42 years shooting a compound, bought a cheap 60" longbow last summer and its the most fun I've had in years. Considering your carbon vapor long bow when I move up in quality as I think its a very cool looking bow! Shooting 40lbs comfortably now so will probably go mid 40's. This is making me want to buy a traditional bow! May have to invest in one and try it out. I’ve always had so much respect for the guys that shoot trad.
It will change your life no joke! I hunted compound for years and traditional never quit calling me it’s just a very addictive hobby that’s for sure 👍🏻
I shot compound for many years but would always injure myself (over bowed and crappy form) 8 years ago got into trad and have been enjoying it on a whole different level! For what its worth I have an ilf bow which I found to be helpful in that I can try different limb lbs and lengths without breaking the bank.
@@instinctiveaddictionarcher8998 I have 2 40-lb recurves, one is I think the average length (used to be dad's) and one is shorter, like 26 inches I think. I'm using 500 spine arrows that are 28". I currently have 3 different head shapes that are different lengths,, but weigh about the same. Is there a particular weight (or grains, whatever) I should use?
Very good info for a beginner like myself. I'm not coming from compounds and leaning more toward the longbow. Also appreciated your message at the end of the video.
Went to recurve only in 2005 and gravitated to hybrid style longbows for the things you mentioned. Will you guys ever come to ETAR? Fr what it's worth that 62" bow sounded quieter in your video. Thanks for sharing your faith and spending God's good news!
Thank you for your videos they are very helpful and informative. It’s also wonderful to hear you praise our Lord Jesus. Blessings to you and your family.
Thank you for your faith and witness, it is very refreshing. By the way, I learned more from two of your videos than from reading Traditional Archery for 4 years. Jesus is coming soon.
I’m 6’4” , 205lbs. Most people assume I have a 29-30 draw. Actually, it’s 28.5”. I’ve got narrow shoulders(thanks a lot dad) so my “wing span” is short relative to my height.
Amazing information. Thank you so much. I know nothing about shooting arrows, it seems like I am a natural when I shoot arrows a few years ago for the first time in my life I was hitting the targets from around 50m away like crazy. I will take your advice and go get my self a good bow 😀
I have wished I could find a shoot in my area but I haven't found one within a reasonable drive. Every bow I have shot I have had to buy. I have shot some nice bows but have yet to find the right one. The closest so far has been a 62in win&win black wolf. I just ordered some longbow limbs which will make my 17in ilf riser into a 64in longbow. I am also ordering g a 21in riser to try both the recurve and longbow limbs on. It is expensive to search bows this way but it has still been fun
Hello, Very interesting video!! I’m a real archery novice and have a question that maybe you can answer. About a year or two ago I wanted to start shooting the bow. I went to a bow shop and asked the owner which type of bow would be good as a starter. Without measuring anything he sold me a beautiful Oak Ridge Dymond 62” 35 Lbs. I started shooting this bow and in the beginning it seemed to be enjoyable. After a few weeks the middle finger of my right hand got numb (I wear finger protection). And overall it felt like I was overpulling the bow. I almost couldn’t believe that 35 Lbs was so damn hard to pull. I almost started to hurt my shoulder muscles. What began as something enjoyable became a lot less enjoyable in a few days time. I went back to the shop and the (so called experienced) owner told me maybe 35 Lbs was a little bit to heavy for a beginner. Again nothing got measured or explained. So he sold me a second bow, also a Oak Ridge, but now a Hardwood 62” 25 Lbs. He told me that, once I got used to this lighter pull, shooting the 35 Lbs wouldn’t be a problem anymore. At that point my trust in that guy was still large enough to believe him. Silly me!! Shooting the new bow was easier, but I still had problems with my middle finger, my left shoulder and my left arm constantly got hit by the string. I read information on websites and watched videos on YT, hoping to find what I was doing wrong. I tried this and that, but nothing worked. So I thought maybe I just wasn’t going to be able to enjoy that fun sport. Then, not so long ago I started reading (and watching) the more technical stuff about bow types, draw length and draw weight. In doing so I discovered that maybe the two bows I have could be to short for me. I determined and measured my draw length. When I spread my arms and measure from fingertip to fingertip, my span is about 2000 millimetres. Divided by 2.5 and again by 2.54, my draw length is 31,48”. Measuring on a pulled arrow, my draw length is 32,67”. I really think that, when I look at my draw length (31,5-32,6 inches), a 62 inch bow is to short for me. If that’s not the case, then everything I read, see and hear on the internet about draw length isn’t something I can trust. When I search for longer bows, I find lengths up to 74 inch, so I think these will be produced for shooters who have a longer draw length. I know I will still make mistakes with a bow that’s longer, and I know that only good advice by a trainer or experienced archer can help me further, but I also know that my 62” bows really get overstretched (I’m sure 25 lbs isn’t 25 lbs anymore and the same for the 35 lbs) when I draw it full length. And it’s not that the time between the moment of full length draw and release is very short when I practice. I still try to aim as good as possible and that takes time, certainly for a novice like me. And maybe this, combined with the shorter bow partially makes for the overstressing of my muscles. Now finally my questions. Could it be that both bows just are way to short for me? And, what advice can I get on which bow to buy? Thanks!!
