    Great stuff and excellent presentation, as always, my friend! Beautiful knives! Oddly enough, I am one of "those guys" who doesn't really mind a secondary bevel. Many of LT Wright Knives have a micro bevel from their hard buffing and I usually put on a micro bevel with my stropping and ceramic rod use, as well. I like the fact that, IMHO, it seems strengthens the edge. Would be happy to see a axe and saw video, too! -Dave

    • @Woodswalker1965
      @Woodswalker1965  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      HighCarbonSteel Love Hey Dave! The Garberg primary bevel is quite rough and jagged. Maybe I just need to polish it up a bit or change the angle slightly as it seems to drag for me. Not a deal breaker for sure. Hmmmm. Those LTW's seem to treat you very well👌. I'll let you know how I make out my friend. Take care. Wade

      Great video Wade! Nice overview of the knives! I keep going back and forth about whether I want the Garberg simply because of the microbevel. I am a newbie at knife sharpening so not sure I want to deal with stainless steel and a microbevel

    • @Woodswalker1965
      @Woodswalker1965  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The Wimpy Camper Hey Michelle! Well a microbevel is pretty common actually, they are only slightly more difficult to sharpen. The good thing is you are sharpening less of the edge so it is much faster, make any sense lol?
      You're smart to give it some thought before diving in. If I do remove it I will let you know how the Garberg performs and if it was an improvement. Wade

      HighCarbonSteel Love I really appreciate you forgiving me. The Autosol is a great tip. I think it’s the same stuff we have in the UK marketed as Solvo-Autosol. I’ve used it for years on motorcycles but I do use it on knives, I put it on a rough/smooth flat strop mixed with jewellers rouge and stone oil. It gets a smooth finish. Thanks for that.
      Just watched your video on the Hultafor ok 4. I bought one along with my hula. Precision knife as cheap and cheerful but I’m very very impressed. The ok4 was £14 delivered and the precision was £7. I’ve paid way more for no better. The ok4 keeps an edge for ages and still comes back to hair popping sharp easy. I’m bad with high end flashlights as well and having noticed your first high end purchase of one I can only pray you don’t get that bug as bad as me. My wife looks at me like I’m crazy. I could light up a football stadium 😂

      @Woodswalker1965  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You're so right about the OK4 mate it's a fantastic blade isnt it? Comfy handle and easy to get scary sharp.
      Nothing to forgive buddy, nice chatting with you and heres a tip just show your wife every second flashlight and knife you buy lol! 👊🍻

    I have 3 cylinders for each of my 1858’s. I would load them with 25 grains of 3F Triple Seven (I save my real black powder for my flintlocks) with an lubricated Ox-Yoke wad between the power and ball. I store the cylinders in a ziplock bag with desiccant and Oxygen removal pouches to keep them dry. I pulled them down after a year because I shot one cylinder and notice recoil/power was fluctuating. I removed the nipples on one cylinder and dump “some” powder out through the nipple port. It was “clumpy” and then pushed the bullet out with a 1/8 wooden down and found at least half the power completely gummed up.
    I stopped doing that after that.

    Perfect set of knifes. I also love the Gransfors Bruks Small Forest Axe. I just purchased one and it should arrive in 2 days. I'm also carving my self a buck saw with a Bahco bowsaw blade. I think my next knife will be a Bark River Bushcrafter 3v.

    Great tools, every one of them. I removed the secondary bevel on my Garberg. It does require more frequent stropping with the true zero scandi and it's more prone to edge rolling during hard use, but it is crazy sharp.

    • @Woodswalker1965
      @Woodswalker1965  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      John Campbell Thanks John that's good to hear. I think I will try it out with a 0 degree scandi. I understand that a secondary bevel is stronger but it seems to hang up on me as I slice. Thanks for the input my friend!

    Interesting video. Good tips, especially for beginners.
    I have two main "bushcraft" tools:
    1. Council Tools Wood-Craft 19" handle axe (N. Carolina, USA)
    2. HELLE GT hunting knife with laminated blade (Norway)
    Of course my other "tools" are years of camping and knowledge of things like knots, lashings, navigation, emergency shelters, fire building and proper clothing for the season plus hunting and fishing skills. As a former ACA Moving Water instructor and Army ROTC Cadet winter survival instructor I feel very comfortable in the wilds on my own.
    Understand, I am a UL backpacker and back country skier using the latest and lightest gear that will get the job done well. Bush craft style camping is something I last did in the late '50s in the Boy Scouts. I can do it well but prefer backpacking stoves, silnylon tents and the lightest of other gear I can find. Synthetic clothes and other stuff is my preference.

