As a metalhead it always makes me happy to see people actually give heavy music a chance. So many people get scared by metal and think that we’re evil people and that all metal is just screaming. 99% of metalheads are super awesome and nice people. Thanks to Nu Metal bands like Korn, a lot of hip hop fans and rap fans started getting into metal.
I have one completely unorganized playlist featuring: Elton John, David Bowie, Frank Sinatra, Queen, Metallica, Slipknot, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Pink Floyd, Kanye West, Travis Scott, DMX, Snoop Dogg, Jamiroquai, Jay-Z, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Chance the rapper, Tyler the creator, Mac Miller, John Lennon, and more. So in conclusion, that playlist is just an emotional rollercoaster
I swear to god, the people that only listen to one genre just confuse the shit out of me, how the hell do you only listen to the same stuff and not get bored
@@sebastianherrera6514 I listen to a lot of the same genre, but FR I am expanding my taste tho. I like old ish and blues, some rock, indie, pop, and rnb also rap but I love exploring other genres. Ppl who hate on anything that isn’t rap is cringe lol
They might just be on one genre they really like for a really long time. Like I'm a complete metalhead, but I used to geniunely like classical music. It wasn't that classical was bad, it just wasn't my favorite. So keep looking for that perfect one!
@@IanLMusic Metal is my perfect genre, it fits every mood I'm in and I RARELY get tired of it, but I still like other genres too. Metal is definitely my most listened to, but not nearly the only one. Just because I like it the most doesn't mean I'll stop listening to everything else
As a Metalhead, this is actually amazing. I love when new people discover this genre of music. Also, I love the intro. The post solo riff in Master Of Puppets in criminally underrated. I suggest listening to Morbid Angel if you want to get into some old school metal! Much love man.
The first time I heard that MoP riff I was a little blown away. On the surface, its pretty simple (just running up and down the minor scale) but it sounds so damn good. I too am a metalhead, and I really like the more modern stuff as well as the old stuff (Periphery, After the Burial, Slaughter to Prevail, Meshuggah) and get so happy when someone starts even bopping their head slightly to metal. Im not the biggest fan of rap, but this guy already earned my respect.
One of my favorite things about rock is not only the beautiful use of drums, guitar, and bass (also the more organic sound to it compared to a lot of the digitally produced songs today), but also the many sub-genres inside of it. Just to name a few of my favorite genres, you have punk, metal, emo, and shoegaze. While these may seem like broad and undescriptive terms, there are actually many different sub-genres in these genres of rock, such as pop punk, ska punk, post-punk, horror punk, thrash metal, heavy metal, nu-metal, alternative metal, midwest emo, emo pop, and emo rap. To add even more to the diverse genre of rock, there are also combinations of different genres to create a new and unique genre, such as grunge in the early 90s (a combination of punk, metal, and alternative rock). While I have mentioned a great deal of genres already, this is only the tip of iceberg, as there are many many more genres that are either mainstream or underground. This is why I love rock music so much, as there is a sound for everybody, no matter how different your music tastes are. Another thing I really enjoy about this is the experience of being able to explore different sub-genres and possibly find your favorite band or genre. Lastly, I think that the diverse nature of rock music also allows me to never tire of it, as I could always switch sub-genres if I'm getting tired of the band or song I'm listening to. P.S. some bands I recommend based off of the bands you mentioned in the video would be Title Fight, Alice in Chains, Sunny Day Real Estate, Soundgarden, and the Linkin Park, give them a listen if you want!
Dude, talking about beautiful use of drums, Mitch Mitchell's percussion in "Fire" by Jimi Hendrix is fitting for a song with that title. I think the fire Jimi was standing next to was generated by Mitch beating the hell out of his kit.
i’m suprised you even found the descendents, they’re super underrated. i’d suggest more bands like Black Flag, Bad Brains (if you REALLY like the high energy stuff.), Operation Ivy, and MAYBE t.s.o.l.
I dont like it when people wear band shirts of bands they don’t listen to but it’s mostly because I get excited about finding another fan of the band but they end up not knowing the band
@@xMiiLToN Idk man. It's just a shirt and it looks cool. I have plenty of "California" or whatever sweatshirts and I've never been to the US. It's not that big of a deal imo.