How would someone go about visiting your archery shop and getting help tuning a bow and building some arrows for it ? Love your videos such and inspiration!!!
And to you and your family keep shooting. I am just about to start field archery up again after 30 years. Thinking about getting a bear take down, would you recommend them and the bow
Hello trad friend, I'm 6 ft. Tall 187 lbs. I'm shooting a 66" Pearson Havalina recurve , 55 lb. , I'm 62 and had heart surgery that left me very weak so I'm not able to handle that weight right now , but I have collected 14 vintage recurve bows over the years and I can shoot right or left hand bows, I have a 45 lb. Redwing hunter I may give a try now, or a Pearson Golden souvreign . I love my old traditional bows , some are older than me and still in good shooting condition
Speaking of choosing a Longbow or Recurve, will you guys be going to ETAR in PA this summer? I realize it's a bit far for you guys, but it would be a great opportunity for us Trad folks to try out your different bows, and it would be great for your new business since I believe it is the biggest traditional archery gathering in North America.
So I’m REALLY trying to decide what to buy for my return to traditional archery. I shot for a minute 25yrs ago but it didn’t stick. I’m all in at moment but don’t wanna dump a bunch of money on a black widow or Hoyt satori until I figure out just what would be best. I’m looking at the good old black hunter or the Tbow models to possibly start off with. Tbow due to ilf system and more options for tuning accessories. Also hear they are super smooth drawing bows like the satori. Black hunter for the option of either longbow or recurve limbs. I’m 5’9 w/28” draw and shoot a 73lb compound. I’m thoroughly confused what to choose to start and fully expect to transition to a high end bow after tinkering w/some cheaper versions. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!!
Absolutely, there are lots of great shooting bows cheap, ones I’ve tried and really liked were the Fleetwood and the Bearpaw from 3rivers also the Bear Grizzly all shoot very well for the price 👍🏻
Just happened upon your video.. I love your message and how you delivered it.. I have a few old bows that could be cleaned up a bit and put to use.. I also have a mini crossbow that I need some bolts for.. this video has also reminded me to pray.. don’t get me wrong, I pray, but I could probably pray a lot more often..
This one is interesting because was talking about this in a Facebook archery page i belong to. Now as im learning im learning on a recurve bow, my draw at 5,11 my draw lengh is 27inch. Now i love shooting my samick sage bow, but a few pointed out to not get a bow until youve done youre course, because you may find you actually shoot better or prefer traditional long bow. Im abit stubborn lol but im also a humbe guy, so i understand what they mean, but most know a samick sage is around 100 dollors or 100 uk, where im at. So in my opinion theres nothing wrong with shooting all different types of bows, why just stick to just one, the fun is they shoot different, so why not have a few styles in youre draw. Thats just my opinion as i honestly at this point cant see myself having a huge preference, infact i would like to own different types of bows and enjoy them for what they are.
Good day Jeff. Bought my first longbow last year. 53# at 29". I draw 28,5. My question. I shoot about 40 arrows out it then I am spent. Muscles flitching I cannot keep the fine tune on my aim. Yes I am a gap shooter. Would you say that is being overbowed.
I am not Jeff, but it's been three weeks.... Yes and no. I would say no if just hunting since you will not need to shoot 40 arrows. But ONLY if you are already accurate enough to make a humane kill. But yes if you want to shoot your bow a lot, which is needed for better accuracy. I see many folks have a "practice" or "target" bow, and then a "hunting bow". (or just different limbs on the same riser) This is much like what some do with long range rifle shooting. It is easier to get good skill and accuracy with a less recoil rifle, and the ammo costs less... then have a rifle with more recoil but that you will shoot less, but use the same skills learned on the other rifle. I hope that made sense. If you look around TH-cam you will see many archers do the "I hunt with a 50-60 lb bow, but spend most of my time shooting with a 35-45 lb bow because it is easier, and I can shoot more without getting worn out." Then before hunting season, they do a refresh with their higher pound bow to remember how IT shoots. But their foundations are still the same. Hope this helps, cheers.
