I love a pat of butter-(salted )or a piece of chewy cold bacon for my dessert now🥰 Sweets feel funny on my teeth and give me a belly ache. Craving gone.
This is exactly the discussion I needed this morning. I've been peeling back 35 years of addiction, transferred between multiple substances. I've driven it all down to one substance, and I'm ready to make the push to freedom. I have been confused about the dopamine dynamic between addiction and exercise. Exercise has been a part of my healing journey, but as I face the reality that I will not be able to avoid sitting with the discomfort (face the absurdity of life and embrace it anyway), I have been struggling with how to apply my exercise directly to my decision to step into freedom. I'm so close, I can taste it. I am going to watch this again, .. I will also go back through Dr Hubberman's lectures on dopamine / addiction / exercise. When I go for my workout today, it will be with a more focused purpose. In case you each have not been reminded lately, the work you do matters, and your sincere effort is improving the lives of others. ..honestly, saving lives .. ..peace and blessings to you and your families...
I became instant carnivore May 1 from SAD. No sugar since May 1. No desire for sugar or any carbs. 4 hours pickleball daily. Activity is key. Dopamine queen.
I started carnivore due to severe autoimmune disease. After 10 weeks, I've lost about 20 pounds. The best thing that has happened is that I am no longer dependent on pain relievers (aspirin, advil, etc.). I used to take a pill in the AM and then at night before I went to bed but don't need either now. I used to be very stiff but that has pretty much resolved as well. I must admit to a couple of failures. I still drink coffee with cream and use Stevia in it. I'm not that worried about it since weight loss wasn't my goal. I have a bad back and hip so am unable to do any type of exercise however I think what the exercise does for you is provide your brain with a distraction. I plan on using this information to do things like cleaning out closets and working on projects that require me to think instead of the physical workout-
Great episode. Thank you! Moving our bodies is so important. I do get regular exercise, but I notice that if I start to feel down for any reason, I don't want to move. That's when I tell myself to quit trying to figure things out in my head and just get up and do something physical, even if it's just taking out the garbage. Makes me feel better and motivates me to do something else, and get back on track.
EXACTLY!!!! SAME!!!! I made my husband his monthly favorite treat...his choice...Homemade Banana Bread. I mixed it all up & put in the oven & didn't think twice about it. I'm completely over sugar & have no cravings 😊
I have been following the Carnivore community since January and I am surprised at least weekly by the carnivore channels where the person has on a guest who talks about "falling off the wagon" or even does a video about how they themselves "fell off the wagon", and there is no mention of addiction. They talk about "eating too much cheese", or "eating too much butter", or "having too many snacks", but they don't talk about sugar addiction or carb addiction. Until every single one of them starts acknowledging the whole addiction side of the equation I think they are really doing a disservice to the community. Because it would be my guess that the majority of viewers are carb and/or sugar addicts and need help understanding that whole side of the equation. It's not about "cheating" or "being strong enough to not cheat". It's about an addiction stronger than any other except heroin and how to take that seriously.
If it takes ten years to regain all the dopamine that we lost eating junk. . .I find that comforting. I am 15 months carnivore, about 3 years keto before that. That tells me, I still have much to gain! I feel so much better than I once did. But how amazing that I keep gaining more and more. Skin looks even better, muscles get even bigger, waist gets Even thinner, and now I can also look forward to EVEN more dopamine at baseline. That's awesome😊

I watched this last night and thought of nothing else today. I am an addict. I’ve been keto since 2016 and did lose 145 lbs but of course fell off and regained 80 lbs in the first year after my husband’s traumatic death. Struggling so hard now with carnivore and have only lost 25# in 5 months but the sugar addiction is so real for me. This interview taught me so much and I hope this is what I need to correct a lifetime of being an addict (still kind of in shock at what I learned in this video).
Just a ton of valuable information. Thank you so much for this interview. I wrote three full pages of notes. I have such a hard time setting goals and accomplishing things. But now I have some great tools to apply. I really appreciated the list of molecules: anti-stress molecule, motivation molecule, productivity molecule! I’m 77 years old, take no medication, started carnivore 1 January after being keto for five years. I had gained weight and my sweetness addiction was getting the better of me. On carnivore, I have lost no weight-I’ve gained instead. But I love this way of eating. I just need to correct a few issues. The eat more butter thing has been confusing. Thank you for speaking to that. It does help to eat a couple pieces of frozen butter at night when I’m having cravings for sweets, however. There were so many excellent points made in this interview that I can apply. I’m certain now that I will see some progress! Thank you for the encouragement to choose what’s uncomfortable or painful. I must force myself to continue to be focused. TH-cam is an addiction for me, but on the bright side, I would not have seen this interview if I hadn’t been on TH-cam! Lol. Oh my goodness. Were you both in my head? You describe me to a t. Never knew much about dopamine. But I have all my life not been a fan of exercise. I’m 78, about 28 lbs overweight and have not lost weight after 17 mos carnivore. Bingo. This is convicting me to move, work harder, be ok with some pain. Thank you for opening my eyes, dear ladies.

