- Ticks carry lymes disease, which is a debilitating disease. Many parts of North America are loaded with ticks. I have learned how to prevent ticks from being in your yard. Here is how...
I have a 50 x 50 foot garden surrounded by chickens on two sides. The chickens are not allowed to enter the garden. But they are allowed to freely run around the outside edges.
Ticks can sense where you have last walked and things you have last touched. They wait there for you to pass by again. They are very patient. I find ticks on my water bucket, feed bin, hand tools and anything else I touch on a daily basis. When you pick up or handle these items again the tick grabs onto your hands and quickly starts to crawl up your arm. They wait in tall grasses for you to pass by and hitch a ride on your pant legs.
If you do not catch the ticks then they will slowly crawl around you looking for a nice, dark and safe place to bite. Usually at the hair line or under your clothes somewhere.
Chickens eat just about anything that moves which is small enough for them to gobble up. Since ticks are attracted to animals, they are drawn to the chickens. The ticks go for the chickens, which happily eat them up. Even if a tick manages to get on a chicken, another chicken would eat it quickly. Chickens hang out together in groups so the chances of a tick remaining unnoticed is very low. I highly doubt that a chicken would have a tick on it for long. Also chickens preen themselves and would eat a tick if seen.
This works out very nicely for me. Ticks are drawn to chickens. Chickens eat ticks.
My little garden space is a tick free zone. I have never had a tick in my garden. I can safely put my cat in the garden without fear of getting a tick.
The only problem with chickens in the woods is that predators want to eat my chickens.
So I have an electric fence around the chicken range to keep predators out. This has worked so far for two years. I have not lost a single bird inside the protected area when the fence was functioning properly.
I am expanding this range now to encircle my entire meadow. I will make a 2.5 acre tick free zone.

*TIPS:*
1) Technically ticks don't over winter in leaves, they live in the leaves mostly for the moisture, and "over winter" primarily with rodents. MY TICK CONTROL PROGRAM: The best way to fight ticks is to lower the overal population by interrupting the life cycle in the winter. I do this by giving out free samples of dryer lint in toilette paper tubes to the resident rodents in the area. But what they don't know is I sprayed the lint with Permethrin, and the rodents make their nests, and roll around in the stuff and among each other.
2) Ticks EXPLODE in population with the deer primarily. So another way I treat my farm is to put out deer feed/lick stations treated with Permethrin on the legs and on posts around them. I also made the stations multi level so that larger deer have to stretch their necks across a "sill" and thus treat all sides of their necks/heads. For smaller deer and deer without racks, they have are the only ones with access to the lower level and rolling pins with treated foam coat their necks/heads and even bodies.
3) I also recommend Diatomacous Earth blown from the field edges into the woods along with the leaves that collect there. *That is PRIME tick ambush country since many tick infested animals move along wood edges.* This creates a buffer zone and DE gets everywhere if applied heavy. *I buy 50lb bag once a year, and then blow it using a leaf blower held very low to the ground.*
The suggestions in this video work great. I just wanted to share my adventure in my "Great Patriotic Tick War" after I purchased my infested land. *I have not had a tick incident since implementing all 3 of my layered defense strategy.

In a cold winter environment like upstate NY...rodents are probably the number one avenue for tick survival. And due to the sexual and sleeping habits of rodents, they will spread the Permethrin all over each other and in their nests when the tick population is at it's lowest. Which is key to drastically reducing the overall population for the next season.
*TIP:* Rub your finger in peanut butter and VERY LIGHTLY rub the faintest amount on the tube right before throwing them near rock piles, fallen trees, wood edges etc etc... Rodents LOVE to travel along these places anyway, and with the faint smell of peanut butter....they are guaranteed to find your "Free Bedding" gift. *This can be done in conjunction with rodent control measures (poison, traps etc) if you wish to control their numbers as well. You'll never get rid of all rodents, and new arrivals to your area will simply steal the Permethrin lint bedding from their dead cousins. So feel free to go after both pest populations at the same time if you wish.*

The bad thing I've found about ticks is that after finding two or three on you, you check yourself thoroughly and find no more ticks, go take a shower, scrubbing down extra well, then after drying off and putting on clean clothes, for the next few hours you still feel the ticks crawling on you! Those are what I call "imaginary ticks", and they are almost as much of a nuisance as the real ones! (they just don't carry lymes disease)
Good job Troy - another "predator" the top wire will discourage is the "so called" humans. Anyone trying to sneak over or cut through the fence may get a good surprise!