1:17 - LOL! Listen to this guy, he's not lying. My compound is 70lbs at 80% let off but that is child's play to traditional weight. I went with a 60lb recurve because I wanted to start with something close to my compound's weight, and yeah, it isn't something to be trifled with as a starting weight. It burnt me up when I first got it (inner forearm could speak for that). Maybe shot it 10 or so times before taking it back in until the next day due to it wearing me out. I couldn't hit the broadside of a barn at 5-10 yards. But as a novice (and humbly still am), I was shooting my carbon arrows from my compound with plastic fletchings and wasn't using an arm guard or tab. So I had blisters on my fingers and a nasty bruise constantly until I wizened up and went and bought some feather fletched arrows with a leather guard and tab. So before you start putting away your traditional bow as something you think you'll never master, make sure it isn't the equipment causing your issues in the first place, because once you do start hitting the target then it is like pure dopamine to the brain. After a year of sending many arrows, I'm now pushing 20 yards and could shoot the 60lb recurve for hours without tiring and all archery enthusiasts should at least give traditional archery a go for it is the father of all archery today.
I am thinking about getting into target/ hunting >> I am a saved person..I am 5ft 7 , 240lbs what size bow and weight do you think I should get .. tks and be blessed..👍
Great video Jeff. How heavy a poundage bow would be reccomended for Alaskan moose and grizzly . I live in a real moosey area. And while it's not overrun with grizzly. There are plenty around, not far away. I'm pretty settled on the Samick Sage. And trying to decide on how heavy to go with. And how hard it will be to shoot well. 5'9" , 220 lb timber faller. I don't want to buy a bow with some light weight limbs that end up being less than useful in a short period of time.
Hmm, well from experimenting with cheaper bows nothing out performs the Toparchery 60” recurve on Amazon for a little over $100 with a good TTT string and replacing the thin felt limb gaskets with Velcro they’re silent and super fast bows, the three I’ve tested with 45# limbs were pushing 200fps with 9gpp arrows and upper 180’s with heavier arrows, they’re hard to beat and look really good but the sage is a time proven bow I’d probably go with either 45 or 50# limbs and shoot a sharp two blade like a Simmons or Stinger Buzzcut 👍🏻
@@instinctiveaddictionarcher8998 Thank you very much ! I imagine that getting a bow and shooting a bull moose or bear with it may seem like skydiving without a parachute. But they walk through my yard here. Not hard to get within 20 yards of them and sometimes they are much closer. I've been living in and hunting in Alaska since 78 continuously. Almost entirely close range rifle. I am looking forward to rabbit and grouse hunting with my bow . Which will be the deciding factor on when I can big game hunt with it. I'm trying to find a bow shop in my area but so far no success with that. So you tube is where I'm learning everything. Thank you for your videos. I really enjoy them and learn from everyone of them
Sir. Just waiting for my 1st bow. I’m Asian 5’5” tall about 180 Lbs. I already ordered Mandarin duck Black hunter 35 Lbs bow and extra limbs 55 Lbs recurve bow it’s that right. ?
Have big jim thunderchild longbow 56 amo,50 lb @28. Im 25.5 inch draw. 500 spine cut at 27.5 with total 225 up front. Any other suggestions on arrow build for better flight. It shoots good as is
You should be good right there but it may actually handle a little more point weight maybe 50 grains or so and that would be even better because even adding that much to your total arrow weight will give it a quieter shot and even more penetration yet you really won’t loose any noticeable speed 👍🏻
Hey Jeff, does the design of a bow cause you to draw different draw lengths? For example my draw is 30”. Will it be 30” with both a recurve and a longbow! Thanks, Ron
Usually no but some bows have a thicker grip which could very slightly increase it but not enough to really consider, just like black widow gives several wrist angle options and unless you’re shooting off the heal it can’t really increase but make sure you measure your draw correctly which is from the front of the riser in a normal not overdrawn position like you’d normally shoot, the measurement from the front of the riser to throat of the nock is your true draw length with traditional bows 👍🏻
I'm looking to get into the sport and I am a 50-year-old guy about the same height and weight as you and I ordered this and I wish I would have watched your video ahead of time as I might not have looked for the deal to get but I got a great deal on this on Amazon for like 30% off so it's a 55 lb Samick Sage Archery Takedown Recurve Bow 62 inch- Have you heard of the brand and do you know if they make good bows? Would you suggest anything to add on to it besides a silencer?