Do you have fibromyalgia clients who can't sustain exercise for periods of time that you are talking about? How can we also reset our dopamine receptors when we have the problem that our mitochondria are so damaged and reduced that we do not produce enough energy for our internal normal operations, forget about cardio? Doing cardio like you are talking about would be very damaging to our energy deficits and pain levels. What hope do we have?
Thank you for your vids on Carnivore! I'm new to it and now about 15 weeks into it and have lost 65 pounds in under 4 months. I've had challenges (am old and retired and no exercise) having had a gastric by-pass about 15 years ago and not finding many videos of those challenges (ed, stones, fat absorption) which are only a few that I have experienced. As a 22 year post gastric bypass patient my dopamine has been messed up for decades. Exercise and Circadian therapy have been critical to balance my hormones. I love Dr. Zaldivar's approach and information on addiction. Great conversation!
Yes it helped me look at abstainers vs moderators in a different way. Use the terms when first starting but ultimately fix the root cause of food addiction with empowering your D2 receptors 💪🏼
When first starting out the journey to overcoming addiction,I think it's key to optimise your environment in order to maximise probability of succeding or you will probably fail. Get rid of all the junk and bring in the meat and eggs
I enjoyed the talk on dopamine. Usually people talk about dopamine in a negative way so this was refreshing. It's also interesting that dopamine can be reflected in social status and dominance. Very interesting way to think about dopamine.

Great interview and discussion. Thank you for the helpful information. Have you read Professor Tim Noakes' book Waterlogged? It makes a strong case that we don't need to be drinking gallons of water. Even endurance athletes don't need to guzzle water to avoid dehydration. Worth a read if you haven't already.
This was an incredible interview! I’m a therapist and this makes so much sense why a few of my clients who identify as having adhd, who exercise, have reported that they can stay off meds as long as they are doing high intensity working out. This was brilliant! Thank you. 🙏🏽

There is a subcategory with regards to addiction and exercise: those of us who have been addicted to exercise and have mostly overtrained our whole adult lives. Especially if you’ve eaten a lot of carbs…😵💫
This is such a timely episode. I’m a bachelor trained clinical nutritionist and know a lot about nutrition and food and I still had an eating disorder. I’ve only just come to terms with it and that I have an addiction problem, something my degree did not prepare me for. I have sugar AND alcohol addiction! It’s a vicious cycle. I am now back on the sugar free wagon after a year hiatus from having a BIG mess up last summer and starting a new job last October. I gained 20 pounds. I’ve lost 7 pounds in 2 weeks and getting back on track slowly but surely. I am TOTALLY a binger!

This Dopamine conversation is huge! Can you expand with a video about your thoughts on 5-htp, nac, sme, saffron, gaba, etc, some of us r struggling I know 5htp helps me but how or should we use these?
I agree with that Judy. I’m also the same way with trying small amounts of sweets as in ice cream or a couple bites of some dessert. First couple of bites are really good AND then it becomes too sweet and I easily stop because my body doesn’t want it anymore. This reminds me of my Latin American families and how they wouldn’t binge on sweets, could take a few bites and then that’s it. I remember seeing most plates left with half eaten slices of cake. At least those that grew up with their traditional diets which contained a lot of animal based soups, stews, roasts and seafood.
Not all obeese are unhealthy. In some circumstances it is an advantage. E.g. in very cold area or at food scarcity for some times. It depends on your personal fat threshold. I personally do ice swimming on winter and exercise a lot. I feel high dopamin rush during that. But I seldom see obese people that exercise regularily. Maybe only for short periods.
Just got done listening to a podcast episode on the Dutch urine test for CAR where they talked about how low cortisol is associated with low dopamine. Your guest today said the exact opposite that dopamine and cortisol move in opposite directions. I imagine their is truth to both with nuance. Could you explain?
Very interesting conversation. Looks like addiction is all about dopamine not a specific thing we are addicted to. So if we replace our dopamine levels we can essentially transcend our addiction.

I have one question a lot of people say if you have high cortisol to do more relaxing exercises like walk or yoga, but she is saying that dopamine and cortisol don’t reside together and you should do hard exercise which would raise dopamine and then Lower Cortisol.
Incredibly valuable information. I have left many addictions and know the pain of a dopamine I am now left with my original addiction: food. Since going carnivore a month ago, the dopamine drop still has me grumpy. I am such a food addict, that I didn’t want to listen to all the reasons to reset dopamine. Addiction would rather have me in denial, feeding the dopamine, than free and uncomfortable. Must continue to do hard things. Sigh…
Another excellent addition to your body of work. One thing I'm struggling with. I'm a total carnivore, but I still use butter and cheese to hit my fat macros. I feel good, my workouts are amazing, and I'm happy with my weight, but I keep hearing a lot of anti-butter and dairy discussions on your channel. If I'm not using butter and dairy to hit my fat macros, then how can I stay balanced on Carnivore?
What a phenomenal video! Thanks for sharing. I did carnivore for 30 days and saw exceptional benefits but went off the rails and binged on sugar, carbs. I have been fasting regularly to disattach from that and to ramp back into full carnivore. Love learning all things, and this really helped me to understand the role dopamine or lack there of plays in all this.
Loved this and gained some insight in my struggle with carnivore. Will soon be 4 months in, but weight loss has been at a snail's pace, and I have 100+ lbs to lose. Staying with it, but will tweak some things after watching this.