As a white boy who's brain processes rock music as default music in which all other forms of music are just weird variations of rock music, it's really fun to hear the perspective of someone not too familiar with it getting into it. Like when you described discovering punk, man that was cool. Or how you described Nirvana as having 'early 2000s Disney channel vibes' when in reality a lot the disney channel in the early 2000s had Nirvana vibes cuz Nirvana came first. Good video.
I’m Black and grew up listening to anything I wanted and I too process Rock and Metal as default with other forms of music being a variation of Rock or Jazz.
As a multiracial person, I tend to think of music in terms of classical, metal, and folk, (the proper sort that’s been around for a century or more) and other music seems like strange takes on that in stages of the ship of Theseus: sometimes it’s quite similar, sometimes quite distant. But all punk sounds like early 2000s teenager movie to me. It all sounds like the same people, same tone, same everything, whereas metal is greatly nuanced and complex by comparison, to my ear. Strange.
I’m a white boy too, but my friends all listened to hip hop so that was just white I listened to. I started off listening to nirvana and deftones and it changed
I think the guitar just might be my favorite instrument ever. The different tones you can get and play styles appeal to such a wide variety of emotions.
i remember watching this video whenever it came out and it convinced me to get out of my comfort zone with music and im really liking rock, so thank u!!
I really got introduced to rock as a teen by a kid. He was very into, as they say "Dad Rock", but i loved every single song he showed me. Now ever since WLR, i feel like that time is coming back. People got back into skating and everything. Great video man... and don't be afraid of Disco/Dance either.
as a "punk elitist" according to half my local music scene. I will say this. thanks for showing so many people bands like descendents and black flag. means alot to us punk bimbos. good to see someone outside the normal demographic enjoying the genre. its a big breath of fresh air. I saw descendents at the shepards bush empire in 2019 in london and broke my nose lol. I was young at the time. it was fucking incredible though. got a descendents tattoo on my leg now :)
Those bands are amazing! If you admit requests, one of my favourite bands are Korn and Slipknot, if you like rap and metal, this is literally a mixture of both. In general any kind of Nu Metal (which is basicly the genre for Deftones and these bands i've mentioned) is amazing (at least for me), I think you're going to love them
If you want to get into that more ‘Doomy’ side of rock music, definitely give Black Sabbath a taste, pure rock n roll riff salad with a lot of iconic songs you definitely heard somewhere
as a metalhead, i have a recommendation. Limp Bizkit. Nu metal band from the 90's that is still puting out music to this day and if you dont know, Nu Metal is like a mix between metal and hiphop/electro. Hip hop metal go so hard I recommend the album Significant Other and Chocolate Starfish And A Hot Dog Flavored Water
I feel like guitars can either chill you out and be perfect for that sunday drive vibe or they can bring all of hell out of you and make you wanna destroy the whole world. But finding guitar covers of songs from Carti and Yeat was the perfect in between that I was looking for.
LOVED THIS! I grew up with JUST METAL and ROCK, but around HS i started listening to rap and now 1600 songs later on spotify i listen to everything lol
I've been a hardcore metal fan my whole life, black metal, death metal and stuff - recently been checking a lot of hip-hop and found a lot of stuff I surprisingly enjoy like Tyler the creator, Kanye or Death Grips. Good stuff
I saw the thumbnail and title and I was very proud. Also, for picking, I use picks unless the song uses finger style. (thick picks because the thins suck).
I really dig your taste, I've known of your channel for a bit and every time I watch a vid from you, I'm never bored. There really isn't a limit to what your taste in music can become. Even back as a kid I never really stuck to one genre of music because I knew it would become stale at some point. I don't think anyone would care but heres some genres I listen to. D&B, Jazz, Rock, Reggae, Rap, Techno, House, Eurodance, etc. There are so many gems out there.
Was in the same position 14 years ago lol. Now I’m a guitarist of 14 years & picked up drums in 2020. Music is a blessing. It has helped me in every single aspect of my life. Athletically, socially, it taught me to never give up. I use what I learn from drums and apply it to basketball (paradiddles, sticking). Every single skill you learn can be applied to another.
