This item works for Chiggers. I think I am a Magnet to Chiggers and I have stayed awake several nights scratching Chiggers. I have tried so many different things to prevent chigger bits and stop the itch and nothing worked. I also consulted my Dermatologist and the things she recommended did not work. So, I went to Tractor Supply and bought a 32 oz. bottle that was on sale for $16.99 and mixed it 15 to 1 oz. of water and sprayed my shoes, socks, and around my pants legs before going out to cut the grass and it stopped the chiggers. Thank you for this video. I will definitely tell everyone I come in contact with about this chemical. Thank you for this video.
When i get chigger bites i take a lit cigarette and hold it close to the bump to heat it pretty hot , sometimes i get a little blister but it takes the itch right away, the blister is way better then the itch lol just have to find a smoker and bum 1
Put a bit of clear nail polish on the chigger bite where it burrowed into the skin This will cut off the air to the chigger and cause it to back out of you but they will get caught and die between the skin and polish When you peel the nail polish off you will find the chigger stuck where it died attempting to burrow out through the nail polish
I had babsiosis, a tick borne illness, which took 3 months to recover from so this would be great product to use. Ticks are the worst. Thanks for a great video.
Excellent video, thank you for showing the concentration amounts. I like the cost savings you demonstrate by using the concentrate - I bought Sawyers for the ease of use. My co-worker did get bit by tick and got the disease - he can’t eat meat anymore and is skinny as a rail and can’t keep warm due to the loss of body fat. Stay safe out there.
Awesome video! I’ve been using permethrin for many years now and have a tip that makes application so much easier. I spend a lot of time outdoors, going in to tick and chigger infested areas every day, so I treat virtually my entire wardrobe. I also have barn cats and don’t like to spray it outdoors (it’s only toxic to cats when in liquid form, according to what I’ve read). So to make things way easier on myself, I put a load of clothing into the washing machine, my socks pants shirts etc, fill it up with water, add an ounce or two of 10%, let the washing machine mix it up a bit, then allow the clothing to soak for half hour or so. Put it on the spin cycle then hang them out to dry. It works great, and that concentration seems to be more than effective. The only time I mix up spray it’s just a small quantity for my boots two or three times a year, or to treat the seats in my truck.
@EmM-963 Yeah, I totally understand where you are coming from and why that would be a concern; however from what I’ve read permethrin and pyrethroids have low water solubility and tend to bind with solids. This characteristic leads it to relatively quick molecular breakdown and prevents them from persisting in the environment. In the washing machine scenario, the chemical is also dramatically diluted to very low concentrations. As opposed to spraying the solution onto clothing in open air at the typically applied rate of 0.5% - 0.1%, we’re talking about dilution by orders of magnitude. One of the main reasons I switched to using this method was to avoid direct contact with insects while spraying in my flowery yard. I used to always hang the garments to be treated on my clothes line and then spray them. Every time I would do this, all the flying insects would invariably ignore my advice about steering clear, only to end up coming in to contact with the overspray, which bothered me, and bothered them a lot more.
I've been bowhunting for 35 years and usually don't hunt early season because of seed ticks, where have I been! Never heard of this stuff, should be a game changer this year.
Lice Spray is Permethrin, used it in Alaska for defence against the State Bird, Mosquitoes... My brother was standing in a Blueberry patch in Denali NP. He had a gray halo, Thousands of Mosquitoes trying unsuccessfully to attack. Just sprayed jean pants and a denim full sleeve shirt hanging 24 hours air drying. Reports are good for up to 6 wash cycles 😊
You knowing what a surfactant is indicates experience in ag chemistry. That’s good enough for me. Great job. PS I’m a fan of Sawyers. Been using it at my property for the past 4 years with success.
hey thank you for this video I was looking for something to use in my yard and after watching several reviews that miiiiiight work I know this sure will. Thank you and have a blessed day. Stay safe and follow the Lord, He loves you!
Have seen a LOT of Permethrin Vids,,most start out taking BS and about their aunt Edna's Knee problems. THEY young man is all Business and facts. Great job Catman.