I am a 13 month recovering alcoholic addict and started carnivore 6 months back. I sometimes eat some black chockolate and have a bit of sugar in my coffee. I feel my body can handle that and don’t get cravings. Is this something I should change? My 30 year ongoing psoriasis cleared up nicely 😊
My husband & I from our first month of carnivore (6/26/23 start date) and were 99% pure. When I read all sugars spike insulin we never went the special stevia glyco____ way. I am more of a salt / good drink / wine / good cheese / meat snackerwise …..not so much sweet desserts or candies. Pork is not my chosen thing ever except for bacon. So I mostly did ribeye & hamburger & lectinlite chix or fresh fish like lobster or halibut or newer B fish (fish is preferred twice a week cause as a picky foodie i need variability ……(chix does not always agree with me satiation wise but I thinks it’s the crap (soy/corn/ hormones/antibiotics/ chemical fertilizer in its pasture or round up pesticide ……residue I cannot do bc it rare to want of order it UNTILL I went to Pasture DAN regenerative farming farm where he addressed NOT doing what every chix farmer does organic or not but diss not tell you). I am not a fan of pork rinds but the ones with Himilayan salt FOR 2 weeks …helped me get thru the 9-11pm snack time I used to indulge. I lost 18 lbs with no craving but a good drink and my daily beverage all month was one Swiss method decafe coffee which I dropped at months end bc KONA and the latter above coffee were always hard & horrible each morning so after a month I changed to orange ginger herbal tea-no sugar& no caffeine or carbs -warm in AM or future cold For second upcoming month but the first month was 1/3 VOSS water and 3 to 4 on number 1/3rds LIME bubley & 2/3rd of 28 Oz mixed with 1 teaspoon EVERLY (it’s best 28oz /1t and not 16oz / 2t. No wkouts as wanted 1st month to give me energy to start to exercise at 65yo and on target. I took a half Oreo chs cake with half scoop of ice cream celebratory instant plan at 31st anniversary 18 lbs of satisfactory losing from 255 to 237. Those bites were to reward my husband who lost 5 more lbs than I. I was not satisfied with those celebratory bites personally and did not set off cravings but I knew it would plateau me for maybe a week (been 3 days) AND EACH WEEK OF THE FIRST MONTH you need to know I plateaued each week for about 4 days doing 99% carnivore w/o wking out which I think second month will help as I start even walking or ….????? to my day or at least 3 X a week. So how can I judge my dopamine builders or fooling me yo just want to stay the course to get another 18-25 off as from 255 and I am at 237….my goal is 210….27 more pounds to go. I found that the celebratory bites would be rewarding but they were not. I did not like my consequence causing another 3 to ???5/7??? day plateau but did decide that I really need to work our every other day this second month as this plateau breaks. Please advise me on any improvement I could do besides starting to work out in week 6 for sure X 3 a week to start and maybe at month x3 increase if possible. I only eat from 2/3pm 2 strips of bacon coffee / and dine with dinner by 5-8pm and half the time had zero snacks after but other time had half a small bag of Himalayan salted pork rinds.. Here’s my daily intake to know for sure where my weak link is: Daily 2 strips of uncured no sugar bacon 2-hard boiled dinner of meat, fresh fish or chix with melted provolone or butter or mozerrella over the top. Snack after dinner was half time nothing or ate mostly half bag the Himalayan salted pork rinds. Twice only I ate the whole bag in first week and since not but had added a slice of camoozola (Brie blue). Last half no chips & no cheese. Felt strong and not happy with the 5 min celebratory dessert bites that I promised i would not allow to do unless I get 205lbs. So wanted you to know we were planned fasting eating from 2pm to 8pm most days but I did eat snack at 9-11pm which I have eliminated the last week of first month. Now ineed help with you take on my first month and break plateau 4 days each week. Thank You‼️💖✨💖✨💖‼️💖
As far as the lady not getting pregnant, I'd go back to Dr Bickman and the entire insulin resistance issue. Insulinemia causing reproductive issues. Carnivore fixing the insulin and hormone issues.
Very interesting that it takes 2 years to heal the brain from addiction. I learned many years ago from the Hare Krishnas that they don't allow someone to become a certain kind of guru or teacher until they've been off ALL drugs, including caffeine, for two years. I remember thinking that was pretty extreme, but they knew what they were talking about.
It’s too bad no one seems to know how bad long distance running is for people. It’s not healthy. If you want to run, sprint! There was no early human running 10 miles nonstop - that is not an evolutionary activity. Walking long distances, yes. But not long distance running - just running quickly and briefly from danger.
I’ve been eating mostly carnivore for the last 5 months. I cheat a little, but not too much. I have really enjoyed the gut benefits of this way of eating this way. However, I’ve had one big problem with this diet that’s making me rethink eating this way. It has caused my RLS symptoms to worsen. It was never this bad before. Every night ,several times a night; I’m up and down all night long. I’m not sure what to do. ☹️
What she says about even just one fat cell being inflammatory. I do not believe this is an entirely accurate statement and might be misleading. Perhaps she is talking about specific types of fat cells? Our bodies do need some fat cells. They serve a function to store energy, ok with some of that became out of control and became inflammatory....but in itself, something that originally was designed to serve a vital function to the survival of our species is not going to be something that also messes with our hormones. I think people need to fact check that statement. Also fat around organs protects them too. They also help with transfer of materials.i think, too, like fat solubles.... Let's just be careful here.