In my early teens, i had got sick of rap and found that I love rock. Back in the mid-'90s, we didn't have the internet to find new stuff. I would get guitar magazines from the library for the sheet music in the back. I played in a punk band during my first year of college. I haven't played much sense.
Literally just found your channel!! I grew up listening to rock. Descendants and Black Flag with my dad, and Pearl Jam and Nirvana with my mom. I’m always happy to see more people begin to love rock and genre hop!! Keep discovering!!
been listening to metal and various types of extreme metal for years but last year i really got into jazz, especially bebop and jazz fusion. it's crazy how you can like different genres of music if you just get into it without any jugement or stereotype. the result is that i'm now learning jazz guitar 6 years after starting and just playing metal, math rock, that shit is hard af but just so fun.
i used to only listen to rap until a couple years ago. i didn’t realize how much i was missing out on until that point. now i’m super into all music and started playing guitar a few months ago (literally one of my biggest passions now. i practice every chance i get and really want to start releasing my own music soon).
As a metalhead, few songs are more unironically calming to listen to than “My Body, A Funeral”, “My Immortal” and “Save our Last Goodbye,” albeit it will leave you with a sense of depression and existentialism if you’re not in such a mood before listening to them, but absolutely marvelous songs all the same. Very grim, but very good. I personally recommend Kreator, Ghost, Ammon Amarth, Evanescence, and Zeal & Ardor to name a few when it comes to good metal. The sheer variety is immense.
Linkin Park is really good. I'd also recommend Bring Me The Horizon if you want something adjacent to Linkin Park and how they constantly changed their sound.
I've been playing guitar consistently for 4 years and the inverse happened to me. Wherein I recently got into rap and grime lately after strictly listening to instrumental guitar genres, from rock to djent to jazz rock fusion. Its such a great feeling to gain an appreciation and liking for a genre you never really bothered listening to before. It's not that I found instrumental guitar boring, its just fatiguing to listen to when you just want to relax. They're great when I want to get inspired to play or learn new ways to approach the instrument, but after such a long time, it felt like a job; repetitively having to keep a part of my brain on to analyze what I'm listening to. I found comfort in rap as the musical elements are simpler. The intervals are more digestable and sound less cacophonic. Great when I just want to vibe around. Happy for you for learning guitar, its a great instrument and I hope you keep up at it! P.s. Just watched you yesterday and your video "YEAT fans be like" came up on my recommended. It was funny and entertaining as Yeat is my favourite rap artist at the moment lmao
This is the same energy as me exploring rap albums as a rock and metal listener. I was bored of listening to my music and decided to listen to an MF DOOM album. He literally changed my opinion on rap as a whole. I then listened to some Kanye, Tyler, Biggie, and Death Grips. I really enjoyed their music. Some recommendations for metal I got is System of a Down's Toxicity, Tool's Lateralus, and Rage Against the Machine's self titled. They're solid albums. Also thanks for telling me about Rocksmith, seems like a decent program.
Rage is so damn good, with nu-metal's resurgence it would be cool to see more people getting into Rage. It's more actual rap-rock than nu-metal tbh but it was very significant toward nu-metal bands.
As a person who has been into rock and metal music for a few years now, I really appreciate other people getting into it. There are some awesome bands that don't have the screamy vocals and still sound heavy. One of the best (in my opinion) for starting with heavier musc sub-genres of metal is nu-metal (so called rap rock), it mixes in a lot of different genres like hip hop and rap which i think is worth checking out if you're new to metal and rock. It's never late to discover new cool music no matter what genre it is.
As a proud metalhead for my entire life. I can confirm that you made a fantastic choice to try our beloved music out. I hope you enjoy it as much as we do. It's awesome that people like you are giving the music we love some attention and expanding your music taste. It makes me super happy. Not just me, but the whole metal community. You should listen to bands like Pantera, Motörhead, W.A.S.P., Sacrifice and Exodus. those guys are treasures. (I know that's 5 bands, but they're all amazing) And I love how you added Michael Angelo Baito in the video at 2:51 great addition!