    • @Woodswalker1965
      @Woodswalker1965  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for your input. I actually do both bushcraft and UL backpacking. If you search through some of my vids you will see some of the trails I've done.

    I can attest that Mora are great knives....I have some I've got and bought second hand that aren't even produced anymore but function quite well still!! I have one I bought new fifteen years ago and I never hesitate to take it along, sure it's no big cleaver but it has always made my meals and cleaned my game. Mora is a fair price for the quality but if lost can be replaced at a fair price unlike other blades (but would be unfortunate to lose of course). I do have more expensive blades but anyone who needs one to perform a Mora will suit them I think.

    • @Woodswalker1965
      @Woodswalker1965  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I couldnt agree more. More expensive knives are not necessarily better. Some are stronger, yes but most Moras can get the job done. Thanks for watching 👍

    A solid collection of tools. I value the Mora 2000 too, I know some people find the handle not wide enough but it suits my hands and that thin blade is tougher than it looks. When the Garberg came out I looked at knives in that price range and chose an Enzo Trapper instead, don't regret my choice as like you I wanted something a little finer (or less plastic) at the time. I'm in Europe at present so will stick to European knives for now as North American knives can be overpriced here (and I like European knives) though looking at your North American knives I'm looking forward to looking into them when I'm there.

    • @Woodswalker1965

    A couple of suggestions for tools you might want to check out…
    1) Morakniv Craftline Carpentry Chisel with Carbon Steel Blade, 3.0-Inch, Model Number: M-12250
    2) Bahco Heavy Duty Wrecking Knife with Rubberised Handle
    2448
    Both are similar in that they are chisel knives but the Mora is a true chisel grind and the Bahco is a V chisel. Both are square ended. The blade on the Bahco is slightly longer and more robust. I carry one of them most of the time in the woods for carving projects. I don’t baton wood but, if I did, the Bahco would be my preference.

    Beautiful knives! I am surprised you don't talk about the DH Russell Grohmann "Canadian" knife, which has his own design. My light bug-out kit blades consist of the D.H. Russell #4 carbon Belt Knife , a Falkniven WM1in VG10 steel as a neck knife, a Gerber Multi-Lock (like it better than my Leatherman), and a Silky Gomboy 240mm. If I have more space I will bring a Condor Carpenters Axe (who make a great Bushcraft axe). I recently bought a Silky Nata 240 to see if it can replace the axe for processing wood. It should be easier to carry, but have not tried it yet. Thanks for the great video.

      Thanks for watching and for the great comment my friend.🙏 You're very right a Kephart style knife is a very useful and field tested design. There is also a Pukko style still popular today.
      I mentioned that in "modern" bushcraft there are two major styles. The Pukko and Kephart would predate these but makes them no less relevant of course.
      I guess I should have been more clear about my reasoning.

    This isn’t a knock on you or your knives,but Bush crafting started out as a very simple way to enjoy the outdoors. Maybe a couple of good rugged knifes a simple axe and saw and an old military surplus canteen, canteen cup etc.Its popularity has turned it into a multi-million dollar business.Expensive custom made knives,$200 Swiss made axes, titanium cups and canteens.Its bush crafting gone high tech.The woods are turning into the Silicon Valley, and if you don’t or can’t afford the latest and greatest your out.

    • @Woodswalker1965
      @Woodswalker1965  5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      You're right, very little is needed to be effective out in the woods. You're point is well taken. Lately I have really been enjoying a Mora Companion HD, it's pretty awesome. I have fallen out of love with my Garberg ....The grind is not high enough so the relief edge is way to thick, it will also only get worse over time .
    I have plans to turn mine into a convex hybrid , gotta get some good water stones for the task .
    I have been eyeballing the Tops Brakimo since it came out. They now have two different scale options either rocky Mt tread or the plain scales .
    The edge geometry is excellent, a nice high scandi grind, its beautiful.

    • @Woodswalker1965
      @Woodswalker1965  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for watching and for the comment. Its well thought out! I can see what you mean, it is a bit of a beast actually. I removed the secondary bevel totally, it improved as a slicer but the edge also became a bit fragile of course. A scandi vex would probably work out better. Having said that I still like it a lot, I take it on canoe trips usually since its stainless steel. Thanks again!

    i’d love to get a fixed blade for camping, id like something a bit bigger than some of the knives you showed, do you have any suggestions?

      Thanks for watching my friend. Esee makes some bigger camp knives. Fallkniven makes the S1 and the A1 which are a bit bigger. The Terrava Skrama from Varustaleeka is a bigger chopper. I have a review coming up with a big chopper soon as well. Lots of options out there, just find one that suits you best.👍