I feel like y'all are missing some understanding here on what food freedom is and all the other reasons why people might want to be strict. I lost my body dysmorphia in my early 40s doing the GAPS diet. At no point since then (53 1/2 now) have I binged or had anything other than food freedom. But food is still important socially, culturally, and within families and other relationships. I desire for better for my culture which I am actively watching crash and burn. I desire better for my family. I desire better for myself without that meaning I have to be the total outsider regardless of whether I'm moderating or abstaining. I behave as an abstainer in many ways and in regard to lots of possible choices, by choice, because, for example, if I eat gluten I will be sick. It's nothing like it was when I went gluten free at age 38 but it is still not good health. I've had a ton of healing since then. I have food freedom. I can eat anything I want. And to be honest none to very little of the problems I've had have been from avoiding pain or discomfort. I used to have an incredibly high pain tolerance. It's different now, I assume from the fibromyalgia. But I sure wish there were better communities available that just get it, that just want better, that just choose what's good for people rather than crappy toxic stuff like aspartame. Artificial sweeteners sure cause a wild ride for some of us fibro people with flared up symptoms! I realize not everyone has had health problems since birth as I have had. But I don't think I'm going to stop wishing that some communities were for me and that more communities were just better for society at large than the necessary default to why it's ok to eat whatever you want and why it's supposedly good to eat whatever you want and the more common reasons why people seem to struggle. I know it's true that some people did this to themselves. But I'm not sure it's as large a percentage as it seems from the way it almost always gets discussed. Nevertheless, learning more about dopamine was very interesting. Thank-you for that!
Why do eating disorder coaches and dieticians say that you only crave and overeat sugar because you restrict it either mentally or physically. They say that if you.are emotionally eating it then you need to work on fixing that but sugar itself is.not addictive.
Tip for cold showers: Take a couple of 1 gallon (5 litre) water containers from the supermarket, fill with water and place them in the crisper in the bottom of your refrigerator. Then an hour or two before you shower place them in the freezer drawer to chill. Take another cap and split with sharp blade or Stanley knife through middle to make a cross shape to allow watering can attachment be inserted. Once ready, bring containers to the shower room and after your "cold" shower take container with attachment inserted and cool down further. Once used up switch to second container if needed.
It seems to me that the way dr Sarah think about fat is different with Judy has been advocated all the time , she is not suggesting we eat more fat in our diet for hormones etc I am confusing
You’re right. She doesn’t. We are in different places of the carnivore community. As an example, Sarah is looking towards body optimization and healing food addiction. I recommend healing first and many women undereat fat. Don’t eat fat and gain large amounts of weight. That is inflammatory but find ways to eat fat and heal. I eat 75% fat and am relatively thin. I don’t limit my protein. Fat is critical for so many things but adding fat and not gaining weight is a fine balance we work careful with our clients. Eating 80% fat and limited protein is a mistake for longevity.

I get very philosophical about this rediscovery of the species correct diet and movement and how this rediscovery can also apply outward to how we should be living. Shall we heed Dr Jack Kruse and his call to correct our environments as well? NNEMF, air conditioning, keeping out of sunlight, our whole notion of what a house is, artificial light at night (ALAN), our feet bare to the ground and so forth. I wonder with all this optimization, what is the end result and how does it look. Lifespans of 140? Population explosions and rapid advancement because of lengthened and accelerated careers and knowledge building (rapid rediscovery of lost knowledge) does one part of humanity split off as the wheat and the other part - refusing to hear and heed become the tares? A whole reordering of the food supply chain, method and teaching of healthcare and medicine, and more? Do we stop driving to move more and shrink our city and town sizes? What about aviation and radiation at altitude? Many avenues to reconsider...
There's no reason to worry about population explosions. We've seen time and time again that as soon as girls are given educations equal to the boys in a society, and are no longer handed off as child-brides, they very naturally choose to have less children. No woman wants to have gaggles of children (unless she's been deeply indoctrinated), so as soon as girls and women start getting the bodily autonomy that is their right, birth rates go way down to approximately replacement level.
i disagree, with only judging addition on emotional reaction. That is not my current experience. I experience a resurgence of brain wiring coming back alive if I eat just a little carbs a little often. It only happens when I’m outside of my usual environment and therefore behaviours. I’m always relieved to be back in my environment where I don’t challenge myself in those ways. I don’t need the sugar, or the carbs, but if I visit someone, and I have a little sauce on the only meat dish on the table, I can feel the ‘sugared brain’ coming alive. I’m aware of it, so I stop it with my will. But I don’t feel sad about it. I feel nothing about it. It’s just a brain fact.
I wish experts would address lipedema. It is a different type of fat, it is more like fibrous fat nodules. If you look up anorexia lipedema you will see that lipedema doesn't go away. I am desparate for a doctor who will help me with this.
I've seen some carnivore videos where they talked about lipedema. I think Kelly Hogan interviewed a lady with lipedema who was able to lose a lot of her leg swelling on carnivore. 🤔 I can't remember who else I've seen talking about it, but I know I've seen at least three carnivore videos that spoke to it, and I wasn't even looking for that topic (that's how I learned what lipedema even is). Give it a really thorough search, I think you'll find something.
Maybe the reason why we crave carbs when we're hungover is because we're looking to spike our glucose to get back to baseline; from one addiction to another.
Get so confused with other influencers saying exercise and cold showers is a stress to the body that ages you faster! Walking apparently is best exercise!?
I have low d2 receptors genetically. Will exercise counter this and increase the d2 receptor density? I have chronic pain from a degenerative joint disease. Which causes pain and discomfort practically 24hrs/day whether I am awake or asleep. Can’t say all this daily hard stuff increased my dopamine levels and protected me from sugar addiction 🤔. Perhaps what this guest speaks of does not apply to chronic pain🤔
Judy, I'm confused by your podcast with Dr. Sarah Zaldivar. You have a great podcast and many wonderful, informed and highly regarded guests but... You made points about nuance and not being so narrow minded in encouraging a one way approach but you also both in the same sentence at times say it's important to be vigilant and to avoid certain foods like sugar and fake sweeteners, eating keto "treats" or peanut butter cups and Häagen-Dazs ice cream, etc. You say 6 years has gotten you to a place that now you eat these treats and sugar and gluten - and you feed this to your kid(s)! I understand too that's there's a business and business model involved in what you say and teach but food addiction and even a small amount (a simple taste an one's tongue) can set a person back down to where they once were. I'm disappointed. I haven't checked if you've had her as a guest, but please have a lengthy discussion with Dr. Joan Ifland about addiction because I believe you need to either understand, as you like to say, the nuances of addiction and the absolutely important reasons why no human should eat peanut butter cups or Häagen-Dazs ice cream. "The more muscle you gonna have the longer you gonna live” yah sure.. in reality we see how young bodybuilders dropping dead like a flies one after another. Exercising for longevity it’s not about building a muscle mass, actually quite opposite. Staying lean, having a great range of motion and avoiding long cardio sessions this is longevity. Plus you don’t need to go to the gym for that