I've been exploring the heavy metal genre a lot more recently because rap these days doesn't seem to be as aggressive as it once was. Needless to say, I've been enjoying metal bands like Spite and Kublai Khan for the last few months and much more satisfied with metal when it comes making gym playlists 💪
I had the same thing happen but in reverse I've been playing guitar for like 6 years and I basically only listened to rock and metal and recently I've been getting into hip hop and it's awesome
You aren’t the only one with such a mixed playlist Mine contains: -Rap -Rock -Electro Swing -EDM -Pop -Those weird nerdcore songs on TH-cam about the funny bear robot It’s all merged together at this point idrc.
You talking about Deftones made me so happy, they're my favorite band because they have a sound like no other and every album slaps. I'd recommend checking out more of their stuff, but also, if you want something that truly stands alone in music, I have an album for you. This album changed my life as a musician, and it's my favorite of all time, it's called Spiderland by Slint. It has a really dark and eerie vibe, and it gets really quiet, but also really loud. Music's the best man, if you see this, give me some rap albums to check out. I like Mac Miller, Kendrick Lamar, Death Grips, and a little bit of Kanye and JPEGMAFIA.
Thanks you for talking about punk band like The Descendent. Its really help the scene. If you want try other 90s punk band who are full of energy you can try Bad Religion, Pennywise or NOFX and stuff like that.
been getting into a lot more of punk recently specifically street punk. found out about the oi scouts, monster squad, the voids, the virus and more. great music
7:06 I think people are more annoyed by the part of those people not even listening to the band on their shirt. Like imagine walking up to someone who wears a deaftones shirt and ask them what their favourite song is and they're just like: "wtf r u talking about?"
(This is a bit more extreme example) but it’s like wearing a crip mask, then a blood walks up to you, punches you, then you say “wait I just like the shirt I’m not him the gang!”
That’s valid, not in a gatekeeping way but I’ve used band shirts to strike conversations with people so if someone’s wearing a band that they don’t listen to and you ask them about it, it just makes it awkward
Im black from Zimbabwe but living in Switzerland and i must say i can completelx relate. I love metal and rock as much as i love rap but iv been called a whitewashed kid and an uncle tom for all my life because of it. Yet when you see the influence of black on rock you see how stupid they are. Im happy that you made this video because i felt really alone for a while
I thought I was the only one! As an African American who likes rock/metal (not too hard metal) I'm glad your going into a new genre. It's actually very common for me I went to pop to punk rock, pop rock, metal, and indie rock.
As soon as I listened to rock and punk rock, i also really enjoyed it. Nice to know that you're expanding your favorite music. Also, this video was great. Keep up the good work!
Damn bro if only fans of rock and metal would try to branch into rap/hiphop more often but all they wanna do is gatekeep other metalheads for not correctly labelling their favorite band as supersonic-death-punk-grind-thrashcore. Props for branching out !
I'm (mostly) a metalhead. It's hard for us to get into rap because you have to wade through a sea of trashy songs that just go "I kill a man yesterday, yuh. I fucked 2 bitches at the same time, yuh. None of them hoes were my girl, yuh. I am so rich and cooler than you, yuh. Also fuck your dead brother lmao." That's why I love Kendrick. After the beef he showed the whole world how much of a genius he is. He makes actual art instead of just drill gangster slop that only exists to make more money for the "artist". I imagine it's the same way for rap fans. I too hate the ocean of stupid screams and edgy lyrics.
@@deanisawesome rap can be stemmed from spoken word poetry but instead of ambience, there is a steady rhythm that can give the artist room to create clever cadences, schemes, meters, and themes to contrast or flow with the instrumental. Of course that isn’t what’s popular at the moment, but artistry and talent is out there. The gift of hearing shouldn’t be wasted.
Love it when people who never listened to metal punk or rock decide to get into the genre we all started with softer bands and then finished with heavy ass genres keep expanding man ❤
This is very relatable because Rap has turned into f u, I got bitches and I am having fun with them in bed, Da Da Da Da- No one cares about that ish, the one thing made rap so good was how people used it for relatable things in the hood and their struggles that would form the music into something interesting that would make it feel good to listen instead of someone rapping atrociously for people to hear about these things that doesn’t go together, I feel you very well and I know this, improving your craft and how your words go in a song would be way better than these people saying the most out of pocket ish for people to hear and be apart of their personalities.
Hearing you go from finding out about rock, to taking out your old guitar, to actually trying to learn and finding out about RockSmith made me super proud of you man. Keep shredding, those fingers will get armor plates on em eventually 👍 And do the score attack gamemode, you can unlock new fire songs from it.
