This show has a special place in everyone’s hearts.
The attention to detail of having the shadow of nibbler in the pilot is a good example of why the show was so good. I doubt they fully fleshed out his plotline at that point, but having the seeds of things like that and the kook with the 9 on his shirt that don't become significant until much later is rather impressive. It makes the entire original run worth watching just to catch those details.

Exactly what I was thinking. I remember, as I am an Australian, trying to explain to people in San Francisco (where I was at the time) that the millennium bug thing looked ok as Sydney seemed fine. They couldn’t comprehend that Australia had already entered 2000 and it was still early afternoon NYE in California. Eventually, I gave up…they were very, very, very confused.

What's worth noting is that since New New York was built on top of Old New York, this means the building would be on low elevation. A crater-like suburb

@@GamerKid64 I assume the Fox execs weren’t exactly okay with the joke. They were very strict when it came to pushing the envelope in terms of comedy.
One notable example is the joke where a cocaine-addicted man tried to buy some from a vending machine when it got stuck. They were BARELY able to squeeze that one in.
That’s a great start for Futurama. The intro to the very first episode. What a classic!

One small plothole was solved by the ending episodes. Do you see the ships leveling New York in the background? Well, Bender controls them. Of course he would avoid the building Fry is already frozen in (that still survives the rebuilding into NNY) because that would create a paradox where Bender doesn't return to the past to eliminate Fry.

As we all know the transition from 1999 to 2000 was not the end of the millennium. That happened a year later. I never got tired of pointing this out 24 years ago, and it won me many friends.
This scene is so well made, the frozen look on his face while the days, months, and years pass in the outside world plus the music just makes this a perfect scene.
I love how the Aliens didn't destroy the skyscraper that fry was frozen in

some people don’t like the later seasons, and i agree they could’ve been better. but the later seasons also had some of the best episodes of the series n i don’t regret watching them. i love the entire show and they ended it perfectly, they’re coming out w a new season soon hopefully they don’t ruin it.

Yes. But Seymour and Fry's family in 2 universes will see him again. Funny how universes in futurama are tied to 4 instance cycles. First two in cycle live and jump in time to kill the other 2. Remeber, the second one in cycle has no reason to kill hitler while time traveling because the first in cycle killed their hitler. This means that having both Hitler and Roosevelt alive, we live in first of 4 cycles therefore our Seymour and Fry's family will never see him again.

The fact that the 20th century didn't actually end until the 31sr December 2000, was a mistake made by lot of people.
The best first episode to anything ever.
Young people today will never know the joy of ringing in an entirely new millennium, or the irritation of know-it-all killjoys telling us that 2000 didn't count.
You can get away with that mindset in 1999, but you hide from truth forever. It was already known it was 2001 back then.