This is exactly the discussion I needed this morning. I've been peeling back 35 years of addiction, transferred between multiple substances. I've driven it all down to one substance, and I'm ready to make the push to freedom. I have been confused about the dopamine dynamic between addiction and exercise. Exercise has been a part of my healing journey, but as I face the reality that I will not be able to avoid sitting with the discomfort (face the absurdity of life and embrace it anyway), I have been struggling with how to apply my exercise directly to my decision to step into freedom. I'm so close, I can taste it. I am going to watch this again, .. I will also go back through Dr Hubberman's lectures on dopamine / addiction / exercise. When I go for my workout today, it will be with a more focused purpose. In case you each have not been reminded lately, the work you do matters, and your sincere effort is improving the lives of others. ..honestly, saving lives .. ..peace and blessings to you and your families...
I became instant carnivore May 1 from SAD. No sugar since May 1. No desire for sugar or any carbs. 4 hours pickleball daily. Activity is key. Dopamine queen.

I started carnivore due to severe autoimmune disease. After 10 weeks, I've lost about 20 pounds. The best thing that has happened is that I am no longer dependent on pain relievers (aspirin, advil, etc.). I used to take a pill in the AM and then at night before I went to bed but don't need either now. I used to be very stiff but that has pretty much resolved as well. I must admit to a couple of failures. I still drink coffee with cream and use Stevia in it. I'm not that worried about it since weight loss wasn't my goal. I have a bad back and hip so am unable to do any type of exercise however I think what the exercise does for you is provide your brain with a distraction. I plan on using this information to do things like cleaning out closets and working on projects that require me to think instead of the physical workout-
Great episode. Thank you! Moving our bodies is so important. I do get regular exercise, but I notice that if I start to feel down for any reason, I don't want to move. That's when I tell myself to quit trying to figure things out in my head and just get up and do something physical, even if it's just taking out the garbage. Makes me feel better and motivates me to do something else, and get back on track.

I have been following the Carnivore community since January and I am surprised at least weekly by the carnivore channels where the person has on a guest who talks about "falling off the wagon" or even does a video about how they themselves "fell off the wagon", and there is no mention of addiction. They talk about "eating too much cheese", or "eating too much butter", or "having too many snacks", but they don't talk about sugar addiction or carb addiction. Until every single one of them starts acknowledging the whole addiction side of the equation I think they are really doing a disservice to the community. Because it would be my guess that the majority of viewers are carb and/or sugar addicts and need help understanding that whole side of the equation. It's not about "cheating" or "being strong enough to not cheat". It's about an addiction stronger than any other except heroin and how to take that seriously.

If it takes ten years to regain all the dopamine that we lost eating junk. . .I find that comforting. I am 15 months carnivore, about 3 years keto before that. That tells me, I still have much to gain! I feel so much better than I once did. But how amazing that I keep gaining more and more. Skin looks even better, muscles get even bigger, waist gets Even thinner, and now I can also look forward to EVEN more dopamine at baseline. That's awesome😊

I watched this last night and thought of nothing else today. I am an addict. I’ve been keto since 2016 and did lose 145 lbs but of course fell off and regained 80 lbs in the first year after my husband’s traumatic death. Struggling so hard now with carnivore and have only lost 25# in 5 months but the sugar addiction is so real for me. This interview taught me so much and I hope this is what I need to correct a lifetime of being an addict (still kind of in shock at what I learned in this video).