Dude that Michael Angelo Batio part at 2:51 was lit! He's my favorite guitarist and I totally get it, he flexes HARD. Laughed so hard at that part of the video lol
yo, glad you've discovered a new genres :) If you're interested in some cool bands - try Thornhill, Sleep Token, Loathe(they have some very heavy songs, but also Deftones inspired ones too, such as Two Way Mirror), maybe Northlane. And as for guitar - try putting lighter gauge strings, especially if you have acoustic, since there are frequently very thick strings put on them
I always love videos like this. Partially because people shoukd expand their musical tastes and explore. But also because I had a similar experience in reverse. I started listening to rock and punk, and then eventually wanted something else and started getting into rap. Granted, I'm not gonna lie about it. I think part of the reason I hated rap growing up was because my parents are fairly racist... So I didn't have a healthy view of black people growing up. So the only rap I really listened to that I can remember was Eminem and Will Smith. But then I got older and started to actually talk more to black kids in my school and realized it was all dumb. But any ways, I remember hanging out with some friends. A rap song came on, and I kind of liked it. So I got the album. I don't even remember which one it was at this point. But then I started listening to some similar stuff. Then I would hear a song in a game and really like it, while before I would have ignored it. Now I listen to all kinds of stuff. And I think it was for similar reasons. I was mostly listening to the same stuff on repeat. A new album would drop, and I would be excited, but after awhile even that excitement wasn't as strong. So I branched out, and I'm glad I did.
Also, you got good taste. Deftones is a personal favorite. You reminded me of how much I missed it and I had to put on 'Entombed' from the Koi No Yokan album. A song about the singer's friend, who was in a coma. Very touching.
Great video. I love the Deftones. Something else I want to mention is that some artists can have a dramatically different sound than others that are part of the same genre. Danny Brown (one of my favorite rappers) has a much different sound from someone like Kendrick Lamar (and both have very diverse discographies in their own right. Danny's new colab with JPEGMAFIA sounds INSANE, after all.). It's definitely important to be open-minded with music.
Wow, similar to my upbringing. I grew up in the hood in the 90's, listening to 2pac, biggie, Coolio, and a bunch of rap. One day I was transferred to another school, and kids were cool there. They put me on to Nirvana, 311, sublime, and Korn. I felt like I could relate to the music for some reason. I stopped listening to Rap and started my journey into rock. Even though I was still in tune with the hip hop culture, rock was a big part of my life. Went to see a lot of bands in concert like the stone temple pilots and unwritten law. I ended up putting some of my hood friends onto rock, songs like Inside Out by Anthrax and Epic by Faith No More, and they liked it. Yo, my dude, rock music is the best music to discover. Keep digging deeper into punk, alternative, grunge, and even metal. More power to you, bro.
Bro I just went through the same change. I listened to Yeat and Opium only but I loved this local band called Flipturn(it's like indie rock)so I decided I wanted to find out more music like it, so I put in Flipturn radio and the first song that played was Booster Seat by Spacey Jane. They're this Australian indie rock band and I'm not joking when I say they make some of the best music I've ever heard. So clean, the vocals, lyrics, production, it's all amazing and the guys' voice was amazing. I then went through the Australian indie rock scene and while nothing was as good as Spacey Jane, there still was some heat. Trucks by Spacey Jane is literally the best song I've ever listened to. The vocals, the story, the lyrics, and the production, actually gave me a feeling of nostalgia and it doesn't even try it just is talking about hard times and working through the low points but something about it was so pure. People call me emo now but I don't care. Listen to Booster Seat by Spacey Jane and you'll go through the same thing.
