed. My mom lived till 99 years of age.

My dad was stationed with the Navy in Honolulu in 1952-56, I wonder if he crossed paths with your parents or perhaps they were back stateside before he got there ? When he came back he joined the AirForce so he could go to the Space base at Vandenburg.AFB.

It was Gordon Lightfoot's masterpiece that brought my awareness of the wreck. Thank you Scott & Troy for taking us on this journey with you. The life size wax figures in the musuem was a nice touch and added so much. Seeing the bell so lovingly cared for and cherished made my eyes well up a bit. Thanks again.

There will be a memorial service broadcast tonight at 7 on utube from the museum. I follow the ships via video cameras on the lakes. The Anderson is one of my and hundreds of others favorite ship. She made it to the safety of whitefish bay but went back into the storm to search. Over 30,000 lives have been lost on the lakes. A proud Michigander.

I watched the video Ask a Mortician did and grew to respect the story even more. Thank you for bringing all of us to the museum with you. May all those who were lost at sea Rest in Peace. 🙏

Is it white fish point or white fish Bay? I've been to the up ( Drummond Island) and I always thought it was white fish bay. I'm a transplant from Pa, and have only been up north a few times. In sau Saint Marie, they have a ship that did tours and they had pieces from the wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald.

The bell was the only thing salvaged the rest of the things either came loose as she went down or at some point came loose and drifted to shore. It's a very unsettling fact that part of the reason the families did not want anymore diving is some of bodies are beside the wreck and visible in the pilot house. Unlike anywhere else they still look like they did that fateful day due to the temperature or as in the song Superior doesn't give up her dead.

In 1975, we lived near Sarnia, Ontario, Canada. On that fateful morning, I was driving along the 'Lakeshore Parkway' southward, through Corunna. The cargo ship, the 'Lakeshell 2' was docked there, and I stopped and spoke with some crewmembers. I made mention of the winds and they agreed, saying they'd heard that one of the big ships had sunk that morning. At that point they did not know which one. So whenever I hear Gordon Lighfoot's song, I think of that sad morning.

This is Cindy, I've commented a few times on your videos. I'm from 8 mile and Van Dyke. Right before you said, "People swim up here. Are they nuts?" I was just thinking about how I'm afraid of Lake Superior. Lol. How it's so deep and cold that it preserves bodies, lol. And its SOO unpredictable. That's one lake I won't even go on a boat on. I LOVE Mackinac Island. Have very fond memories there. And Houghton Lake. My Aunt and Uncle had a cabin there and then built a house on the land they owned. Just sold after my uncle passed in 2015.

November 10, 1975. That is a flashbulb date in my memories. I remember where I was and what I was doing that day. It took over the news and the papers; everyone talked about it non-stop. Since that day I've written dozens of middle and high school papers and even a couple of college papers on the Fitz. It was my go-to topic. I knew all that there was to know and I still remember a lot of it to this day.
For me, the Edmund Fitzgerald never really sank. It simply remains in the mist and just over the horizon in the distance. Captain McSorley and his crew now on patrol to keep mariners on other ships safe in their journeys. Fair winds and following seas, sailors.

Beautiful video work, Scott! (and Troy too) I never knew the story behind the song, which played so much on the radio that I got sick of it. Besides, what do I know? I'm from the SF Bay Area. Since the pandemic started, all I've been doing is looking up stories events, incidents, and so on that I missed out on as a sheltered kid in the 70s. I love history and crime stories :P and finding a new story I never heard before. Anyway, Imma go read the words to the song and enjoy that. That one display of what a lighthouse is: A guiding light. A welcome sight for people heading home from sailing on the dangerous lake. Thank you, Scott and Troy. Wish I could travel, but you make clips here that are important in history.

When this song came out, I loved it. Gordon Lightfoot had a voice that is very soothing to listen to.
I must admit I haven't heard it in quite a few years, so I don't recall the lyrics, but I do know I really liked it.
Cut to this morning watching this video..
I guess I always knew the wreck was a true story, but something that happened at least 100 years ago.
I am blown away to find out that this happened in my lifetime. I was 12 years old and I do not recall anything about this at all. I watched the news after I got cleaned up for dinner every night with my Dad waiting for dinner.
I'm stunned that I have no memory of this at all.
All I can think of is that my Dad (who was very ill, always) may have been in the hospital at this time & we either were shipped off to caregivers or in home babysitters.
I'm off to go listen to this song & Google the lyrics. I'm just shaking my head, still blown away!!! 🤯
Thank you Scott for the great video & the amazing history lesson!!!