I struggle with this every day. I literally feel like a mental illness from phantom ticks. That, or after biting you if "activates" a crawling sensation.
When I first homesteaded the 'old timers' told us to put a good ring of wood ashes around our trees , s the ticks drop down off the trees and can't climb back up through the ashes. We did that and also let chickens free range , day times. It immediately started helping with ticks and flys, which were a real issue the first year. We also used the ashes to create a dust for the chickens to dust in.

@@alcovli5580 Putting ashes out could still help. It dries out the insects a bit, like diatomaceous earth. If you have a natural wood fire regularly, it may be a cheaper alternative. It gets rid of snails too.

Opossums also seek and eat ticks!! Also opossums can not be effected by rabies or transmit rabies. I always thought they were nasty animals but they only want to clean up trash, including those nasty ticks. It’s all in perspective. Thanks for the video and thanks for sharing your knowledge!! You live in a wooded area. You will never ever be 100% tick free. Mowing and keeping the place clean will indeed help but not making it impossible to pick up a tick.
The Long Project , He never said that it was 100% effective, albeit the title is a little misleading in that respect however I think he did mention that they were all only preventative and not airtight solutions.

I have two chickens that are my roosters favorite and have lost all back feathers. The first one I put a chicken saddle on. After about 3 weeks she got it off. When I checked her I found a tiny black tick attached to back. This happened around the 1st week of April 2022.
We put sulphur rocks in the ground. Couple of inches down every couple of feet. Just push them into the ground with a broom stick. We never had another tick. That’s saying a lot in Texas.

Possums eat ticks, too. Guinea hens are good.
Your chickens are saying "Get back to work, we're hungry!" LOL. My chickens eat anything that move. They also scratch up leaves and dirt, regular tillers. No need to turn a compost pile if they have excess to one. Can't wait for the electric wire to be finished so your friends can visit you again. God Bless and take care.
Thanks for the informative video! Has anyone tried diatomaceous earth to kill the ticks? It's effective against many insects. We only use the food grade kind. I think my problem was also too many mice. They spead lyme. They have been reduced, and we have tired to cut our lawn, so hope that helps. Need to get some chickens!

Thanks for the info on the ticks, I'm now sure that I've seen ticks at my cottage in eastern Ontario. Scary thing is I don't know if I've been bit before. my grass is about 1" tall and some areas patchy with just dirt, still have ticks all over, i even have them crawling of the tiny rocks in my rock garden where i sit they just don't stop, i guess i will try the DE treatment, Nice video tho glad you are getting a handle on the ticks
The number one helper in spreading lime disease is rodents! Promoting snakes and habitat for them is a number one priority! Ticks rely on rodents the first part of their lives and making places for snakes to hide and live on your property is a good way of preventing the rodents from inhabiting your property! Setting rodent traps can help in reducing numbers as well! Snakes are loved in Appalachia!

Eveything you're saying about ticks seems accurate. You probably get a lot of suggestions when mostly people agree with you. I would also have cats to rid mice and a fire pit for leaves. Still danger from above from hawks. I wonder what solutions for that there might be. If there is facial recognition software, you would think there is hawk recognition of their sillouettes flying and thereby a solar powered electronic response like an alarm or something in motion to scare them away. If Tractor supply doesn't sell that along with electric fence, they should. Maybe the product hasn't been invented and marketed yet. Randy in MN

Twenty years chronic with Babesiosis (like Lyme but protozoic vs. bacterial), and all good information here. I'll add that quail are much better tick hunters than chickens or ducks.
You mentioned that squirrels and such carry ticks. They will of course not be stopped by the electric fence because there will be points where they can cross from tree to tree, and then get down to the ground.
Maybe not a bad idea, anyway, because after the initial feast your chickens will need a new source of ticks at least once in a while, as a treat!

We just moved upstate N.Y. and my 4 year old had a tick in her ear we got it out but now I'm going to be more vigilant.
Up there the ticks can be quite horrible. We now have Guinea fowl which eat ticks. We sold out chickens and keep only Guineas now. We only had 4 ticks this entire year compared to a few every day in previous years. Our entire front 2.5 acre lot is fenced in so they free range the entire property. They patrol the land all day like soldiers.
I take care of a storage facility and is getting nothing but gravel all over the place. That place is loaded with ticks. Absolutely loaded in southern Maine. I mean you can’t go on their people have problems with ticks in the storage unit. I mean it’s friggin they’re everywhere down there.
For the rest of us who actually want a lawn and the ability to have guests and BBQ's, etc, $20 for a quart of permathren and a pump sprayer will put a serious dent in the tick population. Also most everything else, however aside from fish and honey bees, and cats, it'll do the job.
What about the predators that come for the chickens?
found one crawling this year.. find one or 2 attached every year. bumps me out. i was really sick for 3 years..and dr said not Lyme. test negative but do not believe it was true. i love the woods and may try the pyrethrum. sp? hubby won't cut grass. too busy. i get them around the house.. and in the woods.. yes chickens eat ticks! i need chickens!
Do you have many issues with raptors and other predators feasting on your chickens?
I did but I put up fishing line and string over the chicken range and nothing ever came from the air again.