@@Steezealways Nah Hammer and Saba used to be my 2 most-played artists in 2018. They never got the number 1 song spot tho, 6 years in a row it's gone to Vanilla by flipturn. That's some unground rock you should listen to

I got into rap late asf (2017 HS sophmore) so before that I was into lofi, edm, alt etc. Glad I never fell into a box where I only found rap entertaining to listen to, but I gotta say I can see why so many people fuck with it after having listened for like 6 years now. Definitely has this vibe to it that makes you wanna rap along and with all the complex flows and styles, it never gets old.
i'm just gonna throw in a small suggestion ghost is more of a rock band, but i do recommend their live album. my personal favorite on that, has to be mummy dust. Ceremony and devotion is just a work of art
I grew up on rock/metal/punk music, but got myself a lot into rap/hip-hop as I got older. I think 2010-2015 were just absolute golden ages for rap music, new artists were popping up like mushrooms, banger after banger. Even the new wave with all the Soundcloud rappers had something unique to offer, but as time went on, I got super bored of it all. I feel like a lot of mainstream rap nowadays is just about becoming viral on tiktok, it became repetitive, and I stopped feeling passion in this music. Rap fatigue was just settled in for good for me, so the past year I was on a journey of discovering rock, metal and punk music all over again. It got me to explore some more niche genres like shoegaze, black metal or hardcore punk. I fucking love the raw emotion and lyrics in this music, the emotion factor especially is something I've been missing in hip hop a lot. I don't feel like I can even come back to rap anymore, every time I see a new song dropping from my favourite rap artist, I can't seem to listen it entirely. Rap just isn't innovative anymore, while hardcore is booming rn, emo is having a revival, and again - it's just pure fucking passion and emotion in this, while I feel rap and hip hop, just became a gateway to being a rich celebrity, rather than music itself.
As a mostly rock fan, I love seeing people fully discovering this kind of material, I think it's Hella dope. Now I what my rap fan friends think when u fund a new rap project

😔
Dude, talking about beautiful use of drums, Mitch Mitchell's percussion in "Fire" by Jimi Hendrix is fitting for a song with that title. I think the fire Jimi was standing next to was generated by Mitch beating the hell out of his kit.

Strange.

As a person who has been into rock and metal music for a few years now, I really appreciate other people getting into it. There are some awesome bands that don't have the screamy vocals and still sound heavy.
Takes alot to admit that on the internet, good for you man!

TH-cam algorithm never fails i swear!!! This is literally how i feel now. There have been several bands i cannot stop listening to now. Gojira, Lamb Of God, Metalica, Exodus, i can go on and on and on. This was prolly rhe best decision i ever made! Rock on!!
🤘🏿
Bro... I used to be the same way with Channel X but one day I was clicking through I heard this song and it brought me to a new dimension of the phase of music
There’s a lot of sub genres of metal and rock you would and may not like.Genres like Thrash/Speed Metal definitely will get you pumped up like seriously make you energetic. When I listen to bands like Exodus my mind was blown. The album Bonded By Blood by Exodus was a masterpiece from the 80s.The 80s,a decade where extreme faster music was made.🤘🏾🎸
I got into rap late asf (2017 HS sophmore) so before that I was into lofi, edm, alt etc. Glad I never fell into a box where I only found rap entertaining to listen to, but I gotta say I can see why so many people fuck with it after having listened for like 6 years now. Definitely has this vibe to it that makes you wanna rap along and with all the complex flows and styles, it never gets old.
90’s-2000’s era of rap was peak
i'm just gonna throw in a small suggestion
ghost is more of a rock band, but i do recommend their live album. my personal favorite on that, has to be mummy dust.
Ceremony and devotion is just a work of art
Bruh it’s been the opposite for me, I had a rock and metal playlist for 10 months, got tired of it, now I’m listening to mostly rap
Exploring new genres is good. Gives you more appreciation for the best parts of both worlds.
Same bro
W video
Everyone should expand their music taste 🤞🏽
I saw your playlist my guy and oh my you've got good taste for somebody who doesn't listen to rock as much as hip hop
Rap just isn't innovative anymore, while hardcore is booming rn, emo is having a revival, and again - it's just pure fucking passion and emotion in this, while I feel rap and hip hop, just became a gateway to being a rich celebrity, rather than music itself.
fr i switched from rap to rock in 2020, rock's just better in terms of variability. We needa make it mainstream again
That’s the one thing I love about rock and metal. There’s always something for anybody you just need to find your sound.
Nice pfp bro
I agree. When you listen to rock / metal you need to find the right album or the right genre for you.
As a mostly rock fan, I love seeing people fully discovering this kind of material, I think it's Hella dope. Now I what my rap fan friends think when u fund a new rap project
