I still think people are gonna end up homeschooling their kids or putting them into Christian schools. That’s what my parents did. And I was so sheltered that I thought a gay man was a man that didn’t wear a belt and kept their hair longer than above their ears. I thought slaves deserved to be enslaved, were all lazy and thugs. I’m black. But that’s what my fundamentalist baptist school taught me to believe so I would study for hours. I never spoke at school and my white teachers all loved to use me as an example of a good little christian girl. But I never played outside. I never smiled. Afraid to watch tv outside of 700 club or whatever my parents picked - old corny hallmark movies. I was heavily punished for trying to watch Japanese anime. I didn’t wear pants until I was 20 because I thought I’d go to hell. I didn’t approach men because I was taught they had to ask my parents for permission to converse with me. I was afraid to drive, afraid to go online, afraid of non Christians. I got accepted into a top university but my parents still tried to make me go to Liberty University - even though the non christian university was way better and had a 98% graduation and career path success plan. I’m glad I didn’t go to Liberty. I doubt I’d have a job now. All my female friends that went have 5 or more kids with a controlling husband or they are unmarried, depressed stuck at home. Now I’m successful and they want to flaunt my success on facebook but I really struggled a lot outside of academics due to how sheltered I was. Anyway, for anyone thinking of putting their kids into Christian school out of fear of the public education system - keep in mind the possible consequences that might have on the child developmentally and socially.
My adult friends who were home schooled don't know anything about biology or evolution or any sciences. They think we evolved from monkeys when we did not. They never have had a decent well rounded education.

They either micromanage it and teach nothing of value, or just throw books at the kid they think are appropriate and walk away. Homeschooling when decent public schooling is available is yet another form of child abuse, leading their own child's life to be worse than it had to be. Supplementary after-school help with studies by parents is good, as long as the parent knows their stuff and/or is willing to learn.
It's why our education system is garbage on the international scale. We're too busy worried about gender identity rather than general studies like math, science and language.

Couldn’t disagree more! As a gay person who was not taught about sexuality in my home, it would have been nice to learn about sexual orientation in school during my early years. Like most gay people I knew I was gay very young and it would have been nice to hear it in school and know that it’s ok from a teacher especially with all the LGBTQ bullying that goes on in schools.

Meanwhile, Florida is also trying to ban parents from taking their teenage children to drag shows. What happened to parental rights there? And this sort of escalation is exactly what we've been warning about. Once this passes, the next year they will pass a law that bans drag shows altogether. I teach biology in FL and teaching these topics was not allowed in high school even before this bill was passed. Completely unnecessary culture war politics.

You can have your communities if the parents approve of their child being a part of them. Going behind the parents back by allowing teachers to have secret education and conversations that the parents don’t know about is the problem. I think it's also about trying to make parental powers absolute. Right now parents have to share power over their kids with schools but some parents (a small minority) want to have absolute power and that no one can say anything to THEIR child that they don't like. They don't care if that harms other children or how screwed up their talking points are treating children as property. If history has taught us anything it's that giving anyone absolute power over someone submissive to them is a really, really bad thing.
It needs to be pointed out that Desantis is an Italian Roman Catholic, that 100% explains his LGBTQ hostility. Separation of Church and State! We are a democracy, not a theocracy.
I'm not a fan of laws like this, but at the same time I have met enough irresponsible and bizarrely ideological teachers that I feel like the state of Florida has no choice. I think alot of people who have been out of education for decades hear news stories about this and automatically assume the worst of the parents and politicians trying to get some kind of regulations in place, but they don't understand just how strange and even authoritarian some American educators have become. I can still remember how my social studies teacher found a way to pivot from talking about the Italian renaissance to going on a five-minute rant about how the second amendment isn't an individual right and these days you can hop on twitter and find teachers chastising their students for discussing their negative experiences during the covid lockdowns, the students aren't saying the lockdowns were unnecessary just that they would have preferred to go to prom.
I wish we didn't have to do this either but I have also witnessed first hand the truly insane and disgusting behavior of some of these teachers. It makes me nauseous to think about it. They are essentially grooming children into their radical ideology which I consider a mental illness.
The meaning of the second amendment has been debated almost from the day it was written. It includes "the right to an armed militia". It DOES NOT say everyone has the right to own guns, but has been interpreted to mean that. So your teacher was actually correct.

I have heard a lot of people mention them, haven't seen any though. I do know of the nearly 40 year long crusade to privatize the US educational system though. To make it a profit extracting device just like the healthcare system. And there is plenty wrong with the US school system. Mainly the really dumb idea of paying school lunches, chronic underfunding, the way schools are funded which is a leftover from Jim Crow, the bane of legacy admissions and so on. Also having massively overworked teachers who don't make enough to make ends meet. This isn't a unique strategy, the UK is right now doing the same things to sabotage the NHS to try to privatize it.