Birds are a huge transporter of ticks. I do enjoy feeding the birds in my yard so I’m looking for ways to kill any ticks that may drop off at my feeders.
My daughter and I have had our health decimated from indoor mold and tick bites- ticks in SW wisconsin as well as in upstate NY. I nearly died from bartonellosis several times between 2016-2018. I am still sick but thankfully nowhere near as badly as before. I have been in treatment since May 2016 after I had a tick on me for about 2 days in NY.
My physical stamina has been greatly reduced- I used to run trails 10-30 miles regularly until tick disease. Now I’m lucky if I can walk 2-4 miles at a time.
I live in town so I can’t have chickens. The DE comment below is interesting and I will be looking into that. I am open to other suggestions on how to enjoy the birds while controlling ticks in my yard.
My LLMD who is now retired told me he has a friend in Canada whose job is to count the ticks on migrating birds.. he said there were ALOT. Ugh.
Since you cant have chickens and love birds, the DE is awesome. I once found a dead raccoon in my storage tent. Ticks were everywhere. Hundreds of them. It was like a horror movie. I put DE heavily all over the animal and the area. A few days later no ticks.
Put DE under the feeders and around the area. It helps the birds and removes internal parasites while killing insects on the ground.

TL;DR - Have chickens
Try a little cedar oil mist, to make a tick run from you. Another way never hurts and it gives MOMT peace of mind if you can comvince him no ticks in the fenced in area.

Out in the property, I got ticks every day. Out roaming about.

I can do even better now. I am married now. 18 acres of land. 2.5 acres fenced in. Guinea fowl run free. The area they run in is tick free.

This was a 57 acre property. The "yard" was a lot smaller area in front of the house. I have no ticks to show you now. I cannot do that. The guinea fowl are the best. They roam the yard all day, covering the entire property multiple times a day, every day. They love ticks.

Hi! We just bought land that has been sprinkled with tick granules for years. I want to make a chicken tractor to keep the ticks down. Im just started looking into this so im not sure if the granules are toxic. In fact, your video is the first in my search. Do you know if the granules are toxic to the hens? Thank you!
I dont trust chemicals. It depends on how long the land has been sitting without new treatment. Chickens are pretty tough though in some ways. Sorry I cant say more without knowing what chemicals and when they were last used.

Trim around walk areas, keep grass and plants short as possible. Gravel is best for walkways. Use natural repellent spray where you travel most.

on the raccoons I think the electric fence as been successful because you don't have trees around the chicken yard but you do have trees along the outside fence so I don't think it's all the way racoon safe unless the trees are cut because the raccoons will drop from the trees, I've seen it with my own eyes.

String an electric fence 1/16 of an inch from the ground to keep the ticks out...Ha just kidding. You got to do what works for you.

Lime will reduce the acid level of your yard so check the PH first.

rich k I watched a video of a guy who had collected maybe 20 old fridges to use as raised beds. Seemed to be working great. I suppose if he got some flooding they would protect his plants.
Have you checked your chickens for ticks?
My dogs keep getting ticks and there is no vegetation just sand. Nothing I put on them seems to work!!
That is why I dont have outside cats or dogs. Frontline is the best to keep the dog safe but it will still pick up ticks and carry them around for a while. The dog is probably going into the vegetation somewhere to get the ticks.

@@blueskythinking8312 Please do not assume things before asking. I have since moved. We have Guinea fowl that eat ticks. Our dog has a 20ft wide by 100ft long run area and we take her on walks.

Get guinea fowl. I am now married with a child and living on a homestead in Michigan. Still making videos. We have about 30 free range chickens along with 6 guinea fowl. No more ticks this year. The birds eat anything that moves.
The fact is your yard isn’t ticks free zone - you just showed us a tick in your yard
The garden area was a tick free zone due to the chickens eating everything that moves out there and the ticks were attracted to the chickens.