I didn't know about Permethrin and cats, and as a cat owner and outdoor enthusiast I can't thank you enough for that bit of info. I've used the Sawyer brand for years and I've never had a tick bite (that I've found anyway). The first time I saw Sawyer the warning label scared the tar out of me so I actually called them. The petroleum smell is the chemical they use to aerosolize the active ingredient. It aids with spraying. It does evaporate along with it's smell, along with the danger of direct skin contact with the product. Permethrin is also the active ingredient in lice shampoo at about 1% concentrate. I didn't however know about the less expensive concentrates, I'll be switching to those so thanks again!
No. The spray nozzle aerosolizes the mix by pumping it through a small orifice and turning it into a mist of tiny droplets. That's called an aerosol. The petroleum component is the solvent. Permethrin is oil soluble, not water soluble. It is hydrophobic. That is why a little bit of surfactant (i.e. detergent) is used to make a pretty poor emulsion with the water and the concentrated permethrin. You shake the mixture. Spray it. Shake it more. Keep spraying. Once it dries and the petroleum/water mixture evaporates, the permethrin is impregnated on the clothing fibers (cotton absorbs the stuff great) and you have six weeks of protection. Use a gentle wash like Sport Wash, and don't put the clothing in the dryer. Air dry them. You'll have six weeks of tick protection on your clothing.

I don't know why companies don't say if the permethrin had petroleum chemicals. Last time I got some, it stunk up my yard though it did dissipate. I wasn't comfortable using it on my clothes. This video took the mystery out of it. Thanks!
Thanks for your rubber meets the road info. Great humble info on the scent control aspects. For the deer hunter, as you said, play the wind, and enter your stand location from the least expected deer route. Thank you sir.
Suspect the petroleum base adheres to your clothing better- the water based may require more frequent applications. Been using the Sawyers for years- sceptics, IT WORKS. Will be heading to TS bc u can’t beat the price point of the mix yourself. Thankyou for the video
You just saved me a ton of money, I went with the Gortons, $8 for 8oz (the 32 oz was $17 at ts) just to try out. Treated my tent. I believe it’s identical to sawyers when they dry and air out the smell dissipates. Well worth the peace of mind.
Was doing land survey work out in the woods in Georgia in the `70's and after I set up the instrument and was waiting on the guy up front to get in position I just happened to be looking at the ground and noticed ticks; looking around closely noticed I was completely surrounded and they were on every blade of grass and leaves and all headed my way because of chiggers I sprayed DEET on my pole climbing boots every morning to the point after a while they were saturated and noticed when those things got close they broke camp. Permethrin has been my 'go to' for just about everything for the last few yrs and works very well I even use it diluted in the house because here down South it is insect country big time.
I use the 36.5%, few important tips. A.) If you have cats, and they get into this wet, it WILL kill them at worst, or cause horrible nuerological deficits at best. Also applies to aquatic life when wet. B.) One way to save some time and get even better coverage, buy a cheap pump sprayer, lay your stuff on your lawn or in the driveway and hose it down. Takes 1/10th the time and if you use distilled or filtered water it will stay usable all season. It may stay good with normal tap water but pymethrin bonds with contaminants and minerals and for the 50 cents a gallon I don't risk it. If you wash and dry this stuff it should be resprayed every six cycles. You can stretch it a bit by air drying but I wouldn't go past eight for maximum effectiveness. Permithrin is removed via mechnaical action, so the agitation cycle in the washer and the tumbling in the dryer does the most damage. If you hand wash you probably got double the normal life if not more. I also use 1 percent concentration just for peace of mind. Happy hunting.
Mr. Finn can you tell me how you apply and your mix. I bought a product online and it said 36% permethrin. Some one left a review with a formula to mix half tablespoon to 16 oz water. I have used that before but I am curious to your formula thanks!
The 36.8% version, Permethrin SFR, is NOT safe for use on clothing even diluted to the 0.5% used for clothing like the 10% version. The 36.8% SFR has additional active ingredient chemicals in it that are harmful to humans and can be absorbed through the skin. The 10% version does not contain these chemicals.
Have been using Sawyer pre-mixed with no apparent odor problems. Will switch to Martin to save money. Did not know about the red meat thing, only the other. Great presentation. Thanks.