They’re actually one of the top rated entry level bows and do shoot well, I’m thinking you’ve probably ordered too heavy poundage to start but maybe not, I struggle with 55# after a few shots lol but as far as silencing goes the best thing to do is order a TTT string for it or one of the other premium strings out there with wool puffs, other than that they’re pretty quiet 👍🏻
@@instinctiveaddictionarcher8998 I'm taking your advice and I ordered extra limbs 35 lb it cost me an extra $80 with tax on Ebay but I got free shipping at least... I wanted to make it enjoyable and if it's too much work at 55 lb which I'm guessing it would be right away then I would never use it so that's why I thought I would spend that extra and I got the ball originally for a great deal anyways on Amazon I think I save 30 bucks and paid about $120 or something for it
This may be a strange question but do you know if you can do offsetting limbs for instance I do my 35 lb on the top and my 55 lb on the bottom would that work at all or be to janky?
@@ericgreen1079 lol I’ve never tried it but I wouldn’t think it would work being that far apart in weight, the tiller adjustment usually only makes about 2.5 pounds difference between the two limbs.

I’m getting nock left am I close to where I need to be or so I need to change spines I’ve been told it’s too stiff and it’s bouncing off the riser. Any input would be much appreciated
I'm using a bear super grizzly. It's 58". I'm 6'3, 220 with 30" draw. 45# at 28" but it's more like 53#. Is this bow too small for me? Bear doesn't make a 62" recurve
Sir. Just waiting for my 1st bow. I’m Asian 5’5” tall about 180 Lbs. I already ordered 35 Lbs bow and extra limbs 55 Lbs recurve bow it’s that right. ?
@@TH-camrkit7 congratulations! I honestly think you are going to want to shoot lighter than 55# limbs but it greatly depends on your actual draw length and strength, most people start out at 35-40# with a recurve and develop a consistent shot process that works well for them but you’ll have fun for sure!

I've always been more of a traditional guy myself, but am thinking about starting compound.
Praise GOD Thank you great video. Especially sharing The Gospel
Very good info for a beginner like myself. I'm not coming from compounds and leaning more toward the longbow. Also appreciated your message at the end of the video.
This is very informative for the beginners moving to intermediate! Thank you!
Jeff. You have earned my business. I will be calling and ordering a bow soon.
Thank you!
Went to recurve only in 2005 and gravitated to hybrid style longbows for the things you mentioned. Will you guys ever come to ETAR? Fr what it's worth that 62" bow sounded quieter in your video. Thanks for sharing your faith and spending God's good news!
Yes sir we’re planning on ETAR 👍🏻
Thank you for your videos they are very helpful and informative. It’s also wonderful to hear you praise our Lord Jesus. Blessings to you and your family.
Great breakdown! Looking forward to that call when you get down the list!
Yes sir!
Thank you for your faith and witness, it is very refreshing. By the way, I learned more from two of your videos than from reading Traditional Archery for 4 years. Jesus is coming soon.
Just found your channel. Loved the instruction and the sharing of the message of Jesus. ❤
Thank you sir!
I’m 6’4” , 205lbs. Most people assume I have a 29-30 draw. Actually, it’s 28.5”. I’ve got narrow shoulders(thanks a lot dad) so my “wing span” is short relative to my height.
Would you please give more info on the first bow in this video, and the price range if possible. Beautiful bow. Thanks.
Amazing information. Thank you so much. I know nothing about shooting arrows, it seems like I am a natural when I shoot arrows a few years ago for the first time in my life I was hitting the targets from around 50m away like crazy. I will take your advice and go get my self a good bow 😀
Great information, can't wait to get mine.
Wow preaching Jesus at the end ✝️🙏 May YVHV bless you brother!
Thank you!
Hello,
Very interesting video!!
That was an excellent video Jeff! You guys are top shelf.
Just starting out the trad experience. Like it alot.
Excellent work, you explained everything very well.
Thank you sir!
Thank you for you honest input. I'm going to follow your advice.
Yes sir thanks for watching my friend!
thank you very informative. I actually learned something thanks for keeping it simple.
Really enjoy your videos they are so informative mate, thanks👍
Thank you so much!
Can you list the bow models and where to get them?
Once again, this is the finest trad archery channel on youtube, by far!