I’m 77 years old, take no medication, started carnivore 1 January after being keto for five years. I had gained weight and my sweetness addiction was getting the better of me. On carnivore, I have lost no weight-I’ve gained instead. But I love this way of eating. I just need to correct a few issues. The eat more butter thing has been confusing. Thank you for speaking to that. It does help to eat a couple pieces of frozen butter at night when I’m having cravings for sweets, however.
There were so many excellent points made in this interview that I can apply. I’m certain now that I will see some progress! Thank you for the encouragement to choose what’s uncomfortable or painful. Oh my goodness. Were you both in my head? You describe me to a t. Never knew much about dopamine. But I have all my life not been a fan of exercise. How can we also reset our dopamine receptors when we have the problem that our mitochondria are so damaged and reduced that we do not produce enough energy for our internal normal operations, forget about cardio? Doing cardio like you are talking about would be very damaging to our energy deficits and pain levels. What hope do we have?

When first starting out the journey to overcoming addiction,I think it's key to optimise your environment in order to maximise probability of succeding or you will probably fail. Get rid of all the junk and bring in the meat and eggs
I enjoyed the talk on dopamine. Usually people talk about dopamine in a negative way so this was refreshing. It's also interesting that dopamine can be reflected in social status and dominance. Very interesting way to think about dopamine.

Even endurance athletes don't need to guzzle water to avoid dehydration. Worth a read if you haven't already.

I have sugar AND alcohol addiction! It’s a vicious cycle. I am now back on the sugar free wagon after a year hiatus from having a BIG mess up last summer and starting a new job last October. I gained 20 pounds. I’ve lost 7 pounds in 2 weeks and getting back on track slowly but surely. I am TOTALLY a binger!

This Dopamine conversation is huge! Can you expand with a video about your thoughts on 5-htp, nac, sme, saffron, gaba, etc, some of us r struggling I know 5htp helps me but how or should we use these?
I agree with that Judy. I’m also the same way with trying small amounts of sweets as in ice cream or a couple bites of some dessert. First couple of bites are really good AND then it becomes too sweet and I easily stop because my body doesn’t want it anymore. This reminds me of my Latin American families and how they wouldn’t binge on sweets, could take a few bites and then that’s it. I remember seeing most plates left with half eaten slices of cake. At least those that grew up with their traditional diets which contained a lot of animal based soups, stews, roasts and seafood.
Not all obeese are unhealthy. In some circumstances it is an advantage. E.g. in very cold area or at food scarcity for some times. It depends on your personal fat threshold. I personally do ice swimming on winter and exercise a lot. I feel high dopamin rush during that. But I seldom see obese people that exercise regularily. Maybe only for short periods.
Just got done listening to a podcast episode on the Dutch urine test for CAR where they talked about how low cortisol is associated with low dopamine. Your guest today said the exact opposite that dopamine and cortisol move in opposite directions. I imagine their is truth to both with nuance. Could you explain?
Very interesting conversation. Looks like addiction is all about dopamine not a specific thing we are addicted to. So if we replace our dopamine levels we can essentially transcend our addiction.

I have one question a lot of people say if you have high cortisol to do more relaxing exercises like walk or yoga, but she is saying that dopamine and cortisol don’t reside together and you should do hard exercise which would raise dopamine and then Lower Cortisol.

Another excellent addition to your body of work. One thing I'm struggling with. I'm a total carnivore, but I still use butter and cheese to hit my fat macros. I feel good, my workouts are amazing, and I'm happy with my weight, but I keep hearing a lot of anti-butter and dairy discussions on your channel. What a phenomenal video! Thanks for sharing. I did carnivore for 30 days and saw exceptional benefits but went off the rails and binged on sugar, carbs. I have been fasting regularly to disattach from that and to ramp back into full carnivore. Love learning all things, and this really helped me to understand the role dopamine or lack there of plays in all this.