This is a great, pragmatic and unbiased head-to-head comparison. Well done! I just moved from CO (where ticks aren’t much of an issue) to WA (where they’re thick!) so I’ll definitely be putting this to use. Looking forward to killing some ticks!!
Another great video. Thank you. I used the water-based concentrate, diluted to .5%, on my turkey hunting clothes and had zero ticks bother me the entire season (hunted a lot). First time that has ever happened. We have the lone star/red meat problem in the immediate area so there is no way I'm going out with untreated clothes.
Been using the Martin water base. Bow hunting turkey. I set down my small pack, the one thing I didn't spray. Set out my decoy, 2 minutes, picked up the small pack and it had 8 ticks on it that I saw. I sat there for a few hours and none on me. Sprayed the pack when I got home. I also spray the decoy bag. Anything that they can get on so I don't drag em home or in my truck. Got the tip from you. Thanks
EXCELLENT VIDEO... THIS MAN DID HIS RESEARCH... EXCEPT, ''SOAK'' THE CLOTHING, GET A BUCKET AND SOAK THOSE ITEMS.. SOAK THEM.. THEN THROW THEM ON A FENCE LINE OR TREE LIMB AND LET THEM COMPLETELY DRY....SHIRT, PANTS, BASEBALL CAP, NECK SCARF AND SOCKS, AND SOAK THE SHOES... LET DRY FOR DAYS... NO TICK WILL GET NEAR YOU WITH THAT.
Thanks for a great video! I bought some of the Sawyers tick repellent from Amazon to spray on my mowing and shooting clothes and so far it’s working great! Don’t forget to get your shoes and socks.
Great video. Here in Arkansas the ticks are pretty bad this year and this video was extremely helpful. I'm off to buy some water based permethrin solution! Thanks a lot!
Well I’m giving you two thumbs up 👍 👍for putting this video out here for us to see. I’m looking for some right now. So I can go back outside. This summer.
I've looking at alot of videos and this is the best one thankyou boss my blue heeler got out of the house and when she came back about a week later she had alot of ticks on her ear so I need a good spray
I use the same mixture in a one gal sprayer . I soak the inside of my tent each season and let it air dry. Then i wet down the outside of my tent with water repellent and let it dry.
The odor you smell is the dispersant or Medium used to suspend the permethrin so it can be dispersed as evenly as possible preferably something with low adhesive force and high capillary action
Thank you. I, like others, have not been able to find any concentrate that does not also have "petroleum distillate" on the label. The label of the Martin's that's currently on Amazon also says "contains petroleum distillate".
Gr8 gr8 video my handsome brother thank you I'm trying to convince my partner that permethrin is safe for us to spray on our clothes she's now convinced from watching this video
I have used the sawyers for the last 2 years. Never been worried about any scent, from what I can tell after its dry there is little if any scent. I didnt know about the other ones though, I may look into that at TSC. I tried the spray can not the bottle this last week actually when I did a bit of scouting. You get a little more for a little less $$ and I felt it covered better than the spray bottle. As far as the videos go, keep doing what you do, we all enjoy them and thats the bottom line!
They all work great. Excellent video. In my experience, the Sawyer is completely odorless after it dries on clothing and I usually mix at 0.75% and really soak the clothes well. The petroleum based works great but it has a very strong petroleum odor and leaves an oily residue on the clothing. So I don't use that anymore. I also got some clothing from Insect Shield. Increased cost but they last much much longer. Last week I was wearing a pair of insect shield socks without any other bug protection. I had 3 ticks crawling on my gloves. In every case I picked them off and placed them on my sock. Dead within a minute.
Man, you got all the good tips about the product, I was thinking about how toxic this is to cats and then you mentioned it. I wanted to purchased this for my yard, but I have cats, so I have to use essential oils such as Cedarwood. Thanks for the video!