Lived near Detroit all my life and remember when the Fitz was all over the news. So tragic. Actually just found out that the bow is in US waters and the stern is in Canadian waters. Who knew 🤷‍♀️

Being from Michigan, your video of the cruise with the Big Mac to the coastline was incredibly well put together. So many trees to see along that drive. Where did you and Troy end up staying? (There isn’t much for accommodation in the area.) The Falls is always nice to visit as well with its copper color. Safe travels always.

Scott, such a wonderful tour! I thought they'd dock this for the beginning of the video due to Gorden Lightfoot's song. 😅 Glad they didn't! The lighthouse was phenomenal! Very well presented, although a tad creepy with the wax figures looming about!!! 😮 I really enjoyed the tour! ❤❤❤
I spent one day at Mackinaw Island for my honeymoon (my 1st marriage. We sat in the bar that night and watched the last episode of Mash. My grandfather had a heart attack the day after our wedding, so I returned to Iowa to be there when he woke up from a quad bypass surgery. 😢 Now, when we look at those pictures of the wedding, you can see how sick he was. 😢😢😢
I'm glad he was there, but it also makes me feel guilty. He disliked the man I married, for years I thought him being there caused his heart attack. I went on to nursing school, and of course, I learned that's not true! He went on to live another 12 years after his bypass! 😊😊😊

I lived in the Great Lakes area (Lake Ontario) most of my childhood. What people who have never been to this area sometimes don't realize these 'lakes' are like small oceans. The storms that would come across the lakes and these ships would see rival anything you'd see out on the open ocean.

For the entire video, I heard Gordan's song play in my head. Thank you for taking us along with you on your tour of this incredible place, I always wondered what Lake Superior looked like. And I'm sure the water is as cold as it looks in this video, it gave me chills. Rest in Peace all who have lost their lives in that Lake, you will not be forgotten.

Great video. You should do one on Leslie Pluhar who accidentally drove her vehicle off the Mackinac bridge in sept 1989. They recovered her vehicle a few days later.

I just looked her up. Speeding across the bridge in a lightweight car in heavy winds. But it's the bridge's fault.

What a wonderful and sad display of ships and their men that parrished for God only knows what reason. Thank you dearly departed for this taking us a long on this touching tour through the museum. Also thank you for turning down the original back ground volume. Stay safe blessings, cheers.

It looks like the effing ocean with those whitecaps!
That was a Great tour of the museums.
    Very interesting!
    So many cool artifacts.
That was a lot of ships lost over the years!
Who’d think that the weather on a lake could get so bad!
I remember Gordon’s haunting song on the radio,in the 70s.
And because the bottom of the lakes are so cold nothing rots.

My great-grandfather was a merchant marine during World War II; since he grew up to be a fisherman in the upper peninsula, it was a natural choice.
As an Irish immigrant via Canada, the family was all farmers & dairy owners, and fishermen… & as much as I love to hear my grandmother’s stories about growing up there, and doing south to hunt, heading out on the boat to fish w/ him, & childhoods spent swimming in the FREEZING🥶 lake + river waters… & abt 9+ ft snow drifts outside their door in the winter, that they had to tunnel out of at times…
I would listen & never be SO FU@$*NG HAPPY that my maternal UP, Michigan side & Paternal Eerie, PA side both, somehow, ✨MAGICALLY,✨ made it all the way south to TEXAS… & then, met up.
(Both grandparents were the only kids in their family to leave…) bc this Lonestar lady (me) can barely imagine putting more than her big toe in those Great Lakes or living thru a winter colder than 18°… oh what a blessed destiny!🙏🏻😂
However, I love going up north in summer and am glad to add a new place to visit to my wishlist, thanks for the virtual visit- y’all are always so great at this…
I appreciate the thought to take us “traveling” alongside u!

The Mighty Fitz was beautiful, I spent a lot of my summers as a child on Lake Erie.
You could hear her coming up to 8 miles away. She was always blasting music.
When we heard her coming, we ran to the water, if Captain McSorley saw us he would blow her horn.
The summer of 76 was weird her not being there.

Pre covid they actually had the crews quarters open as a bed and breakfast where you could stay. My wife and I stayed there a couple times. It was neat going out on that deck on the water at night with a warming beverage and blanket, and watching the freighters go by. Sadly it's no longer open for that.