Does this include heterosexuality as a sexual identity? If so, they cant be reading books about princes and princesses either or anything about opposite sex relationships. I still think people are gonna end up homeschooling their kids or putting them into Christian schools. That’s what my parents did. And I was so sheltered that I thought a gay man was a man that didn’t wear a belt and kept their hair longer than above their ears. I thought slaves deserved to be enslaved, were all lazy and thugs.

But that’s what my fundamentalist baptist school taught me to believe so I would study for hours. I never spoke at school and my white teachers all loved to use me as an example of a good little christian girl. But I never played outside. I never smiled. Afraid to watch tv outside of 700 club or whatever my parents picked - old corny hallmark movies. I was heavily punished for trying to watch Japanese anime.
I didn’t wear pants until I was 20 because I thought I’d go to hell. I didn’t approach men because I was taught they had to ask my parents for permission to converse with me. I was afraid to drive, afraid to go online, afraid of non Christians.
I got accepted into a top university but my parents still tried to make me go to Liberty University - even though the non christian university was way better and had a 98% graduation and career path success plan. I’m glad I didn’t go to Liberty. I doubt I’d have a job now. All my female friends that went have 5 or more kids with a controlling husband or they are unmarried, depressed stuck at home.
Now I’m successful and they want to flaunt my success on facebook but I really struggled a lot outside of academics due to how sheltered I was.
Anyway, for anyone thinking of putting their kids into Christian school out of fear of the public education system - keep in mind the possible consequences that might have on the child developmentally and socially.
My adult friends who were home schooled don't know anything about biology or evolution or any sciences. They think we evolved from monkeys when we did not. They never have had a decent well rounded education.

Homeschooling when decent public schooling is available is yet another form of child abuse, leading their own child's life to be worse than it had to be. Supplementary after-school help with studies by parents is good, as long as the parent knows their stuff and/or is willing to learn.

The schools are doing this, there are plenty of schools that have been exposed to have policies to not tell the parents the kids want to transition or anything of the sort so the school can keep the parent in the dark. The schools also have gay porn novels in the library.
Dearborn Michigan (which is right around the corner from me) had a MASSIVE group of middle eastern families show up and force their way into the school board meeting over giving out gay porn books in class. Couldn’t disagree more! As a gay person who was not taught about sexuality in my home, it would have been nice to learn about sexual orientation in school during my early years. I've been a human for 10 years. The government is passing a law banning murder!!! I've have never seen a case of murder as a person my whole life. I know murder is a bad act that could happen at any time. But it hasn't happened yet, why would the government ban something that hasn't happened yet.

When you went to let's say high school, were you familiar with your teachers sexual orientation? Did they tell and teach the entire class about their sexual orientation? So you don't believe that parents have any rights to know or control what their very young children are being taught? This bill, levels the field by simply not allowing Gender identity discussion to school children period. I grew up in the late 70’s to early 80’s. Teachers never spoke about their personal life, much less their sex life. Sex education was very brief 30 minute discussion in the 5th grade about the act of sex nothing more. I am so very thankful glad In fact, that I choose not to have kids. I don’t have to worry about sending them to school in this crazy,everyone gets to force their beliefs on others , environment!

I think it's also about trying to make parental powers absolute. Right now parents have to share power over their kids with schools but some parents (a small minority) want to have absolute power and that no one can say anything to THEIR child that they don't like. They don't care if that harms other children or how screwed up their talking points are treating children as property.
If history has taught us anything it's that giving anyone absolute power over someone submissive to them is a really, really bad thing.

I'm not a fan of laws like this, but at the same time I have met enough irresponsible and bizarrely ideological teachers that I feel like the state of Florida has no choice. I think alot of people who have been out of education for decades hear news stories about this and automatically assume the worst of the parents and politicians trying to get some kind of regulations in place, but they don't understand just how strange and even authoritarian some American educators have become. I can still remember how my social studies teacher found a way to pivot from talking about the Italian renaissance to going on a five-minute rant about how the second amendment isn't an individual right and these days you can hop on twitter and find teachers chastising their students for discussing their negative experiences during the covid lockdowns, the students aren't saying the lockdowns were unnecessary just that they would have preferred to go to prom.
I wish we didn't have to do this either but I have also witnessed first hand the truly insane and disgusting behavior of some of these teachers. It makes me nauseous to think about it.

The meaning of the second amendment has been debated almost from the day it was written. It includes "the right to an armed militia". It DOES NOT say everyone has the right to own guns, but has been interpreted to mean that. So your teacher was actually correct.

Does this include heterosexuality as a sexual identity? If so, they cant be reading books about princes and princesses either or anything about opposite sex relationships. I agree kids shouldn't be shown explicit sexual stuff or gender identity stuff at that age (and let's be honest, none of this is happening on any widespread level, there might be a spotty singular news article about one teacher here and there), but as long as both sides are treated equally I don't care. I just think adults with no association with queerness have no idea how much heterosexuality is forced on children in everyday life. @@jojofashosho5344 That makes me take less issue with it. Now I do have an issue with them extending it to 12th grade. I learned sexuality in the 90's in fifth grade. I do think understanding sex before you're sexual is important so you can protect yourself and others.
