School district bans books on Rosa Parks and Malala. Now students want answers

  • Students in a southern Pennsylvania school district are battling the latest example of panic spreading over how history and race are taught in schools across the US.
"I don't think a moral compass will let you ban books about equality and loving each other," Central York High School senior Christina Ellis told CNN.
Ellis is among the students protesting a book ban in York, Pennsylvania, and questions whether the officials who decided to remove certain reading materials from the curriculum even read the resources they deem controversial. She was joined by other teens protesting in front of Central York High School this week.
On Monday, students, parents and other community members debated during a virtual school board meeting about the list of anti-racism books and resources that were banned from the curriculum by the Central York school board last year.
Last October, the all-White school board unanimously banned a list of educational resources that included a children's book about Rosa Parks, Malala Yousafzai's autobiography and CNN's Sesame Street town hall on racism. CNN's Evan McMorris-Santoro reports.

As a german and a scholar of history, let me tell you, after banning books, the burning isn't usually far off; btw: did I like hearing and learning about the atrocities my ancestors did in the 20th century, heck no! But do I feel guilty, not at all, because those things happened long before I was even born! But I will feel guilty, if I and my generation are forgetting about it or let it happen again!

Most countries have done evil, at some point, like the English starving the Irish. The Germans, murdering the Jewish people and others. Children must learn about these horrors, and especially the subtle changes that happened just before hand. Those who know, can see that we are heading down a terrible path at the moment. It is not the people, but what they are lead to believe. We must support free speech, critical thinking and respect for individual creativity. We must not comply to anything that seems sick or perverse.

The ridiculous thing is that Hidden Figures is inspirational for anyone who is not from a rich background, because it teaches that, so long as you have skill and determination, you can achieve anything - regardless of your race or gender. Unless the board of this school district (& the parents that support them) are modern day Vanderbilts, then this ban takes inspiration away from *their* children, as well as children of colour.
The telling part, though, was when they said they wanted to "freeze" usage until they could review the books and, in a year, they still haven't done it. That's either admitting blatant racism or that they can't read... (or possibly both...) 🤦‍♀️

My grandpa reminded me to truely learn history because for those who don't are doomed to repeat it again. And with everything going on I understand why he told me this repeatedly. I am mixed race Mexican and American. My elementary teachers were Native Americans and Mexican. I am grateful they gave us the truth as painful as it is. I received death threats for speaking Spanish the other day . I have LGBT friends and friends with people of all different nationalities. I feel we are actually living in pre Germany in the the 1930s. And I remember that poem they came! I'm 29 years old and I am using my voice to advocate the truth . History can be rewritten and should be written by the people it effected! Not the victors! I'm glad to see the youth is becoming aware of how they are trying to bring back book banning. They have a crystal clear idea of what is really going on! Keep that vision please! We are better than division and book bannings and discrimination. We are love ! The people implementation of this is hate. The world needs love not hate !

"I don't want my child to feel guilty about being white."
Then sit down and talk about it. Don't ignore this. Someone has to teach your child about the world and their place in it. As a parent, THAT'S YOUR JOB. If you don't want teachers and school boards and tv shows and the internet to teach them, sit down and have the hard conversations!
Being white is a privilege. That doesn't make it wrong to be white. But it does give you a responsibility to be aware of what you have, be grateful for what you have, and determine how you can use that privilege to help others. Maybe in a small way, maybe something greater.
"I don't want my child to look down on our history."
We stand on the shoulders of those who came before. We wouldn't be here if not for them. Were some of them racist by our standards? Yes, but not by the standards of their time. Every generation has tried to improve on the ones before. Everyone does the best they can with what they're given. Do we think the pioneers who took the Oregon Trail were dumb for not inventing the car and building highways? In the same way, heroes of the past who would be racist in the 21st century shouldn't be erased for their failings when their successes brought us here. Without them, we might not be able to reach the place where we can see what is wrong and set about changing it.
Edit: Thank you for the people who pointed out that people can have different "heroes." I think Rosa Parks and Malala are heroes. If you don't agree, then you should probably just ignore my comment.

I love that she said we’re teaching kids to use critical thinking and when they notice bs they call it out. I’ve been very impressed with a lot of young adults the last few years. Seeing how many teenagers spoke up after Parkland was amazing. In my own town we had teens set up an entire BLM march, working with our politicians and townspeople to organize it. Currently we are having serious issues with the lack of school bus drivers, over crowding on buses and the district putting middle and highschool kids on the same buses which just increased the problem. While parents sat and bitched on Facebook, it’s the teens who took action and began writing and reaching out to the superintendent for change. I am sure young adults will change our future and I will stand behind them and support it.

"White Fragility" is a book about why it is difficult for white people to talk about racism.
Scott Jennings singling it out, simply for the title, without a clue as to its subject is a perfect example of why it SHOULD BE in the curriculum.

I go to this school. When me and some friends read about the ban from a York Dispatch article, we were pretty confused on why the ban even took place. No one I knew could quite put together the logic that they kept bringing up. Apparently the books were “one sided,” but isn’t every book like that? I think it is essential to learn all the sides of a story to truly understand it. It is a pretty simply concept to understand. I am currently a freshman, and feel as if the school board could be doing so much better than they currently are. The students that are protesting the ban are truly inspiring and respectable.