My husband & I from our first month of carnivore (6/26/23 start date) and were 99% pure. When I read all sugars spike insulin we never went the special stevia glyco____
way. I am more of a salt / good drink / wine / good cheese / meat snackerwise …..not so much sweet desserts or candies. Pork is not my chosen thing ever except for bacon. So I mostly did ribeye & hamburger & lectinlite chix or fresh fish like lobster or halibut or newer B
fish (fish is preferred twice a week cause as a picky foodie i need variability ……(chix does not always agree with me satiation wise but I thinks it’s the crap (soy/corn/ hormones/antibiotics/ chemical fertilizer in its pasture or round up pesticide ……residue I cannot do bc it rare to want of order it UNTILL I went to Pasture DAN regenerative farming farm where he addressed NOT doing what every chix farmer does organic or not but diss not tell you). I am not a fan of pork rinds but the ones with Himilayan salt FOR 2 weeks …helped me get thru the 9-11pm snack time I used to indulge. I lost 18 lbs with no craving but a good drink and my daily beverage all month was one Swiss method decafe coffee which I dropped at months end bc KONA and the latter above coffee were always hard & horrible each morning so after a month I changed to orange ginger herbal tea-no sugar& no caffeine or carbs -warm in AM or future cold
For second upcoming month but the first month was 1/3 VOSS water and 3 to 4 on number 1/3rds LIME bubley & 2/3rd of 28 Oz mixed with 1 teaspoon EVERLY (it’s best 28oz /1t and not 16oz / 2t.
No wkouts as wanted 1st month to give me energy to start to exercise at 65yo and on target. I took a half Oreo chs cake with half scoop of ice cream celebratory instant plan at 31st anniversary 18 lbs of satisfactory losing from 255 to 237. Those bites were to reward my husband who lost 5 more lbs than I. I was not satisfied with those celebratory bites personally and did not set off cravings but I knew it would plateau me for maybe a week (been 3 days) AND EACH WEEK OF THE FIRST MONTH you need to know I plateaued each week for about 4 days doing 99% carnivore w/o wking out which I think second month will help as I start even walking or ….????? to my day or at least 3 X a week. So how can I judge my dopamine builders or fooling me yo just want to stay the course to get another 18-25 off as from 255 and I am at 237….my goal is 210….27 more pounds to go. I found that the celebratory bites would be rewarding but they were not. I did not like my consequence causing another 3 to ???5/7??? day plateau but did decide that I really need to work our every other day this second month as this plateau breaks. Please advise me on any improvement I could do besides starting to work out in week 6 for sure X 3 a week to start and maybe at month x3 increase if possible.
I only eat from 2/3pm
2 strips of bacon coffee / and dine with dinner by 5-8pm and half the time had zero snacks after but other time had half a small bag of Himalayan salted pork rinds..
Here’s my daily intake to know for sure where my
weak link is:
Daily 2 strips of uncured no sugar bacon
2-hard boiled
dinner of meat, fresh fish or chix with melted provolone or butter or mozerrella over the top.
Snack after dinner was half time nothing
or ate mostly half bag the Himalayan salted pork rinds. Twice only I ate the whole bag in first week and since not but had added a slice of camoozola (Brie blue). Last half no chips & no cheese.
Felt strong and not happy with the 5 min celebratory dessert bites that I promised i would not allow to do unless I get 205lbs. So wanted you to know we were planned fasting eating from 2pm to 8pm most days but I did eat snack at 9-11pm which I have eliminated the last week of first month. Now ineed help with you take on my first month and break plateau 4 days each week. Thank You‼️💖✨💖✨💖‼️💖

Very interesting that it takes 2 years to heal the brain from addiction. I learned many years ago from the Hare Krishnas that they don't allow someone to become a certain kind of guru or teacher until they've been off ALL drugs, including caffeine, for two years. I remember thinking that was pretty extreme, but they knew what they were talking about.
It’s too bad no one seems to know how bad long distance running is for people. It’s not healthy. If you want to run, sprint! There was no early human running 10 miles nonstop - that is not an evolutionary activity. Walking long distances, yes. But not long distance running - just running quickly and briefly from danger.
I’ve been eating mostly carnivore for the last 5 months. I cheat a little, but not too much. I have really enjoyed the gut benefits of this way of eating this way. However, I’ve had one big problem with this diet that’s making me rethink eating this way. It has caused my RLS symptoms to worsen. It was never this bad before. Every night ,several times a night; I’m up and down all night long. I’m not sure what to do. ☹️

Hi Judy. I'm 66 years old and am wondering if being a full carnivore removes the necessity of getting an anti-shingles vaccine.
What she says about even just one fat cell being inflammatory. I do not believe this is an entirely accurate statement and might be misleading. Perhaps she is talking about specific types of fat cells? Our bodies do need some fat cells. They serve a function to store energy, ok with some of that became out of control and became inflammatory....but in itself, something that originally was designed to serve a vital function to the survival of our species is not going to be something that also messes with our hormones. I think people need to fact check that statement. Also fat around organs protects them too. They also help with transfer of materials.i think, too, like fat solubles.... Let's just be careful here.

I feel like y'all are missing some understanding here on what food freedom is and all the other reasons why people might want to be strict. I lost my body dysmorphia in my early 40s doing the GAPS diet. At no point since then (53 1/2 now) have I binged or had anything other than food freedom. But food is still important socially, culturally, and within families and other relationships. I desire for better for my culture which I am actively watching crash and burn. I desire better for my family. I desire better for myself without that meaning I have to be the total outsider regardless of whether I'm moderating or abstaining. I behave as an abstainer in many ways and in regard to lots of possible choices, by choice, because, for example, if I eat gluten I will be sick. It's nothing like it was when I went gluten free at age 38 but it is still not good health. I've had a ton of healing since then. I have food freedom. I can eat anything I want.
And to be honest none to very little of the problems I've had have been from avoiding pain or discomfort. I used to have an incredibly high pain tolerance. It's different now, I assume from the fibromyalgia. But I sure wish there were better communities available that just get it, that just want better, that just choose what's good for people rather than crappy toxic stuff like aspartame. Artificial sweeteners sure cause a wild ride for some of us fibro people with flared up symptoms! I realize not everyone has had health problems since birth as I have had. But I don't think I'm going to stop wishing that some communities were for me and that more communities were just better for society at large than the necessary default to why it's ok to eat whatever you want and why it's supposedly good to eat whatever you want and the more common reasons why people seem to struggle. I know it's true that some people did this to themselves. But I'm not sure it's as large a percentage as it seems from the way it almost always gets discussed.