I’m seeing at least one a day on a random person in my house. 5 family members. 6 acres, 2 of it wooded. We keep everything cut and clean. No one is in the woods. My dogs get a chewable and heartworm meds from the vet. In a normal year I might seen two ticks all summer. It’s only May and I’m seventeen one a day?? Now I’m digging for info like this. I’ve lived here 45yr and never saw them this bad. Thank u for the info. I pulled a dog tick off my sleeve after walking from the house to the garden today. I walked under zero trees. Idk what the hell is going on
My horse and I got chiggers. I do buy the pimethrin concentrate at TS. I washed him in castille soap and put coconut oil on his face. It seemed to help. But I'm going to spray him with the pimethrin tomorrow and hope that kills them. TY.
I have been using the concentrate and mixing my own for several years. It works great and is inexpensive. I have never noticed deer reacting to the spray. I would much rather have a deer get downwind and smell the permethrin than to get any tick disease.
We buy the generic bulk containers at tack or horse stores and mix it in smaller spray bottles for treating our clothes. Save lots of money and never have ticks all season long.
I will definitely be getting this this season because last season it's been so warm in Northwest Indiana I actually got three tick bites and I thought I had Lyme disease luckily I did not.
Thanks for the video. I have used the Martin's. I would say it worked well, but I did get bit under two pairs of socks. The pair that contacted my skin was untreated, the top pair was treated along with my pants shoes and shirt.
I just bought a bottle of the permethrin and it has a warning on it that says avoid breathing vapors, skin irritation and dont get on clothes!!! but I see you have no problem with it. what gives!
😭😭😭😂😂😂strugglin ticks...best part of the video! Thanks for the advice. Im gonna save this and run with it...thanks again big guy! Very straight forward and to the point
Ticks do have to make contact with permethrin but it only requires a few molecules to work. Spraying until the surface appears damp is sufficient. Of course more is better. role up the bottom 6 " of pant legs and spray them as well. Spraying your footwear will reduce the incidence of tick bites by 73.6. Let the clothing dry before wearing. Permethrin will not work on our skin. Skin oils will neutralize it in 20 minutes.
My niece lives in Washington state. Her doctorate meteorologist husband used to work as a weather prediction meteorologist for the National Weather Service. He starting getting really sick ( this happened 3-4 years ago) and medical doctors in Seattle diagnosed him as having lyme disease. It was awful. It was like he could not think or reason anymore. The NWS finally had to let him go because he simply could not do his job anymore (he had been at the NWS for at least 10 years prior and a star at that). Today, he is like a different person...almost like someone with dementia. He is on full disability. He just turned 40. This disease is far, far more dangerous than ANY critter in the woods.
My cousin is a similar story. At 28, he started acting really odd. He's now in his mid-40s and has been an adult dependant since then. Just walks around in a fog. My aunt and uncle spent their retirement on trying to get him better to no avail. The doctors think it was from a tick bite he got in his late teens that went dormant but came back and affected his brain. It's really worse than death imo. People walking around worried about snakes, but they should be worried about these worthless bloodsuckers.
If "not sure" about any chemical internet search for its 'MRDS' on the internet. Any concoction sold in the US is required to have one and approved labeling before sale.
I rarely, if ever, comment on TH-cam videos. But this video is excellent and should be watched by anyone who goes outdoors.
There is a ton of videos on TH-cam about Permethrin but this is the best of them all hands down. Thanks for this mate.
Definitely

This is a great, pragmatic and unbiased head-to-head comparison. Well done! I just moved from CO (where ticks aren’t much of an issue) to WA (where they’re thick!) so I’ll definitely be putting this to use. Looking forward to killing some ticks!!
Very helpful video, Catman, thanks for taking the time to put it together! Wall to wall great info!
Soaking definitely works better and for more washes.
Thanks for a great video! I bought some of the Sawyers tick repellent from Amazon to spray on my mowing and shooting clothes and so far it’s working great! Don’t forget to get your shoes and socks.
Thank you for making this EXCELLENT video!
Good stuff. I use the Sawyer aerosol spray permethrin. No odor with it.
I use the same mixture in a one gal sprayer . I soak the inside of my tent each season and let it air dry. Then i wet down the outside of my tent with water repellent and let it dry.
Really good Vid. I have used this here in the South for years. No more chigger bites.