Me gusto el primero ese arco por el formato de las palas y la enpuñadura
Love your videos, please keep doing it🙏
Great video mate, could you please tell me what the first bow is? It's gorgeous.
I have a 62 inch bow at 45 pounds at 28 inch draw. My draw length close to 30, not sure if this bow the right fit for me.
God bless you 2 my friend. Love from England
Thank you and Merry Christmas to you my friend!
And to you and your family keep shooting. I am just about to start field archery up again after 30 years. Thinking about getting a bear take down, would you recommend them and the bow
@@williamraybould8393 very nice especially the Eichler riser!
Great thank you looks like that's the one then
Hello trad friend, I'm 6 ft.
Man that’s awesome! I love the old vintage bows myself!
Yes sir we are planning to be there 👍🏻
@@instinctiveaddictionarcher8998 That is absolutely awesome news!! Looking forward to seeing you there Jeff ;-).
Amen! God bless Brother!
Thank you Jeff for your informative video. I have a question for your. I am 187cm tall and 105Kg. Which bow I should chose?
Just happened upon your video.. I love your message and how you delivered it.. I have a few old bows that could be cleaned up a bit and put to use.. I also have a mini crossbow that I need some bolts for.. this video has also reminded me to pray.. don’t get me wrong, I pray, but I could probably pray a lot more often..
Thanks so much for watching God Bless!
Amen! Love this.
Excellent video!
What type and name of shooting glove
and where can a person buy one.
A samick sage is a great starter bow 💯
Thanks!
You’re welcome brother!
@@thewhiskeycowboy-official I think you naild it for me. Thanks!
The long bow does me fine .
Great video. 👍Stay safe my friend. God bless you 🙏.
Amen brother how much are your bows

Thank you very much !

I love my recurve. With that being said I shoot the longbow better. My decision was made. Haven’t looked back since
That’s how a lot of guys feel!
Whats more durable? Recurve or longbow
Longbow for sure 👍🏻
Love that you acknowledge God. Won me over.
Amen and thank you sir!
Will you be at ETAR this year?
Have big jim thunderchild longbow 56 amo,50 lb @28. Im 25.5 inch draw. 500 spine cut at 27.5 with total 225 up front. Any other suggestions on arrow build for better flight. It shoots good as is
You should be good right there but it may actually handle a little more point weight maybe 50 grains or so and that would be even better because even adding that much to your total arrow weight will give it a quieter shot and even more penetration yet you really won’t loose any noticeable speed 👍🏻
Great information..
Awesome video very informative
Thank you!
What kind of glove do you use to shoot
Most informative video of it's kind.
Thank you so very much!
I'm looking to get into the sport and I am a 50-year-old guy about the same height and weight as you and I ordered this and I wish I would have watched your video ahead of time as I might not have looked for the deal to get but I got a great deal on this on Amazon for like 30% off so it's a 55 lb Samick Sage Archery Takedown Recurve Bow 62 inch-
Have you heard of the brand and do you know if they make good bows?
@@ericgreen1079 yes sir you’re going to be glad you got those, it’ll be a great set for developing your shot process 👍🏻
@@ericgreen1079 lol I’ve never tried it but I wouldn’t think it would work being that far apart in weight, the tiller adjustment usually only makes about 2.5 pounds difference between the two limbs.
What about 24/25” draw length on compound? How does that translate into trad bows?
Yes sir traditional is always going to be about one inch shorter that a compound with a loop and a release 👍🏻
Can you send me some info, intrested in buying a bow
Excellent advice. 👍👍👍👍👍
Thank you sir!
Do you have a website to see and purchase your bows? Thank you
Thank you sir but no, we stopped the bow production last year and sold the equipment however I’ve been collecting as many of them as possible so let me know what specs you’re looking for and I also know where a couple are that can be purchased possibly thanks!
Love the channel bud I watch your videos daily. I have a red stag. Brace height is set at 7.5”. It’s a 50# I draw 29.5. I have some blemished gold tip 400s cut to 30” with 100 grain inserts and 200 grain field points. I’m getting nock left am I close to where I need to be or so I need to change spines I’ve been told it’s too stiff and it’s bouncing off the riser. Any input would be much appreciated
Do you mean nock left leaving the bow, or nock left at impact? If at impact, how far away is your target?
Both. The correct answer is always both.
I'm using a bear super grizzly. It's 58". I'm 6'3, 220 with 30" draw. 45# at 28" but it's more like 53#. Is this bow too small for me? Bear doesn't make a 62" recurve

@@TH-camrkit7 congratulations!