Why do eating disorder coaches and dieticians say that you only crave and overeat sugar because you restrict it either mentally or physically. They say that if you.are emotionally eating it then you need to work on fixing that but sugar itself is.not addictive.
Chocolate is so hard for me to abstain from. I have one or two squares of dark chocolate a day. I definitely feel addicted.
Tip for cold showers: Take a couple of 1 gallon (5 litre) water containers from the supermarket, fill with water and place them in the crisper in the bottom of your refrigerator. Then an hour or two before you shower place them in the freezer drawer to chill. Take another cap and split with sharp blade or Stanley knife through middle to make a cross shape to allow watering can attachment be inserted. Once ready, bring containers to the shower room and after your "cold" shower take container with attachment inserted and cool down further. Once used up switch to second container if needed.

You’re right. She doesn’t. We are in different places of the carnivore community. As an example, Sarah is looking towards body optimization and healing food addiction.
I recommend healing first and many women undereat fat. Don’t eat fat and gain large amounts of weight. That is inflammatory but find ways to eat fat and heal. I eat 75% fat and am relatively thin. I don’t limit my protein. Fat is critical for so many things but adding fat and not gaining weight is a fine balance we work careful with our clients. Eating 80% fat and limited protein is a mistake for longevity.

Are prebiotics (fermented foods) and probiotics necessary on carnivore?
I get very philosophical about this rediscovery of the species correct diet and movement and how this rediscovery can also apply outward to how we should be living. Shall we heed Dr Jack Kruse and his call to correct our environments as well? NNEMF, air conditioning, keeping out of sunlight, our whole notion of what a house is, artificial light at night (ALAN), our feet bare to the ground and so forth. I wonder with all this optimization, what is the end result and how does it look. Lifespans of 140? Population explosions and rapid advancement because of lengthened and accelerated careers and knowledge building (rapid rediscovery of lost knowledge) does one part of humanity split off as the wheat and the other part - refusing to hear and heed become the tares? A whole reordering of the food supply chain, method and teaching of healthcare and medicine, and more? Do we stop driving to move more and shrink our city and town sizes? What about aviation and radiation at altitude? Many avenues to reconsider...
There's no reason to worry about population explosions. We've seen time and time again that as soon as girls are given educations equal to the boys in a society, and are no longer handed off as child-brides, they very naturally choose to have less children. No woman wants to have gaggles of children (unless she's been deeply indoctrinated), so as soon as girls and women start getting the bodily autonomy that is their right, birth rates go way down to approximately replacement level.
i disagree, with only judging addition on emotional reaction. That is not my current experience. I experience a resurgence of brain wiring coming back alive if I eat just a little carbs a little often. It only happens when I’m outside of my usual environment and therefore behaviours. I’m always relieved to be back in my environment where I don’t challenge myself in those ways. I don’t need the sugar, or the carbs, but if I visit someone, and I have a little sauce on the only meat dish on the table, I can feel the ‘sugared brain’ coming alive. I’m aware of it, so I stop it with my will. But I don’t feel sad about it. I feel nothing about it. It’s just a brain fact.

I wish experts would address lipedema. It is a different type of fat, it is more like fibrous fat nodules. If you look up anorexia lipedema you will see that lipedema doesn't go away. I am desparate for a doctor who will help me with this.
I've seen some carnivore videos where they talked about lipedema. I think Kelly Hogan interviewed a lady with lipedema who was able to lose a lot of her leg swelling on carnivore. 🤔 I can't remember who else I've seen talking about it, but I know I've seen at least three carnivore videos that spoke to it, and I wasn't even looking for that topic (that's how I learned what lipedema even is). Give it a really thorough search, I think you'll find something.
Maybe the reason why we crave carbs when we're hungover is because we're looking to spike our glucose to get back to baseline; from one addiction to another.

Get so confused with other influencers saying exercise and cold showers is a stress to the body that ages you faster! Walking apparently is best exercise!?
Think about it. Of course anything stressful would age you.
It's best for you to figure out what works for you, and that means you have to do the experimentation yourself.

I have low d2 receptors genetically. Will exercise counter this and increase the d2 receptor density?
I have chronic pain from a degenerative joint disease. Which causes pain and discomfort practically 24hrs/day whether I am awake or asleep. Can’t say all this daily hard stuff increased my dopamine levels and protected me from sugar addiction 🤔. Perhaps what this guest speaks of does not apply to chronic pain🤔

I'm confused by your podcast with Dr. Sarah Zaldivar. You have a great podcast and many wonderful, informed and highly regarded guests but...
You made points about nuance and not being so narrow minded in encouraging a one way approach but you also both in the same sentence at times say it's important to be vigilant and to avoid certain foods like sugar and fake sweeteners, eating keto "treats" or peanut butter cups and Häagen-Dazs ice cream, etc.
You say 6 years has gotten you to a place that now you eat these treats and sugar and gluten - and you feed this to your kid(s)! I understand too that's there's a business and business model involved in what you say and teach but food addiction and even a small amount (a simple taste an one's tongue) can set a person back down to where they once were.
I'm disappointed. I haven't checked if you've had her as a guest, but please have a lengthy discussion with Dr. Joan Ifland about addiction because I believe you need to either understand, as you like to say, the nuances of addiction and the absolutely important reasons why no human should eat peanut butter cups or Häagen-Dazs ice cream.

Exercising for longevity it’s not about building a muscle mass, actually quite opposite. Staying lean, having a great range of motion and avoiding long cardio sessions this is longevity. Plus you don’t need to go to the gym for that