The odor you smell is the dispersant or Medium used to suspend the permethrin so it can be dispersed as evenly as possible preferably something with low adhesive force and high capillary action
Thanks Cat, used some on my hunting clothes this spring ,had only one tick all spring
Thank you for a very informative video. I didn’t know it was available in water based, will definitely try it.
Great bit of information there. The stuff works!
Best vid by far on treating your clothes. Good job.
Thank you for the video.
Can you please explain the difference between permethrin with petroleum and permethrin without petroleum?
Thanks
Man, you got all the good tips about the product, I was thinking about how toxic this is to cats and then you mentioned it. I wanted to purchased this for my yard, but I have cats, so I have to use essential oils such as Cedarwood. Thanks for the video!
Thank you for sharing this! I appreciate the knowledge.
Idk what the hell is going on
Maybe some guinea fowl or chickens might help bring the numbers down around the house as well
My horse and I got chiggers. I do buy the pimethrin concentrate at TS. I washed him in castille soap and put coconut oil on his face. It seemed to help. But I'm going to spray him with the pimethrin tomorrow and hope that kills them. TY.
Great video thanks allot we have those guys up here in Canada
I have been using the concentrate and mixing my own for several years. It works great and is inexpensive. I have never noticed deer reacting to the spray. I would much rather have a deer get downwind and smell the permethrin than to get any tick disease.
We buy the generic bulk containers at tack or horse stores and mix it in smaller spray bottles for treating our clothes. Save lots of money and never have ticks all season long.
I will definitely be getting this this season because last season it's been so warm in Northwest Indiana I actually got three tick bites and I thought I had Lyme disease luckily I did not.
got chiggars right here in Chicago. Thanks!!
Thanks for the video. I have used the Martin's. I would say it worked well, but I did get bit under two pairs of socks. The pair that contacted my skin was untreated, the top pair was treated along with my pants shoes and shirt.
Very helpful thank you. Good overview and comparison of brands as well. Enjoyed watching this.
Thanks for the information, I did not know about this product I'll give it a try.
Great video. Very informative. I really enjoyed it. Thanks for taking the taking to make it and post it.
I just bought a bottle of the permethrin and it has a warning on it that says avoid breathing vapors, skin irritation and dont get on clothes!!! but I see you have no problem with it. what gives!
ive used the sawyers for years and i love it.
Used this for years. I live in Mississippi and it will keep mosquitoes away also.
😭😭😭😂😂😂strugglin ticks...best part of the video! Thanks for the advice. Im gonna save this and run with it...thanks again big guy! Very straight forward and to the point
I've been using martins concentrate for about 14 years now, It works awesome!
Thanks Catman, going to try it while checking cameras this weekend.
Just used sawyers before I can across this video. It worked awesome no ticks at all!!!! But def want to try martins thanks man
Great information. A very good video. Thanks for sharing.
👍👍👏👏🇺🇲
Great job! Great clear voice
How often should you treat your cloths?
I was just about to buy some then learned it was toxic to cats. Thank you so much for that info.
Crap. Thanks for saying about cats. I was planning on to buy items for chigger n ticks. We planning to get more cats when we are going to buy land.
Well done. I have used Sawyer in the past but will change to Martin's in the future. Much better value.
Excellent, clear video with a lot of great info.
On the Sawyer Permethrin, the smell dissipates completely once the clothing it is applied to has dried.
Good presentation, very informative.
So the water base it is. Thanks
I can not find any permethrin concentrate without petroleum distillate in it.
Very clear and concise. Subbed even though I don't hunt!
It never crossed my mind to mix my own thanx for the heads up. 👍🏻
Good information,great video.
I use Sawyer's pre-mixed off the shelf. No issues with scent once it dries.
Thank you for putting this together. Nice job really helped me out.
Thanks bro. America 🇺🇸 forest 🌳 is the whole new different game to me.
Thanks for taking the time MAN
You are the best, thanks.
Great video. Good job! Thanks for the cat clarification.
If "not sure" about any chemical internet search for its 'MRDS' on the internet. Any concoction sold in the US is required to have one and approved labeling before sale.
Thank you for the info very informative I have lime from ticks and it is a real nasty thing so do a better job than I did to protect your self
