Nothing beats the quietness of a wood arrow.

Agreed there Mr. Carter, I'm from deep south Texas, super humid, hot and doug fir are my choice of woods for that exact reason.

    Robert,
Just bought 4 doz. Douglas Fir shafts from Surewood Arrows . I can't believe the straightness and weight consent they are ! I shoot carbon out of my recurves , but been watching your videos and bought 7 different longbows and just Love Shooting Them . They just shoot better with wood arrows !
    Stay Safe & Healthy !
    God Bless !
Keep the Great Videos Coming !

You can add a small leather spacer to your arrow plate like fred bear did if the arrows are to limber. Love those wood arrows . I have shot kustom kings with good results . Have a good day and god bliss.

Your videos of these Doug Fir wood arrows have convinced me to go this route. Thank you. Do you worry about low FOC when shooting these arrows? From what I’ve read is it’s hard to get a high FOC (Front of Center) with Doug Fir. How heavy of a broad head do you shoot?

This is great info. I’ve broken tons of cedar shafts right behind the point while stump shooting. I’m gonna have to try Douglas fir!

I’ve been shooting cedar for the last few years but went to Douglas firs this year and love them, can’t wait to hunt with them this fall

Hey Robert, I love my wood arrows. Mine are sitka spruce, very straight grained and spined for my 62# longbow. The last dozen I got are footed with 8" of heavy cherry wood for more FOC. Haven't tried Douglas fir shafts yet. Maybe my next batch. Love the videos from up here in Pa. Thanks

I'm hung on cedars since getting away from lodgepole pine. I shot aluminum most my life, they're great but once I tried wood, I love everything about them. Carbon? IMO, compound arrows! But I'm hankering to try some DF, most people seem to agree, they're the best compromise for an all around traditional arrow! I'm gonna try em soon.

I'll try some Douglas Fir, to resist the humidity where I live and hunt. I definately find wood more forgiving and enjoy shooting them more than carbon or aluminum. Have a blessed hunt!

love my wood arrows, can't remember if they are fir or spruce but they shoot awesome and yes, quieter. I'm not a great arrow maker either but make some that do great. Wish you a great hunt/scouting trip, hope you score a nice pig. Blessed we are my Brother

Great video! I just picked up some douglas firs that my buddy Seth Holland from Broken Shaft Archery made for me. I'll be shooting them from the Gator Donnie sent me to use. I'm thinking about gluing some Grizzlies on mine as well. Dendy is a great guy too! Good luck tomorrow and stay hydrated!

Wood arrows are definitely quieter .I love to make them ! And the feeling you get when you kill a nice deer with a cedar arrow you hand crafted is incredibly satisfying

Tulip poplar works well too. I make from boards purchased at HD or Lowes. About same weight/toughness as doug fir.

Hey Mr. Carter, I highly recommend you try some river cane shafts if you have not! They are by far my favorite for durability, they are easy to straighten, I believe their hollow nature allows them to recover faster off the string while still maintaining a 430- 450 grain arrow with 100 grains of magnus stinger up front (I fit a modern aluminum insert into the cane)

    • @robertcarte95
      @robertcarte95  ปีที่แล้ว

I have used rivercane from self bows. I have killed deer with cane arrows and stone points. Rivercane grows on my property they are to time consuming for me to build anymore. I have 15 with stone points on them now.

I make my own arrows and I'm kind of split between Nootka Cypress and Douglas fir. Here on the west coast Nootka is relatively easy to get so easy for me, to get.

Yes sir, I shot wood arrows between my transition from aluminum to carbon. Killed lots of deer and hogs with them. I stopped when I had one break on release. It dug into my left forearm pretty good. I will not go back to them unless I am forced to make self arrows. A limb or cane arrow is much safer because of the potential for grain run out in normal wood shafts. Used to there was some laminated ones but, for my money micro diameter carbon rules all other options for accuracy and penetration.

Southern Yellow Pine (catchall term for 4 species) will give you some very strong and very heavy shafts. Ash is another excellent choice for durability and mass, and I've heard good things about Hickory too. Oak as well, Tulip Poplar as mentioned elsewhere for a lighter strong arrow - similar to D.Fir in mass. Make sure the grain is straight, prefer the tighter grains, and you can't go wrong with any of these (+ I think D.Fir is king in performance mixed w/ price & availability).

Could you do a video on how you tune wood arrows? Do you start long and shorten?

Only thing good about cedar arrows is how they smell when you break one. I’ve been making and using Douglas fir arrows for years and you can’t beat ‘em. Mine don’t look as good as yours though! Thanks for the video.

The Most durable arrows of wood or similar natural I have seen in video are the Bamboo arrows and I bet where you live, like with Clay Hays in winter at grandparents in Florida he can find the materials in thin enough shaft to work, look up his videos for how to do this if you do not already. Another I have seen that is durable is using rose stems but the lower part of the vining bush type however, that is a challenge to work with as most have to burn the outer layer off to have the arrow shaft to work with and not end up injured.

  • @timrichmond5226

Wooden arrows further enhance the directness of the shoot, the archer removing the bow and arrow from any consideration and it's just the hunter and beast.
